Video: Car bomb erupts outside French embassy in Tripoli, 3 hurt

posted at 8:01 am on April 23, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Three people were wounded in a car bomb attack on the French embassy in Tripoli, including one 13-year-old girl, and Libyan investigators say they’ve never seen anything like this before in Tripoli. “Why would France be targeted?” asks the CNN host in this clip covering the car-bomb attack against the French embassy in Tripoli. That’s a good question, especially since Libyans can thank France in large part for the liberation of Tripoli from the Moammar Qaddafi regime:

NBC and Reuters have a brief account of the attack:

A car bomb went off outside the French Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, on Tuesday, a Libyan Foreign Ministry official said.

The official said two guards were hurt, but no one had died.

Television images showed extensive damage to buildings in the area.

“I think there were two blasts, the first was very loud and then there was a smaller one,” a  witness told Reuters. “There was some black smoke at first, and then it turned white.”

Let’s get back to the question posed by the incredulous CNN host.  Why attack France?  For that matter, why attack the US consulate in Benghazi last September?  The US led the intervention that saved Benghazi from an attack by Qaddafi and his forces and allowed the rebellion to remain alive, which included a number of Islamist terror networks operating in eastern Libya.  If anything, they should feel gratitude to the US, France, the UK, and the rest of NATO for liberating them from Qaddafi. The fact that they don’t should be informing our impulse to intervene on behalf of other rebellions with significant participation by Islamist networks — Syria being the prime example here — but probably won’t.

Those Islamist terror networks pushed all of the Western consulates out of Benghazi and all of eastern Libya; we were the last to go.  It looks like they want to push Western interests out of Tripoli, and aren’t wasting time in making that plain, either.  If Libyans aren’t used to seeing that in Tripoli, they’re going to be coming up to speed in short order.

And you can be sure the LSM will not say the phrase “Islamic terror”.

Because the Islamists hate any nation that is even relatively free and modern for no reason other than that they are not Islamic nations? Or perhaps that is too complex a concept for CNN to comprehend.

Photosynthesis is too complex a concept for CNN to comprehend.

But when it comes to the nuances of the so-called religion of peace, none of the airheads on news networks are sufficiently intelligent enough to speak with authority.

It’s not all their fault. They sandwich in a story about a car bomb in Tripoli between some celeb being arrested for DUI and flirty spring fashions on a budget. They go to journalism school to learn how to work in front of a camera and the right make-up for their skin type. And they are fundamentally lazy- relying on DNC talking points instead of research and analysis.

Would these bombers be considered ‘home grown’ like Geraldo says of the immigrant Chechyens who bombed the Boston Marathon? If so, it’s not international terrorism — a detail which the LSM is trying to avoid acknowledging at all cost.

Those who are self deluded only wake up when they personally are injured. I think Ann Coulter said something like “A liberal is a conservative that hasn’t been mugged yet.”

Unfortunately for those of us living in the real world, by the time these mentally lazy fools and idiots wake up many more will needlessly suffer.

There have been 20,000 – twenty thousand attacks by muslim terrorists around the world since 9/11. How many more people will have to die or be maimed for life before the liberal loons wake up?

Liam, clearly you’re behind the times. We didn’t have a terror attack on Monday. We had an angry young man who led his innocent brother astray. While unfortunate, the Boston Marathon bombing had nothing to do with Islam, Chechnya, or terrorism.

The Left is desperate for a big policy win; re-electing Obama is no longer enough. They need his plans to work, which they aren’t. They need Europe to pull it together, when what’s starting to happen is that even they are pulling back some socialist policies. Obamacare is proving, even to liberals, to be even worse than we who opposed it had been warning all along.

The Left is shocked beyond their ability to cope. As more of their plans fail, expect them to become more shrill and obsessive.

dogsoldier on April 23, 2013 at 8:19 AM

You said it yourself when you quoted Ann Coulter. The terror attacks have to be personal before the left will be willing to call terrorism what it is. As I posted above, the narrative for the Boston Marathon bombing has already shifted away from terrorism to an innocent soul misguided by his evil older brother. No terrorism or involvement with Islam in the incident.

This question pi$$es me off. muslims hate anyone who is not one of them.
Hell, they even hate each other if they’re the ‘wrong’ kind of muslim.

Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance. We see it in the history of Andalusia and Cordoba during the Inquisition. I saw it firsthand as a child in Indonesia, where devout Christians worshiped freely in an overwhelmingly Muslim country. That is the spirit we need today.

Of course, he conveniently forgot to mention that the Inquisition in Spain learned most of its “conversion” techniques from the Muslim overlords. Who practiced them with fervor on Christians, Jews, and anybody else who didn’t measure up to their standards of piety.

I was, however, genuinely surprised when I recently leafed through a book titled The History of Torture by Daniel P. Mannix. Published in paperback by Dell in 1962, it was just what it says on the cover; a historical record of torture techniques used from ancient times on down to the then-present. The reason? It was published as part of the United Nations Convention on Human Rights, which at that time was attempting to convince national governments to agree to a ban on such measures. Yes, the treaty was ratified, and yes, the signatories (notably in the Second and Third Worlds) went right on doing business at the same old stand. (But oh, twas’ a famous “moral” victory, don’t you know?)

What surprised me, though, was that in the chapter on the Spanish Inquisition, waterboarding was described as one of their standard interrogation techniques. Which they learned from the Islamists of the Caliphate. Exactly as U.S. interrogators have used it.

Truly, there is nothing new under the sun. Least of all hypocrisy at The One’s level.

Then again, it could simply be ignorance. He seems a remarkably ignorant man where anything except his own fantasies are concerned.

Gratitude from Muslimdom? Ha! We’ve seen it in the past, but it rarely lasts more than ten or fifteen minutes. Let’s keep our armies strong and over here, and let’s have our dealings with the rest of the world be primarily in mutually-beneficial free trade and educational exchanges.
