Chris Matthews: Bush should have studied more in college to avoid susceptibility to Trotskyite Straussianism, or something

posted at 6:01 pm on April 25, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

I think maybe he pounced on the 43rd’s joke earlier today — “there was a time in my life when I wasn’t likely to be found in a library, much less found one” — maybe a little too literally. I present the original analytical stylings of Chris Matthews, everybody: Make sense of it if you can.

I think he fell into bad company. And what I think George Bush’s problem was, having gone to school and put down people like Bob Shrum who read books and thinking they’re all a bunch of intellectuals, and basically mocking that kind of a life where you really are a life of ideas. And then he got into the White House, and all of a sudden fell in love with people with ideas, these neoconservatives, with all their ideas of Strauss and all that stuff, and… whatever it is, some form of Trotskyism or what it is, whatever the tradition those neocons come from… He fell into believing all that stuff, and he started believing this freedom agenda, and all this stuff came from them. It came from bookish people, the same bookish people he put down in college. We would be better off if he studied in college, and then came to the presidency educated so he wouldn’t be a hermit crab. That’s the problem. He had to assume an identity once he was there.

Yes, because people who “read books” are pretty difficult to come by, and I’m sure that the former governor of Texas’s political beliefs were like liquid Jell-O waiting to be molded until the moment he stepped through the White House doors. What the what?

I think Chrissie has had a stroke. He’s inserting words into his that don’t have any logical connection to what he’s discussing.

This might explain why he thinks everything is racism?

Admittedly, I know little about Strauss, but how is he supposed to be a neo-con? My understanding of Strauss has always been that he was a quack contrarian, who would take the common (and most logical) interpretation of any philosopher’s writing and turn it into something completely different.

Glenn Jericho on April 25, 2013 at 6:08 PM

That is one perspective on Strauss, but another is that the philosophers he was studying did in fact hide messages, because they had no choice in the past. For instance, the great medieval Jewish philosopher, Maimonides, no doubt, did play the game Strauss describes. I do think bizarre when Straussians try to use Strauss’s insights to analyze someone like Nietzsche who had no incentive to hide his message.

My opinion is that Maimonides is really the only great figure in intellectual history for whom the Straussian approach is really useful.

So Chris Matthews is honestly arguing that Bush made it through the first 50 years of his life without any core beliefs what-so-ever, then on the basis of that lack of any real core beliefs ran for governor of Texas twice, served in that office for 5 years, and was then elected to the Presidency. At that point, with no real beliefs at all, he was so malleable as to be immediately molded by neoconservatives and become their puppet?

Shump on April 25, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Bush is a Trotskyite? Matthews could have only wished.

Of course, tomorrow he’ll be back to calling Ted Cruz the next Joe McCarthy, who quite frankly, is sounding like friggin’ Nostradamus these days. A weather underground pentagon bomber is friends with the president, but the idea that there are Marxists at Harvard is SO off the wall!

I think he fell into bad company. And what I think George Bush’s problem was, having gone to school and put down people like Bob Shrum who read books and thinking they’re all a bunch of intellectuals, and basically mocking that kind of a life where you really are a life of ideas.

Well, I agree that Shrum & Co. think they’re intellectuals. Including Chris Mathews. As for a “life of ideas”, I think Chrissie is confusing that with the “life of the mind”, which is something entirely different.

And then he got into the White House, and all of a sudden fell in love with people with ideas, these neoconservatives, with all their ideas of Strauss and all that stuff, and… whatever it is, some form of Trotskyism or what it is, whatever the tradition those neocons come from…

The only ones around who strikes me as “Trotskyites” are The One and his clique’. But then, I’ve actually read Lev Davidovich Bronshtein aka Leon Davidovich Trotsky’s writings, along with Lenin’s.

He fell into believing all that stuff, and he started believing this freedom agenda, and all this stuff came from them.

Uhh, no, it doesn’t. Shrum & Co. wouldn’t recognize a “freedom agenda” if it bit them on the a$$. Unless it was the freedom to smoke dope and have somebody else pay for it. I can forgive Chrissie for not recognizing Jeffersonian democracy or foreign policy (cf. Barbary pirates) when he sees it, though; I’m sure he never studied it in journalism school.

It came from bookish people, the same bookish people he put down in college. We would be better off if he studied in college, and then came to the presidency educated so he wouldn’t be a hermit crab. That’s the problem. He had to assume an identity once he was there.

The “bookish people” Chrissie speaks of were rooting for the enemy then. They still are today. I suspect that rather than “putting them down”, President Bush just ignored them. Thereby making the First Mistake Of Dealing With Bullies; ignoring them doesn’t make them go away, it just makes them do more outrageous things to get your attention. They are power-hungry, arrogant, and egotistical. What they are not, is rational.

No wonder Chrissie thinks they’re gods.

exactly..

I know what my IQ is, and when I was a child, the best lesson my mother taught me was “people HATE being talked down too,.. never let folks think you believe you’re smarter, better than them, or you’ll never have a friend”… a paraphrase of that lesson.. one similar to what I tell my daughter who’s made the Honor Society, never hide your intelligence to get by, but don’t talk down to people.

Bush is self effacing because he’s not stuck up and like a Matthews level dunce trying desperately to appear something he isn’t… smart.

Look, I never went past high school, but most folks get intimidated by the fact I remember so much.. a sort of mnemonic memory, which I developed as a coping device when I was a child for then unknown ADHD.. my recall is not complete, about 85%.. but I can still tell you the subject and details from any book I read as a child, and adult. An Honor Society grad, never studied, and basic training Honor grad, top 5%.. not bragging, because memory does not equal wisdom, that much is certain..

Just those who are really smart, don’t need to wave it like a flag, it’ll show on it’s own

Those who do wave it around.. are trying to fake it.

Thank god we now have a president that didn’t hang out with or surround himself with shady characters.

Here is the hawkdriver bet. Dinner at your favorite restaurant or dinner at mine, Chris Matthews is diagnosed clinically insane before the end of the year.

hawkdriver on April 25, 2013 at 8:27 PM

I’d go one further and say he will be elected to office by 2016. A clinical diagnoses would only bolster his gravitas with the left.

tom daschle concerned on April 25, 2013 at 9:58 PM

He might be someone who is not very smart, but thinks of himself as very smart. Those people throw out words they think sound smart, like “Trotskyism,” and make fun of people who don’t use them, like George Bush.

“Intelligent,” as clique.

Great screen name! One of my local PBS stations showed the great Harry Nilsson documentary last month.

A+

Ah, a scenario I had not considered. Where should I sent the O’Charlie’s gift card?

hawkdriver on April 25, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Considering that after I gave you a helicopter ride in an aircraft that belongs to the US Army, I’d go to jail, the risk hardly seems reasonable.

How about this? I bet Chris Matthews rips his shirt off during a live broadcast of “Hardball” while singing “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” with a backscreen shot of obama in the Rose Garden playing with Bo, or I buy you a Lee multistage reloader, teach you how to use it and give you all of my .223/5.56 virgin brass.

If I win you buy dinner for the entire hawk clan to include the hawkdaughter’s boyfriend who once ate half the ribs off of the grill before the first one made it to the picnic table.

Thats good stuff, right there. :)

I believe the President and Rove had an ongoing contest regarding who could read the most books. Bush read a ton of books.

BubbaCluck on April 25, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Incoherent…..nothing worse then someone thinking he’s an intellectual. The cliff claven of cable TV

O’Charlies? Keep it. I’ll take something tangible. Smoked. From the grill. :)

Let’s leave poor Chrissie in the dark where he belongs. These occasional features on HotAir likely boost his ratings more than any idiotic thing he can come up with to say. I for one would like to see his viewership go down, not up. There’s no shortage of low-information voters.

Actually, that was a pretty good description of obama. I especially like the way the head MSDNC moron used Trotsky as a conservative traitor. I guess he really is a communist or communist dupe. He certainly does not have the vaunted education and book learnin’ of which he speaks.

Old Country Boy on April 26, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Perhaps Bush should have been tutored by renowned Communists, mentored by racist hate-spewing pastors, & hung out with unrepentant terrorists who perpetrated bombings that killed Americans like Obama did, as well, Mr. Matthews?!

easyt65 on April 26, 2013 at 8:08 AM

He fell into believing all that stuff, and he started believing this freedom agenda, and all this stuff came from them.

Chrissy says that like “freedom” is a bad thing.
