Reid to Cruz: “My friend from Texas is like a schoolyard bully”

posted at 8:41 pm on May 6, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Yes, because goodness knows Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has never thrown a political punch below the belt in the course of his career. Via The Hill:

The two senators bickered as Cruz rose to object to Reid’s motion to appoint conferees to a House-Senate budget committee. …

He said Cruz’s request to eliminate all taxes in a final House-Senate budget was absurd.

“The senator from Texas was on the losing side…now he wants us to adopt the losing side’s view or we cannot go to conference,” Reid said.

“My friend from Texas is like a schoolyard bully,” Reid added.

“He pushes everybody around and is losing and instead of playing the game according to the rules, he not only takes the ball home with him, but he changes the rules that way no one wins except the bully who tries to indicate to people that he has won.”

Cruz, a Tea Party darling whose rhetoric has sometimes raised eyebrows among Republicans, shot back that “I wasn’t aware we are in the schoolyard.”

Reid cut him off saying “enough.”

Heh. Sen. Reid simply couldn’t bring himself to understand how it is that Republicans could possibly blocking an effort to go to conference on the budget — although Sen. Cruz’s concern was that the non-filibusterable conference report could be used to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, and he was asking that Reid amend his motion to go to conference to classify any provisions raising taxes and/or the debt ceiling as out of order before proceeding further — hence the apt display of schoolyard-style petulance.

Funny you should mention that though, Sen. Reid. Over the weekend, longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said of Sen. Cruz: “I think he is the most talented and fearless Republican politician I’ve seen in the last 30 years. … And this guy has no fear. He just keeps plowing ahead. And he is going to be something to watch.”

To which Sen. Cruz responded on Fox News this afternoon that he was flattered by Carville’s kind comments, but to all of his haters out there, it’s just a little amusing that “a number of people have criticized me on the grounds of civility and, in particular, have insulted me while doing so,” no?

Is Canadian-Born Ted Cruz Eligible to Run for President?
His mom was American, so that makes him a citizen by birth, he argues.

Updated: May 1, 2013 | 8:08 p.m.
May 1, 2013 | 3:27 p.m.
***********************

He was born in Calgary, Alberta, on Dec. 22, 1970, to a Cuban-born father, Rafael, and a Delaware-born mother, Eleanor. Both of his parents were in Canada working in the oil industry. They and Cruz moved to Texas, where his parents went to college, when the future senator was 4 years old. Federal law says that people born outside the U.S. to a parent or parents who are citizens and who have lived in the country are considered citizens at birth.

Some news organizations have taken a whack at answering this question as well. The Texas Tribune, for instance, said confidently in August 2012 that Cruz could be considered a natural-born citizen because his mother was a U.S. citizen. “Bottom line: Despite being born in Canada, Ted Cruz can be considered a natural-born U.S. citizen,” the Tribune wrote.

Harvard legal scholar Alan Dershowitz agreed. “Of course he’s eligible,” he told National Review. “He’s a natural-born, not a naturalized, citizen,” said Eugene Volokh, who’s a friend of Cruz.

Still, his Canadian birth means he’s also technically a Canadian citizen, according to Naomi Alboim, a professor who studies citizenship at Queen’s University in Ontario. But even if Cruz were to openly claim his Canadian citizenship along with his U.S. citizenship, that wouldn’t legally prevent him from becoming president. There’s no statutory bar to the presidency for dual citizens.

Cruz is from Houston so I was lucky enough to see him at several tea party and conservative functions over the course of a year and a half. A lot of Texans knew early on he was different. He came to the opening of the new Fort Bend GOP HQ (right outside Houston) and it was right before the runoff last year when it was sweltering. People were sweating like pigs but we waited to shake his hand. I could kick myself now because I didn’t take a picture of him with me, but when I shook his hand I said, senator (we knew he’d win), when you get up there, please remember the people that got you there and don’t go squish on us. He said not to worry, that he was going up there to do what he said he was going to do. So far he’s kept his promise and we’re just proud to call him ours.

If Harry wants a friend, he should hang on to that invisible friend that told him about Mitt Romney not paying income taxes. That’s probably as good as he’s gonna get.

WestTexasBirdDog on May 6, 2013 at 11:37 PM

So once again the good Senator from Texas Ted Cruz has upset the Pederast Harry Reid…

God Bless Sen. Cruz

If you want to accuse Reid of being a pederast, you probably should provide a link. Otherwise it seems slightly insane. And I’m not being hostile telling you this. Good evidence to discredit Reid would make me happy. A fantasy from you is not good evidence.

He would have to surrender his Canadian status. Holders of dual citizen status cannot receive the highest security clearance.

gonnjos on May 6, 2013 at 9:52 PM

I doubt Obama’s past would allow him to get a security clearance either, if he had to go through the normal channels.

And don’t think that BULLY term is just a term that he didn’t intend to use……expect it to be the new talking point.

Cruz is the new PALIN to the Ruling Class…..HE MUST BE DESTROYED!!!

An inside joke, Thuja. There is as much evidence that Harry Reid is a pederast as there is that Mitt Romney is a criminal tax evader, a talking point Reid brought up more than once in the home stretch of the ’12 presidential campaign.

gryphon202 on May 7, 2013 at 12:09 AM

Ain’t it amazin’ how Sen. Reidiculous so perfectly described himself in the process of his attempted reidicule of Cruz?!

Harry Reid has friends?

I have it on very good sources. Sources good enough to stand up to the Senior Pedo from NV’s standards, as delineated on the floor of the US Senate…

JohnGalt23 on May 7, 2013 at 1:26 AM

“They” will destroy him, like Palin, like Romney, like Rubio, etc. As soon as one looks like a leader, the MSM snaps into action and begins the business of the DNC. Truth is not an option.

I think Cruz is a very smart and talented politician…but I can not help but wonder how long it will take the rightie blogs and talk radio to turn on him…like they do everyone else.

Cruz may not want to support any kind of Immigration reform, but he was also domestic policy adviser to George W. Bush, who did support immigration reform. I have heard some people say they want him to run for President, but I read he was born in Canada. So that might be ticklish.

One thing is true, if his father had been from some place like Venezuela instead of Cuba, he would have been just another illegal when he first came to this country. I have wondered if that is really fair. There are a lot of repressive dictatorships in Latin America.

You mean like Rush turned on “solid conservative” Marco Rubio, even after questioning why Rubio would want to pursue something (amnesty) the Dems are salivating over?

Meh. Rush self-censors all the time when it comes to criticizing Republicans. He kind of has to. Just like the bulk of “conservative” talk radio does.

gryphon202 on May 7, 2013 at 8:07 AM

Is he too tough for you Harry?

Much as a like Cruz, natural born is natural born. Since his parents were not in service of the military evidently when he was born in Canada, this would not make him natural born.
I can see why McCain would be a citizen. His father was in service to the US military. But Cruz? No.
Obama? If he really was born in HI, then I guess even though his father was a British national, it seems people like him are eligible from what I can see. And I was never clear on this point much before.
But natural born is natural born.
Now if Bammy really was born in Kenya, it would be hidden. And that recent little finding in the British National Archives about a son being born in Kenya to Obama Sr in ’61 is quite interesting.
But go ahead & call me a birther. It wouldn’t matter anyway where Bammy was born bcs no one has cared at all one whit to enforce Constitutional provisions that are inconvenient WTH start now.
