Houston schools cancel NRA safety program after discovering NRA connection?

posted at 1:22 pm on May 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

That darned NRA — hiding its involvement in gun-safety programs! The Houston Chronicle reports that two schools in the city were shocked, shocked to discover that Eddie Eagle’s child-oriented firearms safety presentation were backed by the NRA, and canceled the program after the NRA had issued a press release noting the presentation:

An elementary school and a preschool in Houston ISD have canceled gun-safety presentations for their young students over concerns that the National Rifle Association crafted the lessons.

A spokesman for the Houston Independent School District said Tuesday that the principals of Peck Elementary and the Martin Luther King Early Childhood Center did not know the NRA was behind the program.

“The principals made a decision they didn’t want to participate in an event that folks could perceive as them taking a position one way or another on the gun control debate or any other debate the NRA is involved in,” HISD spokesman Jason Spencer said.

The NRA sent out a news release touting its safety presentations at the two schools, which were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, in advance of the gun group’s annual meeting in Houston.

So did the NRA deviously hide its sponsorship of Eddie Eagle in order to sandbag Peck and MLKECC?  If so, then they’re even more devious than anyone thinks.  KTRH in Houston has the audio from a broadcast yesterday in which Peck principal Carlotta Brown appeared on air with an NRA spokesman to express her delight in presenting the program to her students:

When the visit was scheduled, Peck Principal Carlotta Brown told Houston’s Morning News she was excited to have the program talk to the kids.

“We are so elated to have the program in our school,” Brown told KTRH’s Matt Patrick Tuesday on Houston’s Morning News during a discussion with Matt and and NRA Community Outreach Program representative Eric Lipp.

In fact, Patrick explicitly asked her whether the NRA’s involvement was causing her any problems:

Brown was asked by Houston’s Morning News if she was taking heat for inviting the NRA in the first place.

“That’s not been the case in my school. It’s very important that we enlighten the school,” Brown said.

She might have been happy then but a few hours later the school cancelled the visit. An HISD spokesman said the school didn’t know Eddie Eagle was connected to the NRA. Ray Hunt of the Houston Police Officer’s Union told Patrick Brown’s not telling the truth.

“It was clear she knew who was putting it on and she was elated with it. Somebody got in touch with her, I believe, and told her she wasn’t going to do it because it was connected with the NRA,” Hunt said.

It’s also clear that the public school district is being dishonest about the reason for the cancellation.  The NRA’s Eddie Eagle program isn’t designed to sell guns, it’s designed to promote awareness and safety for children if they are around guns.   It is an example of responsible stewardship by the NRA, and canceling the program does nothing but keep children ignorant of how to act safely.

Is that the core business of public schools — keeping children ignorant?

Funny how the actual GOVERNMENT sees it differently than the libtards (i.e. verbaldouche):
From the El Paso County CO Sheriff’s web site:

To apply for a concealed handgun permit, you will need to bring the following to your scheduled appointment:

Colorado drivers license or state ID
a completed unsigned application
your original certificate of firearms training issued within the last ten years (acceptable firearms training includes: NRA, Hunter’s Safety, proof of organized shooting competitions, DD2-14, Active Duty Orders)

And BTW – the hunter safety courses are taught by NRA certified instructors, and many if not most shooting competitions are NRA sponsored events.
For the civilian world “NRA certified” is practically mandatory for any legitimate gun safety / handling course and instructor.

No, it’s worse than that. They aren’t just keeping the children ignorant, they are actively misinforming them.

The core business of public schools is to indoctrinate impressionable young minds with progressive pap. That includes brainwashing them to believe guns are evil. It does not include basic safety instruction like “Stop! Don’t touch! Leave the room and tell an adult.”

It has nothing to do with whether you’re a ‘conservative’ or not.
You view everything through an ideological lens…frozen in 1776.
So words like practical, modern, progressive, common sense…these concepts and realities are rejected in many of the arguments you make.
You define ‘conservative’ as being opposed to any single restriction and/or regulation with respect to the possession and use of firearms.
I know plenty of conservatives who don’t share that view.
(Along with 90% of Americans.)
But I know your answer to that…they’re not ‘real’ conservatives.
I don’t hear that whine as much from those who define themselves as ‘liberal’ – but if they run around on blogs etc. shouting LINO! at reps, writers, etc., I can assure you I’d be guilty as accused.
Whatever you were before, you just got to a point where you felt you were now a ‘conservative’. And now you’re stuck needing to prove it to yourself and others.
So…no thanks. Never liked dogma.

So just to get this straight:

A white kid wears an NRA t-shirt with a gun logo to school is suspended, Hot Air devotes a front page blog post to it.

A black girl conducts an experiment by mixing household chemicals in a bottle outside, but within the bounds of her school building, is expelled, arrested and charged with a felony as an adult. And HotAir covers not even a *slice* of the story.

http://now.msn.com/science-project-gone-bad-gets-kiera-wilmot-expelled-arrested

This explains, in a nutshell, why “conservatism” as it is currently articulated will remain a whites only movement and will not attract people of color. This student has exemplary grades and a perfect behavior record. She has curiosity and ambition in the sciences and the so-called anti-big government movememt isn’t going to lift a finger to help her cause. Just, do us all a favor and stop pretending that conservatism is about anything more than white racial resentment.

So you’d object to any restrictions or regulations on any ‘inanimate object’? Of course you wouldn’t.
Despite it’s popularity as an angle for the the anti-restrictions crowd…this is an absurd argument.
Is it ‘common sense’ to not give a 3 year old a shotgun?
Is it ‘common sense’ not to sell an armored tank to a tourist?
Ok…now maybe you’re in favor of some restrictions that fall somewhere bwtn those two?

Just, do us all a favor and stop pretending that conservatism is about anything more than white racial resentment.

libfreeordie on May 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM

I don’t agree with that at all.
‘White racial resentment’ may indeed be the fuel that sends some into a declaration of ‘conservatism’ – but there’s nothing innate in it’s philosophies that welcome or endorse such.
But I do think there isn’t a vigorous enough internal struggle in the conservative movement on this issue. Many are too caught up with denying there’s any truth to this – so when it is indeed present, they too defensively throw out a Breitbatian/Malkinite ‘raaaaacccciiiissstttt’ sarc chant. There’s also those who wish to redefine the Civil Rights Movement as hostile to minorities – along with the ‘Robert Byrd was in the KKK once!’ line.
But all that said…I’ve seen many examples where Repubs/cons/Tea Party folks loudly and clearly call out rank racism.
But again…they could use some reflection along with the defensiveness.
I think it was Bill Maher who offered, “it’s ridiculous to say that because someone is a racist they’re a Republican. But if someone is a racist, odds are they are a Republican”.

verbaluce on May 2, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Kiera Wilmot is not the type of kid you expect to be facing felony charges. By most accounts, the 16-year-old from Bartow, Fla., is well-liked by teachers and fellow students. “A good kid,” her principal said. But following an ill-advised “science project gone bad” Monday morning on her high school campus, Wilmot has been expelled. To make matters worse, she was arrested and charged with two felonies. Her alleged crime? Wilmot reportedly mixed several household chemicals in a small plastic water bottle to see what would happen. Unfortunately, the reaction was a small explosion. No one was hurt, but the school district said it had to expel Wilmot for “a serious breach of conduct.”

Yeah, that’s just like a kid wearing a t-shirt and getting arrested on a trumped-up excuse which was later debunked by video of the situation.

Nutstuyu on May 2, 2013 at 11:36 AM

From my read of the story – via FoxNews – this kid should not be labeled as a criminal. I do have some questions though about details that are not being reported. If this she was working on a science experiment, where was the science teacher? Did she get the idea from her science teacher that the mixture would just produce smoke? How many kids have made mini volvanos for science class over the years? How many of those may have had more of an explosion than lava bubbling because the kids didn’t do it right?
On the surface, given the lack of details in the reporting, if anything it looks to me like the school failed in proper supervision and/or education in the science they were teaching the kids – in which case Kiera should not be punished in any way.

And BTW – teaching chemistry class safety for mixing chemicals in bottles not an NRA function or responsibility.

Yeah, that’s just like a kid wearing a t-shirt and getting arrested on a trumped-up excuse which was later debunked by video of the situation.

Agreed – totally different stories and circumstances. No kid should ever be arrested because of the t-shirt he’s wearing.
But in my view, based on the reported details of the Kiera story, I don’t think she should be charged as a criminal either.
