Hicks: Higher-ups at State told me not to talk to GOP congressman about Benghazi; Update: “Effectively demoted”

posted at 3:21 pm on May 8, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via the Daily Caller, the five most essential, damning minutes from today’s hearing. And Jordan does an expert job framing them. The money line, when Hicks is asked whether he’d ever been told before not to meet with a congressional delegation: “Never.”

I won’t slow you down with further comment. None is needed — except this: Cheryl Mills is no run-of-the-mill State Department apparatchik, even among the top tier. She’s been one of the Clintons’ right-hand men for decades. She worked in Bill’s White House legal office, then as counsel to Hillary’s presidential campaign, then became chief of staff at State when Hillary was appointed secretary. If she’s the right-hand man, what other conclusion is there than that Hillary’s the one who wanted Hicks to keep his mouth shut when meeting with Chaffetz?

One last point, per today’s theme of ghettoized media. As I say, these five minutes are obviously the biggest news to come out of today’s hearings (so far). Note that, then note tomorrow how many news outlets spend any time on them vis-a-vis other ancillary issues from the testimony. For instance, Politico’s lead story as of 2:45 ET is … “Benghazi hearing gets emotional.”

Update: As of 3:30 ET, Hicks just told the panel that he was “effectively demoted” after challenging State’s leadership about its handling of Benghazi. Of course he was. How else could they discredit him later?

Note that in the clip he mentions being contacted by both Obama and Hillary afterward and congratulated on how well he’d performed during the attack.

Not even close. This is about a massive cover-up by the administration.

Hillary can’t use the Fort Marcy Park strategy in this case. She can’t hide documents about her doings the way she did with Rose Law Firm billing records that suddenly showed up after two years of denials they even existed. She was the Secretary of State who killed Americans and then lied her ass off about the truth.

No matter what else happens, your bitch/idol is going down.

Benghazi Talking Points Version 2:

Saturday, 15 September 2012
9:45 AM

* The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the US Consulate and subsequently its annex. This assessment may change as additional information continues to be evaluated. On 10 September the Agency notified Embassy Cairo of social media reports calling for a demonstration and encouraging jihadists to break into the Embassy.

* The investigation is ongoing as to who is responsible for the violence, although the crowd almost certainly was a mix of individuals. That being said, there are indications that Islamic extremists participated in the violent demonstrations.

* The wide availability of weapons and experienced fighters in Libya almost certainly contributed to the lethality of the attacks.

* The Agency has produced numerous pieces on the threat of extremists linked to al-Qa’ida in Benghazi and eastern Libya. Since April, there have been at least five other attacks against foreign interests in Benghazi by unidentified assailants, including the June attack agains the British Ambassador’s convoy. We cannot rule out of the individuals has [sic] previously surveilled the US facilities, also contributing to the efficacy of the attacks.

* The US government is working with Libyan authorities and intelligence partners in an effort to help bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of US citizens.

But, those are just ‘stylistic,’ not substantive revisions.

Bryan Preston has a superb summary:

Seven Things We Learned from the Benghazi Whistleblower Hearing

1. There were multiple stand-down orders, not just one. Special Operations forces were told, twice, by their chain of command not to board aircraft or to to Benghazi to rescue the Americans then under attack. The US deputy diplomat, Greg Hicks, testified that the military commander, Lt. Col. Gibson, had his team ready to go twice. They were on the runway about to board a flight to Benghazi in the middle of the attack. They were ordered to stand down and remain in Tripoli to receive wounded who would be coming out of Benghazi. One of the orders came in the middle of the attack, the other came toward the end after Hicks’ team had traveled from Tripoli to Benghazi. The fact that Hicks’ team was able get to Benghazi before the end of the assault strongly suggests that the Special Operations team could have made a real difference.

At the same time, the State Department’s commander on the scene, Hicks, ordered his personnel into Benghazi and went there himself. Hicks testified that Gibson never told him who issued the stand-down orders. He commented that Gibson told him that the military stand-down was a shock: “This is the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than someone in the military.”

Hicks also testified that the US government never even requested military overflight to support the Americans in Benghazi. The US had an unarmed drone overhead and could have gotten permission to fly fighters over the scene, at least, but never asked.

2. Ambassador Stevens’ reason for going to Benghazi has been cleared up. Hicks testified that Ambassador Stevens traveled to Benghazi to fulfill one of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s wishes. Despite the fact that security was worsening in Benghazi for months leading up to the 9-11 attack, Clinton wanted to make the post there permanent….Hicks’ testimony raises the question of Clinton’s competence and grasp on reality, strongly suggesting that she put political perceptions ahead of the facts on the ground in Benghazi.

[I think there may have been more to it than this, but Hicks was testifying of what he knew.]

3. Clinton was briefed at 2 am on the night of the attack, was never told that a movie had anything to do with the attack by those on the ground in Libya, yet blamed the movie anyway…. …She would blame it, again, while standing before the coffins of the slain Americans, on Sept. 14. During the attack, Clinton told Hicks that no help would be on the way to relieve the Americans under sustained assault.

4. Whistleblowers were intimidated into silence.….It all adds up to a pattern of witness control and intimidation…..

5. “The YouTube movie was a non-event in Libya.” Hicks directly testified that the YouTube movie, for which a man remains in jail, was not in any way relevant to the attack in Benghazi….Stevens called and told Hicks that the Benghazi consulate was under attack. He never mentioned a protest.

Hicks also testified that blaming the movie had strongly adverse real-world effects. According to him, it humiliated Libya’s president, who had correctly stated that Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Blaming the movie, Hicks said, did “immeasurable damage” to our relations with Libya and delayed the FBI investigation….

We still do not know who decided to change the original CIA talking points and blame the movie, but the finger is pointing directly at Hillary Clinton….The fact that Obama himself blamed the movie repeatedly, though, strongly suggests that he took part in the decision as well.

[I can't imagine that Hill made the decision unilaterally.]

6. Democrats were uninterested in getting at most of the facts, but were very interested in destroying Mark Thompson….

7. House hearings are a poor way to determine who did what and why during and after the attack….

Benghazi Talking Points Version 3 (The Final Version)

Saturday, 15 September 2012
11:26 AM

* The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved in a direct assault against the US diplomatic post and subsequently its annex. There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations.

* This assessment may change as additional information is collected and analysed and currently available information continues to be evaluated.

* The investigation is ongong, and the US government is working, with Libyan authorities to help bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of US citizens.

AQAP had sent experienced fighters into Benghazi from Yemen some days prior to the attack on the US Consulate.

That’s very strange for a demonstration that was supposedly ‘spontaneously inspired by the protests.’

Did I miss something or do we still not know:

1. How many times was security requested and who/why was it denied?

2. Why the hell was the Ambassador there in the first place?

3. What happened to this email where Hillary supposedly saw a security request?

Was all this dealt with already?

And as far as today’s hearings go, there was nothing any more explosive than we’ve already heard. So it wont change the media/lefts push to ignore the story. Maybe I was expecting more, but if we cant get the top people like Hillary and her aides and others to come clean, we will never find out the truth.

Thank you! Great link.

Also, as I listened to the hearing I think that I caught something else but I am not sure if I heard this correctly. If anyone heard this, I would appreciate the confirmation.

At one point Hicks testified that they knew that Ambassador Stevens was in a hospital held by the terrorist. He mentioned this at least twice. He said that when he spoke to Killery at 2:00 AM that he told her that he thought that was where the Ambassador was being held. So she had that information yet she told Americans that the Ambassador was “rescued” by some benevolent Libyans that took him to a hospital to try to help him! Again, she LIED!

Did I get that right or am I missing something?

Phase three begins with news that the ambassador — ambassador’s body has been recovered. And David McFarland, if I recall correctly, is the individual who began to receive that news from his contacts in Benghazi. And we began to hear also that the ambassador’s been taken to a hospital. We don’t know initially which hospital it is, but we — through David’s reports we learn that it is in a hospital which is controlled by Ansar al-Shariah, the group that Twitter feeds had identified as leading the attack on the consulate.

from which even the Brits had exited

and
her own Ambassador was begging for security ??
I shudder to think about her thought process .
There were these guys working for her and Hussein,
begging repeatedly for security and she was removing their security,
then when they begged for help when they were under attack, she and her fellow jihadies denied them help and let them die.
Then she and Hussein partied and campaigned on the coffins of these dead Americans while threatening the survivors to STFU or else .
So WHAT was it that was sooooo important that she and Hussein had remove the Ambassador and 3 other Americans out of their way ???

Everywhere Chris and his team went in Libya, in a country scarred by war and tyranny, they were hailed as friends and partners. Despite a CBS News report to the contrary, Obama claimed that the Libyan security forces “fought back against the attackers.” He also claimed that Libyan civilians attempted to aid Ambassador Stevens by transporting him to the hospital:

Libyan security personnel fought back against the attackers alongside Americans. Libyans helped some of our diplomats find safety, and they carried Ambassador Stevens’s body to the hospital, where we tragically learned that he had died.

The press did their part to cover it up at least. Hill and Hussein can be happy about that.

Who knows what. There was never any accounting of what Quackadaffy had, what was taken or given to whom. Wouldn’t surprise me if we were moving stuff labelled as one thing that was actually another thing. I’m sure Ansar Al-libya was in charge of the accounting and logistics. And all the while our administration probably thought they were clever and doing the best thing.

It’s NOT a theory, moron. I told you what happened just hours into it.

Schadenfreude on May 8, 2013 at 6:05 PM

I just finished reading through the open thread and I have come a conclusion:
This Vebulace is actually Elijah Cummings’ puckered starfish and the pathetically ignorant Dems on this committee got their azzes handed to them today and they failed to protect Obama/Clinton.
The TRUTH came out about the fact that “Greg, we are under attack.” will ring in their ears until the day they die because “….death is a part of life.”

The only ones concerned about the video were the roaches scrambling to CYA.

If I didn’t come to this Site, I would not have realized a “hearing” just happened. Outside of the right wing tea partiers whose voice do not count, no one cares.

Instead of looking for ways to find the bastards who killed our ambassador and his associates, the tea party has somehow turned the investigation into smearing their fellow citizens who disagree with them ideological. Its always politics with these fools. No wonder most Americans dont give a f#ck about what they think.

Libyans carried Chris’ body to the hospital, and they helped rescue and lead other Americans to safety.

That’s the piece of garbage.

justltl on May 8, 2013 at 6:28 PM

Only one person or his designate can give that kind of order. What I don’t understand is why not even one officer went ahead and tried anyway.

We have a serious crisis in leadership. Are four Americans worth seeing your career go down in flames? I must be old fashioned, because I do. Any day.

dogsoldier on May 8, 2013 at 6:42 PM

I hear ya.
As you know, an operation like that would require some serious support, so I don’t blame anyone for following the chain of command. If the brass weren’t on the phone clamoring to be turned loose- now that would be a problem.

But the real problem is whatever POS gave the order to stand down and allow those four to die- and at least two of them knew full well that someone(s) let them hang out to dry, but probably didn’t believe it until they drew their last breath- probably not even then.

But all the BS about whether the government players knew it was a terrorist attack, whether that video was at fault and whether the liars lied on the Sunday talk shows- to me that’s all a side show.

The real issue, as far as I’m concerned, is the absolute piece of filth who gave the order to stand down. That decision could only have been made for the basest and most cowardly of political considerations. That person should burn. And dollars to donuts, the person who gave that order was either Clinton, with Obama’s tacit or overt consent, or Obama himself.

Er, who was the Commander-in-Chief when the Benghazi consulate was attacked and who is C-in-C today?

Same person.

And, one of the ringleaders, Ahmed Abu Khattala, of the group that killed 4 brave Americans was probably holding court today on the patio of a posh hotel in Benghazi, sipping a strawberry frappe and scoffing at the threats coming from both the American and Libyan governments…

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS DOING WHEN THE NEW YORK TIMES TRACKED HIM DOWN AND INTERVIEWED HIM IN EARLY OCTOBER, 2012.

Pssst! He’s the one wearing the red fez and sandals.

I guess that finding a dude in a red fez in a posh hotel in Benghazi, holding court before journalists and bragging about what he did must not be too difficult to find…

…After all, the New York Times did.

Again, who was and is the Commander-in-Chief of the United States military?
