Breaking: CNN says feds believe they’ve identified a suspect in the Boston bombing; Update: Feds want to talk to “a number of people”; Update: No arrests; Update: Black jacket, gray hooded sweatshirt, white cap

posted at 1:48 pm on April 17, 2013 by Allahpundit

If you believe John King, there’s surveillance video from Lord & Taylor department store of someone carrying and “perhaps” dropping a black bag near the site of the second bombing. What that means, I take it, is that they don’t have video of the drop itself but still frames of someone with, and then without, a backpack within a few seconds.

Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN’s John King exclusively.

The breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, said the source, who declined to be more specific but called it a significant development.

No images yet, but apparently CNN reported on air that the suspect has a dark complexion. This is … interesting too:

There’s a briefing today at 5 p.m. ET. I don’t know if “identified” means they already have a name or if they’re going purely by description, in which case they’ll have to release the surveillance videos and risk “inflammation.” Sources tell the Boston Globe that they’re “very close” in the investigation, which I guess means that if they don’t have the name yet, they think they will soon.

Like Ace, I’m curious to see if the surveillance images match with any of the people identified in the 4Chan crowdsourcing of marathon Flickr photos. I skimmed through them this morning and nothing looked odd to me except the two guys with black backpacks and beige pants and boots standing next to each other. But that makes no sense: If you’re operating in concert, why make it easier for the feds to spot you by wearing similar clothes? Anyway, stand by for updates.

Update: I guess they have a name.

CNN’s now reporting that the arrest’s been made. Stay tuned.

Update: I find it morbidly strange that the bomber(s) didn’t have plans for a second attack immediately, i.e. within hours, after the marathon bombing. They know they’re probably going to get caught, and given all the cameras at the finish line, it’s probably going to be soon. If they’re willing to kill on Monday, why not yesterday or today before they’re pinched?

Update Hmmmmm.

Authorities investigating the Boston Marathon bombing said Wednesday they have developed “solid leads” and identified “a number of people” they want to talk to after viewing hundreds of hours of video, with one or two standing out.

Senior officials told NBC News that they were not prepared to characterize those individuals as suspects.

“We are zeroing in on some people,” an official said.

Investigators analyzing photos and video have found people carrying black backpacks and duffel bags and setting them down in the area where the bombs went off, officials said.

Sounds like maybe they’ve got one suspect on the L&T video but think he may have had a partner.

Update: NBC says there’s no arrest yet but the AP says the suspect’s already on his way to the courthouse.

Update: The plot thickens:

Update: Total chaos:

Update: CBS has the first details of the surveillance vid, or so says their source:

At the site of what became the second explosion on Monday, surveillance video captured a man wearing a black jacket and gray hooded sweatshirt placing a backpack on the ground while talking on a cell phone, sources told Orr.

While the man was on the phone, the first explosion went off.

CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reports that authorities settled on one individual late Tuesday and are having discussions over whether to go public with identifying the person.

Update: Two tweets from the Boston Globe, posted within 11 minutes of each other, presented without further comment:

Update: A little more detail from a CBS affiliate:

Orr said authorities have video of a man in a black jacket on a cell phone, wearing a gray hoodie and a white baseball cap backwards placing a black bag at the second bomb site outside of the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street and then leaving the area before that explosion.

Orr said the man was on the phone at the second bomb site when the first bomb exploded.

Orr said the FBI looked at time man was on his cell phone and then went back and scanned all the calls made in the area to track who they wanted to talk to.

Are they suggesting that he detonated the bomb remotely by phone or that he placed a call to someone, or somewhere, that threw up a red flag?

Update: An FBI spokesman says nope, no arrests have been made. Who told CNN and the AP and the Boston Globe otherwise?

Update: Another strike against CNN: According to CBS, the suspect doesn’t have a “dark complexion.”

Update: I skimmed the 4Chan gallery again but didn’t see anyone matching the CBS description. (There’s a guy in a white hat and black coat/pullover, but no hoodie.) The only one that looks close-ish is about two-thirds of the way down the page, with a bunch of flags in the foreground, of a man crouched against a wall with a black backpack. But the cap looks gray, not white, and I don’t see a hood, just a jacket with a big collar. I don’t think the suspect’s in any of those images.

Update: Indeed.

Update: The “official” who told the AP earlier that a suspect is in custody is standing by that despite the FBI’s denial. Hmmm.

Legal Insurrection has a live feed from Boston on its site; there’s where I heard speculation of a suspect already in custody and taken to the federal courthouse because of the anchors and field reporter making comments about a grey van which is not normally seen at the courthouse pulling around the back, also unusual according to them.

As far as I understand they cleared and let Saudi guy go (probably was held more for his remarks when they grabbed him than anything else. “anyone dead? Thought there would be 2 bombs…”)

After that, there was some crowdsourcing and 4chan/reddit came up with some likely suspects (pure speculation at this point.)

THEN someone leaked info. on the person of interest/suspect(s) the FBI was looking at, the MSM went into full blown firestom mode, and now no one is really sure what is going on.

My advise is sit tight and wait for the 5:00 presser. Things will hopefully be clear then.

Sachiko on April 17, 2013 at 2:41 PM

It could be misinformation flying around, but bits of it could also be just the plain truth.

A “suspect” is just a person who is suspected of involvement. Any given investigation will have many suspects, most of whom will cease to be suspects after they have been questioned. So there is no contradiction in saying there was one suspect and now there are no suspects if the one suspect has been questioned and has been able to give an credible innocent account of whatever it was that caused him/her to be suspected in the first place.

Similarly people can be arrested if there are good reasons to believe that they could be about to commit some atrocity, and then released without charge when questioning and further investigation reveals the beliefs to be
unsupported by further evidence.

Idiot liberals like sesquipedalian lack the ability of logical thinking. Liberals can’t seem to make a connection that it is logical to assume a bombing is the result of Islamic terrorists. The fact that since 9/11 there have been 20,712 deadly attacks by muslims is more than enough reason to believe it is muslims. The second most logical conclusion would be left wing groups. Next to Muslim they are usually the ones with the most violent attacks.

WHITE GUY

So it IS Bill Ayers…

Orr said the FBI looked at time man was on his cell phone and then went back and scanned all the calls made in the area to track who they wanted to talk to.

Umm… If I were a terruhist planting bombs I wouldn’t be stupid enough to USE MY OWN PHONE to detonate it!

(Although that would appear to be a great way to set somebody up…)

They have to find just the right utube to blame this on. It takes time and there are many differences of opinion as to which one to choose. Be patient.

Looks like the some of the L.E. people involved in this investigation can’t keep their mouth shut. Not a good sign.

The only prediction I’ll make is that as time goes on, the number of officials at the Press Conferences will be fewer and fewer. Unless there’s an arrest, then everyone will be there to take credit.

Don’t worry, if the suspect isn’t a right-winger this will go down the memory hole in due time.

Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing from security video and an official statement was expected later in the day, a law enforcement source said on Wednesday.

However, no arrest had been made, three separate government and law enforcement sources told Reuters.

Police may make an appeal to the public for more information at a news conference scheduled for later on Wednesday, a government source said.

Earlier, CNN reported that a suspect was in custody, citing law enforcement sources. But then the network cited three sources who said no one was under arrest after all.

The identification of a possible suspect marked the most significant publicly disclosed break since Monday’s blast at the marathon finish line killed three people and injured 176 others.

Investigators were also searching through thousands of pieces of evidence from cell phone pictures to shrapnel shards pulled from victims’ legs.

Based on shards of metal, fabric, wires and a battery recovered at the scene, the focus turned to whoever may have made bombs in pressure cooker pots and taken them in heavy black nylon bags to the finish line of the world-famous race watched by crowds of spectators.

A stretch of Boston’s Boylston Street almost a mile long and blocks around it remained closed as investigators searched for clues in the worst attack on U.S. soil since the hijacked plane strikes of September 11, 2001.

Cities across the United States were on edge after Monday’s blasts in Boston. Adding to the nervousness was the announcement that mail containing a suspicious substance addressed to a lawmaker and to President Barack Obama. The FBI said, however, that agents had found no link the attack in Boston.

The blasts at the finish line of Monday’s race injured 176 people and killed three: an 8-year old boy, Martin Richard, a 29-year-old woman, Krystle Campbell and a Boston University graduate student who was a Chinese citizen.

Boston University identified the student as Lu Lingzi.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Whether it’s homegrown, or foreign, we just don’t know yet. And so I’m not going to contribute to any speculation on that,” said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who until January was Massachusetts’ senior senator. “It’s just hard to believe that a Patriots’ Day holiday, which is normally such time of festivities, turned into bloody mayhem.”

Breaking News: Hot Air is reporting that Mary Katherine Ham has been arrested. Bail hearing is set for 4pm. We can only assume she is wanted in connection with the Boston Bombings…she is a conservative with tax issues after all.

Check the front page folks. And stay tuned for further updates!

*Hey that was fun. And I didn’t even have to make all of it up. Take that CNN infobabes.*

Indeed…I commented also that none match what CBS claims.
