Dem Rep. Maloney: Background check would have stopped the Boston bomber

posted at 4:01 pm on April 29, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney, for one, is not giving up on the quest for more gun control measures, and is convinced that further gun legislation “will pass eventually” — but she drew a few rather dubious conclusions in the process.

As it stands right now, Tamerlan, as we know now, was on the terrorist watch list, so we know a gun check would stop him. If there was a background check, as it stands now, Tamerlan… or the next terrorist, can go to any gun show, and buy a hundred-round magazine. They can buy all the assault weapons they want, no questions asked. The gun lobby has the upper hand now, even though 90 percent of Americans want gun safety. This in no way infringes on the right of law-abiding Americans… but for the terrorist, for the bad guys, let’s pass sensible gun-safety legislation.

Er, “we know a gun check would stop him,” really? That’s quite the conclusion to draw, considering that A) the most recent update from ABC reports the only gun recovered so far from the scene of the Tsarnaev brothers’ shootout was a semiautomatic handgun with its serial number scratched off, suggesting that it was probably purchased through illicit means that wouldn’t have subjected to a background check no matter what; and B) the brothers somehow neglected to register for gun permits as required in Massachusetts, suggesting that they were pretty unconcerned with the law — as also evidenced by their blowing up a busy street with pressure-cooker bombs. (Not to mention, that “90 percent” figure is getting wildly overused as an indicator of public opinion that isn’t nearly as robust as it makes it out to be.) Lawmakers have been arguing over introducing some stringent coordination between the terror watch list and background checks, but let’s not make it sound like universal background checks would have definitively thwarted the Boston bombing nor are a reliable method for thwarting terrorism in general, shall we?

Blake on April 29, 2013 at 4:05 PM

First of all I would hope they would be nervous after murdering a law enforcement officer in public.

Second, the officer had a specially designed holster that is extremely difficult to open unless you know how. It’s to prevent those without knowledge from disarming him and killing him with his own gun. In this case they killed him first with their gun. Total morons and one of them has, so far, gotten what he deserved.

I’m constantly amazed at how little concern the LEFT shows for being outed as either lying outright, being misinformed, proceeding on the flimsiest of evidence (like the one poll that produced that very dubious 90% figure), or drawing blatantly absurd conclusions.

This woman has no business being a lawmaker if she can’t employ better critical thinking skills than she’s demonstrated here.

However, that being said, Rubio and the Gang of Eight have no business being lawmakers since, in drafting and promoting the egregious piece of immigration legislation they’re trying to foist off on the American people in order to pander to special interest groups, they’ve demonstrated that they have no regard for the rule of law, but also, no understanding of the principle of a nation built upon the foundation of the rule of law ( essentially, a nation of laws that must be enforced equitably without preference or prejudice), or the reality that amnesty breeds future amnesties.

This is just a bullshit liberal lie. If you go to a gun show and don’t want to pass a background check you have to search out a ‘private seller’ in the aisles or in the parking lot that might have something to sell. That transaction could also be done in the NAACP parking lot, or behind your local TGIF. No guarantee you would find for sale what the proggies call an “assault weapon”, let alone “all the assault weapons” you want.

From the Free Beacon ( I always read it as Free Bacon and get hungry):

Law enforcement recovered one 9mm Ruger semi-automatic with an obliterated serial number from the scene of the shootout with the brothers, while younger suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had no guns when taken into custody.

The fact that the serial number was defaced is strong evidence the gun was purchased illegally, where background checks would clearly not apply.

Yeah, background check would have worked.

OT, but really important to Texans:

Head for the hills! Twerpys gotta gun and can now carry it around.

If they want one, maybe. Or two. Because that’s all you’re going to find from non-FFL folks. And, if you buy from the FFL dealers, you’ll – wait for it! – have to pass a background check, even at the gun show! Of course, the statement shows profound ignorance – as if having 30 assault rifles (even in the correct meaning of that term) would be worse than having one or two. Because we all know they’re soooo much easier to carry than a few extra magazines (even if they’re limited in capacity). But, hey, we’re running on pure emotion here, so I’ll cut her a little slack on the stupidity. ……. Nah, she’s an idiot, and it shows. No mercy.

They couldn’t have an original thought if their life depended on it.

Consistently vote the party line and regurgitate party talking points is all that is needed for success. Original thought is unnecessary and may actually hinder your career in politics.

They dont run background checks to buy pressure cookers (yet) and the
gun they had was stolen from the cop. Wasnt it?

Maloney, just another lib who doesn’t let FACTS get in her way.

You want a gun? Go to one of the soup kitchens in town and state “I’ll give a hundred dollars for a gun, no questions asked” and what do you think are the chances you’ll have a gun? I think it would be very good.

The NRA convention is this weekend in Houston. It’s one of the few gun shows I know of where you cannot purchase a firearm. Ms. Maloney, as many have noted, is an idiot. But she knows her audience, and the media.

Guess we’d darn well better close all those soup kitchens.

If it saves the life of just one child…

What a sorry excuse for a human being, let alone something worse which is a liberal politician

Two questions. How do such ignorant people get elected? Why do people elect such ignorant politicians. A triple murder unsolved that begs for links to Islamic extremists. Two Chechen extremists that were outed by the Russians but not acted upon… And the only answer is more gun control. I pity the future generation of the greatest nation ever created on the face of the earth

90 percent of Americans believe that “Progressives” are going to ruin this country by over-taxing, over-legislating, and overbearing attitudes that they (the “progressives”) know better than the rest of the county.

Put that in your statistical sack, you sad, sad, people. It’s just as true as every statistic you leftocrats pull out of who knows where.

Know It All on April 29, 2013 at 7:47 PM

As it stands right now, Tamerlan, as we know now, was on the terrorist watch list, so we know a gun check would stop him. If there was a background check, as it stands now, Tamerlan… or the next terrorist, can go to any gun show, and buy a hundred-round magazine. They can buy all the assault weapons they want, no questions asked

So I guess there was no need to kill the MIT security officer to get his gun. In spite of being on the terrorist watch list, according to this stultus, they could have picked up a gun at any gun show without a check. I suggest the congress she is in pass a law against being stupid and opening your mouth if you are a politician. Better than that, they could have gone downtown and bought a gun from most common minorities for a couple of hits of crack (since one of them was a pusher).

I am becoming a believer that it is not the 2d amendment that is the most dangerous, but the 1st. The 2d will eventually take care of the failures of the 1st.

Old Country Boy on April 29, 2013 at 8:47 PM

So, we’re conducting background checks for pressure cooker purchases now? Huh. Who knew?
