Open thread: Obama press conference with David Cameron

posted at 10:41 am on May 13, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Talk about bad timing! UK Prime Minister David Cameron is paying a long-scheduled visit to Washington DC, and protocol for such a visit requires a joint press conference.  Barack Obama will have to face the press just as two scandals are erupting, one new — the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups for the past three years — and one renewed, the Benghazi terrorist attack and talking-points scrub.

USA Today says that the 11:15 ET presser might include a question or two on those topics, putting Obama on the hot seat:

President Obama holds a brief news conference Monday morning with British Prime Minister David Cameron, but he is likely to be asked about pressing domestic issues: Benghazi and the IRS.

Obama has not commented publicly on the IRS admission that it gave extra scrutiny to the tax-exempt status of groups with “Tea Party” and “Patriot” in their names, though White House aides have criticized the practice.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the IRS, which is conducting its own investigation, is a non-partisan entity and has only two political appointees.

“We certainly find the actions taken, as reported, to be inappropriate,” Carney said.

Rep. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told CNN’s State of the Union that it is “almost as disturbing that President Obama and treasury secretary Jack Lew have not personally apologized to the American people and promised a full investigation.”

Collins isn’t alone.  Joe Scarborough asked Chuck Todd on today’s Morning Joe why Obama hasn’t reacted to the IRS scandal, and Todd thinks the White House has made a big miscalculation (via Jim Geraghty):

TODD: Why aren’t there more Democrats jumping on this? This is outrageous no matter what political party you are, that an arm of the government, maybe it’s a set of people just in one office but, mind you, that one office was put in charge of dealing with these 501c4s and things like that.

SCARBOROUGH:  Why didn’t the president say something on Friday afternoon?

TODD:  I don’t know. Maybe they were distracted by Benghazi. Maybe they made the decision they didn’t want it to be about healthcare. I raised this question – where is the sense of outrage? And the only pushback was, Jay Carney spoke about this at the press briefing and he was pretty strong. I have to say it didn’t sound very strong to me. I don’t know if the White House realizes. I think this story has more legs politically in 2014 than Benghazi.

Yes.  Let’s see if the press today thinks so, too.

Barack fears Benghazi…maybe the Clintons.

He thinks he is insulated on the IRS.

d1carter on May 13, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Yep.

My wild guess for the day: Clintons leaked the IRS stuff to divert from Benghazi.

cmsinaz on May 13, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Someone correct me if I am wrong:

I thought that Obama in the Rose Garden on September 12, 2012 said something like, “No acts of terror…” and it was buried at the end of his statement, condemning all forms of violence — with most of the script talking about the non-existent “demonstration.”

He never claimed that day or later that Beghazi was a “terrorist attack.”

And it was all the more outrageous that Crowley came to his defense during the 2nd debate given the earlier prevarication.

He knows nothing going on under the umbrella of the Executive Branch, yet he argues for an even bigger government.

I am starting to think that liberals don’t want big government to take care of people, they want big government so they never have to be accountable for anything.

This President advocates for larger government while saying that government is so big that he has no idea what is going on inside of it. Truly breathtaking.

“Keep in mind by the way these so-called talking points that were prepared for Susan Rice, five, six days after the event occurred, pretty much matched the assessments that I was receiving at that time in my presidential daily briefing.”

Was he reading the Cairo assessments? Or the Libya assessments? They are both in Africa, son, we’ll give you that much. However, you may want to check your notes. Just because it happened in Cairo (which is in Egypt), doesn’t allow you to generalize it directly to Benghazi (which is in Libya).

My suspicion all along has been that Barry went to bed the night of the attack or did a couple lines and was unavailable to make a decision, so the whole situation deteriorated because no one had the balls to send in the troops.

In addition, if there is some big hidden scandal, Barry is in a position to be blackmailed, just as Petraus was.

Version 1 of the talking points did have this:

We beleive based on currently available information that the attacks in Benghazi were sponataneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the U.S. Consulate and subsequently its annex.

This bullet point stayed in some form/fashion through the next 11 revisions, but it was in there in the very first version of the talking points.

The information about links to AQ and references to past attacks was completely scrubbed.

Hilarious. MSNBC has its most radical panel (Bashir, Bob Herbert, Katrina Vandenwhatever, and Ed Rendell) around for the Obama presser.

What’s funny is that Rendell was pretty moderate this morning about Benghazi. Now, he’s is bed with the other kooks that this is a witchhunt, though he says there are still “some questions.”

Yeah, like important questions that still need answers.

Whatever the case, Bob (“I see phallic symbols”) Herbert says Benghazi will blowback on the GOP.

He’s always drunk…and chasing skirts. He needs to be replaced.

I heard that Hannity said something the other day to the effect:

‘The time is soon coming when I am going to start outing some Republicans who are too busy spending their time in Washington drinking and playing around with the ladies.’

If he knows what I do, then one of those guys is going to be Boehner…and, frankly, he shouldn’t wait. The guy is a disgrace. Whether it is a Tip O’Neill, a Newt Gingrich or a John Boehner, we don’t need a Speaker, who is running around Washington doing anything other than the ‘People’s Business.’

Say what you want about that hag, Maerose Prizzi, but she never took her eye off the ‘We love this country, which is why we should fundamentally transform it!’ ball. Pole vaulting, passing bills without reading them, whatever it took. She made no compromises.

If only we could have some leaders that had her tenacity and myopic vision and would use them for GOOD GOVERNMENT CAUSES…

chumpThreads on May 13, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Well, impeachment is possible given that it only requires a simple majority in the House of Representatives.

Conviction and removal in the Senate will never happen. If the Republicans could only get 45 votes to convict Clinton of perjury and 50 votes to convict him of obstruction of justice in a Republican-controlled Senate, then they can forget about getting 2/3rds to convict and remove Obama for anything save slitting Michelle’s throat on national television.

Up until the IRS matter broke on Friday, I said that there are no Goldwaters and Scotts in the Democratic Party that would go to the first black President and tell him to resign because they love that 95% voting bloc too much.

That shouldn’t make you feel good or proud.

If it is demonstrated, however, that Obama was involved in any way or had knowledge of and did nothing about the IRS persecutions, then they may have no choice.

Using the IRS as a political weapon is THAT serious…

From the Articles of Impeachment of Richard Nixon (drafted, in part, by one Hillary Rodham):

Article 2:

Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposed of these agencies.

This conduct has included one or more of the following:

Section 1:

He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.

I think this story (IRS) has more legs politically in 2014 than Benghazi. – Todd

That says everything right there…The Obama WH and their Media want to distract from Benghazi.

workingclass artist on May 13, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Obama / Hillary wants to know why the American people mistrusts the government so much….really?

1) Obama’s 1st Bill – Stimulus – cost $875 Billion, contained over 7,000 pieces of pork…

2) Obama armed Mexican Drug Cartels with thousands of automatic weapons and grenades resulting in the deaths of over 300 people – and counting – to include a U.S. Border Patrol officer…WHILE trying to DIS-ARM Law-Abiding American gun owners…(Holder went on to perpetrate 3 counts of Felony Perjury before Congress in the cover-up of THIS scandal)…

3) Obama ordered Holder to drop charges on New Black Panther Party members arrested in 2008 for brandishing weapons & threatneing voters at a voting election AND ordered Holder NOT to arrest/jail any Illegals for committing crimes LESS than a FELONY

4) Obama & Libs promise 72 hours for Americans to review legislation yet shoves Obamacare into law in the wee hours of the morning – the piece of legislation was not even in 1 piece (it was in 2 parts when the vote was taken) against the will of the people…

5) Benghazi – 1st Ambasssador killed in over 30 years because he was constantly denied (additional) security – even after 2 previous terrorist attacks, a call for another attack on him on 9/11/12, & despite Stevens warning of the massively growing Al Qaeda population in Benghazi…..abandoned/betrayed Americans fighting for their lives, lied/covered it up…and is still doing so.

6) His IRS has been targeting Conservatives & Obama’s personal ‘enemies’ since 2010 — a Mitt Romney donor was villainized & subjected to 2 audits before last election…organizations that believe in teaching the Constitution & encouraged limiting / keeping watch on the govt / anyone criticizing how the country is being run all targted by the IRS…

…and these are just the items at the very, very top of the long list…

Um, Barry… you said ‘there is no ‘there’ there’…whatever the h@ll that means….Well, there is no ‘IF’ there! The IRS has already ADMITTED they targeted Conservatives and others as described above!

Good grief!

Shall we just look at what Obama claims about calling it an ‘act of terror’?

In Obama’s speech from the Rose Garden, before the phrase “acts of terror” ever leaves his lips — in fact, 6 paragraphs before — HE BLAMES THE VIDEO.

In Paragraph One, he gives his salutations. In Two and Three, he specifically, talks about the attack in Benghazi. So, there can be no confusion that what next comes might have been meant to apply to what had happened the day before in Cairo.

“SINCE OUR FOUNDING, THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN A NATION THAT RESPECTS ALL FAITHS. WE REJECT ALL EFFORTS TO DENIGRATE THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF OTHERS.”
(Paragraph 4 of 13)

He also labels what happened in Benghazi in the next sentence:

“But there is absolutely no justification to THIS TYPE OF SENSELESS VIOLENCE. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts.”
(Paragraph 4 of 13)

Is “this type of senseless violence” synonymous with “terrorism”? It sounds more like the way in which someone might describe a drive-by shooting in Chicago that killed a couple of kids. It certainly doesn’t describe what happened in Benghazi or a type of “workplace violence” involving a US Major in the Army/Soldier of Allah, who is screaming Allahu Akbar while killing 13 and wounding more than 3 dozen.

In Paragraph Eight, he speaks of the original 09.11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Arlington Cemetery. In Paragraph Nine, he talks of the sacrifices Americans have made in pursuit and defence of freedom.

Then Paragraph Ten:

“No ACTS OF TERROR will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.”
(Paragraph 10 of 13)

The first two lines of Paragraph Four would be irrelevant if he was going to designate the attack “terrorism.”

Also, under Federal law, acts of terrorism, BY DEFINITION, are premeditated. Thus, they cannot be “spontaneous uprisings”…ever.

The bottom line is that Obama, first and specifically, called Benghazi “a type of senseless violence” (like a Chicago drive-by shooting) and blamed it on the video in his Rose Garden statement.

Here’s the full transcript:

http://www.forextv.com/forex-news-story/full-transcript-of-obama-s-rose-garden-speech-after-sept-11-benghazi-attack

If it was an “act of terror” from Day One, why was Nakoula Basseley Nakoula arrested in the middle of the night by 10 Federal agents, perp-walked, thrown in solitary confinement in a Federal detention centre on an alleged probation violation, denied bail, and not granted a court appearance until the DAY AFTER THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION? Why was he charged with probation violations that were connected with the video and internet, which would not have been prosecuted as stand-alone offences, which is the test in probation prosecutions?

Why did he refuse to call it an ‘act of terror’ minutes after his Rose Garden speech in his interview with Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes on 12 September 2012?

Why did he, along with Clinton, Biden, and Panetta, tell the mum of Sean Smith and the father of Ty Woods, who were both killed in the attack, that the video was the cause on 14 September 2012?

Why did Obama blame the video in his Saturday morning weekly address on 15 September 2012?

Why did Ambassador Rice tell 300+ million Americans that the video was the cause on FIVE Sunday talk shows on 16 September 2012?

Why did he tell Letterman the same thing on 18 September 2012?

Why did he blame the video during the townhall on Univision on 20 September 2012?

Why did President Obama tell Joy Behar on The View that Mr Nakoula’s film was responsible for Benghazi on 25 September 2012?

Why did he bring up the video 6 times in his speech before the UN on 25 September 2012 when he only brought up terror once and then only in the context of Iran?

You can’t have it both ways.

Why do YOU like being lied to, chump?
