Houston schools cancel NRA safety program after discovering NRA connection?

posted at 1:22 pm on May 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

That darned NRA — hiding its involvement in gun-safety programs! The Houston Chronicle reports that two schools in the city were shocked, shocked to discover that Eddie Eagle’s child-oriented firearms safety presentation were backed by the NRA, and canceled the program after the NRA had issued a press release noting the presentation:

An elementary school and a preschool in Houston ISD have canceled gun-safety presentations for their young students over concerns that the National Rifle Association crafted the lessons.

A spokesman for the Houston Independent School District said Tuesday that the principals of Peck Elementary and the Martin Luther King Early Childhood Center did not know the NRA was behind the program.

“The principals made a decision they didn’t want to participate in an event that folks could perceive as them taking a position one way or another on the gun control debate or any other debate the NRA is involved in,” HISD spokesman Jason Spencer said.

The NRA sent out a news release touting its safety presentations at the two schools, which were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, in advance of the gun group’s annual meeting in Houston.

So did the NRA deviously hide its sponsorship of Eddie Eagle in order to sandbag Peck and MLKECC?  If so, then they’re even more devious than anyone thinks.  KTRH in Houston has the audio from a broadcast yesterday in which Peck principal Carlotta Brown appeared on air with an NRA spokesman to express her delight in presenting the program to her students:

When the visit was scheduled, Peck Principal Carlotta Brown told Houston’s Morning News she was excited to have the program talk to the kids.

“We are so elated to have the program in our school,” Brown told KTRH’s Matt Patrick Tuesday on Houston’s Morning News during a discussion with Matt and and NRA Community Outreach Program representative Eric Lipp.

In fact, Patrick explicitly asked her whether the NRA’s involvement was causing her any problems:

Brown was asked by Houston’s Morning News if she was taking heat for inviting the NRA in the first place.

“That’s not been the case in my school. It’s very important that we enlighten the school,” Brown said.

She might have been happy then but a few hours later the school cancelled the visit. An HISD spokesman said the school didn’t know Eddie Eagle was connected to the NRA. Ray Hunt of the Houston Police Officer’s Union told Patrick Brown’s not telling the truth.

“It was clear she knew who was putting it on and she was elated with it. Somebody got in touch with her, I believe, and told her she wasn’t going to do it because it was connected with the NRA,” Hunt said.

It’s also clear that the public school district is being dishonest about the reason for the cancellation.  The NRA’s Eddie Eagle program isn’t designed to sell guns, it’s designed to promote awareness and safety for children if they are around guns.   It is an example of responsible stewardship by the NRA, and canceling the program does nothing but keep children ignorant of how to act safely.

Is that the core business of public schools — keeping children ignorant?

The program, according to the NRA, typically involves its Eddie the Eagle mascot in costume, delivering this message to kids who may come across guns: “Stop! Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.”

What a horrible message for kids..//

This is totally political. The NRA through it’s Eddie the Eagle program promotes gun safety among children. My daughter had it in her school last year and she learned some basic safety knowledge in the off chance she comes across a gun. She enjoyed it.

With everyone demanding gun safety, why not have the program? This is so frustrating.

Evidently, Liberals are so anti-gun that they need to promote unsafe gun ownership. How can you convince people to give up their gun rights if there aren’t accidental injuries and deaths they can blame on guns?

They might even do the same about criminal misuse, deliberately placing guns in the hands of criminals to exacerbate gun crime.

Nah, not even Liberals would do something like that.

Is that the core business of public schools — keeping children ignorant?

Several comments above say yes but not me. Rather than be ignorant of knowledge, public schools seek to make children know many things that are not true. The usual word for this is propaganda.

Fenris on May 1, 2013 at 1:39 PM

If your messaging says that the NRA wants children to die, a gun safety program for children is damned inconvenient.

applebutter on May 1, 2013 at 1:40 PM

Now, if we followed the example of the sex-ed crowd–you know, since kids are gonna do it anyway–we should not only be telling kids about guns, but teaching them how to load, aim, fire, double tap, field strip and clean, AND properly dismember and hide the body!

Eddie the Eagle is actually the equivalent of what sex-ed should be–basic scientific knowledge and ABSTINENCE!

Works every time it’s tried.

Do you really feel the need to parade your ignorance in front of smart people so badly? It’s almost sub-intellectual exhibitionism that you and your other cohorts exhibit.

You strangely don’t bring up the fact that having Planned Parenthood come on campus is even more opportunistic for that organization. The PP VP who became a Christian years ago related how she would go into schools, make her presentation, then have heart to hearts with those students who would come to her. She said she was happy to play, the “I know your parents are old fuddy-duddies, come down to the clinic and we’ll hook you up with birth control pills”. She did that because she said PP knew that the failure rate of the pill would guarantee a certain percentage of abortion customers. Yeah, that was purely avarice on the part of PP, the NRA? Not so much. Well, in your mind, because it might remove some of the stigma and fear of firearms when the children actually become educated on them. .. and we can’t have that, right? The NRA is the Demlib/MSM boogieman of the century and nothing may be allowed to upset that narrative, even if loyal foot soldiers have to take a steaming bite of the shit sammich.

I’m all for Communists being unarmed.

That is fair, equitable, reasonable and sensible gun control … and I fully support it.

Ignorance all the way through adulthood. To the Left in leadership, ignorance truly is bliss.

hawkeye54 on May 1, 2013 at 2:28 PM

.
It MUCH worse than that ….. our kids are being deliberately “dumbed-down”, and made to be non-self-sufficient for the expressed purpose of weakening the U.S.

The (expletive) communists are really getting us from the inside, through the Public School.

listens2glenn on May 1, 2013 at 2:38 PM

liberals……. a synonym for ignorance, bigotry, censorship, racism, prejudice and unadulterated stupidity.

ultracon on May 1, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Whoah, whoah, whoah, there! Who says liberals are against adultery?!? /s

I’m attending the convention as a citizen journalist and have offered my friends and colleagues free photos with Eddie Eagle while I’m there and in proximity to him. HISD is a joke. It’s been caught lying about student enrollment, has handed out multi-thousand dollar bonuses while every few years asking the public to vote yes on another bond issue claiming it needs the money, and now this.

It’s just my way of sticking it to this liberal city.

Know what your biggest biggest problem is, the problem all your kind have?

You have never been one of us. You don’t grasp Conservatism beyond your propaganda and other ignorance.

Many of us, on the other hand, used to be liberal to varying degrees. We know what liberalism is, by personal experience. And we each ultimately rejected it, for personal reasons as varied as the posters here.

You speak from arrogant pomposity borne of ignorance, while we speak of experience.

That you presume to come here and lecture us tells more about you and your kind than it speaks to, of, or about us.

The (expletive) communists are really getting us from the inside, through the Public School.

We were too strong militarily and culturally for them to succeed from an outside attack without serious losses on their part. They knew that from the inside would be the best way to take us down.

They’ve done well planting the seeds of our destruction to grow and spread in levels of influence throughout our institutes of government, education, religion, media, business, entertainment.

Who better than the NRA to teach gun safety???

Oh. I forgot. We have Biden & Clinton.

We can always count on verbaldouche to prove how stupid libtards are, and, prove the point that they WANT bad things to happen to help along their cause.

Also, children being safer around guns, and understanding what to do when they come across one does not help with the agenda. Children accidentally killed by guns, however, does serve their purpose. They need a few eggs broken to make that omelet.

iurockhead on May 1, 2013 at 1:54 PM

It only took 16 minutes for verbaldouche to jump and prove iurockhead absolutely correct.

dentarthurdent on May 1, 2013 at 2:52 PM

I think what the libs fear most is that all their fearmongering and scare tactics regarding guns will be outed as nothing more than a projection of ignorance. And their willing to sacrifice children so they can continue the “see, told ya so ” argument.

The gun-safety replacement will be Stupid Joe, complete with 12 gauge shotgun – who will proceed to blast a couple of rounds over the heads of the tots.

Is it your argument that by making sure we keep kids ignorant, we promote gun control?

Vanceone on May 1, 2013 at 2:20 PM

No, no. It’s his argument that the only people allowed to teach gun safety to kids should be people who are actively hostile to gun rights and are scared of guns. After all, who better to teach sex ed than Shakers, right?

GWB on May 1, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Is that the core business of public schools — keeping children ignorant?

It seems to be the core business of Education Colleges, churning out a product that’s often dumber than the kids they “teach.”
