Report: Tsarnaev admits that he and brother were headed to New York; Update: To … party? Update: CIA wanted Tsarnaev on terror watch list a year ago

posted at 4:01 pm on April 24, 2013 by Allahpundit

So the carjacking victim didn’t misunderstand what they were saying after all. Next stop: Manhattan.

Sources told CBS News on Tuesday that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, has admitted that he and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, were behind the bombings and that they had plans to go to Manhattan.

Investigators said the suspects may have set out for New York City if not for the death of Tamerlan and the eventual capture of Dzhokhar.

Authorities gained new insight about what the brothers may have been planning next after speaking with a carjacking victim who police said was held hostage by the suspects Thursday night, CBS News reported.

They got caught late last Thursday and already had at least one more pressure-cooker bomb prepared. Had they made it to Manhattan, they would have been there in time for weekend crowds in Times Square on Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re looking to maximize casualties, there’s no better time and place; Faizal Shahad also chose Saturday night in Times Square for his attempted car-bombing in 2010. It’s still strange to me, though, that they hung around Boston after the marathon bombing when they knew people were looking for them there rather than head straight for NYC. Their M.O. was an odd mix of planning and spontaneity: They made sure the bombs were built correctly, but beyond that there appears to have been no Plan B. No car ready to roll or train tickets purchased to take them out of town, no money stashed away for expenses during life as fugitives. Makes me wonder if the plan initially was to be suicide bombers and that got changed late in the game for some reason, either because they didn’t want to go through with it or because they decided at the eleventh hour that they could hit more targets later by remaining alive.

Update: C’mon.

The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told investigators that he and his brother were headed for New York to party after the attack, the New York police commissioner said Wednesday.

A man authorities say was carjacked by the brothers has told investigators that he heard one of them say “Manhattan,” Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters. But he said investigators don’t believe the brothers were headed to New York to “continue what they were doing.”

It’s amazing that Dzhokhar found time amid his busy party schedule to murder people. Did these two morons really not understand that they were destined to be the focus of a nationwide manhunt? What did they think was going to happen when they went clubbing in NYC?

Update: What did the CIA know, or think they knew, about Tamerlan Tsarnaev in late 2011?

The CIA asked the main U.S. counterterrorism agency to add the name of one of the suspected Boston Marathon bombers to a watch list more than a year before the attack, according to U.S. officials.

The agency took the step after Russian authorities contacted officials there in the fall of 2011 and raised concerns that Tamerlan Tsarnaev — who was killed last week in a confrontation with police — was seen as an increasingly radical Islamist and could be planning to travel overseas. The CIA requested that his name be put on a database maintained by the National Counterterrorism Center…

The CIA’s request came months after the FBI had closed a preliminary inquiry into Tsarnaev after getting a similar inquiry about him from Russian state security, according to officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Law enforcement officials said that the request to the FBI in 2011 originated from fears by the Russian government that Tamerlan was a threat to Russia and would commit a terrorist act in Russia — not the United States. The request came from Russian federal police to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

We already knew that his name had been entered into the TIDE terror database, but what I didn’t know until now is that the CIA had reason to want him in there even after the FBI had concluded its investigation. Was the CIA simply being cautious by tossing his name into the pile because the Russians had flagged it or did something new come to light after the FBI stopped looking at him?

Either the FBI is stupid enough to believe Jahar that he was going there to party, or Jahar was stupid enough to believe Tamerlan that they were going there to party. You don’t head to NY with a pressure cooker, home made grenades, firearms, and undisclosed other explosives in a stolen car after killing a cop to party; especially after seeing yourself in FBI photos on national television.

Who knows what they could have done. They easily could have dropped pressure cookers on a subway, gotten off, and used their grenades and guns in a rampage elsewhere in NY. The idea that they were going to go clubbing is crazy.

While I understand that someone who is consider a threat to the U.S. should be on every list we have, I don’t understand why we wouldn’t put him on a list to give Russia (or whatever country) a heads up if he is on the move.

9/11 was allowed to happen because the Clinton administration built a wall between the CIA and the FBI…

… President Bush took that wall down.

With ‘Fast and Furious’, Benghazi, and all the other shenanagins Obowma has been running pretty loose with the law, I have little doubt that the wall is back up…

… and as a result, another terror attack in the U.S. and Americans are dead.

Er, that was a memo sent out in October of 2011 ordering all FBI manuals to remove any references to the possibly of Islamists committing terrorism.

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Peace/2013/04/20/Flashback-FBI-Training-Manual-Purged-References-To-Islamic-Terror

The FBI insists to CBS that they took all the required steps that were permissable under the law. However, around the same time the bureau interviewed Tsarnaev, changes in the FBI training manual took place as well. The FBI’s own departmental counter-terrorism analytic lexicon was purged of key words that could reference Islamic terrorism. Words like Muslim, Islam, Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and sharia were not mentioned once in the FBI’s counter-terrorism lexicon afterwards.

The FBI initially denied the existence of the document in 2012 until PJ Media’s Patrick Poole posted the unclassified doc in May of that year. Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) took the issue to the House floor and excoriated the administration for allowing the changing of the training manual to happen.

chemman on April 24, 2013 at 5:55 PM

And some more:

Fri, Oct 21, 2011

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole confirmed on Wednesday that the Obama administration was pulling back all training materials used for the law enforcement and national security communities, in order to eliminate all references to Islam that some Muslim groups have claimed are offensive.

“I recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security,” Cole told a panel at the George Washington University law school.

-snip-

Dwight C. Holton, the U.S. Attorney in Oregon said he had spoken with Holder directly about the issue of the terror training materials. Holton is the federal prosecutor who announced the arrest of so-called “Christmas tree bomber” Mohamed Osman Mohamud in 2010. That announcement made no mention of Mohamud’s Muslim faith.

“I want to be perfectly clear about this: training materials that portray Islam as a religion of violence or with a tendency towards violence are wrong, they are offensive, and they are contrary to everything that this president, this attorney general and Department of Justice stands for,” Holton said Wednesday. “They will not be tolerated.”

I think we’re done with this subject…

JMO, but it seems to me he tried to act “normally” in the days right after the bombing, whatever that meant for him, trying to avoid detection. But when their pictures were released and they knew it was just a matter of time before they would be apprehended, they shot a cop, stole a car, loaded up the car with guns and explosives, and were headed for NYC. I just don’t think it’s believable they were going to party.

Yes, but you need to understand that all sins are forgiven to those who die in the cause of Islam. This is an important factor in understanding the Muslim mind.

Party and drugs = bad
Party and drugs + suicide bombing that kills kuffar = direct route to paradise.

Its a sacrificial offering by which Islamic sins can be forgotten, and the formula works for any sin, not just parties and drugs.

Was the CIA simply being cautious by tossing his name into the pile because the Russians had flagged it or did something new come to light after the FBI stopped looking at him?

Maybe the FBI and the CIA have different standards for assessing threats.

I’d need to see the chronology of events here, but did the Russian authorities hear back from the FBI with the neg dec on Tamerlan, so they appealed to the CIA to persuade the FBI to reverse their decision? It may not be something new that came to light. It may be that the Russians didn’t tell the FBI a reason which would clinch adding Tamerlan expecting that the FBI would find enough on theri own to add him to the list. How about a question here: Will Russian security tell the CIA things that they won’t tell the FBI?

Funny you say that, because it does exist – to keep an eye on ex-pats who might want to finance “resistance” movements.

It does beg the question – how did the Russians know about Tamerlan’s extracurricular interests in 2011, before he went to Dagestan?

coldwarrior on April 24, 2013 at 10:23 PM

What did the CIA know, or think they knew, about Tamerlan Tsarnaev in late 2011?

And how did they know it? The CIA does not operate within the US, where Tamerlan had been living the past 6-7 years.

And how did the Russians know enough about a guy who had been living in the US the past 6-7 years to consider him a threat to Russia?

So both the CIA and their Russian cuonterparts, agencies that do not theoretically concern themselves with what is going on within US borders, both thought in 2011 that Tamerlan was a potential threat.

And the FBI did not.

Sounds to me like Tamerlan must have had contact with foreign Islamist militants in 2011, and/or before that. The Russians say he met with some while in Dagestan/Chechnya in 2012.

Yet we are told by this admin there is no foreign connection or involvement in the Boston terrorist bombing.

This does not add up.

Obama has always been an ardent apologist for imperialistic Islam.

Those who voted for him supported him in part because of this lickspittle, craven stance.

Whether out of cowardice in the face of a brutal, violent religious threat, or from a world-historical naivete about the murderous tenets of Mohammad, or possibly because they approve of Islam’s depredations against a West they hate for leaving them with case of post-colonial guilt.

A morbid, unhistorical form of self-loathing which gives the suicidal a kick by witnessing the big, bad “colonial” powers reap well-deserved “blowback” for their imperialistic “crimes”.

(Coyly overlooking all of the equal and worse imperialistic, misogynistic, incalculably cruel crimes committed by Islam during the past 1350 years, with its scorched earth policies which killed and enslaved millions from Mecca to Morocco, Spain to the Seychelles, Turkey to Timbuktu).

Obama has actively sought to geld America’s ability to fight militant, expansionistic, terroristic Islam.

Being a Quisling or a madman (there are no other choices) himself.
