S.C. Dem chair doubles down on Nikki Haley comments

posted at 3:31 pm on May 5, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the chair of South Carolina’s Democrat party, Dick Harpootlian, raised some eyebrows on Friday when he urged supporters to help send GOP Governor Nikki Haley, “back to wherever the hell she came from.” Given that the governor is of Indian descent, this was widely reported on and seemed to put the lie to that whole, oppose the GOP because they’re the real racists meme. But politicians put their over sized feet in their mouth all the time, right? Clearly, we’ll see a quickly sketched out non-apology and everyone will move on to the next story of the day. Well… not so fast.

Harpootlian, a longtime Democratic figure who has a history of using harsh rhetoric, made the comments at the party’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner just moments before Vice-President Joe Biden took the stage.

Asked what he meant by comment, Harpootlian wrote in an email: “Lexington County.”

Before being elected governor in 2010, Haley lived in the suburban Columbia county and represented the area in the state House.

As to whether he thought the comment could be seen as touching on her race and parents’ immigrant status, Harpootlian responded: “No, she was born in Bamberg [South Carolina] and lived in Lexington. Anybody implying anything different is attempting to feign insult.”

I see. So you’re not taking the comment back because you were referring to the Governor hailing from… Lexington County?

I’ll confess that I don’t know exactly where Lexington County, South Carolina is, or Columbia County either. But then, I have never lived anywhere near the Palmetto State. I’m not sure that Mr. Harpootian can use the same excuse. If he’s supposed to be representing his party across the entire state, are we to assume that the Chairman isn’t familiar with this part of the state either? Or that he didn’t know that his own Governor comes from there?

I realize that Harpootian has found himself in a bit of hot water, and people in such positions tend to scramble to find a way out. But as “explanations” go, this has to be one of the weakest we’ve seen in a while. But on the plus side, the next time somebody makes a comment about where President Obama “is from” we can all just turn around and say, “he was talking about Hawaii, dummy.”

The problem with this excuse is that Lexington County is a specific location that does not lend istself to the “wherever the hell she came from” rhetoric. If he meant she should take the long trek from Columbia to suburban Columbia then he should have said so.

It used to be that Harpootlian’s comment would indeed be an innocent remark to vote somebody out of office. However, the lefties have politicized the language so much so that any insult of a non-white is a bigotted slur. It’s not even a question of being even handed. In today’s English, Harpootlian made an explicitly racist comment. There is no room for interpretation.

And he has a name only Charles Dickens could love.

“I don’t want to buy the black vote, I just want to rent it for a day”

Dick Harpootlian is a racist, and the fact that he’s been the long time head of the SC Democratic Party means the DNC has no problem with racists in leadership positions of their party.

rbj on May 5, 2013 at 3:51 PM

I actually am thinking he didn’t mean this as a racial comment, but as a reference to her coming out of obscurity.

That being said, no way in hell that a Republican saying this about a minority woman would not be on the front page of the newspapers and a top story on TV. There would be no benefit of the doubt given and guilt of racism and sexism would automatically be assumed.

At last year’s national Democratic convention, Harpootlian had compared Haley to Adolf Hitler’s mistress, saying the governor “was down in the bunker a la Eva Braun.” He never apologized for that remark either.

I’m seeing a pattern here.

lynncgb on May 5, 2013 at 4:26 PM

Is Dick Harpootlian a horse’s ass? Of course.

Beyond his original crassness, is this a story? No.

I agree that this is a reference to her obscure political history. It is well-known that Nikki was born in Bamberg and represented Lexington County. But Lexington County is represented in the Senate by Jake Knott, an entrenched Republican power-broker, so the traditional stop in the Senate as a resume-enhancer and connection-builder was denied her. She was not going to beat Knott in a head-to-head race, so she had to skip the intermediate step and leap straight from the State House to the Governorship. She made it, but Harpootlian thinks her lack of networking on the way up makes her beatable.

Most people just think the ass should shut up and retire, but he’s been about as effective an ass for the state’s #2 party as you would expect. Being the Dem Party Leader in SC is about like being Mgr of the Cubs–why waste a better man in such a bleak position?

Lexington is considered a suburb of Columbia, and Lexington County (pronounced LEK-in-dun) is one of the strongest red voting blocs anywhere.

BTW, there is no Columbia County in SC. In 29 of the state’s 46 counties, the town or city that is the County Seat has the same name as the County it represents–e.g., Greenville County and city, Charleston County and city, Sumter, Aiken, Bamberg County and cities, etc.–but while Columbia is the largest city and capital of the state it is part of Richland County.

Columbia, SC is the state capital*. It lies within Richland County. Lexington County is west of Columbia across the Saluda and Congaree Rivers. It’s an effective counter-weight in state elections to the likes of Harpootlian who reside in Richland County. In fact, Richland County can give Cuyahoga County (Ohio) and Cooke County (Illinois) a run for their money as far as corrupt democrat machinery goes.

deimos on May 5, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Harpootlian is the lowest of the low. He exists so career criminals and perverts have someone to look down on. There is no depth to which he will not go. He’s always been this way, and he has been a Democratic party favorite, returning for another stint as Chairman.

This goes to show you what a bunch of corrupt, lowlife scum SC Democrats are.

Unfortunately, there is a strong and powerful contingent of SC Republicans who are every bit as corrupt – they tend to be somewhat more polite about it, but don’t get in the way of their thievery. Knott, Harrell, & Company are the ringleaders. People like Sanford, Haley, and Scott made their careers fighting these crooks, including the GOP ones. DeMint stayed more or less away from the rival factions.

But of all the vile, venomous, and loathsome creatures that crawl upon the earth, none is so utterly evil and repulsive as Dick Harpootlian.
