Sen. Murphy: Republicans are just gun-control Darwinists at this point

posted at 1:21 pm on April 18, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Uhm… nailed it?

I guess I appreciate the honesty of the Republican caucus. They’ve just made it clear that they are just kind of gun-control Darwinists at this point. They just think that we should give a whole bunch of guns to the good guys and to the bad guys and let them shoot it out, and hope that the good guys win. That’s their agenda, and a lot of that was made plain today.

Well, that was a feisty enough bit of demagoguery to rival some of President Obama‘s preferred tactics. I’m pretty sure that the the good guys and bad guys just “shooting it out” and cavalierly hoping that the good guys win isn’t what Republicans have in mind in their gun-rights agenda, but in fact want to make sure the good guys are armed as a robust means of deterrence for the bad guys who are armed anyway — which on net balance would lead to less violence, not more. It’s already illegal for criminals to have guns, and as Sen. Jim Inhofe put it, most of yesterday’s legislation was “predicated on one assumption that somehow we think that the criminal element will single out this one law to comply with.” While Democrats are insistently laying claim to some sort of corner on “common sense” when it comes to gun rights, the legislation was not a solution for the problems it professed to be trying to solve; and if you’re trying to substantively move the debate in your direction, I doubt that these kinds of flippant misrepresentations of the opposition’s motives are going to help.

ToddPA on April 18, 2013 at 1:28 PM

The murder rate in the US is down 50% over the past 20 years.

The violent crime rate in the US is 1/8 the violent crime rate of places with much stricter gun control such as the UK.

The places with the highest rates of murders and violent crimes in the US are the places with the strictest gun control.

Ironically, the places with the strictest gun control laws are also the places with the least enforcement of those very same laws when they are broken.

The net impact is to disarm the rank and file citizen while looking the other way to criminal use of firearms.

What problem are they trying to solve? They have come right out and said point blank that none of these changes would prevent nightmares such as Newtown.

While Democrats are insistently laying claim to some sort of corner on “common sense” when it comes to gun rights, the legislation was not a solution for the problems it professed to be trying to solve

Harry Reid and the rat-eared coward needed few GOP votes to pass the gun-grabbing legislation and they failed. More member of the majority party voted against than members of the minority party voted for. What does this say about the common sense argument.

Bishop on April 18, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Yes, because only government should be in the position to defend everyone against bad guys….it isn’t the job of a concerned citizen to take the law into his or her own hands. And of course our government should be the one and only prime authority of who should be defined as “bad guys”, not the uninformed person on the street.

OhEssYouCowboys on April 18, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Note to Senator Murphy!
You’re not in Congress any longer ToTo! You’re in the Senate, where the discourse is usually more civil. If you insist on bringing your Nancy Pelosi, Looney-Tune rhetoric to the Senate, you could find that there isn’t enough money in Bridgeport to ensure your re-election.

I’m sure the citizens of the enlightened cities of Chicago and Detroit can attest to the wisdom of gun control.

They just think that we should give a whole bunch of guns to the good guys and to the bad guys and let them shoot it out, and hope that the good guys win.

Foolishness… of course both sides already have guns. So that’s where we are.

What is your solution? Oh yes, disarm those who will follow the law (the good guys) and then let them shoot it out.

In what strategic analysis is disarming only one side a benefit tot he side being disarmed?

Or… if you have a way to pass a law that you believe criminals will follow. Why not outlaw murder and be done with it.

If you pass a murder law that can’t be broken who cares who has guns?

Here’s the real problem Senator.

Your party leadership is filled with Americanized Communists called Democrats. And they want to ignore this.

As passed by the Congress:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

And YOUR current leader believes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkpdNtTgQNM

That the Constitution should be about what the government can do FOR YOU (to you), not that you need to be protected from the tyranny of the Federal government.

Listen to the audio of his own words Senator.

PappyD61 on April 18, 2013 at 1:39 PM

And it has become clear that the Dems are whiney anti-gun liars who see this as a baby step in their agenda to get rid of all those “mean hurtful” guns. All that violence scares them – they’d rather sit in their nice homes and naively think the police will show up in time to protect them.

Senate Buddies.

http://time100.time.com/2013/04/18/time-100/slide/tom-coburn/

Tom Coburn
U.S. Senator, 65
By Barack Obama April 18, 2013

Tom Coburn and I don’t always agree on the issues. In fact, on the surface, we seem pretty different. I grew up in Hawaii; he grew up in Oklahoma. I’m trying to keep up with two daughters at home; Tom has already raised three.
But after we entered the Senate at the same time, our wives, Michelle and Carolyn, hit it off at an orientation dinner. Pretty soon, we did too. Since then, we’ve bonded over family and faith. And we’ve harnessed our friendship and mutual respect to find places where we can agree and work together to move this country forward.

We co-sponsored the “Google for Government” act, which made government more transparent and more accountable to the American people. We worked together to cut down on earmarks. And we continue to agree on the need to reduce wasteful spending and close tax loopholes that benefit only the well-off and well connected.

The people of Oklahoma are lucky to have someone like Tom representing them in Washington — someone who speaks his mind, sticks to his principles and is committed to the people he was elected to serve.

After I took office, Tom received dozens of letters from Oklahomans complaining that we looked too close on TV. Tom’s response was “How better to influence somebody than to love them?” Each of us still hopes the other will see the light. But in the meantime we’ll settle for being friends.

If we had a free press in this country, some reporter would ask Sen. Murphy, what, specifically in this bill, would have prevented Sandy Hook, so he could tell the parents he was parading around how good it would have been for THEIR children, if this law had been in place. Alas, we’re stuck with Pravda and Izvestia.

bflat879 on April 18, 2013 at 1:47 PM

Instead of worrying about the 280MM+ guns in the hands of 80MM+ law-abiding gun-owners, it would seem an easier task to round up and incarcerate – with treatment – the probably less than a million (probably just a fraction of that) nut cases like Loughner, Lanza, Holmes, and Cho.
Plus, if you have such a fixation on guns Senator, perhaps you should seek “professional help” also.

That line from this column in the UK’s Daily Telegraph caught my attention too, as did the writer’s final paragraph:

Whatever your position on gun control, yesterday’s events are a damning indictment of Obama’s presidency – a flash of style, lots of soaring rhetoric and, when the votes are actually counted, little show for any of it. America has four more years of this lame-duck president telling them that it has let him down. If only he could tear up the Constitution and rule by diktat he might save himself a little disappointment. Alas, American democracy is a stickler for rules.

Michelle: “Well you can hardly blame him. He’s up for re-election in 2014.”

O: “I’m not done. I had to dodge my first question on Gosnell.”

Michelle: “Uh oh.”

O: “It gets even worse! CBS News reports there are now multiple whistleblowers stepping forward on Benghazi.”

Michelle: “Sorry, but you knew the truth about Obamacare & Benghazi would come out eventually.”

dentarthurdent on April 18, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Bad choice of metaphors, champ.

The only folks *giving* guns to *anyone* – and it was ONLY TO THE BAD GUYS – is *your* f*cking chief and his head nimrod over at Justice, m’kay?

You really want to go down this path, f*ckwit?

Midas on April 18, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Ya – so when are we supposed to get these free guns for the big shootout?
I guess I’ve been a real dumb@ss actually using my own money to get these things…..

You’ll have to wait until a republican is back in the White House.

Dems = free phones
Repubs = free guns

Fazman on April 18, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Paula Priesse says she had a mic in the Obama’s bedroom last night:

Michelle: “BaaaaaaRAAAACK…….!”

O: (Hides w/ Reggie in little room off Oval Office) “SSSH, she’ll never look for us in here.”

itsnotaboutme on April 18, 2013 at 1:52 PM

I think it probably started out more along those lines.

Murphy is living proof that Darwin was wrong about evolution.

Bishop on April 18, 2013 at 1:23 PM

He is proof that our laws evidently interfere with Darwin, as our laws protect the least fittest and allow them to survive thrive…especially in politics.

hawkeye54 on April 18, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Well you have a point. 50,000 years ago Murphy would now be nothing but a pile of gnawed bones while his clan relaxed and licked the grease from their fingers.

Bishop on April 18, 2013 at 1:33 PM

I have to agree more with hawkeye on this one. Darwin’s evolution is about adaptibility to survive and propagate.
Unfortunately, in our entitlement based society, those adapting to sitting on their butts doing nothing and living on gubmint handouts appear to be the ones reproducing the most.

At this point in human evolution, I think the best us “producers” can hope to become is either to be the brighter residents of the Idiocracy, or we become the Morlocks to the Dems’ Eloi.

Orrrrr, we can start re-introducing bears and wolves to certain urban population centers. That should put evolution back in balance. Heck, and it ought to get the greenies on our side, too. Well, until they all get eaten. ooops, shouldn’t have said that last bit out loud…..

GWB on April 18, 2013 at 3:05 PM

I thought Darwinists were supposed to be the good guys?

WryTrvllr on April 18, 2013 at 1:25 PM

As with everything the Demofreaks do and say, Darwinism is good only when they think can use it as a club against Christians, conservatives, Republicans, etc. Otherwise, being called a Darwinist becomes an insult.

Come back to Colorado Springs around Sept 11 for Dragon Man’s annual Sept 11 Memorial Machine Gun Shoot. You’d likely have a chance to shoot one of those – pay as you go. Then it will only cost you some worthless US Treasury paper – instead of more valuable food stores.

I like it! Mountain lions too!!!
What’s not to like about it? I mean, how many bullets does a lib really need to bring down a bear? But even better that the libs don’t like guns anyway.
And if we could get some of those city street corner security cams hooked into the cable network, we’d finally have something worth watching.

Ah1 The greenies should like it…return to the animals the turf from which they were driven out! Its only fair.

hawkeye54 on April 18, 2013 at 3:20 PM

I am from Sandy Hook. Murphy was our congressman before he became senator. Never did he advocate, or initiate a change in gun control laws. As congressman his big issue was ‘keep jobs in America / buy American’, that baloney. He is a typical knee jerk pandering politician, who gets re elected because its a blue state; his brain circles the airport but never lands.

Ooooooh! Licensing potential! I forgot all about that!

dentarthurdent on April 18, 2013 at 3:08 PM

Dang. I need to figure out how to pay for that. Hmmmm…. maybe I can sell my a kidney. Now… where to find someone with a kidney they don’t need……

GWB on April 18, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Why do lib-scum always read too much into everything.

1) The Second Amendment is unequivocal.
2) Guns are necessary.
3) I like guns.

Simple as that.

WhatSlushfund on April 18, 2013 at 3:41 PM

But I thought Darwinism was totally awesome. That’s what the libs tell us.

Ward Cleaver on April 18, 2013 at 3:44 PM

The thing these Dems don’t seem to understand is the bad guys do not get their guns in a legal way. They also don’t understand the word “infringe”.

But I thought Darwinism was totally awesome. That’s what the libs tell us.

Ward Cleaver on April 18, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Despite what the libs may say, I actually think Darwinism is pretty good – the basic premise being species that adapt to a changing enviroment survive, species that can’t adapt die out.

Unfortunately, our current society/environment is such that the most prolific breeders are those that have adapted far too well to gubmint entitlements. So we’ve warped the Darwinian process to some degree in favor of the dumbest, laziest, most incompetent, and least ethical of our species. But on the plus side – those people are also the most likely to have abortions and shoot each other over inner city gang/drug turf, or take themselves out of the gene pool by other Darwin Award worthy activities.

It will be interesting to see how the overall equation eventually pans out…. – Star Trek?, Idiocracy?, Time Machine (Morlocks and Eloi)?, I Robot?…

sadatoni on April 18, 2013 at 3:54 PM

And that’s the basic problem with the Dems. What they’re trying to do will disarm the good guys, and do nothing about the bad guys. If we go down their path, the good guys will have nothing to shoot back with.
