Are the Boston bombings changing people’s minds about immigration reform?

posted at 4:41 pm on May 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

Chris Stirewalt argues yes, and not without reason. Before we get to that, though, I want to flag this WaPo story about Obama leaning on liberals privately to take half a loaf on immigration in the name of getting something passed. Since the beginning of the Gang of Eight’s big push, there’s been a theory kicking around — occasionally advanced by no less a tea-party hero than Ted Cruz — that O secretly wants the bill to tank so that he can use its failure to demagogue the GOP as anti-Latino in the 2014 midterms. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The latest proof:

In a private meeting with a dozen Latino leaders at the White House this week, Obama emphasized that securing a large margin in the Senate is crucial to putting pressure on House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) to accept the general framework of the legislation.

The president made clear that he expected the people in the room to support the Senate proposal even if they had doubts about some details, participants said. Once an overarching plan was locked in place by Congress, Obama told the group, the administration would be able to revisit some of their concerns and figure out ways to improve it.

“He said, ‘If the bill were presented on my desk today, I would sign it,’ ” said Janet Murguía, president of the National Council of La Raza, who attended the meeting. “He looked at the advocates and said, ‘We’re not going to get everything we want in this.’ ”

Of course he would sign it. In most important respects, it’s indistinguishable from his own bill. The reason the Obama “sabotage” theory bugs me so much is because it inadvertently helps McCain and Rubio et al. to sell the bill to the right. If O’s privately against the bill, well, then passing it would surely be some sort of conservative victory, right? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Obama wants this done, partly for “legacy” reasons (it may well be the only major domestic accomplishment of his second term) and partly because it’s a golden opportunity to have the GOP share responsibility for amnestizing millions of would-be Democratic voters. He’d be nuts not to seize the chance to do it now, especially since (a) there’s almost no reason to think Latinos won’t vote solidly Democratic next year anyway and (b) he has lots of other political bludgeons to use against the GOP, from gay marriage to background checks to the minimum wage to some of the quasi-hawkish provisions in the Gang of Eight’s own bill. He doesn’t need it to fail. He can have his cake and eat it too. If you don’t believe me, take it from amnesty fan John McCain: Obama wants this thing to pass. And if that means he has to twist liberals’ arms to concede a few things, he’ll do it.

As for the effect of the bombings, Quinnipiac’s new numbers sure are interesting:

quin2

Twenty-three percent of those polled said the terror in Boston has changed their minds about a path to citizenship, and as Stirewalt notes, that was before the news yesterday about Tsarnaev’s after-the-fact accomplices also being here illegally. The Times sees a trend too:

imm

Nothing dramatic there — fully 83 percent still say they support a path to citizenship in principle — but it might be the first stirrings of a growing backlash. McCain is sufficiently nervous about the impact of the bombings on immigration reform that he called yesterday on Fox for limiting visas to immigrants from countries where there’s been “significant influence of radical Islamic extremism.” (Our friends the Saudis will like that.) Rubio has sounded more bearish lately too, telling Sean Hannity yesterday that it’ll be a “struggle” to get the bill through the Senate at this point. Is that because of the bombings, though, or because conservatives have finally started to mobilize, with Jeff Sessions claiming that the “tide is beginning to turn”? Here’s a brutal graphic via Jim Geraghty from the Heritage Foundation, now currently led by Rubio friend/mentor Jim DeMint:

her

The longer this drags on, the more of that you’ll see on the right. That’s why Democrats are so eager to rush the bill through committee.

Courtesy of Mickey Kaus, here’s a sneak preview of the next line of attack on the bill. The “magnet effect” is apparently already happening.

Obama hates white people, Western culture, Christianity, and capitalism. He wants to import millions of illiterate, poor, brown people to eliminate the objects of his hate. He wants his legacy to be as the guy who killed the USA.

Yeah, this is a big deal. If amnesty opponents have the guts, they can easily ask “So you’re for legalizing these guys?” to amnesty shills on the TV networks and even in Congress to rapidly drum up opposition. That will probably kill the bill pretty quickly. The more the public learns about this bill, the less it likes it.

I think the point about Obama wanting this bill passed to burnish his ‘legacy’ is a legitimate one.

Obama, when addressing his supporters, essentially said ‘Just pass it, we’ll change everything we don’t like later.’

Don’t like the idea of tight border security? No problem. We’ll change it later.

Not enough concessions for your particular special interest group? Don’t worry. We’ll change it later.

I’m grateful for Jeff Sessions and the others who are aligning to fight this egregious bill with its 400 exceptions, exemptions, and waivers, that allows illegal aliens, half of whom don’t have a high school diploma, to qualify for welfare immediately, and will place a crushing burden on Medicare and Social Security, which are already broke, and leave our border unfenced, unsecured, and unenforced.

thatsafactjack on May 2, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Are the Boston bombings changing people’s minds about immigration reform?

Not really. Giving amnesty to illegals has never been a popular stance – even aside from the fact that it’s an anti-American, un-Constitutional one. Going beyond that to legalize the illegals has been less popular, as Shrillary and Spitzer found out when she endorsed Spitzer’s licenses for illegals during a dem primary debate and saw her hopes for the candidacy dry up and disappear immediately following and when Spitzer saw his approval ratings go from 70%+ to less than 40% … all before any of the Client #9 stuff broke.

On the other side, the push for illegals is what pretty much killed the GOP in 2006/2008 and brought the disaster of Barky the Indonesian Dog-Eating, America-Hating Imbecile to us.

I just want a national divorce so that actual Americans can start anew and leave the lunatic leftists and their useful idiots in the GOP in the American Socialist Superstate hell they belong.

He wants those Dem voters badly. The Dems can’t keep cheating, having folks vote 6 times, excluding R poll watchers and judges forever, especially now that folks know what to look for. The light has been shone and the cockroaches are scattering. So how does he secure an almost one-party system here in the USA for the next century? Why import it, of course. What is so maddening is these very lowinfovos who voted for Obama because “he looks like them” are too dumb to realize that they will be the hardest hit when these 30 million (not 11) take their jobs. Lord, please have the scales fall from these lowinfovos eyes before we are a destroyed country.

Wrong as usual .
The right thing to do is to investigate each and every university and professor that has ever applied to sponsor student visas and audit that messed up system that brings jihadies into the US , puts them on taxpayer dole while these moozies don’t even attend classes and instead get married to American citizen women and plan and carry out jihad while the universities shield their records from the taxpayers .
Anyone in the university and State department who has been even remotely aiding and abetting jihadies for whatever reason should be named, shamed and fired.
That will fix some of the problems.

Thanks to the Boston Bombings there has been a real change in how the people I know view immigration issues.
(I work at a high school. Not exactly wingnut central.)

A. People were shocked to suddenly realize that all immigrants are not Latinos who come across the southern border looking for a better life for their innocent children.

B. People were shocked to suddenly find out that you can get welfare benefits if you are an immigrant since supposedly that is why they needed to be legalized because the poor dears were starving in the streets.

C. People were shocked to suddenly find out that even though we have taken in refugees of “no particular religious bent” who seek asylum and give them money and a place to live, some of them still want to kill us… for reasons that defy explanation to the powers that be. And those asylum seekers can travel back and forth to places they claimed were dangerous to them with no problem.

D. People are shocked and REALLY outraged that the FBI, CIA, and DHS are seemingly letting anyone and everyone come here, don’t adequately follow people we have been warned repeatedly about and who tell us the system is working when it clearly is not and couldn’t find a clue to who is dangerous or not if someone Pinged them with a ball-peen hammer.

E. And these people are shocked to realize they no longer think that the government actually has any idea about how to keep us safe or run the immigration program we have now.

Because the narrative he learned was that White Christians of Western Culture exploited those poor brown and black people, getting wealthy personally and nationally on their labor and theft of their natural resources from which the brown and black people should have directly benefited.

Its payback time. Take from the exploiters and give to the exploited.

We are all supposed to receive health care via single payer government proviso.

Depressing wages across the board in U.S. by bring in upwards of thirty million aliens and ensuring a Democratic voter majority is a great start. And the Republican politicians are dumb enough, and corrupt enough, to be lured in by the depressed wages.

A Fox news poll just out states that people are not any less supportive of immigration reform…in fact the last numbers they had were 78% in support…by and large most people are smart enough to realize that immigration reform will not make these kinds of attacks more likely, if anything it might make them less likely. After all, the status quo is obviously not working.

In Boston there were immigrants who were working in the hospitals, one of them was an Israeli surgeon in fact. The man whose car was hijacked and who escaped the clutches of the terrorists was also an immigrant. The man wearing the cowboy hat we saw in so many of the pictures was an immigrant from Costa Rica whose son died in Iraq.

The truth is that hardliners sided with Obama back in 2007 when he put poison pills in that immigration bill and killed immigration reform. If they refuse to even try and support a bill now, if they insist on being paranoid and making the bill sound like some evil plot or something they will not hurt Obama. He will just use it against them in 2014. As usual they will only hurt their own side.

Today’s the 2 year anniversary of Dear Leader’s bare-handed strangulation of bin Laden. After that happened, the Associated Press had to sample almost twice as many Democrats as Republicans to achieve a “poll” that showed O’bama got a 5 point Job Approval Bump from that epic event. Contrast that to the 35 point Job Approval Bump that Chimpy Bush got in 4 days after the first 9/11.

Today, Boston Radio Station WBZ (a C-BS affiliate) has been running an (unscientific) online poll, but the results are startling, considering that 79% of Bostonians voted for Dear Leader in 2012.

Do you feel safer today than you did two years ago?

So far, 19% say they feel safer now that they did before O’bama got bin Laden.

But 80% say they fell less safe now that 2 years ago.

hawkeye54 on May 2, 2013 at 6:55 PM

I’m going to point out … for those who seem to forget… there is a distinction between an immigrant.. and an illegal alien.

An immigrant is a person who applies to admission to a country other than the one they are lawfully living in, submits to background checks, physical examination, familiarizes themselves with the laws and customs of the country they are apply to for admission, proves they will not become a public charge ( a burden to the citizens of the proposed host nation) learns the language of the proposed host nation at least well enough to function, and meets a number of other criteria for admission, and waits to be lawfully approved for admission. OR, an immigrant is a person who has been granted asylum in this nation, or refugee status.

An illegal alien is a person who willfully shatters the immigration laws of a nation they’ve chosen to enter. They generally do so in order to fulfill their own personal goals, with no regard for the laws or customs of the nation they’ve chosen, or the rights of the citizens and legal immigrants of that nation.

Most people have no problem at all with legal immigrants and they are welcomed into the nation.

It is the illegal alien, the opportunist who chooses to disregard he rule of law, seeking rather to take what they will and demonstrating a disdain for the rights of the citizens and legal immigrants of the nation, with whom people have a genuine problem.

thatsafactjack on May 2, 2013 at 6:58 PM

Perfectly stated, to teach the distinction.

The politicians say that there is no such thing as illegal immigrants getting welfare or free housing…but Auntie Zetuni snuck into Boston housing and was living there for years on welfare, and no one knew her nephew was the president. But they tell you it is an anecdote, like welfare recipients driving nice cars to their section 8 housing. BMW’s; Mercedes; Poerche. All anecdotal. It doesn’t really happen. Today’s news out of UMASS Dartmouth was that JoCar owes UMASS $20K and he was still going to classes. They tell you you cannot register if you have a balance due. How can this be????

It seems that everything the CRAZY talkers say is true! Immigrants are on medicaid, they are costing our society billions and they are a crime problem that the current administration won’t take care of. And they drive a better car than you because they use phoney licence plates and don’t pay their insurance bill, and that is the so called legal immigrants. When they are arrested they act like they don’t understand English. When they are let go, they don’t show up for court.

I bet there are people in CA that can write these stories too, but this is what it is like in MA.
