Issa: No way we’re going to let Obama administration investigate the IRS by itself

posted at 12:41 pm on May 14, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, Barack Obama tried to get ahead of the IRS scandal by promising a full investigation into the policy of targeting the administration’s opponents for extra scrutiny and harassment when applying for tax-exempt status for their groups. Color House Oversight chair Darrell Issa … unimpressed.  Appearing on CBS News this morning, Issa told Charlie Rose that there is no way the House will allow the executive branch to conduct the only investigation into the systematic targeting of conservatives:

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Tuesday blasted President Obama for suggesting the administration could fairly investigate claims the IRS unfairly targeted conservative political groups.

“How dare the administration imply that they’re going to get to the bottom of it,” said Issa in an interview on CBS’s “This Morning.”

“This was the targeting of the president’s political enemies effectively and lies about it during the election year so that it wasn’t discovered until afterwards,” he added. “The fact is this is the kind of investigation that has to be open and transparent to the American people.”

Issa also calls out Lois Lerner for her bizarre attempt to spin the Inspector General report ahead of time.  I’ve been writing about that since the weekend.  She insisted that the issues were located only in one office (a lie) and that it was restricted to low-level workers (another lie).

Today, IRS Commissioner Steve Miller — who knew about this since May 2012 and didn’t inform Congress — tried apologizing for a “lack of sensitivity” in investigating conservative groups:

The IRS acting chief acknowledged Tuesday that the agency demonstrated “a lack of sensitivity” in its screenings of political groups seeking tax-exempt status, but he said those mistakes won’t be repeated.

In his first public comment on the case, Steven Miller said there was “a shortcut taken in our processes” for determining which groups needed special screening.

Miller has emerged as a key figure in the controversy over the IRS’ singling out of conservative groups for extra scrutiny. President Barack Obama said Monday that if the agency intentionally targeted such groups, “that’s outrageous and there’s no place for it.”

In an opinion piece in Tuesday’s editions of USA Today, Miller said conceded that the agency demonstrated “a lack of sensitivity to the implications of some of the decisions that were made.” He said screening of advocacy groups is “factually complex, and it’s challenging to separate out political issues from those involving education or social welfare.”

“The mistakes we made were due to the absence of a sufficient process for working the increase in cases and a lack of sensitivity to the implications of some of the decisions that were made,” Miller wrote.

Er, sure.  It was just “a lack of sensitivity” to the fact that the IRS targeted the administration’s political opponents while they were attempting to organize effectively during not one but two election cycles, and Miller and other officials never told Congress about it.  That’s practically Lerneresque in terms of spin.

No wonder Issa has zero confidence in the White House.

Update: One former IRS commissioner told CBS News that the agency “absolutely did the wrong thing,” but notice how CBS News emphasizes a sinister sense about these groups first:Maybe the DoJ is looking into CBS’ phone records, huh?

I don’t think there is a person on earth who believes that Holder would act without Obama’s approval. Even if Holder is fired, the Washington press corps will never trust Obama or anyone from his administration again, especially Jay Carney. They will stil be biased to the left, but most will have to make a decision as to whether or not they will carry Obama’s water or not. I imagine it will come down to their livelihood.

Why no, Comrade O had no knowledge of these things that were being done to help his admin …Now that he knows he is “outraged”…

Working towards the Fuhrer

The government of Nazi Germany gradually formed into a process known as “working towards the Führer”. Although Adolf Hitler was the ideological force behind the Third Reich, as leader of the country, he often deferred making decisions, avoided clear delegation and allowed subordinates to compete with one another, especially in the pre-war years. Therefore, a system of government was formed whereby leading Nazi officials were forced to interpret Hitler’s speeches, remarks and writings on government policies and turn them into programs and legislation. Any government member could take one of Hitler’s comments, and turn it into a new law, of which Hitler would casually either approve or disapprove when he finally heard about it. This became known as “working towards the Führer”, as the government was not a co-ordinated, co-operating body, but a collection of individuals each trying to gain more power and influence over the Führer.

Looks like Boehner has a party insurrection on his hands…

“House Republican members are defying Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and five committee chairmen by endorsing a measure that would set up a special panel to investigate the deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya.

A growing number of members on the committees with jurisdiction over the Benghazi matter — Intelligence, Judiciary, Oversight and Government Reform, Armed Services and Foreign Affairs — have signed onto Rep. Frank Wolf’s (R-Va.) resolution.

Boehner and the chairmen of those committees do not support the legislation. Instead, they have worked together to investigate the Obama administration’s handling of the Sept. 11, 2012 assault…”

When it was learned that the IRS, under this administration, targeted for discriminatory treatment opponents based on their political beliefs, my opponent refused to support a bill that would have allowed an independent investigation, separated from politics, which would have been fair to all involved. If he was unwilling to stand up against the use of the IRS as a political weapon then, do you think that he will stand up for you should you run into problems with your healthcare and the IRS?’

You still seem to be missing the point. Other than seeking remedies through the civil court system, which as noted above are being pursued, the only route the House has to “pursue the criminal charges” is to refer the matter to Justice. Even if they were to request an independent counsel, that request still has to be approved, and a person selected, by the Attorney General. There is no other course of action available.

No. They have impeachment. They have the power to keep bringing people in for testimony. They have the power to cut funding.

Obviously Issa is not in control of some of that (though he could have been vocal about any of it) and he did take his time getting the contempt cite, to begin with. Then it all went away for a good while as the campaign continued on without the “distraction”.

The facts are what they are. Crimes were committed that no one has any doubt about. We all know it went right to the Oval Office. And nothing was done.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on May 14, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Wow. Even when they report on it, they tilt as far to the left as they can.

IRS officials “failed to tell Congress” about all this. When Congress is asking the question and being told, “No, no such thing is happening,” then that’s not called “failing to tell Congress.” That’s called, “lying to Congress.”

And notice they lead into the discussion by showing political advocacy ads from conservative groups and talking about how much money they were spending on these ads.

And it wasn’t a deliberate attempt to target conservative groups. Oh no. It was “adopting shortcuts” that led to “affecting the applications of conservative groups.”

What we really need at this point is the ability to impeach the lying media….

A Special Prosecutor is needed to investigate the IRS because this scandal likely extends outside of the IRS into organizations like Pro Publica. It appears to me that PP knew they were accepting stolen IRS information and that has to be investigated and prosecuted if required.

A Special Prosecutor is also needed to follow the IRS leak of Governor Romney’s information to Harry Reid. That appears to me to be a criminal conspiracy to affect a presidential election and we can’t let that slide.

Let’s be clear here folks, the idiot Eric Holder is rushing to begin an investigation so that he and everyone in Justice and the IRS and the REB’s White House can refuse to answer further questions “because there is an official investigation underway”.

Now I am really scared. If he’s impeached then it will be President Joe Biden. I don’t think I could handle that. Our two choices are one person that’s corrupt and one that’s clueless.

Hate to rain on your parade, but while Joe may be as clueless as he acts, that does not preclude him also being corrupt. He is a Democrat from Delaware. There’s no way he isn’t at least as dirty as Ogabe.

Which puts us at Weepy John for the bronze. Hmmm…

I could see getting to that point.
But not at this point.

And you never will. And you know it. And we know it too.

There is no amount of evidence that you will believe if it makes obama look bad. Period.

You’ll spin and deflect and move goalposts. And when none of that works, you’ll simply stop visiting threads on the specific subject.

You must think none of us has seen you before.

I hope Issa has a large enough department of ethical people to handle all the scandals from the Obama thug regime.

BTW, what ever happened to Fast and Furious? Is that investigation still going on or is it dead in the water?

Amjean on May 14, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Thank you Mr. Issa, you are (one of a few) Republicans I have faith in,
