Video: Investigators find cache of fireworks dumped near Boston

posted at 10:01 am on April 25, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

How did the Tsarnaevs build the bombs that killed three and injured hundreds? Overnight, investigators may have found a key stash of evidence dumped in a Boston suburb — fireworks tossed out with their gunpowder removed:

Overnight, federal agents and police discovered what could be fresh evidence of how the men believed responsible for the twin detonations at the Boston Marathon finish line constructed their bombs.

Agents uncovered a stash of firework shells, some of which appeared to have been emptied of their gunpowder. The cache was discovered in a used clothing collection bin in a grocery store parking lot in Watertown.

“It was a device that looks like a big firecracker … that had a wick in it,” said Michael Tambosi, a representative of the group Planet Aid New England, which owns the clothing donation containers.

A driver for the organization first spotted the fireworks when he opened the bin. There were about half a dozen Roman candle shells in a plastic grocery bag and Tambosi said it looked like some of them had been scooped out.

It’s not yet clear that the cache has any connection to the Boston Marathon bombings.  Investigators had already found evidence that the Tsarnaevs had bought large fireworks and speculated that they had mined such items for the powder to build the bombs.  The location of this find certainly suggests a connection to the Tsarnaevs, but it could be that someone else has the same idea, too — which isn’t exactly a comforting thought.

As ABC also reports, Tsarnaev’s condition has improved enough to move him to more secure surroundings, but as I noted earlier, that doesn’t mean he’ll be cooperating.  That’s too bad, because New York police would certainly like a few answers to their questions:

Authorities say at this point they don’t believe the two had plans for any other attacks. But they also believe there is evidence that the two brothers might have been planning a trip to New York.

The man who was car-jacked by the bombers has reported he may have overheard them talking about Manhattan. Police were also scrutinizing photos posted on a Russian social network page by a friend and one time classmate of 19-year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The photo showed Tsarnaev and others in Times Square a year ago.

The New York police commissioner said he had been told by investigators that the two brothers were talking about traveling to New York after the bombings.

And before Dzhokhar stopped talking, he apparently told investigators what everyone had assumed:

Seven months later, authorities say he told FBI agents that he and his brother planted bombs along the route of the revered sporting event and killed a police officer. The reason he gave, according to authorities, was that Muslims are at war with the US.

This could never happen in Minnesota because we are banned from having anything more powerful than snakes and “showers of sparks”, and Gaia knows that Minnesotans would never travel to WI or the Dakotas to buy fireworks.

Clearly the administration spin will be that the Tsarnaev brothers were just so proud to be Muslim-Americans that they were buying their 4th of July fireworks early. But lets not jump to conclusions.

The sale of consumer fireworks—such as sparklers, firecrackers and party poppers—is prohibited in Massachusetts. It is illegal to purchase them in neighboring states to bring home.

Hard as it is to believe, the terrorists who killed four and maimed hundreds broke the law when they bought fireworks in New Hampshire and brought them across state lines.

The sale of consumer fireworks—such as sparklers, firecrackers and party poppers—is prohibited in Massachusetts. It is illegal to purchase them in neighboring states to bring home.

In my SoCal community, only the sale of “safe & sane” fireworks are permitted, beginning exactly 5 days before the 4th of July. Its illegal to fire off anything else, although you wouldn’t know that, since just nearly about anything up to what sounds like dynamite exploding, the tell-tale sounds of gunfire and rockets red glare in the night sky can be experienced. Hardly any enforcement, since the LEOs have to see it in action to act. Good luck with that.

Hey, but its comforting to have all these rules and restrictions on the book.

Why do they do what they do? -Biden

Does anybody care? Anybody?

How about we dump the search for motive and look at the giant, multicultural dung-heap filled with fallacious assumptions, misguided self-recriminations, ginned-up claims of prejudice and its entire goal of wiping our American culture?

The bottom line is our immigration service is not working to keep dangerous people out of our country. We make zero effort to ensure people are introduced to our culture and assimilated into the American way of life. We’ve destroyed the very basis of our society by bending to the whimsical foolishness of know-nothings who have trampled on our social mores and the very fabric of what makes America great. As a result, we are no longer a destination; but a temporary respite. A stopover on which such people take, destroy and move on.

These terrorists are a perfect example of liberals handiwork and the foolish, misguided notions they have tried to indoctrinate into our culture. We are all worse off for it. Just ask the dead and maimed in Boston.

Problem is, which liberals either don’t know or don’t care about, taggants are opposed by the NRA, the Institute of Makers of Explosives, and the National Academy of Sciences which did an actual scientific study on the matter.

Taggants run the risk of making explosive compounds unstable, and add significant cost (IME). No taggant system has been found that is technically feasible, and such a system should not be implemented (NAS). This was all discovered and recommended in 1996.

Here is the source if you’d like to read it.

And, of course, the Martin family. Richard Martin, an eight-year-old killed. Martin’s mother, Denise, gravely injured. His sister, sister, Jane, 7-years-old, lost a leg. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could not have helped but see the Martin family as he placed his bomb down three feet away from them. That makes Tsarnaev into somekind of a sociopathic monster- allegedly.

verbaluce on April 25, 2013 at 10:31 AM

I usually leave the trolls to wallow in their own excrement but I make an exception here to make a point.

Other than gun stores probably don’t accept EBT payments, why couldn’t the Tsarnaev terrorists buy guns. The younger terrorist couldn’t because of his age but as of April 30, 2012 all lawful permanent resident aliens are eligible to apply for a MA resident license to carry or firearms identification card. They could also have done what they do in Chicago and buy guns illegally.

If an individual is plotting to kill innocent Americans at a sporting event, I don’t think a little thing like gun control laws are going to stop them.

Now from the 2nd amendment arguments we’ve heard here, for many…it should be as easy – and these restrictions are ‘unconstitutional’.
And I suppose if a bunch of Muslim citizens want to form a well regulated militia, stockpile arms and ammo, and run around in the woods in camo shooting things, well the NRA would have a hard time taking any issue with that.

the article is about the firecrackers, and at the bottom they slip in, he told us why he did it, we are at war with you

Guess we should be grateful that information was shared. Must have been too many witnesses in the room. That statement is not a plus for the Obama Drama

As I write ABC news on the radio announced the bombers were plotting another attack. The newscaster never mentioned they did it because muslims are at war with the US

I figure it is either another bombing in the works or it could be more people involved with this hater trying to cover for him (destroy evidence).

TerryW on April 25, 2013 at 3:21 PM

I’ve pretty much had it with the crazy media obsession with extending the protective adjectival reference “alleged” to just about any person or event having any relation at all to a newsworthy crime or crime scene, not just to the accused.

Because of constitutionally guaranteed extensions of rights of an accused — most notably the fictional conception of the presumption of innocence — news folk understandably and regularly reference any accused individual as being the “alleged” perpetrator. Fine. That is as it should be.

However, it is patently absurd to reference the victims of what was clearly a horrific crime as being the “alleged victims” as Brian Ross somehow managed to do in this report. They are the victims! Period.

The other day, I even heard one news anchor cautiously referencing the “alleged bombings” in Boston, long after it was very clear what had caused the explosions we all witnessed on TV.

No, idiot! Those were bombings. There was nothing alleged about them!

Nor were the victims “alleged.” Turkey!

Does this make any sense at all?

Hmmmm…..I’m building a bomb out of regular, legal fireworks. I need to get rid of the carcasses of the mortars that I removed the gun powder from…where could I put them so that they’ll never be found and possibly be traced back to me…..

EUREKA! How about a Goodwill clothing drop box? They’ll never find them in there.

C’mon, man. Anthony Wiener isn’t that dumb.
