Israel bombs Syria. Again.

posted at 9:31 am on May 5, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

You’re to be forgiven if you’ve opened your browser to good ole’ Hot Gas this morning and think you’ve stepped into a scene from Groundhog Day. Israel bombed Syria? Didn’t we just cover this yesterday? Yes… yes we did. But this is the other bombing that happened overnight.

BEIRUT — Israeli warplanes bombed the outskirts of Damascus early Sunday for the second time in recent days, according to Syrian state media and reports from activists, signaling a sharp escalation in tensions between the neighboring countries that had already been exacerbated by the conflict raging in Syria.

Videos posted on the Internet by activists showed a huge fireball erupting on Mount Qassioun, a landmark hill overlooking the capital on which the Syrian government has deployed much of the firepower it is using against rebel-controlled areas surrounding the city.

Of course, Assad is saying that Israel is now engaged in a war with Syria and reports indicate he plans on declaring war on Israel shortly in return. It’s hard to imagine that Israel is terribly concerned about that this week, though, since Assad’s dance card currently seems to be pretty full. (Not to mention the fact that we can hope he’s still sane enough to realize that an outright military attack on Israel would serve as the perfect excuse for everyone else to immediately launch a ground war against him and get this mess over with once and for all.) But of course, Israel is playing it close to the vest and still doesn’t seem inclined to intervene in Assad’s business with his own people.

Instead, they’re noting that Syria continues to try to ship weapons – probably from Iran – to Hezbollah, and they’re not having any part of it.

Likud lawmaker and former Defense Committee chairman Tzahi Hanegbi stopped short Sunday morning of confirming that Israel had hours earlier struck Syrian targets for a second time in days, but warned that Israel would not tolerate a situation in which Hezbollah profited from the civil war currently raging within Syria.

A Western intelligence source said Israel carried out the air strike early Sunday, in an attack that shook Damascus with a series of powerful blasts and drove columns of fire into the night sky. Israel declined to comment, but Syria accused it of carrying out a raid on a military facility just north of the capital.

The coverage of this story that’s been coming from CNN and NBC this morning has been puzzling to say the least. The number one question I’m hearing being asked is, in various forms, “What does this mean for the United States? Does this put more pressure on Obama to act against Syria?”

That seems a bit off topic, doesn’t it? Obama’s interest, if any, is in the internal war Assad has going on with his own people. This doesn’t appear to be any sort of effort by Israel to depose or kill Syria’s embattled leader. They’re wiping out weapons before they wind up in the hands of people who have every intention of using them against Israel. And even if we were to ignore the motive behind the strikes, do any of these media geniuses really think the President is going to get up in the morning, read the paper and say, “Oh! Israel bombed Syria? I’d better get in on this action too!”

I’m fully prepared to be proven wrong, but I don’t see these actions changing much, if anything, in terms of the current standoff between Assad and the rebels. And I highly doubt that Syria will try to mount an actual ground offensive against Israel. Assad’s blustering about war will, I’m guessing, turn out to be just that… bluster.

A look at the short-range ballistic missiles that officials say Israel was targeting in Syria: http://apne.ws/13Wg3iZ -KM
===========================================================

A look at the missile reportedly targeted in Syria
By The Associated Press
— May. 5 10:28 AM EDT
**********************

Israel has carried out airstrikes against Syria twice in the past three days, targeting what officials say are shipments of highly accurate, Iranian-made guided missiles known as Fateh-110s believed to be on their way to Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group. Here are some details about the missile:

—WHAT IS THE FATEH-110?

The Fateh-110, or “Conqueror” in Farsi, is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Iran and first put into service in 2002. The Islamic Republic unveiled an upgraded version last year that improved the weapon’s accuracy and increased its range to 300 kilometers (185 miles). Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said at the time that the solid-fueled missile could strike with precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran’s arsenal.

—WHY ARE THE MISSILES IMPORTANT?

Israel worries the missiles could be transferred to Lebanon’s Hezbollah, providing a major boost to the Shiite militant group’s arsenal. The Fateh-110 is more accurate than anything Hezbollah is currently known to possess. Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in mid-2006 that ended in a stalemate. The missile would put almost all of Israel in range, and its precision guidance system poses a threat to Israeli infrastructure and military installations.

They’re just getting sloppy. The “cartel” or whatever it is that’s been behind “Obama” from the very beginning has always seemed a bit low-rent, but it just happens that the more you get away with, the less you bother about covering your tracks. It’s always easier to work off of events as they happen, but if they don’t happen just as you’d like, you go ahead create your own.

Putin will most likely be making moves in the Caucasus- against what’s left of autonomous Chechnya and Ramzan Kadyrov in particular. The Quisling regime of Serbia’s having just recognized the independence of Kosovo is also tied up in this. It looks like Putin traded Syria and Kosovo for a free hand in the Caucasus as a way to bolster his image at home.

Just looking at my coffee grounds here.

That’s funny because when I was about 11, me and my siblings always thot the lyrics led off with “I’m a troll, roll-y roll…”. Must have been one of those “kids say the darnedest things” episodes. But hearing it again and again a few years ago in Iraq, it doesn’t sound the same nor beautiful. Rather grating as folks in Highland Park and other Detroit communities found out.

Back to the topic, I think it’s the continuation of the end times… Wars and rumors of war, before the nations end up descending upon Israel. Never could conceive the US taking part against Israel but with the REB and likeminded haters leading the way, no longer implausible.

KOOLAID2 on May 5, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Not to mention the fact that we can hope he’s still sane enough to realize that an outright military attack on Israel would serve as the perfect excuse for everyone else to immediately launch a ground war against him

Who is “everyone else”?

Iraq, Turkey, and Jordan will “launch a ground war against him” if he attacks Israel?

I think he’s off shift and nonpartisan hasn’t checked in yet. Lousy watch turnover, I must say.

And how could I forget? It was HIS idea that they didn’t obstruct, and tried to repair – that he also threatened to veto – he LOVED the sequester then. This was after they not-obstructed the fiscal cliff deal that Barky blew up asking for 50% more “revenue”. THOSE a-hole obstructionists-of-everything.

And now a message from Lefty Superior Not Smart Power!!

Obama Aide On Syria’s Assad:
****************************

‘If He Drops Sarin On His Own People, What’s That Got Do Do With Us?’
10:12 AM, May 5, 2013•
***********************

President Barack Obama got ahead of himself and his advisers when he said that Syria using chemical weapons would cross a “red line,” the New York Times reports.

“How can we attack another country unless it’s in self-defense and with no Security Council resolution?” an unnamed Obama administration official tells the paper. “If he drops sarin on his own people, what’s that got to do with us?”

But they concluded that drawing a firm line might deter Mr. Assad. In addition to secret messages relayed through Russia, Iran and other governments, they decided that the president would publicly address the matter.

Several officials said they recalled no discussion about the “red line” phrase but suspected that it came out of the election-year conversation about Iran and how far to allow its nuclear program to progress before being forced to take action. It was a concept that was “embedded in people’s prefrontal cortex,” one of the officials said.

While surprised at the president’s use of the term in regard to Syria on Aug. 20, advisers concluded that it had succeeded, at least for a while, since months passed with no chemical weapons attack.

But if the tough rhetoric “succeeded” for a time, it appears to have backfired in the long-run. Because Syria has now apparently used chemical weapons, and President Obama is not willing to do anything about it.

Might very well be the case. Bibi using the Syrian issue to start the Iran ball rolling? One those dominoes start toppling it is hard to get them stopped and our magnificent duo of Obama/Kerry isn’t quick enough to duck.

Obama’s interest, if any, is in the internal war Assad has going on with his own people.

So when Quaddaffi was having an internal war against his own people in Libya, the U.S. had a “responsibility to protect” (or R2P, as the geniuses in the Obama administration named it) and that is why we intervened with our military might in Libya, but now that Assad has an internal war against his own people in Syria, it’s none of our business?

Just wondering what our policy is. This “smart power” certainly is inconsistent, isn’t it?

AZCoyote on May 5, 2013 at 1:31 PM

Obama hasn’t heard of any attack by Israel on Syria. He will look into the situation and get all the facts before getting back to us. The White House has asked investigative teams to be ready to leave for the mid-east in three or four weeks.

Seriously, I’ve asked this many times, -to what extent does the US have the ability to shut down, for example, Egyptian F-16′s, by our US military or manufacturer maintenance staff walking off the job and no longer shipping parts? Is there a back door in IFF that we could mess with?

Israel knows how to handle terrorists, they are surrounded by them, they are called muslims, search and destroy…on the other hand democrats play footsie for the hispanic vote and allow anyone to cross the border, give out student visas without checking on them , allow them welfare, and still bark about immigration….close the borders…learn from Israel…obama resign and take your clown administration with you…pack the vw clown car and get out…let adults govern

Not to mention, the Syrian rebels now find themselves in an odd position of having Israel as a pseudo-ally in their fight.

PJ Emeritus on May 6, 2013 at 11:01 AM

The Israeli intelligence service is miles ahead of our own, maybe the greatest in the world. Bibi knows something that we don’t know, and may have bombed something containing weapons that could have later been used against Isreael, depending on who wins the Syrian civil war.

If Israeli warplanes got to within “the outskirts” of Damascus without being shot down, the Syrian air defenses must be weak, and the Israelis could have bombed Damascus itself if they wanted to, but the civilian population of Syria was obviously not the target.

We don’t have any real friends in Syria–Assad is a Baathist soul mate of Saddam Hussein, and the “rebels” are using chemical weapons, so if we let two enemies of “the things we believe in” kill each other, that leaves fewer enemies for us and for Israel.

If Assad is trying to protect himself against rebels in his own country, he’s probably pulling troops out of Lebanon, which gives Israel an opporunity to create a buffer state between itself and Syria, possibly leading to freedom for the Lebanese Christians. This could also lead to Kurdish refugees fleeing into northern Iraq, which is more peaceful now than Syria, and protected by the American “no-fly zone”.

Let’s stay out of Syria and let Smart Power handle this–Bibi Netanyahu.
