Boston bombing update: The guys in the feds’ surveillance video probably aren’t who you think

posted at 10:41 am on April 18, 2013 by Allahpundit

The FBI is (finally!) going to release the footage that everyone’s been clamoring for later today. If you’ve read the New York Post this morning, you probably think you know who the guys in the video will be. You’re probably wrong. I watched an interview on Erin Burnett’s show last night with Fran Townsend (I think it was her), who’d seen photos of the suspects circulated by cops; CNN refused to air the pics but it was abundantly clear from her description that it’s the same two guys in the Post’s story today. If you followed Reddit’s marathon photo sleuthing yesterday, you knew instantly watching that interview who she meant. There were at least five or six different shots of them near the finish line being scrutinized on Reddit — one of them wore a white cap and bulging black backpack, the other a blue track suit with a sagging duffel bag. I went to bed last night thinking that’s who’d be in the video released today.

But apparently I’m wrong. The administrator of the Reddit sleuthing thread posted an alert this morning urging people to back off. Quote:

This is what you call a witch hunt media, for god sake.

The two males we’re talking about are the one in a black jumper/hoody with a white hat, and his friend in a blue track jacket. There are multiple news sites releasing their information and/or Facebook pages, this is disgusting and will not be tolerated here, no links to these stories are allowed.

Please report any posts regarding personal information on these two, they will be removed and the user will be permanently banned. All previous links to these two are being removed.

We are not waiting for them to be officially cleared, one of the men has contacted the police to try and clear his name. Please understand that the FBI now knows who they are, so our posts now have no purpose. If the situation changes then people can make new posts. It’s not our job to keep their information out there, people are innocent until proven guilty – not the other way around.

I can’t find any news stories confirming that yet but, given the site’s prominence, the Reddit editor may have been contacted by someone who knows something begging them to halt the speculation. I noticed that Newsweek editor Michael Moynihan was also tweeting skeptically about the two guys in the photo this morning and e-mailed him to ask why he thinks they’re innocent. Answer: He found their Facebook pages last night and says it seemed pretty clear from the volume of material about track and field, along with lots of other innocuous crap, that they’re unlikely to be the culprits. They were probably just there watching the race because they’re into long-distance running. Obviously he can’t be sure, but reasonable doubt suggests maybe not putting them on the front page of a major tabloid until the feds speak up. In fact, a reporter from CBS has already claimed this morning that the two guys on the Post’s cover aren’t the guys the feds are looking for.

And yet, these obviously were the guys in the photos being shown to the media last night, per the CNN interview. So why were cops spreading them around if there aren’t even the main suspects? Maybe there was a miscommunication with the feds, or maybe it’s part of an effort to run down anyone who looked even a little “suspicious.” From yesterday’s NYT:

The videos also showed at least a handful of others whom the authorities want to question, either because of what they appear to be doing in the video or their proximity to the blasts, a senior law enforcement official said…

The official said the authorities were trying to boil down the number of people of interest in the videos and would then decide whether to ask the public’s help in locating them…

The official added: “There are several videos with people in them, and we’re looking to talk to more than one guy. It’s still very squishy but there are a lot of interesting people” the authorities want to talk to.

According to the LA Times, there are two men on the surveillance video who’ve piqued investigators’ curiosity (“The men were singled out because of their demeanor and the way in which they reacted to the bomb blasts”), but as I say, they’re probably not White Cap and Track Suit. Those latter two were likely noticed because of their bags, their proximity to the blast site, and, let’s face it, the fact that they appear Middle Eastern. If the Boston Globe is correct, though, then the bags don’t match either. They claim that the surveillance video shows each man carrying a black bag; the bag carried by Track Suit in the Post’s photo is blue.

Anyway, we’ll know soon. Expect a new thread ASAP after the footage is released; I’m eager to see if the real suspects ended up in any of the photos online. Exit question about something that’s been bothering me for two days: If the bomb really was in that bag in the fourth photo here, how did it not dislodge the mailbox next to it? It’s a foot away and had enough power to take people’s limbs off. I know mailboxes are sturdy, but that sturdy? The bomb must have been somewhere else nearby, no?

What’s being covered up?

verbaluce on April 18, 2013 at 3:44 PM

The prime suspects’ pictures to say the least

WryTrvllr on April 18, 2013 at 3:47 PM

‘Prime’ suspects now? You have a source for that?
Maybe you read it in the NY Post.
The explanation given for not releasing them quite yet – to delay the onslaught of false leads to follow investigators will need to sift through – seems to make plenty of sense to be.
But then again I don’t see this oh so obvious cover up that’s going down.

verbaluce on April 18, 2013 at 3:56 PM

This whole thing feels very Bengazie-like. It is slipping away. After yesterday, the news outlets barely mentioned this all day, except to drool over Obama and his speech. The days will go by … we will hear less and less. No one will be caught.

djl130 on April 18, 2013 at 3:57 PM

Why hasn’t anyone or any group claimed responsibility if it’s terrorism…isn’t that the whole idea behind terrorist bombings? Is this just a random act of violence?

RepubChica on April 18, 2013 at 3:58 PM

those two guys never seemed suspicious. they clearly looked like runners, not just their outfit but their body type and stature as well. this ridiculous witch hunt needs to end.

sesquipedalian on April 18, 2013 at 11:46 AM

If someone wanted to blend in they’d probably look like runners AT A MARATHON.

Wagthatdog on April 18, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Mid-Eastern types love them some track suits anyway; wear them everywhere. Achmadickwad often wears them. I’ve often thought that economic sanctions on Iran on track suits would shut the country down.

slickwillie2001 on April 18, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I’m going to engage in the media’s favorite thing – speculation.

I have zero trust in this Obama regime. If the bomber is a middle eastern or Muslim man, we will never know about it. The suspect will be whisked out of the country – like they’re doing with that young Saudi guy. They will never allow the public to know that we were hit by Islamic terrorism – again.

If the suspect is a white male – something they can exploit politically – we will all hear about it.

Yes, I’ve become that cynical in the last 5 years.

We’ll never catch him or know his name!

The Times Square Bomber was a failed attempt – and I think I’m correct in saying he had obtained U.S. citizenship. A Saudi kid with connections to the Saudi Royal Family is probably a different story.

As numerous studies have pointed out, racial profiling doesn’t work.

libfreeordie on April 18, 2013 at 12:15 PM

I remember when news sources used to alert the public with descriptions like this:

Sex: Male

Age: 18-30 years of age

Height: 5’10″ to 6′

Weight: 180-200

Hair: Brown

Clothing: Black jacket, jeans, and trainers.

And, I would say, ‘AND????? You’ve just describe few hundred thousand possible perps. How’s that description going to help me help you? Or, do you really want to deal with ALL OF THE MEN that meet those requirements even though we could whittle it down if we are given the race and/or distinguishing religious clothing/hats/turbans/tattoos/facial hair/etc?’

Racial profiling does work, if it isn’t abused. We all profile people. If I tell you to tell my date, whom you haven’t met,’when you get to the restaurant that I’ll be late,’ wouldn’t it be more helpful if I also told you his was Hispanic or Black? That would save you the time of having to ask all the white and Asian men if he was so-so.

The best profiling is done by El Al.

I’m curious how you think that will happen? Won’t they release it through Al Jazeera or some such? Do they have a way to cut it off before it reaches America? Within America, they could just post it to FaceBook and it would be “out there” in seconds in screen captures and such. I understand where you’re going with this (complicit sycophantic media and such), but I don’t see how they can cover it up if the people who really did this want it to be known?

What??

That only makes sense if:
1: They don’t have anyone in custody
2: They are sure who did it, and don’t want the distractions.

Put those together and you get:

They don’t want to catch up to them.

I mean, how did they catch the Unibomber? (unabomber?)

RepubChica on April 18, 2013 at 3:58 PM

They do not always claim credit.

It took a long time for al Qaeda to claim credit for 9/11, long after everyone knew they were responsible. AFAIK no one has credibly claimed credit for the Benghazi attack on 9/11/12. AFAIK no one has ever credibly claimed credit for Khobar Towers. Going back further, did anyone claim credit for the first WTC bombing before Ramzi Yousef was apprehended?

Also, if further similar attacks are planned why hand out clues?

I completely agree Allah, but for a different reason: none of the runners seemed to be injured by this blast. All the injuries from this blast were to spectators, which means the bomb had to be among or behind the spectators. Many eyewitness accounts state that certain people were very near the blast, but not injured severely because the crowd of people btw the eyewitness & the bomb absorbed the impact.

Anyway, I’m surprised so many news orgs are running with this and not questioning it.

Rest assured.

The guys in the pictures are a 17-year-old runner and his coach.

People REALLY need to NOT post photos of innocent people that are spread all over the Internet without ANY confirmation that they are suspects.

The FBI asked people to send THEM their unedited photos, NOT try and be pseudo-Sherlock Holmes wannabes.

There were lots of assumptions about the Saudi student as well, who is NOT a suspect, and is NOT being deported.

Every blog I read has posted these photos or links to them. Stop!

Common Sense on April 18, 2013 at 5:14 PM

We are not waiting for them to be officially cleared, one of the men has contacted the police to try and clear his name.

Interesting. So, all a suspect has to do is call cops/FBI and tell them he did not do it, no further proof required? What I want to know is can the guy produce the backpack he is pictured with, SAME EXACT backpack, as of TODAY. As well as CONTENTS of that back pack or at least a description of an item that made the bulge so interesting in the photo? If so, yes, let’s apologize and move on. If not, well, a phone call to say “I did not do it” does not really work, does it.

Seems that LSM and WH are doing all they can to find “non-middle-eastern” looking suspects, pretty much hell bent on that. One of the first suspects will now be deported with his visa cancelled. Why? Napolitano’s reaction to the question, same exact reaction that Feinstein had to Cruz’s question on guns, was pretty telling. If there is nothing to it, as she claims, why not EXPLAIN WHY. Should be a quick explanation, right? That should also match Kerry’s and then Hussein’s meeting with Saudi reps.

People, watch the video of the first blast, look at the still photos of the scorch mark that indicates the point of detonation.

The device was not on the sidewalk outside the railing, it was in the crowd.

You can stop looking at damn spotlight photo of the bag beside the mailbox now. I saved you the trouble.

Well, yes, actually. The mailbox is bolted to the concrete sidewalk and from everything we’ve seen all the damage came from low velocity (compare to other explosives)shrapnel.
