NYT: Obama may have ad-libbed us into a war

posted at 2:01 pm on May 5, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

There are only two words to describe the New York Times’ explanation of Barack Obama’s red-line dance – smart power.  According to anonymous “senior officials” at the White House, Obama’s advisors now claim that they had a precise calculation of what to say about Bashar al-Assad and the potential use of chemical weapons in Syria.  As soon as Obama went off the TelePrompter, though, that’s when he crossed them up and drew a red line the White House had not even contemplated.

Or so they claim now:

The origins of this dilemma can be traced in large part to a weekend last August, when alarming intelligence reports suggested the besieged Syrian government might be preparing to use chemical weapons. After months of keeping a distance from the conflict, Mr. Obama felt he had to become more directly engaged.

In a frenetic series of meetings, the White House devised a 48-hour plan to deter President Bashar al-Assad of Syria by using intermediaries like Russia and Iran to send a message that one official summarized as, “Are you crazy?” But when Mr. Obama emerged to issue the public version of the warning, he went further than many aides realized he would.

Moving or using large quantities of chemical weapons would cross a “red line” and “change my calculus,” the president declared in response to a question at a news conference, to the surprise of some of the advisers who had attended the weekend meetings and wondered where the “red line” came from. With such an evocative phrase, the president had defined his policy in a way some advisers wish they could take back.

“The idea was to put a chill into the Assad regime without actually trapping the president into any predetermined action,” said one senior official, who, like others, discussed the internal debate on the condition of anonymity. But “what the president said in August was unscripted,” another official said. Mr. Obama was thinking of a chemical attack that would cause mass fatalities, not relatively small-scale episodes like those now being investigated, except the “nuance got completely dropped.”

As a result, the president seems to be moving closer to providing lethal assistance to the Syrian rebels, even though he rejected such a policy just months ago. American officials have even discussed with European allies the prospect of airstrikes to take out Syrian air defenses, airplanes and missile delivery systems, if government use of chemical weapons is confirmed.

In case you’re wondering, this is the same Constitutional-scholar, brightest-guy-in-the-room, I’m-my-own-best-advisor President that assured Americans that he would bring “smart power” into American diplomacy.  How smart?  For a while, none of these people bothered to run to the New York Times to backpedal immediately — because they thought it had worked.  Assad didn’t use chemical weapons for months, and they congratulated themselves for their tough stand.

Now that the red line has blown up in their face, however, “senior advisors” can’t wait to run anonymously to the Gray Lady to explain that it was all a big mistake.  Daniel Halper notices this, too:

But if the tough rhetoric “succeeded” for a time, it appears to have backfired in the long-run. Because Syria has now apparently used chemical weapons, and President Obama is not willing to do anything about it.

Obama, though, seems inclined to at least explore intervention as a means to shore up his damaged credibility, rather than just admit that the “red line” rhetoric was empty from the beginning.  It might be the first time that a President has ad-libbed us into a war, although let’s hope it doesn’t happen at all.

Just to refresh everyone’s memory, here are my five rebuttals to the arguments for intervention. Note well that I don’t bother to include “salvaging Obama’s credibility” among the positive arguments for intervention, either.

If the media ever stops covering his ignorance then he’s in deep trouble.

Happy Nomad on May 5, 2013 at 2:33 PM

I used to think that. I thought that sooner or later, at least one of the mainstreamers would break ranks – maybe not because they felt it honorable or morally imperative, but perhaps just because they couldn’t resist the urge to be the next Woodward/Bernstein and bring down a (sitting duck) president. And then, the naked emperor having been identified, the rest of the media would grudgingly fall into “me too” line, even if only from being more afraid of being left out, than out of any ethical sense.

But I am no longer comforted by that thought. The MSM will not break ranks no matter what this administration does. They are irrevocably committed to this being THE push, THE final stride progressivism needs to break the back of the opposition once and for all. They are all in.

Agreed but there are signs of hope. Benghazi didn’t go away despite Hillary Clinton’s arrogant “At this point” comment, John Kerry’s declaration that the issue was dead, or Jay Carney declaring last September a long time ago. This administration is coming apart at the seams and the MSM has two choices. Report the news (even if glossed over as much as possible) or go down with the ship. The MSM are rats but they are rats with an innate sense of self-preservation.

Well, that is part of it. But they also realize that they were responsible for creating O’bama, and getting him elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.

And to do so, they censored what they knew about him, because they knew that if Americans knew the truth about him, he would never have gotten his Party’s nomination, much less be elected President.

And no, I am not talking about where he was born…

They cannot let him fail, because if he goes down, they all go down with him. Dr. Goebbels would be proud of each and every one of them.

This is starting to go beyond stupid into the area of dangerous.

One of my jobs here in my faculty is as a coach of our university Model United Nations teams. We compete internationally and so we select an elite group of interdisciplinary students and train them for about 10 months prior to competing. As part of our training we meet with professional diplomats not only from here but from the country we are assigned to represent. We meet with these latter because one of the rules is that we must accurately represent the true foreign policy of whatever country we represent.

And no matter what country’s diplomats we meet, no matter what other research we do, we have always learned that the most basic framework of international relations involves “red lines”. These are boundaries. These are the frontier outside of which we cannot go. A red line means “this far and no further. Period”

If a third year law/political science/medical student on our team can know this…easily…how can the President of the UNITED STATES not know this? This is how the world stumbles into crisis…not necessarily because of what he says this time, but because no one…NO ONE…can trust, confide or even understand what he means when he speaks…if he even does himself!

If I thought it would help I would say send him down to us for a week…my students will “train him up”…but I fear the problems are far deeper than even my students…or anyone else…can cure.

you can keep your doctor if you want to,

Fort Hood was work place violence,
Boston was a lone wolf incident not related to Islamic Terrorism,
Benghazi was a spontaneous protest do to a you tube video, the videographer by the way is still in jail while Hillary and the Lyin kING walk free to lie some more,
the most transparent administration ever threatens the whistle blowers on Benghazi after covering it up for 8 months,

Blaise on May 5, 2013 at 4:48 PM

I took a tour of the UN once. We were told at the beginning of what turned out to be a not inexpensive propaganda lecture that our tour would only be through the public spaces because the UN was a working organization. I don’t think I was able to hide my snort.

The problem with the UN and diplomacy in general is that foreign policy rarely matches up to reality. There are dark aspects to it that diplomacy won’t let the diplomats admit. Parts of the world are utterly as good as they are ever going to get. We essentially ignore whole parts of Africa because they are as developed as they are ever going to get without another round of colonialism. The OAS gets together literally in sight of the White House and celebrates “brotherhood” despite an anti-American slant of many of the South American governments. There is a thin line between diplomacy and hypocrisy.

Happy Nomad on May 5, 2013 at 5:10 PM

It’s why people can’t stand politicians and diplomats, but really speaking vaguely isn’t bad…speaking clearly is useful IF you’ve thought it thru, but if you haven’t it’s better to speak generally…

Dean Acheson, IIRC, gave the OK for North Korea to invade S. Korea when he excluded Korea from our defensive commitments in a speech…he said we would defend Japan and the Philippines…the UN had responsibility for Korea.

OH WELL…we see how that turned out…Whenever a POTUS or senior policy official is speaking about Foreign Policy UNLESS you’ve really thought it thru, just stick to platitudes….because ven if you have thought it thru, kind of, a la Dean, sometimes it turns out you really didn’t mean what you said….

Obama’s international adventures dovetail with his domestic policies.

Foreign: More and more wars. Fewer and fewer troops to fight them
Domestic: More and more debt. Fewer and fewer taxpayers to pay it off.

But don’t worry the UN has our back. Better fasten your chastity belt!!!!

BTW has it occurred to anyone that Chechens (on the order of the Boston bombers in fanaticism), Dagastani psychopaths, Syrian fundamentalists, Muslim Brotherhood fruitloops, Al Qaeda paranoids, Pakistani sociopaths, and every other assorted nut, weirdo, kook, oddball, cuckoo, ding-a-ling, screwball and dingbat of any and every kind whatsoever has now joined the rebel forces.. Arming them would be like air dropping weaponry to the Waffen SS on D Day.As Alan West has cogently pointed out–the window of opportunity for arming the Syrian Rebels has come and GONE. Any weapons given now will mostly wind up killing Americans.

Let me get this straight – if Assad gasses his own people that’s bad, but if he kills them with bombs and bullets it’s no big effin’deal?

myiq2xu on May 5, 2013 at 2:25 PM

It’s a big effin deal only if you use bullets inside the borders of the United States or bombs at marathons, otherwise, no. It’s all about standards.

DevilsPrinciple on May 5, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Is there any way to kick this college kid to the curb and get an adult into office?

Mimzey on May 5, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Why yes, yes there is a way. Place absolute (GOP) majorities in the house and Senate and 2014 and impeach him.

DevilsPrinciple on May 5, 2013 at 10:59 PM

Obama never said what would happen or if anything would happen if a red line was crossed.

I don’t see the problem with his statement.

nonpartisan on May 5, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Then why say it at all? Because he didn’t expect to be challenged on it, thereby making him sound like a moron?

itsspideyman on May 5, 2013 at 11:13 PM

he essentially made a threat when one was needed, yet he left a backdoor to get out of making an action essentially since ‘large’ is somewhat subjective

he’s doing the right thing by being cautious. bush prob would’ve sent troops in already.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is the sort of stupid talk one associates with typical DC liberal thinking.

Why would the most powerful man in the world need to have a way out?
Presidents usually have the use of the bully pulpit, allies and the most powerful military the world has ever seen. Diplomacy and back channel conversation are his “way out” if one is needed. When you run the greatest show on Earth, you get to call the shots.

Having said that, Obama is very ineffectual. Assad has been emboldened by this because of the effects of the “Arab Spring”. Egypt and particularly Benghazi are prime examples of Obama’s utter failure. His latest attempts to mollify and then threaten Assad underscore his failure. When Obama lost Egypt, there was no longer any threat to prevent Assad from going on the offensive.

I have a good friend at work. He’s Syrian. He told me that 348 people were butchered by Assad in his hometown last week. None of this butchery was reported in the papers or the LSM here or ANYWHERE.

So, why don’t you sit and down and have a big ole cup of STFU?

DevilsPrinciple on May 5, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Hope INC read this.

bazil9 on May 5, 2013 at 3:03 PM

B9 I was gone from the thread when you wrote that. You’ll probably never see this, but I’ll try to remember to tell you again next time I *see* you.

I read about that guy in Palm Beach the other day. Lefties are dangerous. They’ll oppress in the name of “What does it hurt….”

Your comment of Dept of Children/Families reminded me that some 30-40 years ago in the early days of the modern homeschool movement that some parents had real problems with school boards. Some surreptitiously homeschooled. Some had to go to court. Those problems continued in various states such as CA with threats and intimidation. Homeschoolers survived because enough parents were willing to go to the mat for their kids.

INC on May 6, 2013 at 1:40 AM

The only thing of importance here is that Obooba’s an idiot. Whether or not Assad used chemical weapons on his Muslims should be of no concern to the US.

What your President’s sole experience as a Community Organizer gets you…

…coming up with a plan to catch Mexican Drug Cartells engaged in gun trafficking by handing over throusands of guns and grenades without any way to track them once they are handed over….300+ and counting dead civilians killed by the weapons given to the drug cartells…an Attorney General perpetrating 3 Felony Counts of Perjury before Congress while trying to cover up the F*-up….

…an order from the Commander & Chief of the United States to our military, who had been fighting Al Qaeda – the perpetrators of 9/11 – & terrorists abroad for 8 years, to HELP Al Qaeda-backed rebels take over their own country (Libya)…the President/Sect of State entrusting the security of our Ambassador to Libya to those same Al Qaeda-associated rebels…denying requests for additional security from the Ambassador in Libya TWICE- after 2 previous attacks on the Ambassador’s compound & after his warning that Al Qaeda had started up 10 new terrorist training camps in Benghazi & that he would die if attacked a 3rd time…an order to a response team 3 1/2 hours away to ‘Stand Down’ and relieving the Commander in charge of his command because he voiced his intent to ignore that order….Navy Seals/Americans fighting for their lives for 12 hours being abandoned/betrayed….

What your President’s sole experience as a Community Organizer … and self-association with Islam / his father’s Anti-Colonial background …gets you…

…Benghazi…

…calling the terrorist attack on military soldiers preparing to deploy by a self-professed ‘Soldier of Allah’ who had threatened to behead fellow officers if they failed to convert to Islam…who was in contact with Al Qaeda leaders…who yelled ‘Allah Ackbar’ as he gunned down his fellow soldiers… a case of ‘work-place violence…

…musing aloud after the 1st report of the Boston bombing that he would not be surprised to find out it was an American upset that it was Tex Day…whisking away a Saudi student who had visited the White House numerous times in the last couple years, who Michelle visited in the Hospital, who planned to deport so quickly in a developing terrorist investigation…immediately – before the full investigation was over & before the entire threat to Americans had been uncovered yet – threatening the American people by declaring he would prosecute any American to the full extent of the law for any negative reactions to Muslims (despite the fact that we did not bring violence to them – they (Islamic Extremists) brought it to us)…

…helping another recognized terrorist group (The Muslim Brotherhood) seize control of their own nation…imposing an American-damaging agenda-driven Sequestration bill, cutting our military – while being $16 trillion in debt, and GIVING that terrorist group $1.5 billion + another $2 billion in weapons (24 F-16s fighter jets + 200 tanks)…

…NUMEROUS U.S. Embassies being overrun on the Anniversary of 9/11…ordering the Marines defending our Embassy in Cairo, Egypt – the nation we handed over & controlled by the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood – to NOT carry live ammo on the anniversary of 9/11 – resulting in the Embassy being overrun…the 1st Ambassador in 30 years to be assassinated in Benghazi on the anniversary of 9/11, especially due to a lack of additional security requested over and ober – especially after 2 previous terrorist attacks, requests all of which were denied…

easyt65 on May 6, 2013 at 9:53 AM

…being able to speak, especially intelligently, without a Tele-Prompter…

…no Budget, required by law, in almost 5 years…

…marxist agenda-driven re-distribution of wealth and a re-election campaign sign taken straight out of the historic Socialist propoganda footlocker…

…record-setting ‘monthly’, ‘annual’, & ‘total’ deficit-spending, … an accusation that the last President was ‘Un-American’ for adding $4 trillion in new debt over 8 years while adding $6 trillion in only 4 years…having no clue what a ‘shovel-ready’ project is…promising to ned pork projects yet passing a 1st bill that costs $875 billion and contained over 7,000 pieces of pork…

This Islamic-Extremist Sympathizing, Marxist-Socialist Community Organizer’s agenda & policies have devastated this nation, has given back everything PLUS that Islamic Extremists lost under the Bush administration, and now with his retreat from his Syrian ‘Red Line’ promise he has undermined the credibility of the U.S., giving North korea, Syria, Iran, etc the proverbial Green Light to do whatever they want….

easyt65 on May 6, 2013 at 10:04 AM

I’d like to ask all those anti-war people who castigated Bush for eight years: How many wars is THIS president going to get us into?

RebeccaH on May 6, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Without TOTUS he is just an incompetent, and failed, community organizer. God save America.

The “Red Line” thing worked
Until November the Sixth.
After that, who cares?

There will have to be a new Obama administration job. It will be named—— O.U.M. W.B. G. O.T.
