White House holds Benghazi briefing with reporters — off the record; Update: More whistleblowers coming? Update: “Deep background”

posted at 2:41 pm on May 10, 2013 by Allahpundit

If there’s one thing you want to do when accusations are flying about an attempted cover up and a disinterested, collusive media, it’s holding an off-the-record briefing.

Time for the team to huddle.

The White House held an off-the-record briefing with reporters on Friday afternoon to discuss recent revelations about the Benghazi investigation, sources familiar with the meeting tell POLITICO.

The meeting began around 12:45 p.m. and postponed the daily, on-the-record White House press briefing to 1:45 p.m. White House press secretary Jay Carney did not respond to a request for confirmation of the meeting.

The off-the-record session was announced to reporters in the wake of an ABC News report showing that White House and State Dept. officials were involved in revising the now-discredited CIA talking points about the attack on Benghazi.

Were they discussing troop movements or something? What reason could there be to go off the record, and why would the press agree to it? If there’s classified material involved, just redact the bits that can’t be publicized. Or maybe I have this wrong; maybe the reason Carney wanted to huddle is because Ron Fournier was onto something this morning in sensing that the White House is trying to point a finger at Hillary and the State Department for redacting the first draft of the CIA’s talking points. For obvious reasons, if Carney wants to steer them in that direction, he wouldn’t want to do it on the record. Then again, there’s no reason to task the White House press secretary with that; if Team O wants to push Hillary under the bus, they’ll do it the old-fashioned way, through anonymous leaks. So again, why is this briefing off the record?

Fun sidenote via Ari Fleischer:

While we’re on the subject of media collusion, what on earth does this mean?

“Scandal is a strong word,” Roberts replied, to which Scarborough asked, “What is a couple notches below a scandal? Kerfuffle? Four people are dead.”

“The first ambassador killed since 1979 — it is serious,” he continued. “You talk about overplaying your hand. If a lot of people on the far right hadn’t overplayed their hand on Benghazi and were screaming — before they knew what they were screaming about — I think we would all be much harder on the administration right now.”

What?

Because the “far right” was screaming about Benghazi, you couldn’t judge for yourself whether it was a bona fide scandal? Or is he saying that he could judge, but chose not to because any scandal that might potentially vindicate the “far right” isn’t worth exploring unless/until there’s been six-to-eight months of revelations?

I’ll leave you with this from loyal Clintonite water-carrier Paul Begala, the same hack troll who defended Harry Reid’s nasty conspiratorial smear about Mitt Romney’s tax returns last year: “I think the way [Hillary] has dealt with this has been admirable. And Republicans are treading awfully close to the tin foil hat.”

Update: Did this come up at the briefing? I guess we’ll never know.

Update: As if by magic, now that there’s been an outburst about it online and on Twitter, the “off the record” meeting has transformed into one that’s “deep background,” whatever that means. Dylan Byers explains:

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to the meeting as “off the record.” Though the existence of the meeting was off the record, it was conducted on “deep background.”

UPDATE (3:05 p.m.): I asked Earnest to explain the meaning of “deep background,” as defined by the White House, for my readers. He emails:

“Deep background means that the info presented by the briefers can be used in reporting but the briefers can’t be quoted.”

My bet on the ‘deep background’ and ‘off the record’ deal will have been surreptitiously recorded (no matter how much you want to stop modern electronics, the size of recording devices shrinks and evasion becomes easier).

That should hit the ‘off the record’ record in less than a day because someone amongst the brethren being preached to and given marching orders will have a survival instinct. It is like getting invited to a firing squad but passing an unguarded armory on the way to it: best to snatch up something when the time comes that YOU are the one to be put on the spot, because it is not far off.

Or the CIA. Except Petraeus says the first time he saw the talking point with those terms removed was when he saw them in a WH meeting with State.

Too summarize…

The WH is pointing fingers at the CIA and State.

State is pointing fingers at the CIA.

Petraeus, head of CIA, says they did not do it.

“Jay Carney Is Lying, I Mean Briefing. Actually They Are The Same

Most recent updates are the bottom.

Today’s much delayed White House briefing.

Carney just blamed the CIA. That’l end well.

He also said that everything the public knows was provided by the administration. Given the need for whistleblowers to come forward, I’m calling bullshit.

He’s also saying the talking points were based on what the CIA said. The CIA said an al Qaeda related group was involved, Rice said it was a protest over a video.

Also, it’s the Republicans fault. He actually brought up Romney’s statement.

He just said none of the talking points were changed because of a worry about Congress. Rice’s email said she was worried about the way Congress might use it.

Carney is a willing liar, he’s just not a very good one.

Reminder: The head of the US mission in Libya after Amb. Stevens death said the YouTube video was not an issue in Libya. And yet, somehow that became the talking point.

CNN is sticking it to Carney that the changes we’ve seen in the talking point wasn’t a “stylistic change”. Carney is acting as if State Department isn’t part of the administration…” – Drew M.

At some point the Democrat media operation that is this country’s mainstream press will be forced into pointing a finger, and has to decide:

If we finger the Obama White House, they’ll probably survive it, and they’re lame-ducks anyway, but Hillary survives for the next election.

If we finger State, then Obama’s legacy is protected but Hillary is seriously if not mortally wounded come 2016.

But Nugent wanted no part of Vietnam. He claims that 30 days before his draft board physical, he stopped all forms of personal hygiene. The last 10 days, he ingested nothing but Vienna sausages and Pepsi; and a week before his physical, he stopped using bathrooms altogether, virtually living inside pants caked with his own excrement, stained by his urine.

OK, Skippy, I mean Mr. Obama…you took full responsibility…and don’t have the stones to own up to it.

Not optimal, is it? Optics not good?

The ninth ring of hell awaits your arrival.

The SCOAMF who “drew a red line” with regard to chemical weapons in Syria is backing away from living up to ANY other statement???

Ohhh noess!!!!

Prediction: If this Benghazi investigation looks like it is going to burn the White House a la Watergate … look for an ‘stock market collapse/economic crisis’ to erupt as an excuse why “the White House cannot spend one more minute on something that happened so long ago.”

‘The President said it was a terrorist attack.’

- Jay Carney

Not exactly. Let’s look at what the President ACTUALLY said:

In Obama’s speech from the Rose Garden, before the phrase ‘acts of terror,’ which was NOT directed to Benghazi, ever leaves his lips — in fact, 6 paragraphs before — HE BLAMES THE VIDEO.

In Paragraph One, he gives his salutations. In Two and Three, he specifically, talks about the attack in Benghazi. So, there can be no confusion that what next comes might have been meant to apply to what had happened the day before in Cairo.

‘SINCE OUR FOUNDING, THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN A NATION THAT RESPECTS ALL FAITHS. WE REJECT ALL EFFORTS TO DENIGRATE THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF OTHERS.’ (Paragraph 4 of 13)

He also labels what happened in Benghazi in the next sentence:

‘But there is absolutely no justification to THIS TYPE OF SENSELESS VIOLENCE. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts.’ (Paragraph 4 of 13)

Is ‘this type of senseless violence’ synonymous with ‘terrorism’? It sounds more like the way in which someone might describe a drive-by shooting in Chicago that killed a couple of kids. It certainly doesn’t describe what happened in Benghazi or a type of ‘workplace violence’ involving a US Major in the Army/Soldier of Allah, who is screaming Allahu Akbar while killing 13 and wounding more than 3 dozen.

In Paragraph Eight, he speaks of the original 09.11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Arlington Cemetery. In Paragraph Nine, he talks of the sacrifices Americans have made in pursuit and defence of freedom.

Then Paragraph Ten:

‘No ACTS OF TERROR will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.’ (Paragraph 10 of 13)

The first two lines of Paragraph Four would be irrelevant if he was going to designate the attack ‘terrorism.’

Also, under Federal law, acts of terrorism, BY DEFINITION, are premeditated. Thus, they cannot be ‘spontaneous uprisings’…ever.

The bottom line is that Obama, first and specifically, called Benghazi ‘a type of senseless violence’ (like a Chicago drive-by shooting) and blamed it on the video in his Rose Garden statement.

Here’s the full transcript.

If it was an “act of terror” from Day One, why was Nakoula Basseley Nakoula arrested in the middle of the night by 10 Federal agents, perp-walked, and thrown in solitary confinement in a Federal detention centre on an alleged probation violation?

The First Amendment protects offencive speech. It doesn’t protect your feelings. Nakoula’s film IS offencive, as well as outrageously amateurish. It is also protected speech.

Why did President Obama tell Joy Behar on The View that Mr Nakoula’s film was responsible for Benghazi?

Why did he tell Letterman the same thing?

Why did he bring up the video 6 times in his speech before the UN?

Why did Ambassador Rice tell 300+ million Americans that the video was the cause?

Why did Ms Rice and others tell the mum of Sean Smith, who was killed in the attack, that the video was the cause?

You can’t have it both ways.

And Petraeus, head of CIA, says he was shocked when he saw the scrubbed talking points that the WH and State said the CIA scrubbed.

farsighted on May 10, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Shocked, just shocked!!!

Diana West: “Spontaneous protest, unplanned attack: That was Petraeus’ testimony as CIA director three days after U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in Benghazi, Libya.

Within 24 hours of the attack, however, the White House and top officials at the State Department, the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies knew that no protest, spontaneous or other, had taken place. They knew the U.S. had been hit on the 9/11 anniversary by a planned attack by al-Qaida affiliates. Ruppersberger’s account, then, indicates Petraeus deceived the committee. When committed knowingly, as former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy recently pointed out, such deception is a felony.

This same phony story — that “extreme groups” took advantage of a “spontaneous” protest over a YouTube video to mount an “unplanned” attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi — would be repeated by the Obama White House for two weeks, climaxing in the president’s U.N. address on Sept. 25. There, President Obama cited the video six times and declared to the world body, dominated by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (an Islamic bloc of 56 nations plus the Palestinian Authority): “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”
Blaming the YouTube video for the violence was, in effect, blaming free speech, which is also OIC policy. Additionally, it denied the reality of the planned jihad attack, which, by extension, denied that al-Qaida-style jihad terrorism still exists at the vanguard of expansionist Islam.

To date, the media haven’t asked President Obama and his top officials, why? Why the administration-wide cover-up? Why didn’t military help get to Battleground Benghazi? Without coming clean, President Obama has been re-elected, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mentioned as a 2016 presidential candidate, and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice floated as the next secretary of state.

And Petraeus? On Nov. 12, Fox News reported that “congressional leaders,” believing Petraeus lied to them in September, had “already considered charging Petraeus with perjury, but said they planned to withhold judgment until he testified this week.” (Under oath or not, it is a crime to lie to federal officials.) We have heard no such tough talk since.”

And BTW – Diana West: “Even though it appears the former CIA director lied to the House Intelligence Committee on Sept. 14, and may have lied again to the same committee on Nov. 16, he is starting to slip out of the inner ring of Benghazi cover-up suspects. We are losing sight of his official role in the deception as the media lens ossifies over a tawdry love triangle. For this, he must be thankful. Maybe to ensure the good fortune continues, Petraeus has hired Bob Barnett, the $975-per-hour Washington superlawyer to officials with issues and/or big book deals, to manage what reports call Petraeus’ “transition to civilian life.”
