Open thread: FBI press conference on Boston bombings; Update: Photos and video added; Update: Do cops have the names? Update: New pic discovered?

posted at 4:41 pm on April 18, 2013 by Allahpundit

5 p.m. ET, all across the dial. The feds announced this morning that they’re planning to release images of the two suspects from the surveillance video sometime today. Presumably that means at the presser itself or shortly before or after; once they’re online, they’ll be posted below. A key detail via the Globe: “The official said that the two suspects were seen separately on videotape — one at each of the two bombing sites, which are located about a block apart.” That’s one thing that bothered me about the people being scrutinized in the Reddit photos. In at least two cases, the two “suspects” were standing right next to each other, conversing. If you and a partner were looking to bomb something and not get caught, rule one would/should be to avoid each other at the site itself so as not to make things easier for the cops later, right?

Speaking of which, the two guys I wrote about this morning (“White Cap” and “Track Suit”) have now been cleared by police. Track Suit turns out to be a 17-year-old kid who’s into running. That’s why he was at the marathon. While we wait for the FBI, here’s a recap in chart form of yesterday’s media meltdown over whether anyone had been arrested. Stand by for updates.

Update: Steve Emerson told Sean Hannity last night that ICE is planning to deport the Saudi national whom cops initially investigated as a person of interest in the bombing, then cleared. Per the Blaze, Emerson said it was on “national security grounds.” Other sources confirmed Emerson’s claim for the Blaze and basically allege that something suspicious is going on, not just with the Saudi but with his associates. But an ICE official told BuzzFeed this afternoon that it’s not true: The Saudi in the hospital isn’t being deported, a different Saudi national is. And that guy supposedly has nothing to do with the bombing. The Blaze later updated to note that its sources now say ICE has reconsidered and might not deport the Saudi in the hospital. How much of this is true and whether it has anything to do with the bombing is unclear at the moment, but there you go.

Update: Yep, images on the way.

Update: Fox Boston has one of the photos that the FBI’s planning to release at 5. All I can make out is the backwards white cap and the fact that the guy appears to be standing near a mailbox, possibly the same one that was seen in those photos released yesterday of a mysterious bag. If you’ve seen that guy in any of the hundreds of marathon photos floating around online, e-mail us.

Boston News, Weather, Sports | FOX 25 | MyFoxBoston

Update: The FBI’s posted multiple photos of the two suspects at its website. To my surprise, the two were together — but maybe not obviously “together” judging from the surveillance footage. The guy in the white cap, at least, looks very young, possibly even a teenager. I don’t remember them from any of the online photos I looked at yesterday but the black cap worn by the second suspect does look vaguely familiar.

Neither one drops a bag so there must be other video they’re not releasing yet.

Update: Here’s one that caught my eye a few days ago. This isn’t Black Cap, isn’t it? The pants, coat, and bag all look sort of right, but the hat seems lighter in this pic than in the vid. And there’s no white shirt here.

4c

Update: Silly mistake on my part: Ed points out via e-mail that this pic was taken after the blast, per the broken window on the right. Unless Black Cap was hanging out close by, which would be nutty, that’s not him.

Update: Someone in Reddit’s thread on this notes, apparently correctly, that Black Cap is wearing a Bridgestone golf cap.

Update: What’s that symbol on the side of White Cap’s hat? It looks like a “T” but with the right side of the letter lighter than the left side.

Update: More from the Reddit thread: White Cap might be wearing a Polo hat.

It doesn’t look like a “3″ in the side-view photo but it does in the slightly overhead surveillance video. Maybe it’s the number “7″ instead?

Update: Sure looks like a Reddit user inadvertently caught Black Cap on film — from the back, alas.

Update: From CBS:

CBS News correspondent John Miller explained why these two people are believed by the FBI to be possible suspects: “They have other video, including the one Orr referenced, where they believe they actually have on tape one of the suspects in the white baseball cap putting the bomb down in front of the Starbucks at the second location. But reason they selected the pictures we’re seeing here is they wanted to find the pictures that didn’t have the most sinister activity but the pictures that gave people the best chance of recognizing them.”

Update: Big news, if true:

Update: Some Reddit users think this pic is photoshopped but it looks legit to me. You’ve got White Cap on the far left, leaving the scene of the bombing — and there, behind him next to the lady in the pink coat, appears to be Black Cap. First fair look we’ve gotten at his face.

Update: Actually, is that Black Cap in the last pic? It’s definitely White Cap — and I don’t see his backpack, post-blast — but the white part on Black Cap’s hat might not match up to the hat in the FBI photos.

Why were these guys in close proximity after the bombings? Didn’t they plant them a block or so apart?

1 Suspect killed. Other got away. Nobody knows exactly who the guy arrested they made strip.

Suspect 1, Black Hat, pronounced dead later at hospital (“later” after the gunfight/car-as-weapon incident). He was mortally wounded on-scene, scooped up and taken to hospital, pronounced dead there (not at scene).

You are correct. I didn’t specify that the FBI was the source, just that a major network had finally linked the two/three events.

Wow, it took them a while, huh…

jimver on April 19, 2013 at 4:05 AM

It appears that FOX was reporting what was being reported to them…FBI saying “not related (suspects) to Marathon” then police said, yes, then police said, no, then FBI again denied related…

So it looks like FOX waited until they had some definitive statement about what was what. Certainly wasn’t a delay in reporting by FOX, after watching them through the night.

Lourdes on April 19, 2013 at 4:47 AM

After seeing how CNN just royally beclowned itself they’re also probably a little gunshy.

Remember the scene from “Die Hard” where the FBI guys showed up and screwed things up?

I think tonight the BPD told the “F” “B” “I” to go F#CK themselves.

Basing that on the BPD Chief holding a news conference giving the facts truth and nothing but the facts truth. He looked like he was enjoying doing it, for my money.

This Bostonian wants to give a big Screw You to all the politically correct Joe Cool Breezes who ridiculed people for admitting the obvious:

That suspect #2 was a dead ringer for Sunil Tripathi, and the fact that Tripathi was so troubled that his family thought he committed suicide and that he vanished a month before the bombing was highly suspicious

Maybe if more people had the balls to state the obvious, a cop would be alive tonight. People, including authorities, should have just said it.

Thank God for those on the internet more concerned with truth and justice instead of hurting people’s feelings.

Its Sunil Tripahti, citizens avoid him. Cops go get him.

swamp_yankee on April 19, 2013 at 5:00 AM

No way they can know at this point that the explosives were C4.

From what I read about the Marathon bombs, the experts believed they were made with low-grade explosives due to the color of the blast.

Also, if they were being supported by any organization worthy of the name, they wouldn’t have needed to stick up a 7-11 to get, what, $100? if they were lucky.

Sounds to me like they were amateur lone-wolf types who didn’t account for the likelihood that they’d be ID’ed from photos.

Latest stmt from DoJ, read on FOX minutes ago, suggesting “bombers” were “foreign…military trained”…

Since their identities are established now, that means immigrant families with their US-born child, bomber White Hat, grew up with loyalties to foreign interests who exploited White Hat’s mental/emotional illness.

Sounds familiar, unfortunately, to a few others like him who have engaged in similar evil deeds here in US against us.

jimver on April 19, 2013 at 5:12 AM

What we need to know is where Black Hat and White Hat were “military trained” (and equipped) and how they got their goods into the US…

in the case of White Hat who “disappeared” from his family’s control a month ago, leaving his IDs and credit cards behind him, where did he go and how did he do that? If he was/is “foreign military trained” then he had to have spent the last month somewhere outside the US — got out of the country and then back in without his own IDs.

Looks like Bomber Black Hat, from what’s being implied, is from some other nation recently arrived here.

All at this hour just speculation, I realize, as to their details. With one now dead, there goes the opportunity to unravel his motives, connections, associations.

But, they could have had some sudden change of plans and found themselves in sudden need of alternatives, like, say, someone was supposed to pick them up but couldn’t so they stole car/s, robbed for cash, broke into property to hide and such.

Or they could be lone wolves, you’re right. From their frantic running around and appearance of “lack of planning” after the marathon bombing, it suggests to me that they were “caught” or had some sudden, unplanned need to scramble — to hide, to plot a new escape, etc.

Bomber Suspect 2 — White Hat — almost certainly Sunil Tripathi who is a US citizen, born in US, raised here to immigrant parents, in Pennsylvania, apparently wealthy.

The other one, Suspect 1, Black Hat, now deceased, there’s been an ID published for him (Middle Eastern/Indian surname, now can’t recall it, starts with an “M”), but I am not clear on where he’s from, where he was raised.

The DoJ issued that statement saying they believe or are suggesting the Bombers were “foreign…military trained” so the Bombers could have spent the last month in another country engaged in that.

Or here in US engaged in that, some covert “foreign military” training facility, which certainly we’re told exist.

I have been listening to scanner all night. Sunil name never came up. The other name was a license plate run for a hit and run unrelated to the other goings on.

There is a slight resemblance between white hat and Sunil, but not a perfect match. They are likely not the same.

NBC is reporting that these guys are from overseas, for the last year.

Yesterday morning, the internet is abuzz yesterday regarding two young men of Middle Eastern origins who “someone inside the investigation” leaked to multiple media sources.

Shortly thereafter, CNN goes down the “they have a suspect in custody road” … while elsewhere:

The Saudi Foreign minister meets with Obama on an unscheduled basis yesterday. The “Saudi national” reportedly comes from a very influential Saudi family. Suddenly, the “Saudi national” is going to be expelled for ‘national security reasons’ – meaning he’s being sent home to his family (which is odd) and then:

The FBI “developed intelligence regarding a second individual” not long after the Saudi FM’s meeting with Obama …

… and poof! there is no suspect in custody, nobody knows nothing …

… so today, the FBI agent releases the photos/videos of “two unnamed suspects” …

… and less than two hours later CBS is leaking the names of the two suspects!

Which is much more acceptable on a realpoltik basis than:

The Saudi FM cuts a deal with Obama telling him the “Saudi national” was not involved but knew who planted the bombs and will provide them to the FBI on the grounds that he be given a cover story (national security risk), sent home and the FBI blows smoke up everbody’s a$$ for 24 hours to create diversions for mass consumption.

Extra points if the FBI “help us identify these men” was intended to make them reach out to their handlers/helpers because the two suspects are already under surveillance six ways from Sunday.

With this much firepower and explosives – these are not “lone wolfs” – one of the local reporters said police source told him “explosive devices in Watertown were C4 – military grade – not home made”.

If true, these guys are trained pros – it is not easy to get C4 and from reports they had a lot.

Scanner – suspect #1 killed himself with explosive device – suspect at large may have same.”

Two for two …

It’s been 24 hours since I slept. This is going to go on for a looongg time and, I fear, is going to end in more death.

One comment before I go: This sort of situation is ANOTHER reason why the Second Amendment is so important. This “White Hat” POS is in, essentially, a “gun free state”. If MA residents lived up to the foresight of the Founders … they would not have to be cowering in their homes, defenseless.

God Bless and protect the people of MA, their brave LEO’s and everyone else.

PolAgnostic on April 19, 2013 at 6:04 AM

So far, the Boston PD have been most accurate in reports, so they say it’s Sunil Tripathi, Suspect 2, White Hat, on the run, and Mike Mulugeta as deceased Suspect 1, Black Hat.

So AP, NBC and DoJ are saying perps were/are “foreign nationals in US legally for a year” “foreign, military trained…”

Once again, it’s a wait and see situation as to what’s what.

Like a lot of stuff out of Hollywood, the truth is a thread or a whiff of something that is then twisted, turned, boiled down and filled up with a lot of wishful thinking or need to alarm.

Guevera was an educated man who took to the jungle to apparently play out some role he fancied but that’s also an aspect of him as psychotic. Truly a crazy man but he was intelligent.

This sort of situation is ANOTHER reason why the Second Amendment is so important. This “White Hat” POS is in, essentially, a “gun free state”. If MA residents lived up to the foresight of the Founders … they would not have to be cowering in their homes, defenseless.

God Bless and protect the people of MA, their brave LEO’s and everyone else.

DITTO.

Again and again, we see these evil creeps waging their evil deeds against populations that they are sure are the least capable of self defense.

If anything, these Marathon and Watertown events prove the need to keep and maintain an armed (“well equipped”) population (“militia”).

6 AM and Drudge Report still asleep.

aquaviva on April 19, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Drudge is either behind or jumping the gun and reporting false news. I can’t trust him anymore, especially on elections and Senate votes and SCOTUS decisions.

Odd that “military-trained” Islamo-terrorists would try to escape. Suspect #1, if he did blow himself up, fits the profile. Suspect #2, running away, doesn’t.

Presumably their training included the importance of not being captured and the glory of dying for their cause.

By all accounts there were dozens of targets available when he decided to run away.

Also curious that they allowed the car-jacking victim to get away.

But they were perfectly capable of killing the victim at any time, including during the escape. Just saying, it seems odd.

It appears that it began with a 7-11 robbery.

Unclear from what I’ve seen whether the slain MIT officer was responding to that or not. Several sources say that officer was shot in his patrol car.

Right now it looks like the whole thing exploded when the MIT officer they killed confronted them for some reason.

“One of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing is dead after the killing of a university officer and a shootout with police, and a massive manhunt is underway for the other, authorities said early Friday.

Police are locking down some neighborhoods in Boston and its western suburbs as they search for the remaining suspect: known as the man in the white hat from marathon surveillance footage.

Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down and businesses were asked not to open Friday. People waiting at bus and subway stops were told to go home.”

So they were still in the area over three days later, within a couple of miles of the site of the bombing. They were heavily armed and had more bombs and explosives in their possession.

It doesn’t sound like they were planning to or wanted to get away. It sounds more like they were planning at least one more more attack.

Whether intentional or not, their behavior is/was suicidal.

Chechen…It crossed my head earlier when I saw their pics, of all Muslims the Chechen and the Albanians (oh, yeah and the Muslim Bosnians) are definitely the lightest color skin. I guess the Turkish ones can be too, but theyare more of a mixed bag.

Likely didn’t anticipate or expect their photos to be publicized or even identified/linked to crime, also could very well have had preplanned exit thwarted so had to loiter in area, or, loitered in area b/c they felt they could safely hide there (having their id’s and photos made would ruin any sense of security in hiding in place)…

I think this is how it went down: They were on the MIT campus looking for places to plant explosives when the officer they killed came across them. Now the officer may not of had any idea what was going on, or who he was dealing with. They may have just gunned him down once he showed up. Once this happened they fled.
