Two U.S. officials: Preliminary evidence suggests bombers motivated by religion, acted alone; Update: Came from Tsarnaev; Update: Learned bombmaking from Internet

posted at 7:21 pm on April 22, 2013 by Allahpundit

It’s just “preliminary” evidence. Could be that Tamerlan, when he wasn’t busy favoriting Chechen jihadist videos on YouTube, was building up an explosive hatred of marathons.

This AP story is actually newsy, not because of the conclusion officials have drawn but because of how they drew it:

Two U.S. officials say preliminary evidence from an interrogation suggests the suspects in the Boston Marathon attack were motivated by religion but were apparently not tied to any Islamic terrorist groups.

The two ethnic Chechen brothers practiced Islam.

The U.S. officials spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

Whose interrogation? If they got it from a family member, that’s not news. More than one has already talked to reporters about Tamerlan becoming more religious over the last few years. If they got it from Dzhokhar, obviously that’s big news. Stay tuned.

The NYT has a transcript of today’s bedside magistrate hearing. I knew they’d given him the Miranda warnings but it turns out he got the deluxe version. On page 4, the magistrate warns him three times that he doesn’t have to talk to police. He has a lawyer now too, so let me clip this part in anticipation of the next round of moral peacocking about how they’re denying him access to counsel, etc:

tsa

Via Mediaite, here’s a possible lead from CNN. Tamerlan Tsarnaev posted a video last year of a Chechen jihadi who operated out of Dagestan, the same region that Tsarnaev visited in 2012. The Chechen was killed by Russian forces last year. Was the clip inspiration or something more?

Update: Just thinking out loud: It’s possible, although improbable, that Dzhokhar might not know the full extent of Tamerlan’s training, if there was any. That’s not to exculpate him in any way — obviously, if the complaint filed today is true, he knew he was setting off bombs — but it may be that Tamerlan was in touch with people in Dagestan and then trained Dzhokhar over here with whatever expertise he picked up there.

Update: Newsy:

Update: Here’s why the feds are saying that they think the Tsarnaevs acted alone:

I posted this morning and I mean it. Every low-life leftist lawyer would kill to have this client. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is poised to be as much of a media darling as Mumia Abu-Jamal or Bradley Manning. That there is video dropping his bomb next to an eight-year-old only adds to the excitement among the left.

If the Tsarnaev brothers were motivated by religion can we draw certain conclusions about the religion of peace?

I looooove the “acted alone” qualifier.

Maybe they committed the bombing alone, but they received some type of help from somewhere.

Islam simply provided the motivation.

Kinda like communists. How much diff does it make whether they were home-grown, lone wolf commies or commies from the USSR? Radical Islam, like communism, is an ideology out to defeat western civilization, and the rest matters not much in comparison.

petefrt on April 22, 2013 at 7:53 PM

You notice that the media are substituting the conveniently generic “religion” for Islam.
The idea is to subtly imply that the murderous Jihadists are no worse than any other sect and that all religion is foolishly radicalizing.
Not like ,you know, the sublime ,rational, enlightened mind set of dogmatic secularism -the sanctioned philosophy of the left-media hive.

On Nov. 29, he wrote:

BL@KBIRD on April 22, 2013 at 8:27 PM

The main point of what Beck found out was that the Saudi was classified as a 212 3B. It seems as though the “3B” part is what’s most important. That tag is assigned to a “threat” (eg the Saudi) by the NTC with an “event file”. That tag can only be assigned to a person when all counter-terrorism agencies agree to assign it. The Saudi kid was assigned the tag 212 3B specifically in relation to the BOston bombing. Beck has a copy of that assignment and has sent it to 6 congressional members which resulted in the House intell committee to ask Janet Nap. for a classified meeting.

Weight of Glory on April 22, 2013 at 8:28 PM

(do I really need the sarc tag)

gophergirl on April 22, 2013 at 8:28 PM

The next interesting part concerning what Beck found out, is that the 212 3B tag can only be taken off by either the Director of the NTC or a high official in the State Dept. Beck doesn’t know how it was removed, but it was removed the next day. Such a short timeline between the assignment of the 3B status to the removal is highly unusual, according to Beck’s sources.

I have less and less confidence that our federal law enforcement will give us straight answers. They back tracked on the Saudi National, and after asking a few questions, they can conclude that these 2 terrorists woke up one day and decided to be murderers. Who supplied them with guns and ammo? Where did the young one get his spending money. It seems like all the older one did was train in mixed martial arts.

booger71 on April 22, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Here’s what Beck said in conclusion, GG:

“Wednesday at 5:35 p.m. the file is altered,” Beck said. “This is unheard of, this is impossible in the timeline due to the severity of the charge….You don’t one day put a 212 3B charge against somebody with deportation, and then the next day take it off. It would require too much to do it.”

“There are only two people that could revoke the deportation order — the director of the NTC could do it after speaking with each department, the FBI, the ATC, etc. — which is impossible to do in such a short period of time, — or, somebody at the very highest levels of the State Department could do it. We don’t have any evidence to tell you which one did it,” Beck said.

I said house intell committee, I meant Homeland Sec. comm.
