Report: State Department’s Benghazi review panel now under investigation; Update: 3 al Qaeda operatives took part in the attack, sources say

posted at 5:21 pm on May 2, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Last December, the Accountability Review Board report on the happenings surrounding the terror attack in Benghazi concluded that “systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels” (but still below then-Secretary Hillary Clinton) and “inadequate” security measures were to blame for the lack of preparedness, the muddled response, and the deaths of four Americans — and ever since, Clinton and other administration officials have regularly referred lingering questions on the attack to the board’s report. Just yesterday, Jay Carney insisted that “the Accountability Review Board which investigated this matter — and I think in no one’s estimation sugarcoated what happened there or pulled any punches when it came to holding accountable individuals that they felt had not successfully executed their responsibilities — heard from everyone and invited everyone. So there was a clear indication there that everyone who had something to say was welcome to provide information to the Accountability Review Board.”

Now, however, Congress is getting ready for more hearings on Benghazi with self-proclaimed whistleblowers, which House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa has suggested will “expose new facts” that the Obama administration has deliberately “tried to suppress.” So… does that mean that the ARB panel perhaps conspicuously neglected to interview some of those key witnesses? The State Department’s Office of Inspector General is investigating just that, reports Fox News:

The IG’s office is said by well-placed sources to be seeking to determine whether the Accountability Review Board, or ARB — led by former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen — failed to interview key witnesses who had asked to provide their accounts of the Benghazi attacks to the panel.

The IG’s office notified the department of the “special review” on March 28, according to Doug Welty, the congressional and public affairs officer of the IG’s office.

This disclosure marks a significant turn in the ongoing Benghazi case, as it calls into question the reliability of the blue-ribbon panel that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convened to review the entire matter. Until the report was concluded, she and all other senior Obama administration officials regularly refused to answer questions about what happened in Benghazi.

For months, the administration’s constant refrain was that “this is an ongoing investigation” and that they had to wait for the results, and then they switched gears and directed everyone’s attention to the conclusions of a report that might itself turn out to be — how shall I put this delicately — incomplete? Faulty? Intentionally half-assed?

But, meh, whatever — Benghazi happened “a long time ago,” after all. What difference, at this point, does it make?

Update: To answer my own/Clinton’s question about what difference, at this point, the administration’s handling in the run-up to and fallout from the Benghazi terror attack makes: Kind of a big one. CNN is reporting that several Yemeni men belonging to AQ took part in, and were possibly sent in to instigate, the attack, according to several sources:

One senior U.S. law enforcement official told CNN that “three or four members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula,” or AQAP, took part in the attack.

Another source briefed on the Benghazi investigation said Western intelligence services suspect the men may have been sent by the group specifically to carry out the attack. But it’s not been ruled out that they were already in the city and participated as the opportunity arose.

The attack on the compound and subsequently on a “safe-house” to which Americans had been evacuated left four U.S. citizens dead, including the ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

If the AQAP members were dispatched to Benghazi, it would be further evidence of a new level of co-operation among jihadist groups throughout the Middle East and North Africa, counterterrorism analysts say.

Is it possible that my wildest dreams will come true and Hillary Clinton will finally, definitively be caught in a lie?

Of course not. Because in my dreams, when a Clinton gets caught in a lie, they actually have to pay for it. But in reality, public opinion poll surge, the people who caught the Clintons lying become anathema, and all we really get for our satisfaction is something like Bill being disbarred.

I’ll take it. Disbar her ass.

I do believe, when the history books are written, that we will all look back at the day Barack Obama went 2 – 22 on the b-ball court as the day the myth of Obama finally was broken.

The Clintons piled up 130 bodies from Arkansas to the White House neatly covered by the machinery in place that put the community organizer in the WH too. America better wake up fast and ignore the alphabet media that the WH controls and edits ALL. It’ll be too late when all the books are written telling what the last eight years did to our Country. Both parties are at fault, look at the list of federal agencies easily googled (list of government agencies) and read them all from A-Z and this is why we are taxed to death funding these federal entitlement programs that are stuffed with friends and families of politicians. While your hot as a match google (number of staff for Congress) it’s in the tens of thousands. Appointed too and we haven’t a clue as to their expertise or experience. Wake up America, it only takes a couple of seconds to have it right before your eyes.

mixplix on May 2, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Really, does anyone believe that this wasn’t simply a massive failure on the part of State based on directives and foreign policy guidelines set forth by the White House? And does anyone really believe that this was all internally investigated? By anyone?

The whole thing has been whitewashed and papered over in the hopes that the media wouldn’t pay it any mind after a few short weeks of annoying, but hardly pressing questions.

BKeyser on May 2, 2013 at 5:55 PM

The stench emanating from Foggy Bottom just keeps getting stronger.

We all know what happened. Obama and Clinton gave personal and political agendas priority over the security of Americans serving their country in a dangerous land. Their malfeasance resulted in disaster. Terrified the consequences would include losing the election, they decided to pretend the attack wasn’t that significant. Just a little demonstration that got a little out of hand, you know? They wouldn’t order a rescue effort because doing so would have raised the profile of the event, hoping they would get away with it. They abandoned Americans under attack. They abandoned their watch. Obama went to bed.

Four Americans died waiting for help that would never come because the order to send it was never given.

Ever since Obama and Clinton have been desperately lying, stonewalling, threatening witnesses and obstructing any meaningful investigation. They failed to go after the parties responsible for the deaths of four Americans because they won’t do anything that focuses any attention on the attack. They know if the truth about Benghazi becomes widely known and understood their reputations are tarnished forever, and Hillary can forget her presidential aspirations.

In Obama and Clinton’s effort to suppress the truth about Benghazi into “long-ago” irrelevancy the media are willing accomplices. But it looks like enough Americans just won’t forget that four Americans died. Our duty to their memories and their families is to make certain the truth comes out and the responsible parties are held accountable.

good stuff. I go back to what was happening at the time. Recall during August there was a lot of talk coming from Morsi about releasing the blind sheik. I look at that and the timing and still think had there been no resistence there likely would have been a lot of hostages that may or may not have included Stevens. Those plums would stew for a month while Obama negotiated their release and also sucked the air out of the campaign. To talk about the economy during such a crisis would be a media feast of showing how cruel and out of touch Romney was while so much was at stake.

Obama would have been able to completely scotch the election and be the hero in late October when he brought the hostages home while claiming the ailing blind sheik was not worth keeping with all those American lives on the line.

But, as Peggy Lee said,…if we wait a day or two (then it becomes OLD NEWS) the rain and pain will go away and who needs to talk about Benghazi on such a sunny day….Actually this rope-dope strategy has always worked—stall, obfuscate, spin, change the subject until an increasingly uniformed, dependent public grows weary of the subject and turns its anger toward the investigators.”Let’s move on to the next disaster.”

Thanks, but this looks like the failure of the real world to conform to the political narrative. These people are used to the idea that the narrative is the reality for practical purposes. For crass parochial politics, it is all too true.

The problem comes when these tools try to take that bush league BS out of the controllable media bubble and into the real world. Some of those poor, misunderstood and oppressed third world types just won’t cooperate. Sh!t happens.

The narrative was that Obama had defeated al Qaeda and won the war on terror. The narrative was the Libya intervention was a victory and proof of the brilliance of “leading from behind”. The reality was that al Qaeda was alive and kicking, and the Libya intervention replaced a brutal dictator who had been essentially neutered with a mob of brutal Islamist supremacists and terrorists.

It blew up in their faces, and took American lives with it. First they lied to conceal the truth long enough to get by the election. Now they are lying to save their political futures and legacies.

BHO / Val Jarrett / H. Clinton / D. Patraeus / Sen. McCain / Sen. Graham / Sen. Feinstein/ John Boehner / Eric Cantor / Nancy Pelosi / Harry Reid and any others on select committees. Both sides are so deep in the muck on this and any covert crap that was going on, I expect only kabuki. I am sure I am missing some but you get the jist.

Despite the Benghazi attack, our government is supplying weapons to AQ sympathizers, if not actual members, in Syria.

What the hell is going on?

The IG’s office is said by well-placed sources to be seeking to determine whether the Accountability Review Board, or ARB — led by former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen — failed to interview key witnesses who had asked to provide their accounts of the Benghazi attacks to the panel.

The man who led the ARB investigation, if it can be called that, was handpicked by Clinton. Thomas Pickering is a member of the advisory board of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) – left-leaning according to Judicial Watch – that opposes the imposition of economic sanctions against Iran and that, in the estimation of national security expert Kenneth Timmerman, “has been lobbying Congress to win support for an agenda that mirrors the goals of the Tehran regime.” In 2009, former FI counterterrorism agent Kenneth Piernick reported that the group “may be lobbying on behalf of Iranian government interests.

In her 2009 paper ‘Rise of the Iran Lobby’, published by the Center for Security Policy, former CIA officer Clare Lopez wrote that “Ambassador Pickering’s positions on Iran include calls for bilateral talks without preconditions and a plan for a multinational uranium enrichment consortium in Iran.

The man who was in charge of the investigation into Benghazi, could possibly be sympathetic to the Islamic interests of a rogue nation.

Ben who? Ben Gazzy? Yeah, yeah, I think I’ve heard of him. Wasn’t he one of the judges in the first season of American Idol?

At least charge her with fraud …in the mal-performance of her job.

Take her pension.

And put her in jail for 4 years- for criminal negligence- at least.

One for each death in Benghazi.

We’ll never know the real story on the heap of lies from the State Dept. until after 2016 when all the books are written and people are allowed to talk without joining the 130 at room temperature from the Clinton years.

It’s time for Congress and this arrogant administration to listen to the constituents, not push polls or special-interest groups.

Scott Rasmussen has a good commentary about why Americans are skeptical about the political class and how most in the nation prefer real choice making, not top-down government.

It’s time to put an end to the tyranny of the “Greens” whose “science” is a muddle of emotionalism and selectively self-serving data that has been refuted.

The alternative-energy scams have enriched Obysmal’s cronies and bankrupted the nation. Enough already!

What is the point of antagonizing our good neighbor to the north?

The comments above do not relate to the Keystone Pipeline. Am I having problems posting on this thread?
