Video: “We’ve forgotten what abortion really is”

posted at 9:21 am on April 30, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Via Kathryn Jean Lopez at The Corner, Lila Rose gets straight to the heart of why the media didn’t want to cover the Gosnell trial — and why they won’t want to cover what happens in other late-term abortion clinics, either.  They don’t want to see the brutality or the inhumanity, and the culture sanitizes the horror of abortion in order to keep public opinion from turning against it.  These films, and the Gosnell trial, strip the façade away

Kirsten Powers concurs.  In her column for USA Today, Powers tells readers that Gosnell is “no aberration,” but the industry norm — helped along by malicious neglect of public officials who are supposed to protect the health of the community:

Abortion rights advocates have asserted that Gosnell was an “extreme outlier” andopposed legislation to increase regulation of Pennsylvania abortion clinics as they have in other states. But how could they possibly know that this is an aberration?

Last week, Ohio officials shut down an abortion clinic after inspectors found that a medical assistant administered narcotics to five patients, that narcotics and powerful sedatives weren’t properly accounted for, that pharmacy licenses had expired and that four staff members hadn’t been screened for a communicable disease.

This month, a Delaware TV station reported that two Planned Parenthood nurses resigned in protest over conditions at a clinic there. One nurse, Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, said, “It was just unsafe. I couldn’t tell you how ridiculously unsafe it was.” …

Last year, an Associated Press investigation found that Illinois hadn’t inspected some abortion clinics for 10 to 15 years. After state health officials reinvigorated their clinic inspections in the wake of Gosnell, inspectors closed two clinics, including one fined for “failure to perform CPR on a patient who died after a procedure,” according to AP.

The Left spent all last year screeching about a “war on women” because some people opposed the idea of forcing employers to foot the bill for contraception. The same people seem awfully silent, in every sense of that term, when it comes to the butchers of the abortion industry and the public officials who won’t lift a finger to put them out of business. That’s because they don’t want people to know what abortion truly is.

Leaving aside the morality issues around abortion, with the possible exception of the mother’s life in danger, I can think of no rational reason for a late-term abortion.

Surely even the pro-murder crowd would admit that killing a child that is viable outside the womb is immoral, right?

Happy Nomad on April 30, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Thomas Harris couldn’t write a character as evil as Kermit Gosnell. And there appear to be Gosnell’s all over the United States, probably in every American city. There are certainly people sympathetic with Gosnell in the White House, even in the Oval Office. This is what Big Abortion is all about.

If the general public were aware of that, it might be decades before the Democratic party could recover. And they’re all too aware of that, as are their lackeys in the MSM.

With a 50% mortality rate, I can see why you would think that.

The local pizza parlor gets inspected more often than the local abortionist. Governors across the country should be scrambling to send inspectors to every women’s health care provider in their state. Their reelection might be at stake.

Kissmygrits on April 30, 2013 at 9:32 AM

Just ask yourself one question, ladies and gentlemen:

Are you for or against infanticide? That’s the only question appropos the Kermit Gosnell situation. Someone the other day walked away from a debate with me right on this website because I made them feel uncomfortable by using the word “infanticide.” If you can’t even defend your position by asserting that what Gosnell did wasn’t infanticide (and I most certainly believe it was), you’ve got issues I can’t help you with.

VA just passed a law that requires abortion mills to be held to the same standards as hospitals or dental offices. Well the stupid single-issue women are howling about that! Imagine going in for a “procedure” and finding a facility that is hygenic and safe! The gals really don’t like that for some reason.

Best of all though, Ken Cuccinelli is out there ahead of Terry McAuliffe in the “war on women” thing ahead of next years race for governor. Ken has an ad out there this morning attacking McAuliffe for speaking out against this law and forcing women to go to unsafe places for their “health” issues. It is a brilliant example of pre-emption.

I wonder if there will ever be the day that Libs wake up and realize they endorse infanticide.

You don’t have to be pro-choice to realize that no woman should be subjected to a “doctor” like Gosnell. It absolutely stuns me that Libs won’t even TRY to make the case that more enforcement and regulation could end this brutality. They believe it about GUNS but not about this? Hardly.

The Gosnell Trial will be a hard turning point in history for America. It will either be the point that the media became all-in part of the government, or that America finally realizes the brutality of abortion.

Judgement Day is gonna be a b1tch.

The pro-murder crowd are like atheists. You can’t find common ground because they are unwilling to accede to the idea that not everyone believes that women carry around a mass of cells up until delivery. They refuse to be honest about viability because the minute you admit that life exists in the womb the “right” to kill that life becomes less defensible.

Either they want it or they don’t. Why are they waiting 4 to 5 months to decide? I don’t get it. Are they that stupid that they don’t even want to know they are pregnant until it’s obvious?

In 2009, 784,507 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 48 reporting areas. The majority of abortions in 2009 took place early in gestation: 91.7% of abortions were performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation, and of the abortions performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation, 69.8% were performed at ≤ 8 weeks’ gestation

Here is what this data reveals about Live Nation, Kirsten Powers and Ed Morrissey’s intellectual dishonesty. Not only are late term abortions less than 9% of abortions conducted each year in this country, Gosnell represents an aberration *within* an aberration. Wanna talk about Benghazi instead? I didn’t think so.

And like it or not, Kermitt Gosnell is the face of abortion right now. Even people who support the ability of bar sluts to kill off the consequences of a drunken one-night-stand should be appalled about the Gosnell story. But remarkably they are more concerned about burying this story than seeing that justice is done.

For years you idiots have tried to claim that the human being growing in the mother’s womb, is not a human being, it’s a clump of cells, or…a fetus…or…a space alien…or a puppy. Antything to try to alleviate your collective (because that is all you are, is a hive mind) guilt over stopping a beating human heart. And yet, you claim to be the most caring and tolerant among us.

gryphon202 on April 30, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Gosnell is no outlier and any woman who has visited one of these “clinics” knows it. Such fallacy is easily dis-proven by very people liberals seek to convince otherwise.

This disingenuity will be the death of their argument and hopefully a despicable movement.

Abortion disproportionately affects the poor and 2/3 of all abortions are performed on non-whites. 50% of all abortions are performed on women under 25. Digest that for a moment and tell me how we are not killing our future?

Whether you think that mistake is an intentional lie or based on ignorance is up to you to decide. This does not mean that Gosnell is not monstrous, nor does it mean he never murdered a born baby, clearly he did. The problem comes when you all try and turn him into a poster child for abortion. Now we see clearly what liars the Left are. All these years, all this time, it’s “just a collection of cells”. Then when events like this Gosnell case happen, and reality cannot be spun or ignored, then they move the goalposts to “well, it’s a life, but it’s a justifiable homicide”. Why? Unless the woman’s life (and not social life) was threatened by the pregnancy, there is no justification. And even then, it’s a lesser of two evils, and not something some should be proud of or want to encourage.

Where was this argument of your years ago? Hidden, because it wouldn’t get you what you wanted – unfettered abortion on demand.

But even if we accept these videos as accurate, that’s two example. There are 3/4 of a million abortions performed in this country a year, which means there must be thousands of abortion providers around the country. You need more than two to make any statistically significant claims about any of them. You are letting your outrage at Gosnell and your general dislike of abortion to cloud your thinking.

How dare you! There’s no such thing as a pedophile–”age of consent” is just someone’s morality being legislated.

Every DAY, another 3,200 babies are killed in America. It is a DAILY story.

slickwillie2001 on April 30, 2013 at 10:06 AM

VA just passed a law that requires abortion mills to be held to the same standards as hospitals or dental offices. Well the stupid single-issue women are howling about that! Imagine going in for a “procedure” and finding a facility that is hygenic and safe! The gals really don’t like that for some reason.

Happy Nomad on April 30, 2013 at 9:37 AM

This is awful news. We should be leveling the playing field and giving all doctors a fair shot.

I say if women are ok with the current standards at the abortion mills, then they should be the same at all medical facilities.

I mean, do the scissors really need to be disinfected after every snip? Same with dental tools. Think of how much cheaper health care would be if everyone adopted the Gosnell hygiene standard

BobMbx on April 30, 2013 at 10:06 AM

There are 3/4 of a million abortions performed 200 million guns in this country a year, which means there must be thousands of abortion providers gun owners around the country. You need more than two [gun crimes] to make any statistically significant claims about any of them. You are letting your outrage at Gosnell the 2nd Amendment and your general dislike of abortion guns to cloud your thinking.

libfreeordie on April 30, 2013 at 9:57 AM

FIFY.

Nutstuyu on April 30, 2013 at 10:06 AM

CDC data also shows that 16.5% of abortions each year are conducted for “medical” reasons. I suspect that a significant chunk of those overlap with the 8.3% which occur after 13 weeks.

libfreeordie on April 30, 2013 at 9:59 AM

This is a deceptive statistic. “Medical” reasons can be anything, including mental health. Want that baby out of your uterus and in a jar somewhere on Gosnell’s desk? Just say you’re depressed about carrying a baby and taking it to full term presents a suicide risk. Medical reasons. Ptooey!

gryphon202 on April 30, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Solution

We had 16 hours to interrogate a mass murderer whom we had on video tape in the act.

He got a lawyer.

We have patient advocates and clergy trying to help patients in hospital.

Why don’t we have advocates for unborn kids in these clinics?

Last night on local news, they were investigating tatoo artists that operate out of their vehicles lamenting on how they never get supervised or have their equipment inspected. In Minnesota, tatoo parlors and veternary clinics are inspected and supervised but the rich prick mark dayton vetoed a bill last year that would have held abortion clinics to the same standards as same day surgery centers…..for all of you moral deficients that are pro death…does that really make sense to you or do you continue burying your head up your backside and staying in the dark…..

crosshugger on April 30, 2013 at 10:07 AM

Nah dude. I am saying that her claim that Gosnell is what abortion “really is” is factually and mathematically incorrect. Whether you think that mistake is an intentional lie or based on ignorance is up to you to decide. This does not mean that Gosnell is not monstrous, nor does it mean he never murdered a born baby, clearly he did. The problem comes when you all try and turn him into a poster child for abortion. When all the data says he’s not even a poster child for late term abortion.

libfreeordie on April 30, 2013 at 9:54 AM

The rest of the industry aided and abetted him. They referred their late-term patients to him, knowing he was “flexible”. They refused to refer him to law enforcement, even when they knew what he was doing. Regulators were told to not inspect due to pressure from people like you. This is what abortion is. You made it this way.

Jeff Weimer on April 30, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Why don’t we have advocates for unborn kids in these clinics?

IlikedAUH2O on April 30, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Because reproductive rights. And because choice. And because ghouls like libfree, thuja, and armin ultimately believe in philosophical utilitarianism over basic intrinsic human dignity.

gryphon202 on April 30, 2013 at 10:08 AM

22044 on April 30, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Any Liberal who attempts to carrect someone about “intellectual dishonty” is nothing but a pitiful joke. And yet, you claim to be the most caring and tolerant among us.

kingsjester on April 30, 2013 at 9:50 AM

What you write is not pro-choice or pro-abortion say. It is rather about your not listening to others and just putting words in their mouths from the pro-life script. Only idiots say a fetus is not a genetically unique member of the biological species Homo sapien. (Quibbling over identical twins is tiresome and silly, though I am sure someone will take the bait.) What we say is that the fetuses doesn’t have the qualities of personhood such as consideration of the self as an ongoing project required to be a human being.

So you would have no problem if they were investigated, and regulated then? I mean, just to make sure? Women’s lives are on the line, and we can’t have such a War on Women going on unaddressed.

It wasn’t just the acts of Gosnell that cause alarm – it’s the mindset that defends or ignores it, trying to downplay it as no big deal, nothing to see here, move along. People like YOU. People that can’t wait to bring witch-hunts against those they disagree with (like gun owners), but want their own “sins” white-washed and downplayed without fuss, even if it reveals them for the hypocrites they are. THAT ALONE is ample reason to start investigating the others.

Hey, one lone nut shoots people, and the whole legal populace that owns firearms is slandered as psycho gunmen and pushed toward further federal registration and background checks. On an enumerated constitutional right. But one found only in “penumbras and emanations” is off limits? Sorry, but what’s good for the goose…

Neither does a three month old baby. Shit, I don’t remember a second of my life before about the age of two! So are you okay with infanticide? If you can kill a baby an hour before its born, what’s wrong with killing it an hour afterward? Just say it, Thuja. “I’m a philosophical utilitarian, and I am okay with ‘post-birth abortion.’” Such an admission will not only be wonderfully liberating, but the rest of us won’t have to speculate about your motivations anymore.

It’s called utilitarianism, Bob. Defining the value of a life not by intrinsic human dignity, but by the value that life has to others. Bone chilling, if you ask me, that such a philosophy should define public policy. But here you go.

gryphon202 on April 30, 2013 at 10:15 AM

Abortion clinics are always unsafe…for the babies.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 30, 2013 at 10:16 AM

Surely even the pro-murder crowd would admit that killing a child that is viable outside the womb is immoral, right?

Happy Nomad on April 30, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Would not admit it no. They do realize it but I believe they fear how it makes them look, fear being wrong and fear that admission of the brutality of these procedures will lead to banning of procedures they honestly do not feel are immoral.

Fenris on April 30, 2013 at 10:10 AM

I didn’t put it in scare quotes, I was pasting from the CDC website. Here is the only way I support a ban on post 13 week abortions:

1. All natal care is paid for by the state in top of the line facilities.
2. Adoption agencies with proven track records of care and sympathy towards mothers are on hand to facilitate an adoption.
3. Federal law is passed requiring all employers to provide 10 months of paid maternity leave and banning employers from firing new mothers once they return for at least 6 months.
4. Federal law is passed increasing support for early childhood education in impoverished communities.

Then post 13 week abortions can be banned.

libfreeordie on April 30, 2013 at 10:18 AM

Abortionists and their supporters are “age-ists”.
The murdered babies are merely too young to defend themselves.

No question that Gosnell is a monster, and no doubt that the lamestream media covered up his case to avoid what’s happening now: The use of his terrible case as a cause celebre against legal abortion. Gosnell, however, does not make the case that abortion ought to be a criminal act.
