White House holds Benghazi briefing with reporters — off the record; Update: More whistleblowers coming? Update: “Deep background”

posted at 2:41 pm on May 10, 2013 by Allahpundit

If there’s one thing you want to do when accusations are flying about an attempted cover up and a disinterested, collusive media, it’s holding an off-the-record briefing.

Time for the team to huddle.

The White House held an off-the-record briefing with reporters on Friday afternoon to discuss recent revelations about the Benghazi investigation, sources familiar with the meeting tell POLITICO.

The meeting began around 12:45 p.m. and postponed the daily, on-the-record White House press briefing to 1:45 p.m. White House press secretary Jay Carney did not respond to a request for confirmation of the meeting.

The off-the-record session was announced to reporters in the wake of an ABC News report showing that White House and State Dept. officials were involved in revising the now-discredited CIA talking points about the attack on Benghazi.

Were they discussing troop movements or something? What reason could there be to go off the record, and why would the press agree to it? If there’s classified material involved, just redact the bits that can’t be publicized. Or maybe I have this wrong; maybe the reason Carney wanted to huddle is because Ron Fournier was onto something this morning in sensing that the White House is trying to point a finger at Hillary and the State Department for redacting the first draft of the CIA’s talking points. For obvious reasons, if Carney wants to steer them in that direction, he wouldn’t want to do it on the record. Then again, there’s no reason to task the White House press secretary with that; if Team O wants to push Hillary under the bus, they’ll do it the old-fashioned way, through anonymous leaks. So again, why is this briefing off the record?

Fun sidenote via Ari Fleischer:

While we’re on the subject of media collusion, what on earth does this mean?

“Scandal is a strong word,” Roberts replied, to which Scarborough asked, “What is a couple notches below a scandal? Kerfuffle? Four people are dead.”

“The first ambassador killed since 1979 — it is serious,” he continued. “You talk about overplaying your hand. If a lot of people on the far right hadn’t overplayed their hand on Benghazi and were screaming — before they knew what they were screaming about — I think we would all be much harder on the administration right now.”

What?

Because the “far right” was screaming about Benghazi, you couldn’t judge for yourself whether it was a bona fide scandal? Or is he saying that he could judge, but chose not to because any scandal that might potentially vindicate the “far right” isn’t worth exploring unless/until there’s been six-to-eight months of revelations?

I’ll leave you with this from loyal Clintonite water-carrier Paul Begala, the same hack troll who defended Harry Reid’s nasty conspiratorial smear about Mitt Romney’s tax returns last year: “I think the way [Hillary] has dealt with this has been admirable. And Republicans are treading awfully close to the tin foil hat.”

Update: Did this come up at the briefing? I guess we’ll never know.

Update: As if by magic, now that there’s been an outburst about it online and on Twitter, the “off the record” meeting has transformed into one that’s “deep background,” whatever that means. Dylan Byers explains:

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to the meeting as “off the record.” Though the existence of the meeting was off the record, it was conducted on “deep background.”

UPDATE (3:05 p.m.): I asked Earnest to explain the meaning of “deep background,” as defined by the White House, for my readers. He emails:

“Deep background means that the info presented by the briefers can be used in reporting but the briefers can’t be quoted.”

Obama ADMITTED that he did not call Benghazi a ‘terrorist attack’ in a 60 Minutes interview on 12 September 2012…

After his Rose Garden speech, Obama taped an interview for ’60 Minutes.’ In it, Obama said that he didn’t use the word ‘terrorism’ in his Rose Garden speech because ‘it’s too early to know exactly how this came about.’

Steve Kroft, the show’s host, wondered how the attack could be described as a ‘mob action’ since the attackers were ‘very heavily armed.’

Obama said: ‘We’re still investigating,’ [but I suspect that] ‘folks involved in this . . . were looking to target Americans from the start.’

But it was never too early to blame a YouTube video…they have indeed strangled themselves by their own noose…and so enjoyable I must say to watch them sink into quicksand they poured….

Here’s a conspiracy theory that fits all the facts. The US had intelligence that the Benghazi attack was coming and that it was a coordinated attack that had the purpose of embarrassing the Obama Administration. Any rescue mission would be destroyed with weapons provided by the US to overthrow Gadhafi. The political fallout would be similar to Jimmy Carter and the Iranian rescue mission.

This was planned by Africa based Al Qaida to embarrass Obama and maybe cause him to lose the election. Obama made the decision to do nothing because he deemed it the safest thing to do politically. The White House is explaining all this off the record to our corrupt media, since they will of course cover for Obama, because all of these Benghazi idiotic actions were done to get him re-elected.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula deserves a place in American history. He is the first person in this country jailed for violating Islamic anti-blasphemy laws.

You won’t find that anywhere in the charges against him, of course. As a practical matter, though, everyone knows that Nakoula wouldn’t be in jail if he hadn’t produced a video crudely lampooning the prophet Muhammad.

This seems to have exploded. I just got home and turned on NBC news (no I never watch it – and don’t know why I didn’t change the channel). Anyway – that Brian guy – the anchor – pretty much shat all over the administration and then called Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd in to do the same damn thing.

I could not believe what I was seeing.

I don’t know about this off the record press briefing – but it doesn’t look like it worked on the folks at NBC.

Why is NBC jumping off the S.S Obama unless they know some deep doo-doo is coming?

Geraldo Rivera: My Sources Tell Me Benghazi Was About Running Missiles to Syrian Rebels

That has been known.

‘A Libyan ship carrying the largest consignment of weapons for Syria…has docked in Turkey,’ said The Times in an article published on Friday (7 September 2012).

Quoting a member of the so-called ‘Free Syrian Army’, who called himself Abu Mohammad, the article said the over 400 ton cargo included American-made ‘SAM-7 surface-to-air anti-craft missiles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).’

The Libyan-flagged vessel Al Entisar, which means “The Victory,” was received in the Turkish port of Iskenderun — 35 miles from the Syrian border — on 6 September 2012, just five days before Ambassador Chris Stevens, information management officer Sean Smith and former Navy Seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed during an extended assault by more than 100 Islamist militants.

The Intisaar was detained in Iskenderun. Only after a phone call from the US government was the shipment released.

Ambassador Stevens had one scheduled meeting in Benghazi on the day of his death:

A meeting with the Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin, who Stevens personally escorted out of the consulate to the gates at 9:35…

Agreed, but I don’t think that’s going to matter. All Obama has to do is to set his dogs on her, sit back and watch the show. Who do you think the lap dog press will obey? The first African-American President whose mythic awesomeness is their creation or a dumpy retired and tired looking woman pushing 70? He can easily claim he chose her for state for the “good of the party” or some other nonsense and without saying a word imply “even though she wasn’t qualified.” From there, it’s just a tiny step to “Benghazi was all Hillary’s fault.”
Obama no more wants her to be President than he wants to see Ted Nugent as Secretary of Defense. He wants to drive a nail in the coffin of the Clinton’s political ambitions because he is just that mean, small, petty and vindictive and because I would not be the least bit surprised if old Michelle has not told him that he’d better set her up as his successor.

natasha333 on May 10, 2013 at 3:43 PM

I’m still catching up on the comments, but IMHO, Obama’s got his work cut out for him if he thinks he’s going to screw over the Clintons. Mind you, I can’t stand the Clintons either, but I also don’t think Obama (and Jarrett and Axelrod, et. a.l) know who they are dealing with. This has all the potential to be an internecine cage fight like we’ve never seen before. With any luck, maybe they’ll take each other out.

PatriotGal2257 on May 10, 2013 at 7:47 PM

From Diplomad:

…this time it was the truth, albeit the “truth” with a small “t,” but the truth, nevertheless. That truth has begun, slowly, slowly, to scrape away the thick layers upon layers of lies painted on by the Obama administration and its media enablers. The most obvious point is that the timeline of the attacks laid out by the witnesses shows that there was time for a US response, that somebody up the chain prevented that response for political not operational reasons, and that those political levels took the deliberate decision to lie about what happened at Benghazi and send out that execrable hack Susan Hack to blanket the media outlets with the lie. It is also clear that the silly YOUTUBE video had nothing to do with the attack. Please see my prior postings on this for my take on how Obama and Rice lied….

…The big truth, the big smelly camel in the tent, is that the Benghazi disaster was a tragedy, not in the debased sense that the word is now used by the media almost daily, but a tragedy in the original Greek sense: a horrid outcome that was foreseen but yet the players continued to march toward that outcome….

Our policy has created an arc of instability in the Magreb, reaching all the way to Cairo, and heading for Syria. We made North Africa safe for AQ and affiliates.

That is the Truth we will not likely hear at these hearings. That is the reason that the Obama people went so far out of the path of truth to cover up the Benghazi disaster. They could not admit that it was their foreign policy, not some obscure video made in the California desert, that killed our people in Benghazi. This would not have happened had Qaddafy been in power. Period.

Benghazi: Who ‘Disobeyed’ the Commander in Chief?
By Peter Kirsanow

Shortly after the terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, a local Denver television personality asked President Obama what actions he took upon learning of the assault. The president asserted, “I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure we are securing our personnel and that we are doing whatever we need to. Number two, we are going to investigate exactly what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Number three, find out who did this so we can bring them to justice.”

As to the first directive, we now know from Greg Hicks’s testimony that special forces were ordered to stand down rather than provide assistance. Furthermore, we learned months ago from Jennifer Griffin’s reporting that former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods requested and was denied backup three times, and was told to stand down. Who, then, gave the orders that flatly rejected the president’s “very clear directive?” Was that person disciplined for flagrantly disobeying the commander in chief?

Isn’t it far more likely that no directive was given than such directive was repeatedly disobeyed?

It’s impossible to believe that the military disobeyed a directive (why didn’t he say direct order? weasel) to go rescue an ambassador and the other Americans.

Obama gave the stand down order. It may have been to Panetta, but I can’t see anyone other than the President taking that upon themselves.

Yep, that’s it exactly. Obama’s heading straight for the fire and is about to be burned big time and, as you said, thinks he’s impervious to the flames. That accolade properly belongs to the Clintons. I’m sure there is something that can destroy Teflon.

Resist We Much on May 10, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Yep. This needs to be repeated and often. It seems that no one int the State Run Media has a bit of curiosity about where they came from or who was obtaining those missiles…it seems as if it never existed, so long, long ago.

d1carter on May 10, 2013 at 7:38 PM

There’s another possibility with Benghazi that we should not discount, -that it was an Iranian operation to shut down our gunrunning to Iran’s enemies in Syria. That would mean that it was not a terrorist attack, but an attack by a foreign country that we would be obliged to answer. The REB may not want to be forced into a response against Iran, thus the coverup.

We should be more aware of how desperately Iran needs Assad to prevail in order to maintain their tiny network of allies.

I agree to a point, but Obama and his thugs kicked both of their asses in 2008. Obama is protected forever. Clinton was attacked by the media in 08…if anybody goes down for this..it’s her. Not the person who lives in our white house

Redford on May 10, 2013 at 8:58 PM

That is very true, but I was also thinking that precisely because Obama handed both the Clintons their asses in 2008 that (especially) Bill is champing at the bit for big-time revenge and I’m sure he has a very long memory, as does Hillary. I have a feeling that Bill’s rage is not of the immediate, volcanic eruption sort, but more of a cold, calculating, surgical steel shiv that stealthily shreds Obama’s political ambitions for all time. And that’s not to mention the rage Hillary has been keeping under wraps since then as well. She was supposed to get the nomination in 2008, not Obama. He’s skating on very thin ice here, thinking he’s insulated from the Clintons. He’s underestimating them big time, even if by some chance Hillary allows herself to be thrown under the bus.

PatriotGal2257 on May 10, 2013 at 9:15 PM

“Deep background means that the info presented by the briefers can be used in reporting but the briefers can’t be quoted.”

So, in other words, the administration can continue to lie, but since you can’t quote the lies, they have plausible deniability later down the line?

At what point do the reporters just come out and ask, “why should we believe you this time?”

ButterflyDragon on May 10, 2013 at 9:17 PM

PatriotGal2257 on May 10, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Don’t get me wrong. I’m in no way on the Clintons’ side here. I can’t stand either of them. I said earlier that I want to see Obama and the Clintons take each other out. It doesn’t have to be spectacular — just damage them all beyond repair politically.

Redford on May 10, 2013 at 8:58 PM

There is a difference now, however. Hillary is the anointed successor to Obama in 2016. Obama, on the other hand, has no elections coming up and the MSM has been somewhat annoyed with him for awhile now in spite of their covering for him.

There is no actual need for the press to protect Obama. His power is already waning (note the collapse of the gun bill) and Hillary will be president, or so the thinking goes, in 2016. If the media is forced to choose between protecting Obama and Hillary, they will protect Hillary.

The MSM doesn’t care if the WH lies to the Republicans. That’s just political fighting and heck, they hate the Republicans as much as the Democratic party does. So … what’s the big deal about that?

However, the WH has also lied to the press and that DOES get them upset.

Obama actually inherited Benghazi from GEORGE BUSH.

If anyone is to blame, it’s W.

And the Republicans.

They allowed Khadaffy to remain alive and lure Obama into deposing him.

If Bush had only deposed Khadaffy before 2008, Benghazi would have occurred on his watch.

So, logically, it is all BUSH’s fault.

Jay Carney’s next line of argument.

Interesting comments but I sure would like to know Valerie Jarrett’s role in all of this…the de facto President. As for the fight between Ms. Clinton and Obama..”let me be clear”..Obama wouldn’t hesitate one second to throw her under the bus but it would be at the direction of Valerie and Michelle.
My guess why both Clinton and Obama weren’t available in the middle of the night…drugs of choice and a strict “do not disturb me under any circumstances or you are fired” orders. We all have read the very revealing accounts of how Clinton treats her “underlings” and we all pretty much know she has a wee bit of a drinking problem so that one is not hard to imagine. As someone suggested, it might come down to having the Secret Service testify about Obama’s “unavailability” that night.

Resist We Much on May 10, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Only major problem with that: there is no such thing as a SAM-7, and the SA-7 is Russian, not American. It’s much more likely they were Russian man-portable air-defense missiles (MANPADs), since those are pretty easy to acquire, while Stingers are not. We have given them to some insurgencies over the years, but not many – mainly so we can enjoy a near monopoly on them.

Seriously, now is a good time for Rep. Goodlatte to dust off Article One, Section 2, and start considering “high crimes and misdemeanors”. You can’t tell me they don’t have enough votes at least to pass on an indictment to the Senate. No, there’s no supermajority there, but the people need to see it brought to a vote, to turn a phrase. As Gerald Ford reminded us, an impeachable offense is whatever the House says it is. Let the libs chew on that for a while.
