Open thread: Obama press conference with David Cameron

posted at 10:41 am on May 13, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Talk about bad timing! UK Prime Minister David Cameron is paying a long-scheduled visit to Washington DC, and protocol for such a visit requires a joint press conference.  Barack Obama will have to face the press just as two scandals are erupting, one new — the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups for the past three years — and one renewed, the Benghazi terrorist attack and talking-points scrub.

USA Today says that the 11:15 ET presser might include a question or two on those topics, putting Obama on the hot seat:

President Obama holds a brief news conference Monday morning with British Prime Minister David Cameron, but he is likely to be asked about pressing domestic issues: Benghazi and the IRS.

Obama has not commented publicly on the IRS admission that it gave extra scrutiny to the tax-exempt status of groups with “Tea Party” and “Patriot” in their names, though White House aides have criticized the practice.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the IRS, which is conducting its own investigation, is a non-partisan entity and has only two political appointees.

“We certainly find the actions taken, as reported, to be inappropriate,” Carney said.

Rep. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told CNN’s State of the Union that it is “almost as disturbing that President Obama and treasury secretary Jack Lew have not personally apologized to the American people and promised a full investigation.”

Collins isn’t alone.  Joe Scarborough asked Chuck Todd on today’s Morning Joe why Obama hasn’t reacted to the IRS scandal, and Todd thinks the White House has made a big miscalculation (via Jim Geraghty):

TODD: Why aren’t there more Democrats jumping on this? This is outrageous no matter what political party you are, that an arm of the government, maybe it’s a set of people just in one office but, mind you, that one office was put in charge of dealing with these 501c4s and things like that.

SCARBOROUGH:  Why didn’t the president say something on Friday afternoon?

TODD:  I don’t know. Maybe they were distracted by Benghazi. Maybe they made the decision they didn’t want it to be about healthcare. I raised this question – where is the sense of outrage? And the only pushback was, Jay Carney spoke about this at the press briefing and he was pretty strong. I have to say it didn’t sound very strong to me. I don’t know if the White House realizes. I think this story has more legs politically in 2014 than Benghazi.

Yes.  Let’s see if the press today thinks so, too.

Apparently the questions at the press conference are preselected. Does anyone really think Obama is gonna allow himself to be put on the spot?

I think this story has more legs politically in 2014 than Benghazi.

Is this a ploy? Is it a gambit? By giving the “either pick the IRS story or Benghazi” is F Chuck saying that we can’t have both? Both are big, both need to be investigated and both need to run simultaneously.

IMO is is NOT as important as the willful abandonment of Americans under attack by terrorists. Benghazi has much more “legs” to it…IF the MSM would only take a peek.

Lying under oath is lying under oath, regardless of subject matter.

And it’s fascinating that right now you’re saying there isn’t a shred of evidence as if that means anything three days after the story broke. There’s already been one outright deception in the statement (unless you want to call the IRS Chief Counsel a low level employee…).

Presser still pending and I admit it, I’m not at all looking forward to this. I fully expect a horrible display from Obama. Glaring eyes, somber, booming tone when his big-ole-smile routine won’t work.

I’m starting to notice a disturbing pattern

when a democrat is president, it seems like Republicans are solely committed to bringing down/destroying said democrat

see exhibit 1. Bill Clinton: republicans wasted how many millions of taxpayer dollars to impeach the President for trivial issues that the rest of the world laughs at

see exhibit 2. Barack Obama: now, republicans are once again wasting millions of dollars and time (what happened to focusing on jobs and deficit) to try to tie ANY and ALL scandals to the President

nonpartisan on May 13, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Yes, the democrats did not attempt to destroy/undermine Reagan, Bush I or Bush II. Ted (the liberal hero and saint) sent a letter to the Kremlin – our enemies – asking to work with them to undermine Reagan. Carter asked the USSR to help him beat Reagan. After 8 years of Clinton and his administration saying Iraq had WMD, after 8 years of Senate Dems saying Iraq had WMD, dems claimed never to have believed that in order to score cheap political points against Bush II. Iran-Contra. I could go on and on and on and on. Clearly, only republicans challenge sitting presidents or investigate sitting president’s administrations. The dems are pure as snow and care only about the good of the Country, while republicans are evil and only seek to score cheap political points.

Nor is the fact that the Obama administration used the IRS to punish its perceived enemies important. Nothing to see here. We should just ignore it. Because “nonpartisan” (who is clearly a far-left shill, but her dishonesty stems from her being a lefty) says so!!

You are an idiot. You are dishonest. You are unethical. You are uneducated. You are inarticulate. And you are stupid. But, you seem to believe you a) make points and b) fool people (“Oh my, that nonpartisan person just wants to do common sense things. they all seem like far left policies and positions, but she says she is nonpartisan, so it must be true”). It is quite amusing in its own way.

Doesn’t it ever bother you that in order to push your political philosophy, you must always lie? Anyone with half a brain would realize they are wrong when they are forced to always lie to further their position. But not you lefties. To you, lying is a point of pride.

Well I’ll never know because I refuse to see or hear anything this liar has to say….

he was not AWOL. what do you expect him to do, jump in Air Force One and fly to benghazi and fight the protestors?

nonpartisan on May 13, 2013 at 11:13 AM

There’s a reason the administration won’t release an hour-by-hour accounting of Obama’s time. Because he went to sleep. Couldn’t let dying Americans disturb his beauty sleep.

He sure found the time to try and look the part in the Situation Room during the OBL raid though. Had a photog there and everything. But no dramatic photos of him in the same room while diplomatic personnel were begging for assistance.

well, a person’s character is important for the electorate, and to the effect that such dirty & cheating tactics may reveal Obama’s character, its fair game

“Protestors”?

O_o

How about canceling all fundraisers on the day following the destruction of a U.S. consulate, the torture-murder of a U.S. ambassador, and the killing of two 2 Navy SEAL’s. How about acting like the effin POTUS instead of jetting away to raise money while American corpses are still warm. Damn you lefties are sad specimens.

Who gave the stand down order, the White House coat-check girl?

Wow, just freakin’ wow. No, WE expected him to go to bed so he could get up and fly to Vegas for a campaign rally. What would YOU have expected Bush to do?

If we’re lucky (or unfortunate) enough, we might even get to see him bust out the ol’ middle-finger-chin-scratch.

No one knows where he was that night. Americans were being attacked and yet he wasn’t in the Situation Room handing out orders. Some leader.

Old Hotness: The rat-eared coward single-handedly led SEAL Team Six and “got” OBL. Gave the order to take the kill shot personally. White House situation room filled to capacity with cabinet members and national security leaders.

New Hotness: Hey it is just a missing ambassador, think I’ll turn in early, got a long day in Vegas tomorrow.
