White House holds Benghazi briefing with reporters — off the record; Update: More whistleblowers coming? Update: “Deep background”

posted at 2:41 pm on May 10, 2013 by Allahpundit

If there’s one thing you want to do when accusations are flying about an attempted cover up and a disinterested, collusive media, it’s holding an off-the-record briefing.

Time for the team to huddle.

The White House held an off-the-record briefing with reporters on Friday afternoon to discuss recent revelations about the Benghazi investigation, sources familiar with the meeting tell POLITICO.

The meeting began around 12:45 p.m. and postponed the daily, on-the-record White House press briefing to 1:45 p.m. White House press secretary Jay Carney did not respond to a request for confirmation of the meeting.

The off-the-record session was announced to reporters in the wake of an ABC News report showing that White House and State Dept. officials were involved in revising the now-discredited CIA talking points about the attack on Benghazi.

Were they discussing troop movements or something? What reason could there be to go off the record, and why would the press agree to it? If there’s classified material involved, just redact the bits that can’t be publicized. Or maybe I have this wrong; maybe the reason Carney wanted to huddle is because Ron Fournier was onto something this morning in sensing that the White House is trying to point a finger at Hillary and the State Department for redacting the first draft of the CIA’s talking points. For obvious reasons, if Carney wants to steer them in that direction, he wouldn’t want to do it on the record. Then again, there’s no reason to task the White House press secretary with that; if Team O wants to push Hillary under the bus, they’ll do it the old-fashioned way, through anonymous leaks. So again, why is this briefing off the record?

Fun sidenote via Ari Fleischer:

While we’re on the subject of media collusion, what on earth does this mean?

“Scandal is a strong word,” Roberts replied, to which Scarborough asked, “What is a couple notches below a scandal? Kerfuffle? Four people are dead.”

“The first ambassador killed since 1979 — it is serious,” he continued. “You talk about overplaying your hand. If a lot of people on the far right hadn’t overplayed their hand on Benghazi and were screaming — before they knew what they were screaming about — I think we would all be much harder on the administration right now.”

What?

Because the “far right” was screaming about Benghazi, you couldn’t judge for yourself whether it was a bona fide scandal? Or is he saying that he could judge, but chose not to because any scandal that might potentially vindicate the “far right” isn’t worth exploring unless/until there’s been six-to-eight months of revelations?

I’ll leave you with this from loyal Clintonite water-carrier Paul Begala, the same hack troll who defended Harry Reid’s nasty conspiratorial smear about Mitt Romney’s tax returns last year: “I think the way [Hillary] has dealt with this has been admirable. And Republicans are treading awfully close to the tin foil hat.”

Update: Did this come up at the briefing? I guess we’ll never know.

Update: As if by magic, now that there’s been an outburst about it online and on Twitter, the “off the record” meeting has transformed into one that’s “deep background,” whatever that means. Dylan Byers explains:

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to the meeting as “off the record.” Though the existence of the meeting was off the record, it was conducted on “deep background.”

UPDATE (3:05 p.m.): I asked Earnest to explain the meaning of “deep background,” as defined by the White House, for my readers. He emails:

“Deep background means that the info presented by the briefers can be used in reporting but the briefers can’t be quoted.”

My 2 cents:

Issa, and others, know exactly what happened before, during, and after the attack on Benghazi. Including what the POTUS was doing (sleeping), who ordered the “stand-down”, who dreamed up the idea to blame the video, who changed the talking points, etc. But, he has to follow the rules of the game and call witnesses under oath, otherwise its all hearsay. Yes, the whole drama is moving far to slowly, but we can only hope that in the end, Obama, Clinton, and others are brought to justice. Impeachment, removal from office, and a long prison sentence where Obama can get up close and personal with “Bubba”. I’m sure he’ll like that.

As for the 30 or so that were on the ground and why we haven’t heard from them: ask yourself, “who do they work for?” Answer: “The CIA”. They can’t talk on the record, or risk possible criminal prosecution. That’s why we haven’t heard from them. But you can bet Issa has, off the record.

AP from So, who changed the Benghazi talking points?…

Petraeus was, according to Hayes, shocked to see references to “al Qaeda, Ansar al Sharia, jihadists, Islamic extremists” etc. mysteriously gone from the rewritten talking points. Which we already knew, kinda sorta, based on what Peter King revealed about Petraeus’s closed-doors testimony to the House Intelligence Committee last November. At the same hearing, though, DNI James Clapper and acting CIA director Mike Morell — who, per Hayes, agreed to work with Sullivan and Rhodes to rewrite the talking points — told the House that they … didn’t know how the talking points got changed.

redguy on May 10, 2013 at 4:14 PM

We know this much for certain – as President and Commander in Chief only Obama could have ordered such a complete “stand down” of the entire U.S. Military. Even after 7 hours (and no one knew it wouldn’t have gone on longer, eve much longer) there wasn’t a single military aircraft even on it’s way to help those at Benghazi.

Look for a coverup, you say? Only the Three Monkeys of Oblivion could miss it. When it comes to Obama, Big Media and Big Academia are like the OJ jury, willfully blind, deaf and dumb to his depraved indifference. Obama might just as well have personally killed those Americans at Benghazi himself. Meanwhile the scapegoat video maker stays in prison. It should be Obama.

d1carter on May 10, 2013 at 4:15 PM

Speaking of a Clinton and the “lying” subject, in my view, one of the worst, if not the worst lie told by Bill Clinton during his infamous blue dress debacle was to his own staff. When confronted about the Monica allegations by his staff — because some of them were at the point of hiring their own lawyers, at their own considerable expense — he told them, to their faces, that there was nothing to the story. So, they acted on it, defending him and paying a lot of money from their own pockets to defend themselves.

So, he lied to the nation, to the U.S. Congress and to his own staff. Did he tell the same lie to his wife? Or did she know the truth?

Anyone who believes that HRC would not lie to protect her own interests is smoking something. And inhaling.

If there was ever a time in our Nation’s history where we, the people, needed a free and independent press….this is that time.

Were there ever a time in our history when, we the People, needed to gather together and pile on against tyranny…this is it.

Every lie, every utterance…be it Carney, Hillary, or Barry der wunderkindt…mark it, and use it…and keep hammering.

And, if Issa and the rest of the GOP pack, apparently still cowering somewhere, were actually interested in the Republic…they’d seek, search out and find and subpoena every person from Benghazi to Washington…at Aviano, or Sigonella…on the Med…in Libya or Egypt, next door, at State,CIA, ODNI and the White House…the underlings…the GS-11′s and GS-14′s, the area chiefs, the desk officers, the watch crews….and quite a few super-grades…and line them up…read them their rights…and then proceed one by one, in open forum…and hammer until it one of them bleeds…and somebody will bleed…and decide that they will not be the person who “protected the president” and be the only one punished…

Bets? Wagers?

Or is this one just gonna drift by the wayside…soon forgotten…

Part of me wants to believe that Issa or some other political ju-jit-su master is orchestrating the unfolding of events, and holding hearings with a small group of whistleblowers is only a ruse to get the conspirators to respond and go on record as having done d,e, and f, but not a, b, or c as testimony revealed.

Then another round of whistleblowers are brought out to prove that d, e, and f are absolute lies, and then reveal g, h, and i.

And the cycle repeats.

But, then I wake up to reality and understand that this is the GOP we’re trusting to get to the bottom of this.

BobMbx on May 10, 2013 at 4:31 PM

Republicans are so incredibly naive, and Ari Fleischer is right there in the pack. No, reporter Jay Carney would absolutely not object to how the administration is handling “the press”. Because “the press” is Fox News and Sharyl Attkisson, with the odd contribution from Jake Tapper. Everyone else is state media. Jay Carney would have been a propagandizing Time writer, just as he is now a propagandizing administration flack.

Grow up Republicans. It’s different now. The “press” is mainly long gone.

From National Review: A real zinger in the timeline of Night in Benghazi:

By the way, what is being called “the 2am phone call” with Hicks was 2am Tripoli time. In Washington, where Clinton and her staffers were, it was only 8pm. We don’t know much about what President Obama was doing that night, but it has been reported that he called Clinton at 10pm, two hours after she was briefed by Hicks, in order “to get an update on the situation.” Shortly after she spoke with Obama, press outlets began reporting that Clinton had put out a press statement on the Benghazi attack, which included the following:

Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation….

That’s news to me that Killary put a press release that night blaming the video.

LetsBfrank on May 10, 2013 at 4:48 PM

Figured I’d save Jay and the folks at the WH some time:

As the investigations went forward, I repeatedly asked those conducting the investigation whether there was any reason to believe that members of my Administration were in any way involved. I received repeated assurances that there were not. Because of these continuing reassurances, because I believed the reports I was getting, because I had faith in the persons from whom I was getting them, I discounted the stories in the press obvious facts that appeared to implicate members of my Administration or other officials of the campaign committee in any way, by extension, me.

Sometime next week, I think Jay’s scheduled to change his last name to Zeigler the same day Barry changes his middle name to Milhous.

Our friend Hugh Hewitt and the Daily Beast’s superb reporter Eli Lake have opined that it is likely a recording of the 2am phone call exists in the archives of the NSA or the State Department. Assuming this is so, if Secretary of State John Kerry, Clinton’s successor, does not think there was any real news in what we learned at Wednesday’s hearing, then surely he should have no objection to disclosing any recording to Darrell Issa’s committee and to the public, right? And if there is not a recording, it should be no problem to disclose any notes taken by Clinton or her senior staffers, right?

CIA Whistle-blowers. Who was the first to say that there might be CIA whistle-blowers? And what was the source? And are these the same additional witnesses that the Republican committee hinted at?

oldroy on May 10, 2013 at 5:17 PM

I did wonder at the time why Petreous outed his own scandal. Could it be to avoid being blackmailed into covering for Obama and Hillary? We might never know, especially if they have more on the guy, but I’m sure he knows the whole truth.

lea on May 10, 2013 at 5:18 PM

Lying liars lie. So it would not be a surprise if these people feel like they spin yet another lie at this point and get away with it. And I still have little confidence that the Republicans will ever get anywhere with this. Even if Geraldo has video of the weapons, nothing will happen. Issa will talk big, witnesses will make jaw-dropping testimonies, and nothing will happen.

The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam!” – Barack Hussein Obama

Yes, the only way someone wouldn’t have a future is if they are dead.

VorDaj on May 10, 2013 at 4:30 PM

At the risk of offending Mr. Obama I’d like say the the Prophet of Islam is a made up fraud and front for a criminal faux religion. thank you.

Mason on May 10, 2013 at 5:22 PM

I was in a concert & just saw this on the feed.
WTF?!
The propaganda is becoming more & more blatant.
The American people are more & more being shoved to the back burner.
No one is going to be able to ever hear these communists speak the truth.
The people ARE communists.
The White House is the enemy of Liberty.

I don’t care if they send the IRS to my door.
This $hit is getting more insane every day.
And those people are still dead.
As far as I’m concerned any more over this, the White House murdered these people.

Badger40 on May 10, 2013 at 5:23 PM

Petreaus is a scuzzy twit with no backbone but I doubt they be able to pin this on him. Too much information on the editting that occured. I was sure it would be Panetta taking the fall but he’s not showing up. Going to be a tough weekend at Chappaqua. How will Hillary possibly pin this on Obama’s kids (Ben Rhodes, et al).

I have a Facebook friend in the military who treated the survivors who basically said the public narrative about Benghazi was all BS. Of course, no elaboration from there. I’m hopeful it will eventually come out.

Saw Johnny live here in NH a few years back. He looked like death warmed over, but can still play that guitar. He turned 69 in February!

The “Blues Tour” this summer will be The Johnny Winter Band, the Edgar Winter Band, Leslie West of Mountain, and Kim Simmons of Savoy Brown. Leslie was at the same show I saw Johnny at, but since then has had to have his lower right leg amputated (diabetes).

Just logging on…I just want to thank Hot Air for continuing to beat the Benghazi drum. If we lost two Americans in vain to Fast and Furious, I am thankful that this may not happen to the four lost in Obama’s and Hillary’s Libya. Yes, they own the current Libya.

Now I am off to read as much as I can of today’s offerings.

d1carter on May 10, 2013 at 5:16 PM

Nowhere. It is only implied by speculating that what happened in Benghazi was “inspired” by what happened in Cairo.

“Deep background means that the info presented by the briefers can be used in reporting but the briefers can’t be quoted.”

This can only mean two things:

(1) The are smearing those that are coming forward with the truth and don’t want to be quoted

(2) They are about to roll the Ice Queen (aka Hillary) or some of the other hacks in this half baked administration.

However I am now more annoyed with the MSM now than Hillary. Who agrees to something like this unless you are a complete Obama groupie. Hillary was an idiot who was protecting her precious career, and she should pay for that, but the MSM are covering this up for what…to be loyal members of the cult of O. Disgusting….

I hope Obama rolls Hillary and the Clintons roll Obama. Now that would be a real civil war in a political party and after they have all behaved in this…they all deserve it. Obama deserves it the most because he is the guy in charge and never takes any blame for anything.

Ok, the hell with this RIGHT NOW.

Every survivor, military guy, state dept dude, and CIA feller that was in the vicinity of that joint that night needs to be writing their memoir, giving their interview and getting it out there, NOW@!!!!

Re-watched the Carneyval and Neil Cavuto is toying with Rep. Danny Davis (Idiot-IL) and his two braincells are working overtime.
If the memo was changed 12 times-well, if it’s true, because it’s that vast right wing conspiracy trying to keep no way tard out of the White House.
If it is true-blame the CIA.
You have to wonder just how ignorant his constituents are to keep sending him to represent them.

For his “One More Thing” Thursday afternoon, The Five‘s Eric Bolling shared a campaign ad that he said was up for grabs for Joe Biden, Chris Christie, Rand Paul or Marco Rubio to use in 2016. With the new ad, Bolling raised the question of just how much Hillary Clinton‘s role in the Benghazi aftermath will play into her presidential chances.

The ad consists of Clinton’s famous “3AM” spot from her 2008 campaign, followed by the clip of Clinton asking “What difference at this point does it make?” during her January hearing and the photos of the four Americans who died in the Benghazi attack. Bolling let his creation speak for itself, but he is quite overtly planting the seed that Clinton’s handling of the Benghazi issue will be problematic, to say the least, in 2016
