Video: We’ve had enough Bushes as president, says … Barbara Bush

posted at 11:21 am on April 25, 2013 by Allahpundit

How often does a potentially election-affecting soundbite drop three years out from the next presidential race? Good lord. This is a Gillooly-level kneecapping. I’m sitting here trying to come up with some sly strategic angle she might be playing to help Jeb by saying this, but I’ve got nothing. His biggest problem in 2016 is convincing people that he’s not Dubya and that “Bush fatigue” shouldn’t apply, and now here’s mom preempting him by saying yep, it should. Even worse is that she said it on camera rather than in a print interview. I think pols are naturally reluctant to attack dynastic politics, partly because they don’t want to foreclose dynastic opportunities for their own families and partly because it can sound like whining if not expressed well. (“No fair! The Bushes are hogging the ball!”) Now Jeb’s rivals don’t have to worry about that. Just cut the clip of mother Bush here and stick it in an ad. And she does this on the very day that George’s presidential library is opening, when Jeb is getting all sorts of free media speculation about running? (Dubya himself is urging Jeb to run, which maybe helps or maybe hurts.) My mind is blown. Any other Bushes want to step up and help crush his dreams? Maybe Neil Bush has some warm reminiscence about Jeb saying guns should be banned or something?

Speaking of dynastic politics, note Barbara’s repeated references to other “families” deserving a shot at the presidency. Not individuals. “Families.”

God Bless Mama Bush.

Last thing we need is Jeb in there. Or Marco.

blatantblue on April 25, 2013 at 11:23 AM

I totally agree.

Look how long we had to endure the Kennedy Dynasty?

Bush I and Bush II did they duty…generally fairly well…with dignity.

Time to move on.

coldwarrior on April 25, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Maybe W. was her favorite. Maybe Jeb broke too many flower vases around the house as a kid.

Maybe she listened to Mark Levin yesterday saying enough is enough of Bush presidencies.

rickv404 on April 25, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Thank you Mrs. Bush, yes, there are many qualified Individuals, and we have one totally unqualified individual occupying the office now.

Thank you Ma’am

jake-the-goose on April 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

I agree …

… and I’d like to add that this also applies to HONORARY Bushes, like Marco “INSTANT AMNESTY” Rubio.

Pork-Chop on April 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Hmm, interesting…

of course, maybe she didn’t have her FiberCon that day…

ToddPA on April 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

No more Kennedy, Clinton, Roosevelt, Rockefeller, Biden, Kerry, Boxter, Pelosi, Ried…..the list goes on.

I disagree. We haven’t had enough, we’ve had too many.

katy the mean old lady on April 25, 2013 at 11:34 AM

I figure she’s aware of the things that have been said about her husband and son, and thinks we don’t deserve to have another Bush to kick around. No matter her reasoning I agree.

DFCtomm on April 25, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Is anyone watching Clinton speak?

He seems as if he is on something.

blatantblue on April 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

She’s partly right.

EddieC on April 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Well she’s right. Good God, the entire conservative base is telling Jeb not to waste his or our time. Does anyone even think he’d win the nomination? Sure he could raise a crapload of money and try to steamroll his way through the primaries, but just ask Mitt Romney how that worked out once he was the GOP candidate and had to unite the party.

Doughboy on April 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Did Clinton say Re-writing History?

sandee on April 25, 2013 at 11:37 AM

For me, it’s not a question of “Bush fatigue,” it’s a question of avoiding dynastic politics. No more Bushes OR Clintons. And for goodness’ sake, no more Obamas.

TSUGambler on April 25, 2013 at 11:37 AM

This is a Gillooly-level kneecapping. I’m sitting here trying to come up with some sly strategic angle she might be playing to help Jeb by saying this, but I’ve got nothing.

How about she knows Jeb isn’t going to run and this is pre-emptive. If we’ve had enough Bushes, then we’ve had enough of the Clintons too. A stretch, I know, but I can’t say I disagree with Barbara Bush on this point.

Happy Nomad on April 25, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Not that I have any appetite for Jeb Bush either, but I’m also wondering why she’s doing this — saying “no more Bushes” on TV, I mean.

Aitch748 on April 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

He seems as if he is on something.

blatantblue on April 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

How odd. It’s usually the interns that are on something- their knees.

Happy Nomad on April 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Let’s see we haven’t had a Kennedy in a while. Chelsea Clinton is to young. How about a Gore, that seems fair. Or Beau, is 44 to young? I’ve got it Christine Pelosi.

Viator on April 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

I just don’t get why anyone would imagine a Jeb run would be a good idea.

thuja on April 25, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Good.. I’m glad that Mama Bush is finally snapping Jeb out of the ridiculous fantasy land he is currently living in. There is no way that anyone named Bush is going to be elected president in 2016 and Jeb has been out of office for so long and is incredibly rusty as his book tour and CPAC appearance showed.

Illinidiva on April 25, 2013 at 11:42 AM

So, she is saying that HER family doesn’t need to be president anymore… but that OTHER FAMILIES deserve the opportunity … to start a dynasty and make a CAREER IN POLITICS into a FAMILY BUSINESS.

I agree with her that there have been enough Bushes as president.

I disagree vehemently that we need OTHER FAMILIES to dominate the presidency and set up family dynasties in politics.

TERM LIMITS and lets stop electing these people based on belonging to the political class and the inner circle of the party. To whom one is related and who one knows should have NOTHING to do with one’s qualifications for office.

Let’s elect some people who will do the job to the best of their ability and HONOR THEIR OATH OF OFFICE fulling their role as PUBLIC SERVANTS.

I had the misfortune of having to sit through a speech by Jeb Bush at the NRA annual meeting in Orlando. The drooling moron had no clue about his audience or his topic.

It’s time to get out of the bushes and back on to the path of American exceptionalism.

The Bushes are the plague on the gop that keep on giving.

Jeb Bush is a Arne Duncan praising Common Core curriculum loving politician that wants to control the destiny of our children.

Individual freedom and liberty are the enemies of these ruling classers.

We’ve had enough Bushes as president, says … Barbara Bush

But not as Vice President! The Bush Family will lobby Rubio to put Jeb on the ticket and push the Hispanic angle over time. Columba will go along with it since it will limit her public appearances and functions — much like being a Governor’s wife again. And it will not step on the next generations chances with George P. Bush or his brother, Jeb.

Reagan/Bush
Bush/Quayle
Clinton/Gore

Obama/Biden

I’m afraid Marco is busily crapping in his own nest. Too bad. The kid had a nice throwing motion and plenty of arm strength for the out pattern. But, he couldn’t handle Schumer’s blind side blitz and now his field generalship is under question. Sad.

Karmashock on April 25, 2013 at 12:29 PM

The Bush’s are shrewd political operators and this is probably an orchestrated statement the result of a focus group calculated to diffuse and vent current anti-bush sentiments, while they simultaneously position Jeb to run.

I actually like the Bush family. (I know it’s cool to bash to the Bushes). However, Barbara is right….enough already. Maybe Jeb can spend 2016 helping his good friend Marco Rubio elected president :-)

terryannonline on April 25, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Jeb is pretty much washed up as a Presidential candidate–his Mom is right.

He missed his chance in 2006, when (as term-limited Governor of Florida), he should have run for Senate against Bill Nelson. Jeb was extremely popular in Florida at the time, and probably would have been a second-term Senator by now. Instead, he was probably looking at the Presidency for 2008, but after the mortgage debt crisis, the name Bush became toxic in Presidential politics, including in 2012. Jeb could have also challenged Nelson for Senate in 2012, but left the field open for Connie Mack, and Nelson cruised to ANOTHER term in the Senate.

Both of them were pro-choice and wouldn’t say a word to stop the slaughter of the voiceless millions lost during their time of influence.

Ruling classers like Barbara and Laura, might look pretty in a dress or be prim and proper but they protect THEMSELVES and their cozy lifestyles. All done with the goal of finding new ways to hand out candy that poisons individual liberty and freedom for Americans.

Yes, it takes so much courage to do exactly what the Democrats want us to do.

I would much rather find a candidate who is unafraid to champion conservative causes. Rubio is disqualified for 2016, wouldn’t know a good deal if it bit him on the ass.
