An armed march on Washington? Let’s not. Update: Kokesh an anti-war smear merchant?

posted at 2:31 pm on May 4, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

Before we get started on this story, I would like to take a moment to point out that you’d be hard pressed to find any point where I’ve been anything but a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, as I would hope most regular readers know. I’ve taken flack for it from a lot of people this year, ranging from family members to folks in the media. But even approaching it from that sort of position, I’ve got to say that this is a really bad idea.

A march on Washington with loaded rifles

Libertarian activist and radio host Adam Kokesh is hoping to get 1,000 people to march on Washington on July 4 — armed with loaded rifles. The plan, launched with a Facebook group today, is to gather on the Virginia side of the Potomac, where gun laws are lax, and then march across the bridge with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders into the District, where openly carrying weapons is generally prohibited.

“This will be a non-violent event,” the Facebook group warns, “unless the government chooses to make it violent.” Already, over 200 people have said they’ll attend the march.

The plan is to march over the bridge, around the Capitol building, the Supreme Court and the White House, all with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders. Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine a worse idea, particularly in the midst of a heated debate with gun grabbers in the government. Kokesh describes this as an act of “civil disobedience” but it falls well short of that goal. If he wanted to promote an act of peacefully breaking the law to make a point, it would certainly be worthy of considering. For example, you could take a large number of people to block the entrance to the main office of the A.T.F and force the police to arrest and remove you. But this is something very different.

Showing up with a thousand (or even a few hundred) people openly carrying loaded weapons and marching toward the Capitol is not something that law enforcement is going to play around with, particularly when you announce it in advance. And they’re not going to allow the march to proceed “peacefully” either. Normally I’d write this off as a bad idea that wouldn’t gain widespread support, but the problem here is that it doesn’t need widespread support. It would really only take a few hundred really upset people to get it rolling. And even if most of them intend it to be peaceful, when the officials show up to arrest them, weapons drawn, you have the potential for disaster which Rick Moran foresees.

With the furor over gun rights and the government’s efforts at gun control, this march is likely to attract enough people to make it an extraordinarily dangerous event. Who knows what kooks will be marching? Most marchers will no doubt be level headed and sincere in their desire for a non-violent event. But it only takes one unbalanced person to cause a tragedy.

Sensible gun owners, along with the NRA, are making the point that the government needs to respect the rights of law abiding, responsible gun owners and spend their time chasing the actual criminals. There could be no better gift to hand to gun rights opponents than to have a bunch of people get arrested for breaking established (if really bad) gun laws or, worse, getting in a shootout with the cops. This is not the type of representation we need in this debate.

UPDATE: (Jazz) From the Boss Emeritus. Was this all a dodge?

[Kokesh] marched in uniform in mock patrols for the anti-war movement, paraded around holding an upside-down American flag (see Jonn Lilyea for more), was arrested for defacing signs, and traveled to Germany to urge soldiers to abandon their posts and seek aid and comfort with his anti-war minions.

Kokesh, believe it or not, is now running as a Republican candidate for Congress in New Mexico. And, believe it or not, he is getting positive exposure on at least one Fox News show. He has the backing of Ron Paul, the Republican Liberty Caucus, and the 9/12 Project.

The New Mexico Republican Party has its head in the sand. If you have friends and family in New Mexico, make sure they know who the real Adam Kokesh is.

He is an anti-war smear merchant in GOP clothing. Spread the word.

Take a gander at homicide rates and violent crime rates after their bans. Then go take a look at what happened with violent crime rates in the many states that became shall issue states in the last 30 years.

I know your brain probably barely operates above that of a 5 year old having a temper tantrum, but I encourage you to provide us with any supporting data that gun control or gun bans reduce homicides or violent crime in general. Take your time. We’ll wait.

I agree. please take one to the airport and insist to bring it on the plane. If the TSA says no, time to break out that “2nd amendment remedy”

DBear on May 4, 2013 at 3:13 PM

Ever considered getting a catscan, it might be time.

If I did bring a gun to the airport I would be denied passage on an airplane, and would of course have to deal with the process of being denied which today involves all sorts of physically invasive acts that lefties like yourself practice openly on the streets of San Francisco.

Unfortunately the law consists of that today but that doesn’t mean I have to like it; however, I can choose not to travel on an airplane at all or choose not to bring a gun when I do.

Tell me something, who do you think is a bigger danger to yourself and other passengers: A single person with a simple gun riding quietly on the flight, or a pilot operating an incredibly sophisticated and complicated machine in which you sit at 36,000 feet?

Mimzey on May 4, 2013 at 3:26 PM

it is armed rebellion.

HitNRun on May 4, 2013 at 3:19 PM

It would certainly be deemed so by the Left and would not be distinguished as anything less than an armed insurrection, regardless of the purported reason of the organizers.

But this is an Interesting thought experiment.

Some are ready to rebel. Many are not. Seem folks think more needs to be done and that being deliberately provocative would spur others to act. Indeed, that is a possibility.

But with the government currently staffed as it is, the media being willing accomplices…

Bad idea.

There may in fact come a time when we need to rise up in such a fashion.

I don’t believe that time is here.

Yet.

catmman on May 4, 2013 at 3:27 PM

Yeah armed marches in RED states, notcoach….as my comment is in “moderation”, probably for the word “N3gro3s” I will summarize….

Rosa Parks didn’t have a group of armed people with her…neither did King at Selma…..

You want to go all SDS/Weather Underground…or Hutaree Militia when what works best is SCLC tactics…and Heller…a single individual…unarmed or a single person claiming their rights…your approach is, in the words of Buffalo Springfield, “A field say for the Heat.”

The best argument against the anti’s is that as a group we ARE law abiding citizens. And while I disagree vehemently with the DC law, breaking it is NOT the way to go about it, not to mention the PR nightmare it will be. There’s other ways to change the law. This seems to be an assent to gun-prohibitionists position. I’m not sure whether those who disagree with the “march” understand the dialectical they are presenting, without resolving the conflict.

Have they succeeded in repressive tolerance regarding firearms? You are worried about “one person with a gun”. You are worried what it would look like. You are worried about persons armed and bearing simply walking upon the grounds of the capitol of these United States. Should D.C. simply be a 10-square mile fortress? Bottom line: you fear what they have told you to fear. If persons are not seen more with firearms, then it becomes “rare and scarey”. Left-wingers do and say whatever they please, as aggressive as they wish, with no repercussions. If we state and believe firearms are a right, why would one not act upon, and exercise, that?

side note – They should use it to draw attention to abortionists. Here’s a couple signs: Kermit Gosnell is the murderer, not me. Kermit ends life, I defend life.

You’ll just stick with your routine top-25-most-dangerous-cities-in-the-US crime rate, eh?

1,130 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The city reported 17.5 murders per 100,000 people. The national average is 4.7 murders per 100,000 people.

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-25-most-dangerous-cities-in-america-2012-10?op=1

Good for you, though. I guess you’ve got to draw the line somewhere.

rogerb on May 4, 2013 at 3:41 PM

That’s a good point. This is the one type of demonstration where violent anti-protesters would stay home. The city would be cleaner and safer as a result.

Sing DAISY, HAL. You know you want to. Just sing it, HAL.

How do you know the pilot of the plane in which you are riding on at 36,000 feet isn’t a Hot Air contributor? Jeez…imagine if THAT guy went all Bill Ayers…6 miles straight down.

Time will tell. The human trash got defeated on their last attempt at gun banning but as Barky said, it was just the first round. Their focus will change; invading gun shows, shooting events, gun ranges, and doing whatever they can to portray us all as bloodthirsty savages (think OWS but with nicer clothes, washed bodies, and teeth).

What an incredibly boneheaded stunt. Could there be a more effective way to immediately alienate the moderates and even many conservatives than by a flagrantly illegal armed march on our nation’s capital?

Who thought this up, Bloomberg?
