Manchin: We are “absolutely” going to try for another gun-control vote

posted at 5:01 pm on April 28, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

The Senate’s proposed gun-control bill crashed and burned earlier this month, and Majority Leader Harry Reid signaled that he was going to put the issue on the political shelf where it would presumably start to gather dust — but that might not be the case after all. Senator Manchin and Toomey revealed last week that they’re going to keep looking for ways to strengthen Senate support for the measures, and Machin confirmed that he’s optimistc that he can fix their mistakes from the last go-around and introduce a background check-centric, cleaner version of the bill:

Another senator this week also suggested that perhaps Harry Reid’s shelving of gun-control legislation isn’t so indefinite after all, via The Hill:

Although legislation central to President Obama’s effort to reduce gun violence was blocked this month in the upper chamber, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) said this week that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has told House gun control advocates that the legislation will resurface before 2014.

“Reid had already told us [last week] that they were definitely going to bring it back up again,” McCarthy said Friday. “We don’t know when that time will be, but he said before the end of the year.” …

“We do know that a number of senators have been reaching out to our workforce group, and they were going ahead, they’re going to tweak it, they’re going to see, you know, if they can work with some of the other members who voted ‘no,’” McCarthy said.

I would think that, if they’re really going to try this again, they’d definitely want to do it sooner than later so that they have ample time to cleanse voters’ palates before the midterms next November — but convincing the four Democratic senators who voted against the measure as well as finding one more Republican to go along with it still seems like a long shot.

“Gun control” is the biggest distraction the Democrats and the MSM have left to play.

They are desperate to drown out ANY discussion of the economy and Obamacare.

They don’t believe they will have any more success this time than last time – they HAVE to keep the people stirred up on the straw man of gun control because the truth regarding the economy, the banks and Obamacare will DESTROY them if they do not.

Of course, this is the same party that told us we had to pass Obamacare to find out what was in it, and that it would lower the cost of health care, be deficit neutral, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, improve the accessibility and quality of health care, and not cover health care for illegal aliens.

Forgive us for not believing a damn word coming out of your mouth, Senator Manchin.

What the Hell is wrong with West Virginia voters? I live in a Blue State and I know the vast majority who vote there are liberal retards with half a shitz hanging out their brain dead azzes.

West Virginia better wake up and send this F’n Tard back to his Mommy’s tittie. Manchin is a Boil of infection of the azz of common sense and this boy needs to be retired before his retard really gets kicking.

His background checks would do nothing to stop criminals or Mental cases from hurting others. Armed Citizens will stop them, just get out of the way and let them protect themselves and maybe, and I mean maybe, even the retard liberals, shitz out of their azz and all.

The intelligence is very limited with the politicians as far as gun control. Many use the verbs and nouns of gun talk yet haven’t a clue of the meaning they have. The BS gets very deep and they wonder why we ignore their ranting. Could it be that the Congress has thousands of staff that they themselves appointed?

Against what are these checks to be performed?

They can clean this bill up with thousands of bottles of Mr. Clean, if they wish, but does not change the fact that they just do not understand “shall not be infringed.”

Can’t even figure out when people on the terrorism watch list are coming or going, where they reside, what they are up to…and they actually believe they are going to build a foolproof background check system that will not violate anybody’s privacy, or be used for other than a spot check to see if that person may or may not purchase a weapon…based on a rubric of which they have no idea…and will not be a federal database…?

There are bigger threats to American citizens.

Guns isn’t one of them.

coldwarrior on April 28, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Yep. These are the pseudo Americans that want to vet and investigate American citizens buying gun as a Second Amendment right, but want to allow aliens, legal and illegal, into the country unveted. They are more wedded to their marxist/socialist agenda than to their country. Gun control is kabuki theater. As long as people can go in and buy guns and ammo from a million different gun shops, there will be tens of millions of guns in circulation. None of these measures address that. Background checks, waiting times, smaller capacity magazines – it all avoids a reality that even democrat pols won’t address, which is that ultimately, virtually every gun that is used to murder, began its career by entering into circulation as a legal weapon purchased from a gun dealer. Where they end up after that, nobody knows. But lots end up in the hands of either criminals, or crazies, or the perfectly sane family members of crazies.

keep the change on April 28, 2013 at 5:28 PM

They will specifically tie the murders to the GOP for obstructing their gun bill, while ignoring that the bill most likely wouldn’t have stopped the shooting anyway. They’ve pushed too hard this time, they aren’t retreating this time.

Flange on April 28, 2013 at 5:29 PM

If Team Obama were actually serious, was actually concerned, shall we say, about gun violence, there’d be federal marshals and SWAT teams deployed all across Chicago since the first day of Obama’s first administration…hunting down thugs…and deployed in major cities all across America where the strongest most restrictive gun laws are already on the books, and yet, the death tolls are far far higher than in most of the rest America where gun ownership is not a big deal.

In New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s world, the way to save more lives is to take an individual’s defense mechanism away.

To him, the many examples of people being kept safe as a result of being able to own guns don’t matter.

As with all things left, reason is abandoned to emotional demagoguery, along with a little intimidation…well, and a full time propaganda hipsters that are none too bright.

Reason would say that guns are widely owned without any problems whatsoever. Reason would say that the concentration of gun violence resides in gangs. Reason would also point out that there is a certain level of horrific mass shooting in gun-free zones perpetrated by seriously mentally ill people.

those are the facts. The reporters who pee in their pants when asked to hold a gun are not rational people.

the goal is obviously to form the basis of creating a gun registry. And to have the government decide who Can have a gun…and who Can Not have a gun. And the government will compile enough information on you to automate that decision.

so that’s what they are talking about. They are committed…and never give up. And patient.

one of the most frustrating things about the NRA/R party is that they pat themselves on the back and get back to tending their gardens. Rs have always been flat footed…not caring to argue their case till the last minute..then go back to making money

leftists aren’t like that…they have a vision…and they work assiduously for it…(and they have a massive propaganda arm to boot(

I guess they’re hoping that next time they can rush something through in the heat of the moment, without anyone being able to mount a defense. Cogitate on that for a minute.

Random, daikokookoo, or whatever other socks you use, you are not well. Is there someone you can contact?

Funny the likes of KTC are clueless as to the reality of gun control. They probably think crime went down in Great Britain. This bunch ain’t too bright.

rogerb on April 28, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Where do you think the guns come from? They start their careers in gun shops. Somebody has to walk in and buy them. From there, they filter down, changing hands, being stolen, being sold, traded, and finally being used to kill people.

You can’t go into a bomb shop and buy a bomb. You can’t buy dynamite unless you have a license to mine. If you want a bomb, you have to make your own.

If you people want guns, make your own. And while you’re at it. Make your own ammo, too.

keep the change on April 28, 2013 at 7:39 PM

The big deal on the bill is to get a national gun registry. The last bill accomplished this by explicitly stating the AG couldn’t keep one which means that any other agency could. The background check is just a palatable way for them to get this vital corner stone laid.

It’s too bad that the paranoid fantasies aren’t actually real. If there is anyone in America who should have their guns confiscated, it’s he who is certain he is going to need one to keep the guv’mint at bay. At least the criminals just shoot other criminals. Senator Manchin and Toomey revealed last week that they’re going to keep looking for ways to strengthen Senate support for the measures, and Machin confirmed that he’s optimistc that he can fix their mistakes from the last go-around and introduce a background check-centric, cleaner version of the bill:

Damage control for destroyed political careers. There is no momentum in the Senate any more discussion of gun control. Congress has moved on to the gays and amnesty for the illegals.

Ooops:

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.
The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year – a rise of 89 percent.

Oops again:

Further:

The District’s(DC) ban specifically points to Great Britain’s handgun ban in January 1997; but the number of deaths and injuries from gun crime in England and Wales increased 340 percent in the seven years from 1998 to 2005.
The rates of serious violent crime, armed robberies, rapes and homicide have also soared.
Similar experiences have been seen with other bans, such as those in Ireland and Jamaica.
