Animal-rights activists trash years of autism research in Milan lab raid

posted at 9:21 pm on April 24, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Had this crime been perpetrated by a roving band of evangelicals who object to scientific treatment of autism and schizophrenia, you might have heard a lot about it this week. As it is, that would never happen, and it was animal-rights activists who did the damage. Will the reputation of their cause and mainstream activists have to contend with their actions?

Activists occupied an animal facility at the University of Milan, Italy, at the weekend, releasing mice and rabbits and mixing up cage labels to confuse experimental protocols. Researchers at the university say that it will take years to recover their work.

Many of the animals at the facility are genetic models for psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia.

No arrests have been made following the 12-hour drama, which took place on Saturday, although the university says that it will press charges against the protesters.

Officials know the organization responsible, they negotiated with them, and have photos of them posted on their social media sites in the act of their crime. Should be pretty easy to prosecute them unless the Italian system is too busy working on Amanda Knox’s extradition:

Five activists entered laboratories in the university’s pharmacology department on Saturday morning. The lack of signs of a break-in suggests that the activists may have used an illegally acquired electronic card, says pharmacologist Francesca Guidobono-Cavalchini, who works there. They prised open the reinforced doors of the facility on the fourth floor, and two of them chained themselves by the neck to the main double doors such that any attempt to open the doors could have endangered their lives.

They posted pictures of themselves on their organisation’s website, where they also declared that they would stay for as long as it took to get agreement to leave with all the animals. The facility hosts around 800 animals, mostly genetically modified mice but also some rabbits, according to Martino Bolognesi, a structural biologist at the university. The activists had brought supplies of food and sleeping bags.

But hey, they’re just there to help the animals:

Some of the mice they removed were delicate mutants and immunosuppressed ‘nude’ mice, which die very quickly outside controlled environments.

Oops. Screw the humans, too:

Michela Matteoli, a neurobiologist who works on autism and other disorders and lost most of her own research in the attack, says that she found some research students crying in the disrupted facility on Monday morning.

“It will take three people at least a year to build up the colonies we had of mouse models of different psychiatric diseases,” she says.

There are, of course, plenty of animal-rights organizations that do good work without being totally insane. I’ve fostered pets for some of them in my community. But animal-rights and environmental extremists have proven to be be capable of lots of damage and widespread, documented criminal activity. Yet they rarely get the press, say, a picture of a rude sign at a Tea Party rally might get. Maybe our more mainstream animal-rights friends could muster some loud denunciations of such tactics to prevent further losses of valuable research. A series of posters, maybe, featuring wasted celebrities stumbling out of swanky nightclubs—Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, etc. “I’d rather get smashed than smash a lab.”

Although, I sure as hell wouldn’t trust PETA with the mice these guys got away with. Maybe we could chill with the credence we give those guys while we’re at it, too, huh Hollywood? They’d kill your teacup pups quick as look at ‘em.

As a bonus, April is Autism Awareness Month. Way to go, guys.

(Here are a couple links for helping those affected by autism, while these guys are busy tearing down.)

At the medical school I attended there was a massive “outcry” from these types over research done with cats purposely given (under anesthesia and almost all ultimately sacrificed) various spinal injuries.
The lead researcher was a former military trauma neurosurgeon and his work was to aid soldiers with traumatic spinal injuries in war, and it was primarily military funded. This was nearly 30 years ago. Just because there were damn cats.

I used to work with medical lasers for dermatology and eye surgery and I can say many lab animals were sacrificed unnecessarily for the simple purpose of demonstrating to physicians how the different color lasers reacted with organ tissues. You could have used an apple, banana, pear, or orange and demonstrated the same laser effect.

Animal sacrifice is invaluable for modern research, but it should be done only when necessary and not simply when it’s convenient.

Just talked about this in pharmacology this week. The dream is “in silico” in which potential drugs are “tested” by computer modeling their “fit” in the receptor they suspect is the correct target. They’re making lots of progress but its just as feasible as “clean coal” as a stand-in for the complex processes modeled by research animals. It takes 10-20 generations to back-cross these special knockouts/knockins and it’s very expensive as you can imagine.

The experiments themselves rely on the absence of “confounding factors.” They have to start from scratch and most of the mice will have to be euthanized. Bang up job, Luddites.

Of course, Italian animal-rights misanthropes will never reproduce, to save the planet, so they’ll never have to raise an autistic child.

Time to pay attention:

Another notable incident occurred Dec. 18, when animal extremists vandalized a game-bird farm in Somerset County, N.J.

Members of the Animal Liberation Front, labeled by the FBI as a domestic terror group, issued an Internet statement taking responsibility for the vandalism.

“Last night we gave an early Christmas present to around 250 of our friends at the Griggstown Quail Farm,” the Web bulletin from ALF activists read. “After clipping through the fencing, we cut out large sections of the canopy covering three pens, then flushed several hundred quail, pheasants and partridges out into the starry sky and freedom. The farm is located by a waterway and open fields, and we wish our friends the best of luck in establishing new lives.”

The FBI, which is investigating, says the activists’ actions actually resulted in the death of thousands of birds.

“When these misguided individuals ripped open the holding pens, they only succeeded in freeing these birds directly into the path of oncoming traffic on a nearby busy highway, and sentenced the remainder to slowly freeze to death without food, water, or shelter,” Steven Siegel, a spokesman for the FBI’s Newark office, told the Associated Press. “It’s like liberating fish from an aquarium by throwing them on the floor.”

ROFL When was the last time you hunted, never?

Ever seen game farm quail, they often “imprint” on their human ranchers and get used to being around people. Often they will run and hide when released into the wild rather than flushing and flying. This is also very common with quail in general because they are territorial, not migratory.

You really REALLY need to get out more.

Being a conservative animal-rights chick is a lonely road. *sigh*
I’ve NEVER made a secret of it-here or anywhere else. Agree to disagree.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 24, 2013 at 10:45 PM

thats a load of bull, since quail can fly

nonpartisan on April 24, 2013 at 9:48 PM

.
Idiot. I’ve run over plenty of quail while they were running back and forth on the roadway and smashed ‘em flat with my SUV. They just don’t get out of the way, not even wild ones. Dunno what’s wrong with those birds but plenty of country folk can corroborate my story.

ExpressoBold on April 24, 2013 at 10:33 PM

I actually live out in the woods (near the New Hampshire White Mountains) and I can tell you that in all of my years here I’ve very rarely seen quail actually fly. We also have the woodcock, which is larger. They are ground nesting birds and since they are relatively small (unlike our Wild Turkeys, see below) they are much harder for a predator to spot in comparison to a Wild Turkey, which will stick out like a Kevnin McHale.

On the other hand, I have regularly seen NH Wild Turkeys fly up 40 feet above the ground into tree limbs here to spend the night. In fact they do that a lot. So much for the WKRP Theory.

I consider this to be a crime against humanity, worthy of capital punishment.

someone once said “better to die as free men than live as slaves”

nonpartisan on April 24, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Unless, of course, you’re a “progressive”.

Then, you prefer to be enslaved. In fact, you even help forge your own chains.

I see your point-I just don’t like people causing pain to animals.
I know my meds-none are psychiatric so save it LoL-were tested on animals-but…

annoyinglittletwerp on April 24, 2013 at 10:47 PM

From the comments at the nature site:

……
I’m a PhD student in the department where the attack took place.
I don’t want only to repeat how much we’ve lost in terms of time, work, efforts and perspectives; how much money have been wasted, that came from foundations and, even more importantly, from the solidarity of many families with children affected by autism, mental retardation or Rett syndrome; and how deep is their and our frustration…

What I really want to become clear is that we DO think that animals HAVE rights. We DO RESPECT them, and treat them with as much precaution and attention as we can, often much more than what is legally required, in order to minimize their suffering and improve the quality of their lives. We DO try to use as less animals as is compatible with research aims and we work hard not to waste their lives.

Finally, making this kind of attack DOES NOT help animals. Many of the stolen mice will die soon outside our facilities because they have a weaker immune system (the ones that didn’t die during the transport, since tens and tens of mice of both sexes were mixed up in “ecobox” boxes by the “animalist”), and moreover as much animals will be needed to compensate their loss to make the reasearch go on.

Wild turkeys do, indeed, fly; and roost in trees. And, they’re damned smart birds.

Domestic turkeys, however, cannot fly. They’re bred for massive breasts and smaller wings. And they’re possibly the stupidest animal going…except for progressives.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 24, 2013 at 10:49 PM

I have Asperger’s-but am against using animals in testing.Gotta go with the pro-animal people this time.
In this day and age, the researchers should be able to do their work using computer models. Testing on animals should be no longer necessary.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 24, 2013 at 10:34 PM

We *should* have flying jet cars, a cure for cancer, and colonies in space by now, too.

Doesn’t mean we *do* or *can* yet. Until then, we make progress as best and humanely as possible.

In this case, we would go from computer models to human use? You trust computer models and the people who make them that much?

Midas on April 24, 2013 at 10:49 PM

That’s because we decided we didn’t want them, minus possibly the cure for cancer. If half the effort at making electronic toys for adults had gone into such things, you might well see a few of them.

CW on April 24, 2013 at 10:51 PM

No. I royally screwed up my body when I was younger. My body can’t handle vegan. I do keep sort of kosher-which means modified vegetarian in my case. It does bother me that I have to eat meat or I’ll get sick.

Cindy Munford on April 24, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Good friend with an autistic child. Barely talks. No bonding.

I’d snap the necks of a 1,000 lab rats to ease her pain. Without hesitation.

It’s not cool. I don’t know about aspbergers, but this wasn’t that. This kid will never be posting like you. He’ll always need care.

They’re rodents. We can spare a few.

I’ve seen that slow pain of realization that your child is mentally disabled, severly. At 4,, his vocabulary was about 10 words. No mother bond, and that was the worst. Violent episodes towards his sisters sporadically.

A few rats/mice to cure that? Hell yea.
