Boston bombing update: FBI searching for two men in surveillance video

posted at 10:01 pm on April 17, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Well, today was a roller coaster ride with regard to the investigation of the Boston bombing. After CNN and the AP reported for more than an hour that a suspect had been arrested and was en route to a federal courthouse, that relatively encouraging news devolved into the feds having no one in custody, and a bomb threat at a courthouse, instead.

The FBI scolded media:

Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.

The Boston Police announced an FBI briefing of some sort tonight at 8 p.m., but it was canceled. No word from them since.

I’ll tread lightly reporting what loose ends remain tonight. Several news services are reporting that the FBI has photos of two persons of interest, but it’s unclear whether those pictures will be released to the public. Given the canceled presser, maybe they’re not sure whether they’re going to.

Rick Leventhal reported on the photos on “Special Report” tonight on Fox, but declined to show them, so as not to jeopardize the investigation:

More from Fox:

The FBI is not sharing the photos with the public.

A Fox News reporter has seen the photos and called them “clear.”

According to the reporter, one of the men has a backpack that appears to match the bag believed to have been used in the attack. The other man also appears to have a bag of some kind.

Other news sources think the photos are forthcoming:

The LA Times corroborates the idea of two suspects identified via video.

Two possible suspects in the bombings have been singled out in surveillance videos of the scene, sources told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.

U.S. counter-terrorism and law enforcement officials told The Times that a department store video caught images of one man leaving a backpack near the finish line. A second federal official said he has been told that authorities believe a second video or photo showed “two men with two backpacks.”

A counter-terrorism official said the men were picked out because they were carrying black backpacks, as well as because of their demeanor and how they reacted to the bomb blasts. That official said authorities do not yet know the identities of those in the videos.

That sounds like the Lord & Taylor video 4chan has been sleuthing through crowd sourcing, but don’t take my word as definitive on that. The Fox source calling them “clear” suggests maybe the FBI has a better shot than 4chan users got their hands on.

And, while we wait for more information, this will lift your spirits a bit. God bless you, Boston.

al-Harbi is a really common name in the middle east (particularly in Saudi Arabia.) I’d be willing to bet that it’s also not the real last name of even half of the terrorists we’ve encountered using it, as it means “person of war” in Arabic. It’s probably a really common nom de guerre.

Looking at the other names they use (al-Hijri references Mohammad’s migration to Medina, al-Thahiri references a specific school of Islam, etc) it’s likely those are all nom de guerres.

It is odd he’s being deported for security reasons, but I don’t see anything in this guy’s history that screams fundamentalist radical. Just because someone uses the same last name as this kid doesn’t mean he’s part of their family.

But something is different..

Electrongod on April 17, 2013 at 10:30 PM

The difference? The Democrats with a few exceptions didn’t immediately politicize the original 9/11 like they did 4/15. They waited a “respectful” amount of time (several months!) before forgetting about America again.

Del Dolemonte on April 17, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Yep. Because then we could be sad and scared and shocked and grieved together as Americans, and we were united against a common enemy. Now, on top of the emotional strain of something like this, we have to immediately brace ourselves for the assault from the left–from our fellow Americans–as they smear and demonize “our side”–and we have to wonder what constitutional rights our government is going to use the crisis to try to strip away. And we have to watch the disgusting display of a president who never met a photo op he didn’t like. And we have the ugly spectre of Benghazi haunting us and causing us to wonder if any of the info we’re being fed is true or if it’s another blame-a-random-film-type scam. It’s not just different. It’s like a whole other category of different.

Someone help me out with this? How does not distributing the picture of the guys they think may have done it, help the investigation. How does releasing them “hurt” the investigation?

I mean wth? If these guys do it again and people weren’t allowed to see what they look like, how the heck are they going to get any help from the public. The Fox News piece unnerved me a bit. They aren’t allowed to show the suspects?

Based on totally just guessing–because I’ve wondered too–maybe they have leads on where to find the guys and don’t want to tip their hands that they’re coming after them? Or maybe it has something to do with the weird goings-on with the Saudis? Or maybe it’s just another example of control-freak government decision-making? Or maybe by “help the investigation” they mean give them time to prep Susan Rice for a round of interviews? Or maybe the suspects have ties to certain places that could be problematic if not handled delicately? Or maybe they’re just trying to be thorough before releasing the information? Or maybe the suspects are part of a larger group they’re hoping to capture and they don’t want to tip off the other group members? Who knows with the people who are in charge now; it could serve a legitimate purpose or it could be just a not-very-well-thought-out decision or it could be to hide something.

But yeah–I think it’s weird.

With the Saudi national leaving the country, I have changed my theory about all this. I think the feds figured it out pretty early on and they fed the media BS sandwiches until the pols worked out how all this is gonna end. The kid probably wasn’t involved, but knew something. So every description of possible perps was probably wrong.

Maybe that one kid’s false flag conspiracy theory will work out. I guess we’ll have to see if tomorrow a crazy loner with reloading powder is blamed and that starts talks of ammo control legislation.

I wonder if the real guys who did this are in the photo I linked. There’s three guys there, two of whom were bending over doing something – one on a pack, the other- ???

After FnF and Benghazi, once the WH etc touch something, I don’t really expect the to get to the truth, anyway.

G’night all!

Its not the dude with the backpack and kahki pants. He and his partner whip out geiger counters just after the blast. Probably ex-military DHS. Backpacks probably have NBC gear in them.

Video at bottom show geiger counter out.

The perps are probably the dude in the blue jacket and his buddy with the white baseball cap. They are both carrying heavy bags then don’t have them in a later shot. They don’t look like members of the John Birch Society.

Copy photo and zoom in and clearly there are no bags.

Except that the Saudi government would not use a ‘nom de querres’ on their own most wanted list. They would lead with the family name. That nation is a tribal culture, and the names are real. There really are that many alHarbis on the list. One is married to a daughter of al-zawahiri, the leader of al qaeda.

The deal definitely stinks. No way would he be released before the puzzle was solved

There is no way a person of interest would be deported ‘for security reasons’. In fact we would retain him. I assume the Saudis made a deal to recover him. Since he is not on a wanted list in saudi arabia, they are cashing in some kind of chips. Some alharbis are not in trouble for alqaeda connection, because they are syria al qaeda, and that suits the royal kingdom.

Cynic that I am, I could see Obama hoping to not find an al qaeda connection, since obama has boasted he eliminated al qaeda. Who knows, he might have asked the kingdom to take the guy away, so he can continue the domestic terror drama

entagor on April 18, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Two possible suspects

There’s that phrase again — (nameless) “possible” suspects.

Better than nothing, but not by much unless they can do facial recognition analysis against a database of known terrorists.

And they are not releasing them. Why not?

The “possible” suspects had to have assumed they would eventually be picked out in the surveillance photos and videos. I doubt they would do anything different because the FBI now might have a photo of them.

This smells a little like a news release made for public consumption to show they are making progress.

Don’t agree. The guy wearing blue still has his bag over his shoulder. The other guy may be holding his bag in front of him at his feet like we all do when we tire of carrying it. Inconclusive, I think.

Cleombrotus on April 18, 2013 at 7:50 AM

The FBI is busy denying reports made by numerous news state & national agencies that an arrest of a black / dark-skinned male has already occurred. Based on how much the Obama administration has rovided the American people so far, I would not be amazed to find that an arrest HAS been made, that they have whisked him away, and that they are trying to keep the news from getting out that it was an Islamic Extremist – possibly even Al Qaeda – attack.

Almost immediately after the attack President Obama made comments regarding he thought the attack could be part of a right wing (as if suggesting the TEA – Taxed Enough Already – Party) action on Tax Day. Politico reported ‘Let’s hope it was perpetrated by a WHITE (American)’ and many Liberals started pushing the FALSE premise that Conservatives are violent and could have perpetrated this crime.

(For the record:
o The ‘VIOLENT PARTY’? EVERY Presidential assassination / attempted assassination has been perpetrated either by someone with NO Party affiliation/affinity or a ‘Democrat’.
o The ‘VIOLENT PARTY’? Bill Ayers, Obama’s friend in whose House he declared his intent to run for political office, is an ex-member of the TERRORIST group the Weathermen Underground’ & perpetrated bombings that resulted in the deaths of 1st responders/fellow Americans.
o The guy who sent risin recently to Obama & Senators? There is a picture of him posing in front of a bumper sticker on his car as he gives the ‘thumbs up’ – the sticker reads, “I am a Democrat’.
o Democrats started the KKK, a violent, racist group that perpetrated many hangings, ‘torchings’, etc…

It is amazing how VIOLENT the Democrats’ past (and today) is, yet they continue to push the LIE that it is Conservatives who are violent. It is about TOLERANCE & FACTS. Liberals are intolerant – you have to believe their way & they have to pass a law either banning YOUR rights &/or mandating their agenda. Conservatives want to sit down and DISCUSS issues using facts & the Constitution, both of which Democrats try to avoid at all costs.

People calling in to WRKO this morning felt the press conference was cancelled possibly due to a cover up of the fact the perpetrators don’t match the right profile. There were also a few references to an unexpected tete a tete between the Emperor Zero and the Saudi minister.

Is it possible Obama doesn’t want to be embarrassed before his screed at the interfaithservice this morning?

Will he spew more vitriol over not getting his way on gun control?

It must also rankle that support for ZeroCare(tm) (my new moniker for it, How do you like it?) is crumbling faster than hull plates on the Titanic.

It has descended into rank propaganda.

I’m struck by two broadcasts I’ve seen. One we’ve linked to here where the Fox Reporter is just acting stunned that he can’t give the description. I think trying to be respectful but the look on his face I think belies a bit of “wtf are you kidding me” attitude. And begged a question I asked earlier, why? If I were reporting and the picture were the current BOLO issued, wtbbf wouldn’t the authorities want them seen?

The other was Anderson Cooper and two other journalists. But instead of looking incredulous, they looked like three people on suicide watch. Cooper was even fidgeting with his phone rather than looking at the camera and looking away. King was spoken with via link and he made the comment the description was dark and he was afraid to say any more.

Fox dude just seemed to want to get the word out and the CNN trio were near crying because it wasn’t Bubba.

It could still end up being anyone. When the authorities offer a reasonable/responsible bit of evidence for the public, they need to keep the agenda out of it and get the word on the street.

same reason they didn’t want to report on the Gosnell trail. It goes against the narrative they need to push thier agenda. It’s no longer about the truth and “letting the people decide” It’s about how well do we manage the people by releasing only select information. If its middle eastern men then the MSM/government thinks us bubbas will start burning down muslim homes and places of worship. They don’t want to admit we are in a cold war with over a billion people. Chirstianity and Islam are day and night from a relgious POV.

then of course FOx is owned by the Saudi’s partly so I’m sure there is pressure being put on them.

I am ashamed of our media and how we have allowed them to be taken over by the left.

He heard the news barely an hour after crowning the victor of Monday’s annual race and departing the event.
