More arrests in Boston bombing case? Update: KDKA report confirming Mirror account?

posted at 11:31 am on April 21, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

The death of one suspected bomber and the capture of the other on Friday in the Boston Marathon bombing may not be the end of arrests in the case.  Yesterday afternoon, FBI and DHS agents arrived at the same New Bedford apartment complex where they had detained three people in the Friday manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, this time taking two away in handcuffs:

Agents wearing FBI and Department of Homeland Security jackets detained two men at the Hidden Brook apartment complex just hours after releasing three people believed to be associated with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

A neighbor who declined to identify herself said the same two men were among the three people taken into custody by the FBI Friday afternoon.

An FBI spokeswoman could not provide any information on the two men, both of whom were led away in handcuffs around 3:50 p.m. Saturday, or anything related to the apartment, citing the “ongoing” nature of the investigation.

Interestingly, this time the FBI and DHS didn’t come alone.  A consular vehicle from an unidentified  nation also arrived, and transported two women out of the complex after the arrests took place:

Earlier Saturday afternoon, a silver mini-van with consulate license plates arrived at the Carriage Drive apartment along with the FBI and Homeland Security, and stayed a half an hour longer than the agents.

The van left with two women, neither of whom appeared to be restrained. One was carrying a pink backpack as she exited the apartment and ran into the van, which sped away as the women told reporters they did not wish to comment.

We noted the brief detention of two men and a woman on Friday afternoon, but the FBI left after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was apprehended in Watertown.  The police told the Standard-Times on Friday that the two men were believed to be fellow students at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror in the UK reports that the FBI is investigating the possibility that the Tsarnaev brothers were part of a “sleeper cell” in the US that could contain a dozen operatives:

The FBI was last night hunting a 12-strong terrorist “sleeper cell” linked to the Boston marathon bomb brothers.

Police believe Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were specially trained to carry out the devastating attack.

More than 1,000 FBI operatives were last night working to track down the cell and arrested a man and two women 60 miles from Boston in the hours before Dzhokhar’s dramatic capture after a bloody shootout on Friday.

A source close to the investigation said: “We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated and not the kind of thing people learn from Google.

“They were too advanced. Someone gave the brothers the skills and it is now our job to find out just who they were. Agents think the sleeper cell has up to a dozen members and has been waiting several years for their day to come.”

It’s important to keep in mind that the FBI will be investigating all sorts of possibilities in connection to the attack.  The travel pattern of Tamerlan Tsarnaev provides the potential for significant contact with radicals in Dagestan and Chechnya, but those contacts have yet to be established.  Until the FBI and intelligence agencies find those contacts and develop those leads, they will keep all potential theories in play.

Speaking of which, House Intelligence chair Mike Rogers told NBC’s Meet the Press that Tamerlan may have traveled to Russia using an alias:

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday that when Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect killed Friday in a shootout with police, travelled to Russia in 2012, he may have done so under an alias.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s six-month stay in Russia last year “becomes extremely important” as a key to the investigation of the Boston bombings, Rogers told NBC’s David Gregory. His visit to Russia “would lead one to believe that that’s probably where he got that final radicalization to push him to commit acts of violence and where he may have received training” in terrorist techniques. Rogers, a former FBI agent, said the FBI had questioned Tamerlan Tsarnaev after being given information from a foreign intelligence service “that they were concerned about his possible radicalization.” …

But appearing on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., said Tamerlan Tsarnaev is the kind of person “you don’t want to let out of your sight,” and that it was a mistake for federal authorities to have lost track of him.

“Either our laws are insufficient or the FBI failed, but we’re at war with radical Islamists and we need to up our game,” the South Carolina Republican told CNN.

How did we find out so quickly about Tamerlan’s travels, though, if he traveled under an alias?  Or did the FBI keep closer track of Tsarnaev than Lindsey Graham thinks?

Although Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains in serious condition, officials plan to charge him in federal court quickly, perhaps as soon as today:

Federal officials hope to bring charges against Dzokhar Tsarnaev as early as today, a Department of Justice official tells CNN’s Pamela Brown.

A law enforcement official tells CNN that Tsarnaev might be arraigned at the hospital. The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing remains in serious, stable condition, under heavy guard at a Boston hospital. A judge is coming to his bedside.

Once charged in civil criminal court, options for investigators begin to narrow considerably in regard to interrogation.  It’s possible that they have already found what they wanted from the surviving Tsarnaev brother, which may be why FBI, DHS, and a consular van reappeared at the New Bedford apartment complex.

Update: The agents arrived yesterday afternoon, not last night.  I’ve corrected that in the first paragraph.

Update: The New York Daily News has photos of the two men, and report that they have been detained on “immigration violations”:

Two foreign nationals — who are believed to be associates of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers — were arrested Saturday on immigration violations, authorities said.

The men, identified by neighbors as 19-year-olds from Kazakhstan, drove around in a black BMW with the mock license plate, “TERRORISTA #1.”

The pair was hauled out of their New Bedford apartment in handcuffs about 3:50 p.m. The raid was carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, a spokesman told the Daily News.

Immigration violations from Kazakhstan? Those don’t usually require a consular van to collect associates. This is still a fluid situation and this lead may end up being nothing at all, so keep an open mind. The fact that federal investigators returned the next day and diplomatic intervention was required indicates that this is something a little more serious than a visa violation, or at least is suspected of being so.

Update: Bear in mind that this could still be (relatively) unrelated to the bombing.  The FBI may have identified Tsarnaev’s associates and detained them on Friday to get more intel on their fugitive, and then discovered an immigration issue either during or shortly after their interrogation.  Given the nature of the larger case, they may have alerted the consulate to get involved immediately and accelerated the processing of the immigration issue to get them out of the way.  That’s at least a possibility, so again, keep an open mind.

Update: Looks like KDKA has heard what the Mirror reported earlier:

Stay, er, tuned.

Update: Dzhokhar isn’t saying much, at least not verbally:

Mayor Thomas Menino wondered aloud earlier today whether he’d ever be able to talk with investigators.  Let’s hope that doctors make that happen as soon as possible.

And this clown wants to legalize thousands of OTM’s who came across our border with Mexico.

Do you know what an OTM is?? See page 28-29.

The number of aliens other than Mexican (“OTMs”) illegally crossing the border has grown at an alarming rate over the past several years. Based on U.S. Border Patrol statistics there were 30,147 OTMs apprehended in FY2003, 44,614 in FY2004, 165,178 in FY2005, and 108,025 in FY2006. Most of them were apprehended along the U.S. Southwest border.

The sheer increase of OTMs coming across the border makes it more difficult for Border Patrol agents to readily identify and process each, thereby increasing the chances that a potential terrorist could slip through the system. Moreover, there is no concrete mechanism for determining how many OTMs evade apprehensions and successfully enter the country illegally.

Since September 11, 2001 to the present hundreds of illegal aliens from special interest countries (such as Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Cuba, Brazil, Ecuador, China, Russia, Yemen, Albania, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan) were apprehended within the South Texas region alone.

The data indicates that each year hundreds of illegal aliens from countries known to harbor terrorists or promote terrorism are routinely encountered and apprehended attempting to enter the U.S. illegally between Ports of Entry. Just recently, U.S. intelligence officials report that seven Iraqis were found in Brownsville, Texas in June 2006.

In August 2006, an Afghani man was found swimming across the Rio Grande River in Hidalgo, Texas;104 as recently as October 2006, seven Chinese were apprehended in the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas.105

From a speech by Gov. Perry dated 2005…

“I am here today to discuss my border security plan.

And while at first blush it may seem strange that I have come to San Angelo to discuss the border, no one should be mistaken about the fact that San Angelo is deeply affected by border enforcement…
…or the lack thereof.

In the first seven months of this year, 119,000 illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico have been apprehended and released onto Texas streets with nothing more than an order to return for a deportation hearing.

Most never show…

In recent weeks, the Border Patrol has begun sending OTM’s on buses to San Angelo, releasing on the streets of this city individuals which we know little…if anything…about.

But this we do know:

First, Al Qaeda and other terrorist and criminal organizations view our porous border with Mexico as an opportunity to import terror, narcotics and weapons of mass destruction.

Second, dangerous gangs like MS-13…which is a violent Salvadoran gang that began operating in Los Angeles in the 1980’s…have begun operating on both sides of the Texas border.

And third, intelligence and law enforcement reports indicate that OTM’s caught…
…and those who have eluded our capture…
…include illegal immigrants from countries with a known Al Qaeda presence…
…such as Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Triborder region of South America – Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

The lack of enforcement of our border laws is a great danger not just to border citizens, but to all Americans.

In this post 9-11 era, there is no such thing as homeland security without border security.

From Brownsville to El Paso, our border offers convenient and covert points of entry without discrimination…
…to both those who seek the opportunities of freedom and those who seek to destroy them.

To be clear, enforcement of our border laws is the responsibility of the federal government…
…but the consequences of inaction are suffered by border states and localities….”

Reading up on Chechnya, I learned that Umarov (an Armenian) is the current leader of the Islamists in charge in Chechnya. He is known as the Russian Bin Laden. Reportedly, he is primarily funded by the Wahhabists/Sunnis/Saudis.

According to white hat’s mother, he was being dogged by the CIA for five years, which predates Russia’s request for the U.S. to investigate his terrorist ties in 2011. And after supposedly investigating him, the FBI determined he wasn’t a threat and was no longer on our radar. Was he instead being dogged by Russian (pro Shia/anti Sunni interests) all that time?

Why did the FBI ask the public to identify him when they clearly knew who he was – and later acknowledged they did? Why were we reticent to follow Sunni connections between white hat and Chechnya?

For a long time I have noticed this administration’s support of Sunni/Saudi vs. Shia interests. The deep bow to the Saudi sheikh, reluctance to off Bin Laden, ‘al qaeda’s on the run and is no longer a threat’, support of Sunni ME countries and clear lack of support of those with Shia led regimes like Iran, Assad in Syria (instead we are funding al qaeda ‘insurgents’), the overthrow of Gaddafi in Libya (who offed the prior Shia leader and was over time an enemy to Sunni led countries). . . etc.

Why did we interrogate the Saudi and then let him go? Why did Mooch visit him? Are we covering up (again) Saudi/Sunni/Wahhabist connections?

I have many questions.

“Boston Bombers Mother A 9/11 Truther, Thinks Government Carried It Out To Make Muslims Look Bad…

In my last year of college I was getting a facial from her, and asking her about why she had originally come to the United States with her family about eight or ten years previously.

She told me that she and her husband had been lawyers and political activists in Russia. They had fled the country after “something that her husband did.” Her daughter had recently been divorced at this time, and her daughter’s ex-husband had taken their child to Russia, refusing to return him. Finally the child was returned.

When my mom asked Zubeidat how they had gotten the child back, she told her that “my [Zubeidat’s] husband is crazy” and everyone knew it. When he threatened the daughter’s ex-husband’s family, they returned the child.

During this facial session she started quoting a conspiracy theory, telling me that she thought 9-11 was purposefully created by the American government to make America hate Muslims. “It’s real,” she said, “My son knows all about it. You can read on the internet.”

Have no idea what you’re reading, but Doku Umarov is certainly CHECHEN. If you’d know anything about surnames in that region just the ending of the surname (ov) is Chechen, not even going to point out that Doku is a Chechen name as well. Look at KadyrOV, as that state’s leader as one example.

Look at most surnames that end in “ian/yan” as Armenian. As in Khachaturian, Uvezyan, etc.

Take it from someone who lived in Soviet Union among these people. And get some new sources to read.

UPDATE (2:51 PM EDT): The Daily Mail reports that Russia asked the FBI to investigate Tamerlan Tsarnaev six months ago. The FBI never responded to Russia’s request. Even more disturbingly, the Mail reports, “The 26-year-old Chechen, who was living in the U.S. after being granted refugee status in 2002, first caught the eye of authorities after he was spotted meeting with a person involved in the militant Islamic underground movement in Dagestan. They met at a mosque on six occasions, the source said. The source told NBC the militant and Tsarnaev disappeared before authorities could speak with them; they added that the FBI never responded. A senior law enforcement official said that the FBI’s earlier investigation did not turn up anything and they did not have the legal authority to keep tabs on him.”

Looks as though the Daily Mail is on the case too. Good.

What is different between you INSULTING CHRISTIANS, who suffered genocide at the hands of muslims, same way LSM has been insulting TEA Party, via non-existent associations and YOU have yet to apologize for your INSULT.

But never mind, you were just “connecting the dots”. Do everyone a favor and do not connect the dots.

And an apology would go a long way. First thing you should have done.

The FBI came before the cameras for all the world to see on Wednesday and asked for the public to assist in identifying white hat and black hat. That is when they provided photos and the video.

The FBI has acknowledged on their own web site that they interviewed white hat in response to a foreign government’s request to do so (see above FBI link in this thread) and determined he wasn’t a threat. Clearly they knew who he was all along.

I thought it was black hat (Tamerlan) whom had been in contact with the FBI. Either way, why should it be assumed that the suspects in the pictures/video were already known to be the same as the person they had contact with a few years back?

You’re right, it was black hat they interviewed. Sorry I misspoke earlier.

If the FBI did an investigation on him – and they did – they had to have had a file on him with photographs, etc. As part of their research re locals with known/suspected terrorist connections, how could they have missed this file? Unless their own facial recognition techniques or research is less than competent.

How soon we forget…from October of 2011:

Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole declared Wednesday at a conference in Washington that he had “recently directed all components of the Department of Justice to re-evaluate their training efforts in a range of areas, from community outreach to national security.” This “reevaluation” will remove all references to Islam in connection with any examination of Islamic jihad terror activity. The Obama Administration has now placed off-limits any investigation of the beliefs, motives and goals of jihad terrorists.

Dwight C. Holton, former U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, emphasized that training materials for the FBI would be purged of everything politically incorrect: “I want to be perfectly clear about this: training materials that portray Islam as a religion of violence or with a tendency towards violence are wrong, they are offensive, and they are contrary to everything that this president, this attorney general and Department of Justice stands for. They will not be tolerated.”

This is particularly true when one factors in their ‘misses’ on Fort Hood and other events – aside from pretending to the world that Islamic terrorists don’t even exist to begin with and are just episodes of workplace violence.

But I also question this level of incompetence in multiple terrorist attacks. That is why I threw out ‘larger’ issues related to U.S. foreign policy with respect to the Sunni/Shia angle which may be woven into this as well. I don’t know. That’s why I posed the above questions.

Now this is interesting…

Just went to check the latest Gallup data on Dear Leader’s Job Approval Daily Tracking. Since April 15th, his numbers have barely moved at all. Last Monday he was at 49%, and that bumped up to 51% in the 2 days after the bombing. In the latest 3 day cycle ending Saturday, it was 53%. So basically, his Job Approval has remained within Gallup’s own Margin of Error since this happened. It will be fascinating to see how the other “polls”, which have also been stuck between 47% and 50% since January, will reflect Gallup’s trend.

Back in 2001, right after the original 9/11, Chimpy Bush saw his Job Approval rocket up between 31 and 35 points in 4 days.

O’bama’s only choice? Blame 4/15 on Bush.

If this happens again anytime soon, say in the next year, year and half, eventually there will be a tipping point. At some point, it will be too much and people will hopefully wake up. At least – I hope so. I can’t believe if this happens too many more times there won’t be SOME PEOPLE who will catch a clue.

Today, on FB – a person I know was blasting Romney. Wanted to know where he was and why he wasn’t more visible. I told her he went to the memorial service last week and probably didn’t want to inject himself into the situation. She came back with “well, I did some research and he was on CNN and made a somewhat nice statement, but it wasn’t enough to her way of thinking.” Can you even believe that? Here we have a terrorist situation, on Obama’s watch and she is mad at Romney because he isn’t front and center somehow, as if all the libs in Massachusetts would let him! They are mad and mean and sick. It makes me shake my head.
