Report: Tsarnaevs motivated by opposition to Iraq and Afghan wars, learned how to build bombs from Al Qaeda online magazine; Update: Bought “fireworks” in February

posted at 1:21 pm on April 23, 2013 by Allahpundit

To borrow a line from Dennis Green, they are who we thought they were.

From his hospital bed, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. The first successful large-scale bombing in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era, the Boston attack killed three people and wounded more than 250 others.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist organization.

Rather, the officials said, the evidence so far suggests they were “self-radicalized” through Internet sites and U.S. actions in the Muslim world. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has specifically cited the U.S. war in Iraq, which ended in December 2011 with the removal of the last American forces, and the war in Afghanistan, where President Obama plans to end combat operations by the end of 2014.

Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world a foreign policy priority, even as he has expanded drone operations in Pakistan and other countries, which has inflamed Muslim public opinion.

Bad news for liberal narratives in one sense, but good in another: They’ve been grasping for ways to say “it’s not them, it’s us” and now they’ve got an easy one, Obama’s stewardship of Afghanistan notwithstanding. Beats the current leading theory about Tamerlan Tsarnaev possibly having taken too many punches to the face, no?

As for how they learned to make the bombs, watch Pete Williams below. Truth, or a lie designed to throw the feds off the scent of whoever might have trained them? Well, go back to this post from last Tuesday, two days before the bombers were identified. Intelwire had already raised an eyebrow at the fact that pressure-cooker bombs were used, since there had been articles in “Inspire” on how to build that sort of device. The Jawa Report also noted that Naser Jason Abdo, the would-be Fort Hood bomber, got caught with pressure cookers and other bomb materials in his hotel room when he was pinched in 2011. Also found in the room: A copy of “Inspire.” I remember people giggling when the magazine debuted because the bomb-making instructions were entitled, “How to Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom,” but it worked. The man responsible for it, Samir Khan, is long since dead in a U.S. airstrike — but not as the primary target. He was killed by the same missile that took out his pal, Anwar al-Awlaki, whom some think came up with the idea for “Inspire.” Bottom line: Yeah, it’s quite possible that Tsarnaev’s telling the truth about how they learned bombmaking. Abdo apparently took the same path. He just never made it as far as they did.

Exit question, in the spirit of lefty fingerpointing at tea partiers: Does this mean the anti-war movement’s guilty by association?

Update: Possibly significant:

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the elder brother suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, bought two large pyrotechnic devices in February from a New Hampshire branch of a national fireworks chain, according to executives at the chain’s parent company.

William Weimer, a vice president of Phantom Fireworks, said the elder Mr. Tsarnaev on Feb. 6 purchased two “Lock and Load” reloadable mortar kits at the company’s Seabrook, N.H. store, just over the border from Massachusetts. Each kit contains a tube and 24 shells, he said. Mr. Tsarnaev paid cash for the kits, which cost $199.99 apiece.

Cops are wondering if they used the powder from the fireworks to power the bombs, but the manufacturer thinks there wasn’t enough of it in two kits to generate explosions that big. Even so, go read this Boston Globe report from late March about a mysterious series of explosions in Hanover, Massachusetts involving homemade devices and “flash powder.” Actual quote from a local cop: “It appears there is someone experimenting with making these devices.” The explosions happened on March 12 and 15; on March 20, a friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev tweeted to him that he’d heard he’d been “poppen fireworks.” Hmmmm.

Bruno Strozek on April 23, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Bottom line: Yeah, it’s quite possible that Tsarnaev’s telling the truth about how they learned bombmaking.

I don’t think the issue has been whether or not it is possible to build a bomb from instructions on the internet. Back in the 60s bomb making instructions could be found in books. Someone versed in undergrad physics and chemistry would not need instructions.

The question is were these two in particular capable of doing it and doing it reliably, and of planning and executing this attack using the bombs, without some outside help and guidance other than what they found on the internet? The question is not is it possible. It is. But does it seem likely?

Seems at a minimum they had to have built and detonated some test devices somewhere, and they had to have some idea what the potential injury radius was. The complaint filed charging the sociopath in custody states the bomb he planted went off ten seconds after he walked away from it. That’s not a huge margin for error.

farsighted on April 23, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Exit question, in the spirit of lefty fingerpointing at tea partiers: Does this mean the anti-war movement’s guilty by association?

This is something that I don’t understand entirely. The left wing in the US is consistently aligned politically with things that don’t align with fundamental islamists.

Examples where lefwting orthodoxy and islamists differ:
Liberals want gays to marry, Islamists want them stoned.

Liberals (and conservatives, although liberals wouldn’t claim so)want to protect female victims of rape, islamists want them stoned.

Liberals say women should have the “right to choose” not restricted to abortion. Think working outside the home, etc.
Islamists want men to make decisions FOR their wive(s).

Liberals have been pushing a sexual revolution for decades. Islamists see this behavior in women as an offense worthy of the death penalty.

Liberals want separation of church and state to a ridiculous extreme, islamists want a Caliphate where religion is the law of the land.

One could argue that the American left is a big part of the reason that Islamists do not like us as a people.

About the only thing they agree on is their disdain for Christianity and opposition to religous freedom.

The guest on CNN last night said there is no way they could have built the bombs from using Internet Instructions, just too complex. He had to have had some training.

Maybe they ordered a kit from the back of Inspire. I’m sure right next to the ads for sea monkeys and magic tricks there is a “Build your own pressure cooker IED!” offer.

they attacked us because of iraq, they attack russia because they want independence, they fight each other and slit each other’s throat for centuries, because…well because he looked at me funny…and tsarnaev ran over his bro with a truck, because he was in his way, so yeah…

runner on April 23, 2013 at 2:07 PM

I thought they arrived in the US in 2002 — that is to say, after the war had already started. Why go to a country at war with countries you support? That would be like American Lutherans moving to 1940 Britain and then setting off bombs to kill Brits because they were fighting the Germans.

Obviously American actions in Iraq and Afghanistan didn’t bother someone in the family too much — until it became a convenient scapegoat to blame them for the brothers’ Islamic-fueled violence.

Would you feel threatened if someone did? I bet you do; I expected you would comment. Snark tends to elude you, it seems.

The LSM left no stone unturned in quests to find a Tea Party member or the whole bunch of us culpable in some way for every violent act since 9/11/01. That’s what passes for ‘investigative journalism’ from the LSM.

Liam on April 23, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Seems at a minimum they had to have built and detonated some test devices somewhere, and they had to have some idea what the potential injury radius was. The complaint filed charging the sociopath in custody states the bomb he planted went off ten seconds after he walked away from it. That’s not a huge margin for error.

farsighted on April 23, 2013 at 2:03 PM

I agree that if this was there first attempt/detonation – they they were damn successful amateurs.
Of course, unfortunately…as some have pointed out…it seems this isn’t something that requires much skill or intellect.

Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world a foreign policy priority, even as he has expanded drone operations in Pakistan and other countries, which has inflamed Muslim public opinion.

And the WaPo starts the first round of ass-covering.

Let me interpret. Mr Obama will keep up his Muslim charm offensive, which includes people like the MB, et al. Meanwhile, the Middle East becomes more radicalized, hotbeds of extremism like Chechnya pump out more extremist like these two terrorists and more Americans get killed as a result.

This administrations policies are completely in spite of the evidence which suggests that unless we acquiesce and radically change our culture, to be more like theirs, they will continue to kill Americans. Period. And Mr. Obama and his cabinet have ignored that to our collective peril.

What’s happen here is that Mr. Obama’s policies, including immigration, war prosecution and legal strategy for dealing with terrorists has put Americans in more danger.

Oh, and in case you missed it- it’s not Mr. Obama’s fault. But when is it ever?

We may never know. I hope it still is those white Al-Q guys. This isn’t fair to Islam.

burrata on April 23, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Really? You’re asking this???

The narrative is built around the bombing because the administration has decided to sell it as a couple of nutjobs who did harm. The Boston Marathon bombing had nothing to do with Islam, Chechnya, or terrorism. Repeat that as many times as you need to get the “J” word out of your vocabulary.

And for the record there hasn’t been one instance of Jihad on American soil since January 2009. Not one. Fort Hood was work-related violence even with Nadal Hassan screaming Allah Akbah as he gunned down 13 and injured 30. That recruiting station killing was an anti-war protest and not Islamic terrorism. And, as I posted above, last Monday’s bombing had absolutely nothing to do with Islam.

Can someone put me some knowledge? Can I buy me a keg of gunpowder at an gun shop if I want to load my own? Not a keg really, but whatever it comes in. I noticed a webpage where you can order what looks like plastic jars of powder for like $12 per bottle. Is it easy or hard to do this in say PA? Would you need to show ID or something?

I think with something like this, it would be foolish not to consider amongst the likelihoods both DT/Christian Identify types AND violent jihadists. You know, folks who have openly espoused and carried out violent acts here.
If it makes you feel better, I really don’t think anyone has concerns about the Tea Party. You seem to align Timothy McVeigh or Eric Rudolph types there. I certainly wouldn’t.

I don’t buy that they were motivated by the Iraq and Afgahn wars. Sounds like he was just regurgitating a lefty talking point more than anything else.

changer1701 on April 23, 2013 at 1:52 PM

I agree. If they had a beef about the wars, why not attack a government target instead of a sporting event.

Bitter Clinger on April 23, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Yeah, that. Also, why now, when both wars are winding down? These two were radicalized by Islamic extremism, which latches onto anything as justification for terror.

What is it with these BABY pictures of Tsarnaev??!! Use pictures of how he looks NOW! He is not a BABY anymore – he grew up and is responsible for his actions and his religion!

Michael73501 on April 23, 2013 at 2:04 PM

I had the same thought. And I have the perfect picture for them to use. A still from the video that apparently exists showing Tsarnaev putting that IED down three feet behind an eight-year-old.

BTW, I don’t know how solid the reporting is on what this bastard is and isn’t saying but I can’t help but notice there hasn’t been any reports of remorse for having killed and injured so many innocent people.
