An armed march on Washington? Let’s not. Update: Kokesh an anti-war smear merchant?

posted at 2:31 pm on May 4, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

Before we get started on this story, I would like to take a moment to point out that you’d be hard pressed to find any point where I’ve been anything but a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, as I would hope most regular readers know. I’ve taken flack for it from a lot of people this year, ranging from family members to folks in the media. But even approaching it from that sort of position, I’ve got to say that this is a really bad idea.

A march on Washington with loaded rifles

Libertarian activist and radio host Adam Kokesh is hoping to get 1,000 people to march on Washington on July 4 — armed with loaded rifles. The plan, launched with a Facebook group today, is to gather on the Virginia side of the Potomac, where gun laws are lax, and then march across the bridge with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders into the District, where openly carrying weapons is generally prohibited.

“This will be a non-violent event,” the Facebook group warns, “unless the government chooses to make it violent.” Already, over 200 people have said they’ll attend the march.

The plan is to march over the bridge, around the Capitol building, the Supreme Court and the White House, all with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders. Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine a worse idea, particularly in the midst of a heated debate with gun grabbers in the government. Kokesh describes this as an act of “civil disobedience” but it falls well short of that goal. If he wanted to promote an act of peacefully breaking the law to make a point, it would certainly be worthy of considering. For example, you could take a large number of people to block the entrance to the main office of the A.T.F and force the police to arrest and remove you. But this is something very different.

Showing up with a thousand (or even a few hundred) people openly carrying loaded weapons and marching toward the Capitol is not something that law enforcement is going to play around with, particularly when you announce it in advance. And they’re not going to allow the march to proceed “peacefully” either. Normally I’d write this off as a bad idea that wouldn’t gain widespread support, but the problem here is that it doesn’t need widespread support. It would really only take a few hundred really upset people to get it rolling. And even if most of them intend it to be peaceful, when the officials show up to arrest them, weapons drawn, you have the potential for disaster which Rick Moran foresees.

With the furor over gun rights and the government’s efforts at gun control, this march is likely to attract enough people to make it an extraordinarily dangerous event. Who knows what kooks will be marching? Most marchers will no doubt be level headed and sincere in their desire for a non-violent event. But it only takes one unbalanced person to cause a tragedy.

Sensible gun owners, along with the NRA, are making the point that the government needs to respect the rights of law abiding, responsible gun owners and spend their time chasing the actual criminals. There could be no better gift to hand to gun rights opponents than to have a bunch of people get arrested for breaking established (if really bad) gun laws or, worse, getting in a shootout with the cops. This is not the type of representation we need in this debate.

UPDATE: (Jazz) From the Boss Emeritus. Was this all a dodge?

[Kokesh] marched in uniform in mock patrols for the anti-war movement, paraded around holding an upside-down American flag (see Jonn Lilyea for more), was arrested for defacing signs, and traveled to Germany to urge soldiers to abandon their posts and seek aid and comfort with his anti-war minions.

Kokesh, believe it or not, is now running as a Republican candidate for Congress in New Mexico. And, believe it or not, he is getting positive exposure on at least one Fox News show. He has the backing of Ron Paul, the Republican Liberty Caucus, and the 9/12 Project.

The New Mexico Republican Party has its head in the sand. If you have friends and family in New Mexico, make sure they know who the real Adam Kokesh is.

He is an anti-war smear merchant in GOP clothing. Spread the word.

Jazz, you’re such a panty waist. The fact of the matter is that if we want to keep our 2nd Amendment rights we need to be just as comfortable and proactive with them as we are with our 1st Amendment rights. Falling short of the above only provides ammunition (no pun intended) for those who wish to take our natural law right of self defense away from us. There is absolutely nothing wrong in Americans practicing both their 1st Amendment rights and their 2nd Amendment rights in a peaceful demonstration.

Don’t be naive. If you can’t see the 50,000 things that could go wrong and absolutely sabotage something like this, turning it around as a disaster for supporters of the 2nd Amendment, your not thinking clearly or hard enough.

There’s nothing wrong, in theory, with someone practicing their rights. There’s everything wrong in practice when you realize how easy it would be for a plant, or a crazy nutjob, or another outside force, to turn this into a optical and actual massacre.

MikeknaJ on May 4, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Many of you worry too much. I doubt this will come to fruition because of the massive wailing and gnashing of teeth (*cough cough* JazzShaw *cough cough*)that will surely ensue, but I have no problem with law abiding citizens practicing their 2nd Amendment rights.

NotCoach on May 4, 2013 at 2:57 PM

I think all gun owners and TEA Party folk should set aside an afternoon and flex their muscle all across the land – without guns – the first time.

Let the local, state and feds see the protests all across the country. Kind of like the small leftist protests only on a much larger scale and definitely much more peaceful show of force.

If they don’t get the message the first time and want to continue down the road to more citizen control, then a second rally could be held where everyone brings their weapons.

We have to start using the leftist’s tactics if we are going to defeat them and large protests seem to be the only thing they understand.

The plan is to march over the bridge, around the Capitol building, the Supreme Court and the White House, all with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders.

The first two would coincide with the March for Life, although the march on the White House is not part of that.

All-in-all, let’s consider… a noted anti-government activist plans to gather 1,000 like-minded anti-government activists to march on the center of the government while armed. Yep. There’s no way that’ll be interpreted as a threat or as a prime opportunity for a coup.

For a guy who wants to make the case that people can be trusted with the right to bear arms, I’d say he’s doing a bang-up job accomplishing the exact opposite.

There’s several possible guesses that one could make as to what will happen (let’s assume that this guy gets his requisite 1,000 people and doesn’t pull a “Gotcha! Made ya look!” stunt):

1.) The Federal government will take preemptive action, and arrest the organizers and possibly participants on conspiracy charges.

2.) The Federal government will prevent them from entering the District, at which point either a firefight will ensue or they will peaceably dissolve.

3.) The Federal government will permit them to enter the District, but only under the escort of the U.S. army, at which point a firefight will ensue or the march will occur peaceably.

4.) The Federal government will permit them to enter the District, taking absolutely no action against them, at which point either the march will occur peaceably or a coup-attempt will ensue.

Personally I’d bet on either option 1 or 2, although 4 is a possibility so long as the President and the Congress make plans to be elsewhere. But given that it’d be on July 4th, I really doubt number 4.

Stoic Patriot on May 4, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Obama WANTS something like this to happen and then go terribly wrong. They won’t be a pack of Lone Wolves. Nosiree, Bob. They’ll be said to have marched in our places as sort of representatives of all of us. Then, we will all be condemned…because, after all, we aren’t poor, oppressed, non-assimilated, misunderstood jihadists that may have sustained brain damage from boxing or fell under the Svengali-like spell of an older brother. They have been waiting for something like this since Oklahoma City.

1,000 people to march on Washington — armed with loaded rifles.

The administration would make sure that this ended in violence and 1,000 arrests.

However

1,000 muslims marching on Washington — armed with loaded pressure cookers

… would most certainly result in nothing but praise and adulation from obama and his state-run media.

It’s just one school, which is a choice school. That means no one has to go there. There are lots of other options in the immediate vicinity.

The New York City School system is filled with many “specialty” schools of this type, some of which have even formed their own sub-networks, which have established, within certain broad guidelines, their own curricula. Some focus more on science and technology, others on languages and international studies, and still others on teaching English as a Second Language.

So one school choosing to introduce one specific language to a self-selected group of students is really no big deal. No sign of the apocalypse, in other words.

Schadenfreude on May 4, 2013 at 3:14 PM

I’m of a mixed mind….1000 folk are just enough for the Feds to try to stop it and just too few for the stopping to be impossible. Now a march of 50-100,000 folk carrying is way too many for the feds to stop and would send a very clear signal. Too many of our pro-second amendment elites (media and politicians) are all in favor of the right until it looks like an actual stand need by made and they become raving moderates speaking of the foolishness of the event or action being planned.

The problem of moderation is that it simply slows the march of the grabbers. It does not stop it or reverse it.

Don’t know if this is a prank or not, but Leftists don’t hesitate to go on violent rampages in cities and take over parks in complete violation of the law with relative impunity. This seems civil and law-abiding (given the Second Amendment) by comparison. Just sayin.

Incredibly dumb idea that could end badly in a number of ways.

“This will be a non-violent event,” the Facebook group warns, “unless the government chooses to make it violent.”

An armed march on Washington is, by definition, a potentially violent event. It’s not something you do unless you’re playing for keeps, and with a lot more than 999 other guys.

I don’t know. On one hand the debate is being won, on the other hand either gun owners can be “trusted” with guns or they can’t. If 1,000 gun-owning Americans gathering in one spot and exercising their 2nd Amendment rights are to be considered some sort of threat then the battle is already lost.

“Shall not be infringed”. Ever.

Bishop on May 4, 2013 at 3:06 PM

The one’s not to be trusted would be the trained agitators.
This event would be too easy for them to exploit and an unexpected prize after the defeat of the gun bill.
I’ll sick of crap like this. Another example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

The left never falls for this kind of crap. They let small victories stand and build on them.
In the words of Van Jones..”I dropped the radical poses for the radical ends.” (something like that.)

Mimzey on May 4, 2013 at 3:19 PM

Goodbye house of representatives. The GOP is turning into a fringe militia group.

rubberneck on May 4, 2013 at 2:41 PM

How do you know that they are even Republicans?

I support the Second Amendment and I am a libertarian.

In 2009, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Wayne LaPierre celebrated the grand opening of a Las Vegas shooting range together – a project for which Mr Reid secured $61 million in Federal funding for the owners.

As for the House of Representatives, 94% of the districts held by the GOP were won by Romney and Obama only won 32 congressional districts in red states, which are where the majority of congressional district pick-ups are. Blue states have lost districts. The only red state to lose a congressional district after the 2010 Census was Louisiana. Only one solid blue state, Washington, picked up a seat. 8 blue states have lost districts and one purple state has.

Besides, there is the turnout disparity between presidential years and midterms…

Resist We Much on May 4, 2013 at 3:19 PM

If you’re going across into Washington D.C. with the intent of committing civil disobedience and being peaceably arrested, style, then I support your initiative.

But this

“This will be a non-violent event,” the Facebook group warns, “unless the government chooses to make it violent.” Already, over 200 people have said they’ll attend the march.

doesn’t sound very intelligent. If you’re carrying a loaded weapon in a manner that is prohibited, you’re breaking the law. The police have the responsibility then to arrest you. If you resist arrest while carrying a loaded weapon, they have the right to shoot you unless you’re very delicate about your behavior. Doing this en masse is not tantamount to, it is armed rebellion.

No, thank YOU. A lot of hand wringing about a basic Constitutional right being exercised.

Everyone seems to be worried about what might happen before anything has occurred, that’s creepily similar to the argument against gun possession by the anti crowd: “What if that dude with the rifle shoots someone, we need to take his guns away before it happens”.

And?

If more guns and less restrictive gun laws increased crime and the homicide rate, then we should have the highest rates in both in the history of the country.

The fact is that we have the lowest rate in both – according to the DOJ – since before the 1968 firearms act.

Yeah boy! Same nonsense that bayam tried to pull. Please read carefully what I posted. A reduction in forearm anything does not mean a reduction in any crime. I’ll give you a helping hand: Look at DC and Chicago, and also the UK and Australia (both banned guns). Take a gander at homicide rates and violent crime rates after their bans. Then go take a look at what happened with violent crime rates in the many states that became shall issue states in the last 30 years.

I know your brain probably barely operates above that of a 5 year old having a temper tantrum, but I encourage you to provide us with any supporting data that gun control or gun bans reduce homicides or violent crime in general. Take your time. We’ll wait.
