Diplomat to testify that Benghazi “was a terrorist attack from the beginning”

posted at 8:01 am on May 6, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

“There is new information raising questions,” Bob Schieffer told a Face the Nation audience yesterdat, “of whether there was a cover-up by the State Department to deflect criticism that it had ignored requests for more security for its people in Libya.”  Schieffer and CBS should get kudos for airing the reports of this evidence, but strictly speaking, it’s not new. The witnesses to this have been around ever since Benghazi, but with a few exceptions — CBS’ Sharyl Attkisson being one of them — no one bothered to ask them.

Until now, that is, when Congress will finally break the White House blockade on these witnesses and start hearing testimony about the failure in Benghazi and the attempts to keep them silent about it, especially about the White House effort to paint the attack as a demonstration gone amok.  Gregory Hicks, a 22-year State veteran, said that his jaw hit the floor when he heard that explanation:

“The talking points were right and then the talking points were wrong,” Issa explained in response to a question about reporting at the Weekly Standard. The CIA and Greg Hicks, who took over as Charge d’Affairs in Libya after the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens, both knew immediately that it was an attack, not a protest.

Hicks, who did not appear on the show but whose reactions were featured based on transcripts of interviews with Issa’s committee, said he was stunned by what UN Ambassador Susan Rice claimed on five different news shows on Sep. 16. When she appeared on Face the Nation, she followed an interview with the President of Libya who claimed he had “no doubt” it was a terror attack. Moments later, Amb. Rice contradicted him and claimed a spontaneous protest was more likely.

Acting Ambassador Hicks watched the Sunday shows and said he found this contradiction shocking. “The net impact of what has transpired is the spokesperson of the most powerful country in the world has basically said that the President of Libya is either a liar or doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” he accused. Hicks added, “My jaw hit the floor as I watched this…I’ve never been as embarrassed in my life, in my career as on that day.”

Hicks believes the stunning failure of diplomacy on the Sunday news shows explains why it took the FBI three weeks to gain access to the Benghazi site. The U.S. had effectively humiliated the Libyan President on national TV. That decision, he believed, probably compromised our ability to investigate and track down those responsible.

Hicks told Darrell Issa that people on site knew it was terrorist attack from the beginning, and never communicated anything else back to Washington:

A top-ranking diplomat in Libya is set to testify that the Americans on the ground at the diplomatic facility in Benghazi believed from the outset that, contrary to the claims of administration officials, the September 11 attack was carried out by terrorists. CBS’s Face the Nation this morning revealed portions of an interview that the diplomat, 22-year State Department veteran Gregory Hicks, gave to the House Oversight Committee.

“I think everybody in the mission thought it was a terrorist attack from the beginning,” he said. Hicks told the commitee that U.N. ambassador Susan Rice’s contention that the attack resulted from angry protests over an anti-Muslim YouTube video, which contradicted the statements of Libyan president Mohammed al-Magarief, were viewed as an insult by the Libyan government and made the FBI’s investigation of the attack more difficult. “I’ve never been as embarrassed in my life, in my career, as on that day,” Hicks said of Rice’s five interviews on Sunday news programs just days after the attack. “The net impact of what has transpired is the spokesperson of the most powerful country in the world, has basically said that the president of Libya is either a liar of doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

Oh, and remember how the White House claimed that it had been in contact with American officials on the ground during the attack?  Another lie, says Hicks:

Hicks also contradicted the White House’s claim that it contacted American officials in Libya on the night of the attack, telling investigators that he never heard from administration officials.

This is going to get ugly when hearings open up this week.  Will Democrats paint these witnesses as liars or incompetents to protect Barack Obama — or perhaps more to the point, Hillary Clinton? This is probably not a good sign for Hillary:

Democratic congressman Stephen Lynch said this morning on TV that Susan Rice used “scrubbed” talking points on Benghazi to deliver “false information” to the American people:

“Absolutely, they were false, they were wrong,” said Lynch, after being asked about Steve Hayes’s report on “The Benghazi Talking Points.”

“There were no protests outside the Benghazi compound there. This was a deliberate and strategic attack on the consulate there,” said the Democratic congressman.

“It was false information. There’s no excuse for that.”

I think there will be many jaws hitting the floor this week.

Even if you’re the President of the United States of America, it’s pretty much impossible to speak with officials on the ground in Libya, or anyone for that matter, when you’ve already gone to sleep.

Clinton sought end-run around counterterrorism bureau on night of Benghazi attack, witness will say

On the night of Sept. 11, as the Obama administration scrambled to respond to the Benghazi terror attacks, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a key aide effectively tried to cut the department’s own counterterrorism bureau out of the chain of reporting and decision-making, according to a “whistle-blower” witness from that bureau who will soon testify to the charge before Congress, Fox News has learned.

That witness is Mark I. Thompson, a former Marine and now the deputy coordinator for operations in the agency’s counterterrorism bureau. Sources tell Fox News Thompson will level the allegation against Clinton during testimony on Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Sources close to the congressional investigation who have been briefed on what Thompson will testify tell Fox News the veteran counterterrorism official concluded on Sept. 11 that Clinton and Kennedy tried to cut the counterterrorism bureau out of the loop as they and other Obama administration officials weighed how to respond to — and characterize — the Benghazi attacks

“You should have seen what (Clinton) tried to do to us that night,” the second official in State’s counterterrorism bureau told colleagues back in October. Those comments would appear to be corroborated by Thompson’s forthcoming testimony.

Well he only the second-in-charge at the Embassy. Might be above his paygrade or something. /

Seriously, I heard the lawywer for Mark Thompson- State’s Counterterrorism guy that Hillary Clinton tried to cut out of the picture as she slithered over to the Rose Garden to lie her ass off about the nature of the attack and massacre. The lawyer couldn’t go into details but the term “culprits of this administration” was mentioned.

Benghazi may have happened a long time ago but at this point it still matters. My prediction, heads are going to roll. When you have a 22-year veteran of the State Department willing to testify that the pig-in-a-pantsuit didn’t want to hear any talk about it being an attack and not a reaction to a stupid YouTube video then clearly there is something foul about this whole incident.

Happy Nomad on May 6, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Even though much of the MSM never reported this information after Benghazi happened “a long time ago”, they now will minimally report that, rightly so, not much of this is new.

As for cutting the state department’s own counterterrorism bureau out of the chain of reporting and decision-making … that will be deemed ‘streamlining the chain-of-command during a crisis’.

I am not seeing the earth-shattering information that will bury the future 2016 aspirations for anyone. (Except for those testifying, or course.) CBS played this up on Sunday so that they can down-play the testimony later this week as ‘much less than anticipated’.

The Instapundit discusses that in some detail:

Some Obama-defenders will note that Nakoula was jailed for probation violations, of which he may have even been guilty. But, as I note in my Due Process When Everything Is A Crime piece — to be published next month, in substantially revised and updated form, by the Columbia Law Review — prosecutors can always find a reason to put someone away if they really want to. The question is, why, exactly, were they so eager to put Nakoula away?

The fast-tracking of Nakoula’s jailing was highly irregular. Among other things, I’d like to see the Congressional investigators get Nakoula’s prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale — and perhaps his boss, U.S. Attorney André Birotte Jr. — under oath about communications from the White House or the Justice Department regarding this case.

Because what it’s looking like is that Nakoula was targeted and jailed so as to provide a scapegoat/villain in a politically motivated cover story that the White House knew was false. If that’s the case, it’s extremely serious indeed, and in some ways more significant than whatever lapses and screwups took place in Benghazi. I’d also be interested in hearing from Nakoula’s attorney, Steven Seiden, about any threats made by the government to secure a plea deal.

If there’s an impeachable offense anywhere in the Benghazi affair — and at this point, I’m not saying there is — it’s more likely in what happened with Nakoula than in the problems abroad, which by all appearances are simple incompetence, rather than something culpable. Railroading someone in to jail to support a political story, on the other hand, is an abuse of power and a breach of trust.

Drained Brain on May 6, 2013 at 8:37 AM

And that college terrorist is asking for bail because, you know, he was only guilty of lying to the FBI during four separate interviews. He only took part in getting rid of evidence so it’s not like he should be locked up or anything.

Seriously, the reason he was locked up is immaterial. The fact of the matter is that the rat-eared coward’s administration tried to pin multiple riots by Al Qaeda and the Benghazi attack on a YouTube video and this guy became the scapegoat for bad foreign policy. You don’t have a problem with that?

Try to pay attention to what matters.

Happy Nomad on May 6, 2013 at 8:38 AM

Nixon was crushed by Watergate because he treated the break-in as a political matter in the face of a brutally hostile media…

Obama/Jarret/Clinton treated Benghazi as a strictly political matter in the face of an adoring friendly media…

Nixon held out for so long because he was a brilliant politico — I am not convinced Obama is a brilliant politico — thus he could have is second term completely distroyed by this.

“What difference, at this point, does it make?!” is starting to resemble an epitaph – will the media notice?

I want to force myself to believe that the White House and State Department are just inept and out of their league. However they have proven themselves time and again that they are in fact, insidious.

How could they refuse to aid their own appointees and then lie about the event? I mean lie so quickly and completely that it appears to be scripted and rehearsed even prior to the the attack.

That struck me a bit, too. It would have been one thing coming from a Dem in a purple or red state. Maybe Wallace decided to go with a Dem from a state that has recently experienced terrorism.

I hope Hillary takes it in the rear end on this one. And I hope that the “What difference does it make at this point?” crack gets played over and over and over again.

I hope some Dem asks whether Hicks can cite anyone who can confirm his account. Hicks might say, “Yes, Chris Stevens, but he’s dead thanks to the Obama administration.”

Also, the Obama administration never had a good explanation why the FBI couldn’t get access to the site in the aftermath. And it has had no good explanation why the investigation has been in neutral all this time. The insult to the Libyan government surely seems like the logical explanation. It may have been too weak to slam the Obama administration directly, but it fixed their wagon indirectly.

So, in the end, the Obama administration screwed up events leading up to the attack, screwed up events during the attack, and screwed up events after the attack. Obama and Hillary were both asleep at 3 a.m. Have I missed anything?

So, in the end, the Obama administration screwed up events leading up to the attack, screwed up events during the attack, and screwed up events after the attack. Obama and Hillary were both asleep at 3 a.m. Have I missed anything?

BuckeyeSam on May 6, 2013 at 8:52 AM

Yup. Obama was reelected with a willing and complicit American press covering his tail all the way to the voting booth.

Administrative rope-a-dope

1 No way we screwed up or covered up at Benghazi.
2 In a time of crisis a few “miscalculations” are always made
3 No way we badgered or threatened eye witnesses into silence and sequestration.
4 What was done was to protect our delicate relations with our Muslim “brothers” and ultimately to protect our country. This may involve a little “inconvenience” for some but “sacrifice” is necessary for the ultimate “good” .Our hard working government “public servants” deserve praise not censor.
5 Everybody “knows” that Benghazi is OLD NEWS. Just read the NY Times, AP dispatches and listen to CNN & MSNBC. Why do Republicans keep dragging up the “ancient past” Because they’re a “racist” party, totally out of new ideas, falsely attacking a black president.I don’t believe the American voters will stand for this “unnecessary racial harassment and bigotry.”

People need to grow up and stop assuming that there’s always a cover up or government incompetence involved.

bayam on May 1, 2013 at 5:16 PM

yeah, they were wrong about it being a youtube video that sparked it. ok, thats not a crime. we have more pressing issues to deal with.

nonpartisan on May 1, 2013 at 6:08 PM

No one cares about Benghazi in the context of American ventures in that part of the world over the past decade.

Why doesn’t anyone on the right demand investigations that explore the failed war strategy in Iraq that’s ultimately descending into another era of chaos where terrorists thrive? Thousands of lives and trillions of dollars lost is suddenly less important than the death of a few Americans in Libya?

bayam on May 1, 2013 at 4:42 PM

what does that have to do with the witchhunt?

This will be worse than you think. One report I heard this morning, put out on WRKO, is that we will hear testimony that a military unit was enroute to Benghazi and that it could have saved some of the people there AND THEY WERE ORDERED TO TURN AROUND and STAND DOWN.

dogsoldier on May 6, 2013 at 8:34 AM

And the lawyer for Thompson said that more people would have died had the CIA not disobeyed orders to stand down.

How much of a mark the truth leaves is going to depend on how much of this can be tied to the political calculations of a lazy rat-eared coward and his advisors and how much was nothing more than the kind of professional incompetence when you put somebody with zero diplomatic experience in as SecState to mend fences with the rabid stupid women that were angry that one of their own was not the party’s nominee.

Also, the Obama administration never had a good explanation why the FBI couldn’t get access to the site in the aftermath.

CNN managed to get to the site within days, and even picked up the ambassador’s diary from the ground, but somehow it took weeks for the Obama administration to get the F.B.I. to the scene?

I’m guessing the Obama administration was just fine with the delay in the investigation. They needed that time to make sure the evidence of their complicity and incompetence was destroyed by all the people who were climbing all over the site. And to allow the AQ culprits to get away.

[pambi on May 6, 2013 at 8:29 AM]

Well, it was related to the video, but as an issue unrelated to the what the Administration used him for. He’d been convicted of fraud, IRRC, and part of the sentence/parole was not to use aliases and, I think, do fundraising or the like. He did both, I think, in connection with making the video.

So, the Administration lucked out that their scapegoat was involved in parole violations.

But just last week on the 2 year anniversary of the bin Laden assassination, Boston radio station WBZ (C-BS affiliate) did their daily web poll, asking “Do you feel safer today than 2 years ago?”.

80% of Bostonians said “No.” An approximately equal number (79%) voted for Dear Leader in 2012.

Del Dolemonte on May 6, 2013 at 10:01 AM

Remember too, that Obama and Hillary made a commercial in which they apologized for the Mohammed video and paid to air the ad on Pakistani TV stations. Not that the guy should have made the video, but his being made a scapegoat should be a criminal action. Hillary and Obama were up to their eyeballs in this charade. Nixon was forced to resign for far less of a crime.

The television ads in Pakistan feature clips of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during press appearances in Washington in which they condemned the video. Their words were subtitled in Urdu.

“We absolutely reject its content and message,” said Clinton in the advertisement.

The advertisements end with the seal of the American Embassy in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the ad was produced by the embassy, which spent $70,000 to air the 30-second spot on seven Pakistani television stations. Pakistan is the only country where the ads are running. The embassy wanted to run the ads because it determined that the messages of Obama and Clinton were not reaching enough of the Pakistani public through regular news reporting, Nuland said.

“As you know, after the (anti-Islam) video came out, there was concern in lots of bodies politic, including Pakistan, as to whether this represented the views of the U.S. government. So, in order to be sure that we reached the largest number of Pakistanis, some 90 million as I understand it in this case with these spots, it was the judgment that this was the best way to do it,” Nuland said.

So now even a Democrat Congressman is willing to admit that the Obama Administration delivered “false information” to the American people. Now that Obama has been safely re-elected, Democrats are willing to turn on Susan Rice and Hillary to save their own hides.

But this attack occured 8 weeks before the election–where was the coverage and the witness testimony and hearings BEFORE the election, when it might have mattered?

But even after Obama’s re-election, this could have some positive effects–if lots of dirt comes out about Hillary’s incompetence or irresponsibility concerning Benghazi, it could keep her out of the White House in 2016…

Steve Z on May 6, 2013 at 10:20 AM

This was a cover up for strictly political purposes. Dear leader had a reelection to win and Shrillary had 2016 on her schedule. The 4 dead Americans were just bumps in the road, dontcha know. They are also in deep denial about the dangers presented by jihadis in and out of this country. We have no one in the admin who is serious about watching our backs or fronts. Killing a few enemies with drones is like a video game for dear leader who probably wants to add a new feature called droning Arizona or Texas to his game.

I’ve maintained this from the beginning. The Navy Seals were painting a target with a laser designator. They don’t do that unless there is air support inbound or already on station. Someone was up there, and that someone was told to leave before firing. As a result, the guy with the laser designator on the ground was left exposed and ended up dead.

Hillary’s defense:

“I wasn’t performing my job as Secretary of State at the time, so your questions to me aren’t relevant. Urgent national security cables? No, I’m 200% positive I didn’t see those, and I’m 100% positive no one else is allowed to.” ~SOS Clinton speaking about 4 dead Americans.

Nothing about this harmed obama in the least, and neither did anything related to operation f&f.

Nothing is going to keep hillary out of the white house in 2016. Nothing. Even if everything we know happened were trumpeted from the compliant media for the next year (yeah, right), they will still have YEARS to make us all forget about it. Don’t believe me? Keep watching.
