Three shot at Denver pot rally

posted at 11:01 am on April 21, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

This was pretty easy to overlook given The Week That Was, but there was some sort of marijuana based celebration going on yesterday, marking the date of 4/20. (If you really care why that number is associated with smoking pot, there’s a brief history of it here.) This year was particularly notable for herb enthusiasts in Colorado, where recreational use of the drug by people over the age of 21 was legalized this year. This confluence apparently led to the scheduling of a major rally, music festival and speech making opportunity this weekend. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out to be all peace, love and flowers.

Three people were shot and wounded at a pro-marijuana rally on Saturday, disrupting the first celebration of a symbolic drug culture holiday since Colorado voters legalized the recreational use of pot.

A man and a woman were each shot in the leg and a youth was grazed by a bullet, but the wounds were not life-threatening, Denver police said on Twitter. Officers were looking for two suspects in the shootings, which occurred as the rally was winding down.

“I heard five or six gunshots in quick succession,” said Cole Wagenknecht, 27, who attended the rally at a downtown park near the State Capitol. “That’s why I knew it wasn’t fireworks. Then everybody started to scatter and ran toward one end of the park.”

This is one of those stories with the potential to turn into an entire political circus on its own, with not only drug legalization, but guns, police surveillance, state rights vs federal control… the list goes on. But given the near total lack of facts and details, there’s not much to go on here. They haven’t identified the shooter(s) at this point, so we have no way of knowing if it was some violent supporter of legalization, some opponent looking to attack the hippies, or just a guy who felt he was sold a bag of sub-standard product.

In any event, here’s the video report so you can draw your own conclusions.

I’d bet that if they ran blood tests on all people arrested for shooting people, at least 95% would have marijuana in their system. A statistic like that would never see the light of day. They could argue that correlation is not causation, but they’d still have to explain the correlation.

Most articles leave out information about the suspect, I wonder why.

Police now say they are looking for two men. They described the first shooter as a light complexioned black man, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants and a Carolina blue baseball cap.

The second person was described as a black man in a checkered black and white shirt. Jackson didn’t have a description of that suspect’s height and weight.

If they were white neo-Nazis, or wearing NRA teeshirts that would have been the lede.

Why would we be conflicted? Didn’t Colorado just pass some amazingly tough gun control laws? Unlike you, we are sorry when anyone get shot. What will be interesting is, are the guns legal and if not will they be prosecuted for that on top of the other charges. Holder doesn’t seem to like prosecuting gun violations.

Democrats: “Pot is a gateway drug to gun violence”

Washington Fancy on April 21, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Money and the beautiful light under the basket.

Who paid for this gathering?

Mr. Soros was negative about gold recently but claims he hasn’t been riding it down. He has written about pot legalization.

Meantime, Warren Buffet’s son or brother is a big open border fan. They may be trying to work a financial play from the Mexican government or goodness knows what.

Finally, after my kudos to our Vice President on his recent charity donations, I got a poison note from a Republican which made it VERY CLEAR that Mitt and several others dwarf the Dems charity. Well, guys, praise you but I knew that. Maybe you should spend some $$$$ on the LSM telling others!

I get XOM stock alerts and coincidentally got THREE emails from them on their 2012 huge charity gifts. They have a three to one match for one school and give piles to other places. My hint for them is to hit a round figure and let us know ASAP after the books are closed. The latest I could find was $234 million from the foundation in 2011.

I read their stuff.

If I gave away almost a quarter billion dollars , plus employee activities, Mr. Tillotson, it wouldn’t take a year for the news to hit the web.

libfreeordie on April 21, 2013 at 1:16 PM

Colorado sure did open a can of worms with that vote to legalize pot. They’re still arguing in the legislature about how to determine if someone is driving under the influence. It seems there is no usable field sobriety or breath test for pot, and a blood test without consent or court order is illegal. Ye reap what ye have sown.

No need to buy from gangsta street thugs anymore.

If you are stupid enough to buy sh*t that alters your state of mind from strangers do you not think criminals will want to hang out with you and separate you from your possessions blah blah blah

i was only implying that i have used recreational drugs- not that i still use them or ever bought any thing from a stranger so this blathering makes absolutely no sense- it’s a ‘stupid’ supposition on your part as to whether or not i support the legalization of drugs. and i rather think i have no comment considering your oafishness.

my point was obviously and only that drugs are associated with dangerous criminals- and i know this through personal experience. period. so the shooting should not be entirely a surprise-exactly what your um ‘point’ seems to be besides twisting exactly what i said back into what i said as an excuse to insult me.

my own father was a drug dealer and not a stranger- and my grandfather was a cop- so i have rather a unique up close and personal perspective on and connection to the drug trade.
