Obama to Mexico: A lot of the guns here came from us

posted at 4:01 pm on May 4, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Excuse me, Barack Obama actually said “the United States,” but the headline would be more accurate.  While the President told an audience in Mexico that “Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,” he somehow forgot to mention that thousands of them came specifically under the auspices of the ATF and the Department of Justice during his first term (via Real Clear Politics):

And we also recognize that most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States.  (Applause.) I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms, and as President I swore an oath to uphold that right and I always will.  But at the same time, as I’ve said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people.  That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It’s the right thing to do.  (Applause.)  So we’ll keep increasing the pressure on gun traffickers who bring illegal guns into Mexico.  We’ll keep putting these criminals where they belong — behind bars.

Really?  So what’s going on with the investigation into Operation Fast & Furious?  Last we heard, the Attorney General of the United States was obstructing Congressional access to materials related to the ATF and DoJ operation, even in the face of Congressional subpoenas and a contempt of Congress citation.  Those firearms were used in hundreds of murders in Mexico and at least two in the United States, but so far Obama’s own Cabinet official won’t cooperate in the investigation into how the administration put those weapons into the hands of those criminals.

Michael Ramirez puts the disconnect between Obama’s rhetoric and actions in its proper perspective:

entagor on May 4, 2013 at 4:35 PM

See… the GOP should play this up. Come out… hold a presser.. publicly agree with Obama and hold up the gun that killed the border patrol agent and explain in plain English who sold that gun that came from the US.

Then.. the GOP should say they want to help solve this problem of guns going from the US to Mexico.. and explain why we need further hearings into Fast and Furious. Throw out a few commercials. Make it real plain.

Every time I hear anything on gun control… all I think about is how we need to keep guns out of the hands of this administration. How many people have died at the hands of the assault weapons sold to drug cartels in Mexico by Obama? Thousands of these guns have been lost.

Barack Obama’s Gun Running Merchant Of Death Program, Operation Fast and Furious, which should rightfully be called Obama’s Operation Murder and Mendacity, his Rolling 9/11 against Mexican civilians, has, so far, resulted in the murders of hundreds of people, including tens of children, and that is again just so far and only counts Obama’s victims where the ObamaGuns were recovered. Serial killers Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer combined didn’t kill nearly as many people as serial killer Barack “Bloody Hands” Obama. Of course, Obama’s Sheeple and MSM Sycophants continue to see nothing, hear nothing, speak nothing and know nothing. Bloody Bastard Barack needs to get the plank out of his own eye.

VorDaj on May 4, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Even without Fast & Furious, the claim is bogus. It comes from a 2009 GAO report that only considers guns that were submitted to ATF for tracing. Obviously, Mexico would only do that with guns they already believed came from the U.S.

From The GAO report:

In 2008, of the almost 30,000 firearms that the Mexican Attorney General’s office said were seized, only around 7,200, or approximately a quarter, were submitted to ATF for tracing.

Furthermore:

The majority of the sales linked back to the U.S. according to this trace data, actually come from government to government sales, not from normal sales made in American gun shops. Despite this fact, anti-gun groups and members of Congress use this misleading data to push for more gun control and regulations on retail stores.

So, not only did Obama and Holder send guns to Mexico, the Mexican government allowed guns we sold them to end up in the hands of drug cartels.

RadClown on May 4, 2013 at 4:50 PM

So in Mexico… the beheadings are happening to people who were shot first? Even if the answer is yes, who thinks that they would not behead the exact same people sans a gun to kill them with first?

Mexico is it’s own problem aside from any outside help… as is Chicago.

On another angle… it’s a shame that someone didn’t yell out “we blame Holder” or some such just as Barry tried to make US the blame for Mexico’s ills.

RalphyBoy on May 4, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Where “common-sense” is whatever Dear Leader says it is. Evidently it is “common sense” for the US government to hand over thousands of guns to Mexican gangs and drug cartels, without “common sense background checks”, so we can try to track them and see what they do with them. Apparently their “common sense” doesn’t inform people in Comrade O’s admin what such people will do with guns.

Where “dangerous people” includes right-wing Tea Party types, like the ones the entire MSM and Dear Leader’s adviser, Axelrod, were eager to pin the Boston Marathon bombing on, based on no evidence whatsoever.

While the President told an audience in Mexico that “Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,” he somehow forgot to mention that thousands of them came specifically under the auspices of the ATF and the Department of Justice during his first term.

The REB is LYING again. Even without considering the Fast and Furious gun-running, it’s an absolute LIE that “most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States.” The true figure is somewhere between 7 and 12%, depending which years over which you measure your statistics.

The left’s statistics on which the REB’s lies are based are false and designed to mislead. The “94,000 weapons recovered from Mexican drug cartels” represents a small fraction of the total. They are the cases where the Mexicans examined the weapons and from the markings determined that they were of US origin and shared that data with the US. The “64,000 – a 70 per cent ratio” were those that the US subsequently confirmed were of US origin.

The total number of weapons of all origins confiscated by Mexican law enforcement is far, far higher than the 94,000 number the liberals use. Of that far higher number, the number confirmed of US origin is more like 7-12%%.

In short, the REB is lying again. He seems to have no problems with spreading these lies liberally.

Obama to Mexico: A lot of the guns here came from us ME

And the root cause of gun violence in Mexico is illegal recreational drugs. I believe that those aren’t big movers on the politically conservative side of the aisle, you’ll find their use heavily concentrated among Obama’s friends, his Choom gang, and lefty political comrades.

RJL on May 4, 2013 at 6:25 PM

Where guns used in Mexican crimes really come from:

So, if not from the U.S., where do they come from? There are a variety of sources:

– The Black Market. Mexico is a virtual arms bazaar, with fragmentation grenades from South Korea, AK-47s from China, and shoulder-fired rocket launchers from Spain, Israel and former Soviet bloc manufacturers.

– Russian crime organizations. Interpol says Russian Mafia groups such as Poldolskaya and Moscow-based Solntsevskaya are actively trafficking drugs and arms in Mexico.

- South America. During the late 1990s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) established a clandestine arms smuggling and drug trafficking partnership with the Tijuana cartel, according to the Federal Research Division report from the Library of Congress.

– Asia. According to a 2006 Amnesty International Report, China has provided arms to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Chinese assault weapons and Korean explosives have been recovered in Mexico.

– The Mexican Army. More than 150,000 soldiers deserted in the last six years, according to Mexican Congressman Robert Badillo. Many took their weapons with them, including the standard issue M-16 assault rifle made in Belgium.

– Guatemala. U.S. intelligence agencies say traffickers move immigrants, stolen cars, guns and drugs, including most of America’s cocaine, along the porous Mexican-Guatemalan border. On March 27, La Hora, a Guatemalan newspaper, reported that police seized 500 grenades and a load of AK-47s on the border. Police say the cache was transported by a Mexican drug cartel operating out of Ixcan, a border town.

The Self-Exalted One obviously feels that there aren’t nearly enough “American” guns being used to commit murders in Mexico. Otherwise, there would be no reason for Fast & Furious.

In fact, the existence of that gun-running program, operated by ATF, makes a lie out of his whole premise. And shows how necessary violence against innocents is to justify his pursuit of his dogmas. Whether on gun control, open borders (and infinite “undocumented voters”),”Muslim outreach”, or whatever.

Fast & Furious, Benghazi, careless drone attacks with high collateral damage, it’s all of a piece. This is a man who not only does not care if bystanders die as a result of his drive toward an imagined Utopia, he’s counting on it. To whip up public sympathy and support for him. But somehow, the fact that it keeps backfiring on him, even with the MSM in his back pocket, just never seems to register.

Then again, he may simply hate everyone who isn’t exactly like him so much that he just likes killing them. Or gets a thrill from the idea that he can do so at his whim, with no consequences.

The line between megalomania, egomania, narcissism, and flat-out homicidal psychosis is a very thin one, indeed.

I’m not sure which side of it this man is on.
