Open thread: Benghazi hearing in House Oversight Committee

posted at 11:21 am on May 8, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Expect lots of whistles to be blowing, and lots of questions to be asked, at least by Republicans on the House Oversight Committee when the hearing on Benghazi starts at 11:30 ET.  The Democrats on the panel might be more inclined to offer speeches rather than questions to the three whistleblowers offering testimony today, and those speeches will probably focus on berating Republicans for turning this into some kind of partisan attack on Hillary Clinton, rather than a focus on how an American administration could have possibly missed the vulnerability of a lightly-protected consulate in what had become Terrorist Central in North Africa, thanks in no small part to earlier American intervention in Libya.

Greg Gutfeld warns that regardless of the answers, the questions will become irrelevant if the media decides to ignore it:

If the media decides it isn’t interested in the hearing, the Obama administration will not be held accountable for the Benghazi casualties, he said during his monologue on Tuesday’s episode of Fox News Channel’s “The Five.”

“As three key witnesses are about to testify regarding the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, one question remains — who the hell cares?” Gutfeld said. “I mean really, it happened such a long time ago and what difference does it make? Which leads me to another question, what kind of story merits examination?”

“The thing is Benghazi isn’t complex; it’s very simple,” he continued. “People needed help on 9/11. They were denied. Four people died. The government falsely blamed a video. You can’t get any easier than that. That’s Scandal 101. Even Howie Kurtz could follow it, and he is an idiot. Especially compared with other massive scandals — Watergate: people lied, no one died,. Benghazi: the president chilled after people were killed. Wouldn’t that merit hard hitting reporting on par with Watergate?”

But Gutfeld predicted that since Obama is not a Republican, the scandal could ring hollow since the media seem to be invested in the president’s performance.

CBS NewsSharyl Attkisson has been doggedly reporting on the story, and reported this morning that the witnesses will contradict the Obama administration’s narrative:

Will they give Attkisson more than 52 seconds to report on the findings? We’ll see.  Usually the rule is if it bleeds, it leads, but that certainly didn’t prove to be the case with the Kermit Gosnell trial.  I mentioned that to Terry Jeffrey of CNS News in this interview just before he took his seat this morning in the hearing room, and Jeffrey agrees that the media silence in this case has been a disgrace:

CNS News and Jeffrey have certainly been all over the story.  Here are just a few links that will help with preparation for today’s hearing:

I’ll keep my eyes open for embeddable live video of the hearing, but C-SPAN will be covering it live.

D-fusit on May 8, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Again, this entire debacle is a glaring example of what the underlying problem we have in America today…Liberalism.

Liberalism is the ROOT CAUSE of why Benghazi even happened! It was the liberal mindset and ideology that allowed this to happen.

Like Mr. Nordstrom said, if the situation was such that we needed machinegun nests in our consulate, WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE STATE DEPT. PERSONNEL THERE?!?! The answer is Liberal ideology and it’s a threat to the safety and national security of America.

Schadenfreude

What is your theory on the stand-down order? Syria was the obvious business of Stevens’ meeting with the Turkish Amb. on 9/11. The WH did not want this out, but now that things were going badly, State and the WH did not to send in any rescue teams because they did not want a repeat of Mogadishu during the presidential campaign? I think they intentionally left an “handful” of Americans to die out of fear of an attack that would claim 20 to 40 Americans.

mwbri on May 8, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Is THIS why Americans are buying guns and ammo like crazy? They are all a “Stevens” in the general lexicon of those in power? Nobody’s coming to help. You’re on your own.

Exactly, which is the point that I have, repeatedly, tried to make to idiots like Sesqui….

Remember, the State Department that rejected Stevens’ request for additional security over and over again – after 2 previous terror attacks, after 10 new Al Qaeda training camps opened up, after the #1 Al Qaeda leader called for a 3rd attack on 9/11/12 in retaliation for a Libyan-born Al Qaeda membe’s death months earlier – is the same State Department that ordered the Marines guarding the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to NOT carry live ammo on the anniversary of 9/11, only to have the Embassy be attacked and overrun like 20 other Embassies throughout the Middle East that day (9/11/12)!

If for no other reason, Obama and Hillary should be as severely punished as possible!

easyt65 on May 8, 2013 at 3:01 PM

MontanaMmmm on May 8, 2013 at 3:02 PM

I wonder who else involved in this debacle were never interviewed by the FBI? Survivors..anyone who knew too much?

d1carter on May 8, 2013 at 3:02 PM

Mr. Hicks said that the Regime coming out and contradicting the Libyan President and making him look bad greatly negatively affected our ability to get the FBI to the crime scene to investigate.

ALL ACCORDING TO PLAN.

Obama and his accomplices wanted as much of a delay put on the FBI team getting to the crime scene as was possible. The more evidence the FBI uncovered, the more that could be used against THEM in impeachment proceedings.

Meople on May 8, 2013 at 3:02 PM

Hicks said it was important to note ‘what difference DID it make’ .. Embarrassed Lybian leadership, steeled them against helping the investigation, etc.

They didn’t consider the number of lives at all.

1. “I killed Osama” and “there is no more terrorism”.

2. Arab Spring

These two were essential for Obama’s re-election. He had nothing, nada, on the domestic front.

Both were smashed with Libya going sour by terrorism.

3. The exposure of why Stevens was there, officially/and off the record (guy talking about it now…9/11 there) for arms deals with horrible gangs, to support other horrible gangs/terrorists in Syria would have been devastating to the re-election.

4. Stevens was there unofficially for personal reasons, combining the arms deal/s with business trip, being repaid for putting out so much help to the opposition to Gadaffi. He was a huge proponent of the Gadaffi overthrow and Obama’s man for it. The USA had NO business being in Libya. Obama, McCain, Rubio and Hillary are all culpable.

Ultimately the dead were sacrificed for Obama’s reelection.

This is a huge coverup but the dummies in congress don’t know what they are doing, incl. today.

If Hillary gets hurt, Obama will throw her under the bus.

The biggest fool in all this was Romney. It was a gift on a platinum platter, tragic as it was, and he completely blew it into the wind, by sheer ineptness.
