Report: IRS targeted more conservative groups than thought

posted at 6:01 pm on May 14, 2013 by Allahpundit

Lois Lerner’s now infamous conference-call remark about not being good at math came in the course of an exchange where she claimed that 300 or so groups had been singled out by the IRS for special scrutiny, a quarter of which had “tea party” or “patriot” in their name and the rest of which were guilty of sins like criticizing the government.

The actual number may be …. higher.

The IRS targeting of conservative groups is far broader than first reported, with nearly 500 organizations singled out for additional scrutiny, according to two lawmakers briefed by the agency.

IRS officials claimed on Friday that roughly 300 groups received additional scrutiny. Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Tuesday that the number has actually risen to 471. Further, they said it is “unclear” whether Tea Party and other conservative groups are being targeted to this day

Given the advance knowledge of the program, Issa and Jordan voiced serious concerns about the honesty of top IRS officials and the lack of disciplinary action. The lawmakers said they’ve learned nobody has been disciplined and that one employee at the Cincinnati office where this program was supposedly started “received a promotion or ‘career enhancement.’”…

They said “at no point” did Lerner or anyone else inform Congress of the findings. And they claimed it appeared Lerner “provided false or misleading information on four separate occasions” in 2012 on the program.

The inspector general’s report has finally been released as I’m writing this. HuffPo has a copy. A key graphic:

hp

That’s where Lerner got her “300 groups” figure from — but that figure is, per Issa and Jordan, wrong. Why did it show up in the IG’s report, then? Did someone lie to the IG too, or have there been another 173 groups targeted over the past 12 months?

The report goes on to blame “ineffective management” at the IRS for allowing the bogus anti-conservative application filter to persist for a year and a half before the criteria were changed. Was that it, or was it actually the political heat they suddenly started taking last spring that caused them to reconsider? “Ineffective management” is more suitable as an all-purpose explanation for scandalmania this week than it is for 471 groups over three years being singled out for special scrutiny.

Update: Yup.

Brian Terry is still dead.

The gun that killed him was paid for with out tax money, a known drug thug paid for the gun, the gun was allowed with malice viewed as it crossed into Mexico.

The gun was used in he middle of the night during a drug deal with a paid DEA informant at the kill site.

Thousands of poor Mexicans have been killed with the other guns run by Obama, Clinton and Holder via the ATF into Mexico without any notice to the Mexican Goverment.

High Crimes and low crimes and ongoing cover up crimes.

Just imagine if the IRS workers and management cadres had ObamaCare in place already to help them in their persecution of these individuals….

Would life saving prescriptions for children, spouses or the targeted individuals themselves have been at risk? Critical surgeries delayed?

Would medical care have become yet another weapon wielded by these scumbags?

Of course it would. The IRS staff used every weapon they had at their disposal in attacking these people; they would have used ObamaCare in a flash.

MTF on May 15, 2013 at 7:10 AM

This scandal is more than intolerable, it’s ignominious.

I believe we can dispense with the feigned shock and implied recriminations. In its essence, this was an act of political intimidation. Someone used one of the most powerful auspices of our government to stifle free debate and repress a citizens right to engage in fair elections. This does not even fall to the level of “Chicago politics”. It’s below that and more worthy of third-world, dictatorial chicanery.

In that regard, it undermines the very basis for our free-society. It also poisons the so-called “goodwill” that Mr. Obama received when he was elected. Combined with the other ongoing scandals, the entirety calls into question his presidency. It gives legitimacy to concerns many people have voiced for years because these policies directly attacked those voices. One has to ask- why?

We’ve certainly struggled as a party to find our way. We’ve engaged in lively debates, hurled accusations and disagreed on the issues. That’s (almost always) been part of honest debate.

Yet in contrast, we have a Democratic Party that has marched in lock-step and trampled over our individual liberty. That’s no longer some unproven meme. In light of recent circumstances it is fact. To wit, we have the IRS used as a political weapon, the DoJ protecting voter intimidation, using the CRA as a voting intervention tool and spying on the press. In the background we still, 6 years later have a disastrous economy, a record number of workers leaving the job-market, an EPA that’s run amuck destroying our businesses and a forced implementation of Obamacare that’s destined to destroy our healthcare, enforced by the same scandal plagued IRS and in the rush probably also breaking the law.

This isn’t just a bump in the road or rough patch. It’s the end of a presidency and it dissolving before your eyes.

And the true fascism of the left, as always, will come out.

Use gov’t power to punish those perceived as political enemies merely for disagreeing with you? Perfectly acceptable if you are a fascist.

Let’s see if the left likes it when the next GOP president does it to all of the anti-American leftist groups.

this mindset she has is sick. She has no understanding of what is and isn’t American. It is sad what has happened to these people (the leftists I mean).

Flashwing on May 14, 2013 at 11:29 PM

While it is a nice thought, it would never actually happen in practice. the vast majority of career federal employees are Democrats and among those, a large portion are true leftists. That is why democrats can get away with doing stuff like this (to a degree). If a GOP president tried it, the career federal employees would run straight to the media (who would consider it worse than Watergate and would go nuts).

Obama only got caught here because he wasn’t subtle about it.

We will even see his lovely, smart, cherished, capable, entitled wife and her/his adviser Valarie Jarret run for office. They are celebrity and no one shuns celebrity and we should all shun him.

Don’t think, however, that he will not do as much damage to this country before he is gone as he can and the machine that backs him will continue to do damage after he is gone. The opposition still wants to be nice about how they deal with this and nice is not the right way to do it; they must get as tough and mean as that which they are dealing with….Chicago politics.

“One of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign co-chairmen used a leaked document from the IRS to attack GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney during the 2012 election, according to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).

NOM, a pro-traditional marriage organization, claims the IRS leaked their 2008 confidential financial documents to the rival Human Rights Campaign. Those NOM documents were published on the Huffington Post on March 30, 2012. At that time, Joe Solmonese, a left-wing activist and Huffington Post contributor, was the president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Solmonese was also a 2012 Obama campaign co-chairman.

Both the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and HRC described the leak as coming from a “whistleblower.” The Huffington Post used the document to write a story questioning former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s support for traditional marriage. The document showed Romney donated $10,000 to NOM. HRC went a step further than the Huffington Post in its criticism of Romney and accused him of using “racially divisive tactics” in a press release.

Solmonese, then still the HRC’s president, said in the release he felt Romney’s “funding of a hate-filled campaign designed to drive a wedge between Americans is beyond despicable.”

“Not only has Romney signed NOM’s radical marriage pledge, now we know he’s one of the donors that NOM has been so desperate to keep secret all these years,” Solmonese added.

Solmonese resigned his position at HRC the next day and took up a position as an Obama campaign co-chair. He had announced the then-pending resignation from HRC the previous autumn.

NOM announced Tuesday that it will sue the IRS for this alleged leak. Under immense political pressure, Attorney General Eric Holder launched a criminal investigation into the IRS’s actions. Congress will conduct ts own investigation.

In early April 2012, NOM published documents which it said showed this leaked confidential information did not come from a “whistleblower” but “came directly from the Internal Revenue Service and was provided to NOM’s political opponents, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).”

NOM discovered that when HRC published its confidential financial documents, it failed to conceal the source of the documents. “After software removed the layers obscuring the document, it is shown that the document came from the Internal Revenue Service,” NOM asserted in its April 2012 release.

“The top of each page says, ‘THIS IS A COPY OF A LIVE RETURN FROM SMIPS. OFFICIAL USE ONLY,’” the statement continues. “On each page of the return is stamped a document ID of ‘100560209.’ Only the IRS would have the Form 990 with ‘Official Use’ information.”

NOM president Brian Brown argued in that April 2012 release that the leak was made to benefit President Obama’s re-election campaign against Romney, his GOP challenger.

“The American people are entitled to know how a confidential tax return containing private donor information filed exclusively with the Internal Revenue Service has been given to our political opponents whose leader also happens to be co-chairing President Obama’s reelection committee,” Brown said.

“It is shocking that a political ally of President Obama’s would come to possess and then publicly release a confidential tax return that came directly from the Internal Revenue Service,” he declared. “We demand to know who is responsible for this criminal act and what the Administration is going to do to get to the bottom of it.”

96 out of 298, or 33.6%–seems more like a THIRD than a quarter.

But then again I don’t understand ObaMath, where $500 billion in Medicare cuts plus $1.2 trillion in Obamacare costs plus $1.4 trillion deficits minus $0.08 trillion in sequesters equals zero.
