No White House envoy to Thatcher funeral? Update: Boehner sending House delegation

posted at 10:01 am on April 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

And the British government is apparently unhappy about it, too.  Sources within Whitehall told the Daily Mail that the Obama administration’s decision to skip sending an envoy to what has become a de facto state funeral for one of America’s staunchest Cold War allies came before the Boston terrorist attack yesterday, and that the White House had cited a “busy week” for the reason they couldn’t even spare Joe Biden for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral:

Friends and allies of Baroness Thatcher expressed ‘surprise and disappointment’ last night as it emerged President Obama is not planning to send any serving member of his administration to her funeral.

Whitehall sources have revealed that the US delegation at tomorrow’s service in St Paul’s Cathedral will be led by two Reagan era secretaries of state: James Baker and George Shultz.

Though President Obama himself had not been expected to attend, there had been speculation that he would be represented either by Vice President Joe Biden or wife Michelle. However, the Obama administration had said it would not be attending Thatcher’s funeral before the Boston bombings.

The Queen’s decision to attend Lady Thatcher’s funeral has effectively elevated it to a state occasion unprecedented for a political figure in Britain since the death of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.

Other world leaders, including Canada’s Stephen Harper, Mario Monti of Italy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, are attending the service in person.

Normally, that would prompt attendance by a high-level figure in the US government — if not the President or Vice-President, a high-ranking Cabinet official.  For instance, why not send John Kerry, the Secretary of State tasked with maintaining good relations with close allies like the UK?  Instead, the US delegation will consist of two men who would be traveling as private citizens to the funeral already, essentially giving an official policy of ignoring the event and snubbing the other world leaders attending it.

And why?  Obama and Biden are too busy pushing gun control, according to the US embassy:

But a US embassy spokesman confirmed that no serving member of his administration would be present to pay their last respects, citing a busy week in US domestic politics.

‘This is a hugely significant week in terms of US domestic politics,’ a spokesman added.

He said that both the First Lady and the Vice President were ‘the President’s point people on gun control’, adding: ‘This is a week when there is a lot of movement on Capitol Hill on gun control issues.’

Well, Kerry isn’t part of that, is he?  (Oh, wait ….) They’re too busy to pay respects to someone who stood by America as a stalwart partner in the latter years of the Cold War, when it might have been easier for her to keep her distance.  Shameful.  And it’s not being ignored in the UK, either:

Former defence secretary Dr Liam Fox, Lady Thatcher’s closest ally in modern-day politics, said: ‘I think it would be both surprising and disappointing if after President Obama’s fulsome tribute to Lady Thatcher, the American administration did not send a senior serving member to represent them.’

Sir Gerald Howarth, chairman of the Thatcherite Conservative Way Forward group of MPs and peers, said: ‘The bonds forged between the UK and the US through Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher was instrumental in ending the Cold War and liberating millions of people.

‘That the present administration feels unable to be represented as the world marks the extraordinary contribution Margaret Thatcher made will be a source of disappointment to those who served with her in that great endeavour.’

Smart power.

Update: Just as a reminder, Congress decides separately on delegations to events such as this.  I’d expect to see both the House and Senate send small delegations to the funeral.

Update: Just received by e-mail, but it actually came out yesterday:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced he will send a delegation to London this week to represent the U.S. House of Representatives at the funeral of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister of the United Kingdom.  The delegation will be led by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

Margaret Thatcher was one of the greatest champions freedom has ever known, and her funeral gives Americans and friends around the world an opportunity to pay final respects,” Boehner said. “I’m pleased that Congressman Blackburn will lead a House delegation to Baroness Thatcher’s funeral to communicate our prayers and condolences to her family and the British people.”

The House delegation to London will also include Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and George Holding (R-NC).

The House delegation will fly to London on commercial air flights, in compliance with the Speaker’s directive that Member use of military air transportation be suspended with sequestration in effect.

Also, our ambassador in London should attend the funeral, but that’s not the same as sending a delegation representing the head of state.

Remember, with Obama, it’s always about Himself.

Obama loathes Britain – an irrational and ignorant view probably embedded into him from his socialist unbringing.

Notice that Obama refuses to acknowledge the UK’s right to the Falkland Islands. Instead, Obama supports Argentina’s claim to the islands; Obama doesn’t even call them ‘The Falklands’ but uses the Argentinian term.

And we all know that one of Obama’s first acts in the WH was to remove the bust of Winston Churchill, a gift of the UK.

What did he give the Queen on his state visit to the UK? If you can believe it, a tape of his speeches! The narcissism of such an act is beyond belief.
Oh, and how about his behavior at the state dinner for the Queen in the UK? Obama actually kept chattering and talking during the playing of the UK National Anthem (God Save the Queen).

Obama not only has no class; his focus is always and only on Himself; but, he loves to insult and put down others – and this action against the UK, is one such example.

So I’ve noticed. The subtle, laughing, smearing put-downs of others, cloaked in humor or self-righteousness, often accompanied by a s***-eating grin. Almost always towards those who simply disagree with him. It’s a method of the Left — it’s not enough to win … they must put you down personally. If they can destroy you, so much the better.

A La Shades of his Anti-Colonialist daddy, Obama continues to hod a grudge against Britain and shows his @$$. Anyone remember the Churchill bust that he sent back? The only surprising thing is that anyone is surprised at this!

He told everyone for the 1st time in US history that a candidate’s past & personal life should not be considered, that aving been raised / mentored by noted Communists & racist nation-hating pastors was of no concern, & that buddies – like TERRORIST Bill Ayers – should not be considered.

Hollywood made a movies about the Weatherman Underground, & both Hollywood & Liberals called their acts of terrorism ‘romantic’ in describing how they perpetrated bombings in which they killed 1st responders, glorifying their actions while fighting for a cause. Earlier today Obama declared the terrorist bombing in Boston NOT NECESSARILY a ‘terrorist bombing’ because it was, after all, ‘Tax Day’. The j@ck@$$ is trying SO HARD to downplay ‘terrorism’. It doesn’t matter WHO did it! Even if ‘Disgruntled Americans’ perpetrated this bombing – much like his PALS, the Weathermen Underground, the act is STILL an act of ‘TERRORISM’! As far as his reference to ‘tax day’, I am surprised he did not come out & say, ‘As this is TAX Day, I would bet it was perpetrated by the TEA (‘Taxed Enough Already’) PARTY! Good grief!

The man has not hidden who he is, what he stands for, his disdain for this nation & its allies, & his agenda (& promise) to ‘fundamentally change the U.S.’.

REMEMBER every time Liberals accuse Conservatives of making controversal remarks about people…then compare that to the VILE things they say at times like these! Unlike LIBERALs/PROGRESSIVES, Conservatives don’t celebrate the deaths of members of the opposing party, do not write songs celebrating it, do not cheer it on…and do not disrespect the dead / our allies by snubbing a oment / event like the way Obama did. What he did is just LOW CLASS…and I wouldn’t expect anything different from him.

The bonds forged between the UK and the US through Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher was instrumental in ending the Cold War and liberating millions of people.

Very True.

But, you see, Reagan and Thatcher were strongly anti-Socialist, whie the Democratic Socialists presently in control of the White House and Senate are strongly anti-Reagan and anti-Thatcher. In the view of the Democratic Socialists, it is socialist “liberation theology” which liberates millions of people.

Two diametrically opposed worldviews. And just as Obama sent the Churchill bust back to England, you can’t expect him to show any true appreciation for Thatcher.

No-one from Obama’s administration is going. That is, members of the House and Senate are NOT ‘his administration’ even though he calls them that to show their subservience to Him. Obama ought to have sent Kerry as Sec of State.

It’s a deliberate and open snub by Obama against the UK.

But Obama is like that. For Obama, everything is personal. Everything. And the personal is defined as either you are subservient and adulatory to him (sorry, Him) or he’ll ignore you. It’s always about Him. Not the nation. Not America and Americans. Him.

Perhaps more than anything else he has done or not done, this moment has the capacity to publicly define this President. It does not provide a window on his “politics” but upon his character. He is a small man.

Many claim he is very smart. But is he? How can he not see that regardless of how he considers Prime Minister Thatcher and her heritage, there are tremendous advantages that would accrue to him from attending her funeral? Shakespeare would understand it perfectly: Brutus of Caesar; Henry of Thomas à Becket; Lincoln of Lee’s decision to fight in opposition; history is full of such. Were Clinton still President is there any doubt that he would make the most of it? Or at least comprehend the grand stage he could play on? Death is the great equalizer and there is nothing grander than pronouncing a eulogy for one’s grand historical opponent. For such a “smart” politician, how can he not understand that the more magnificent the opponent, the more magnificent one’s own self?

For all of the hoopla concerning our great prize-winning intellectual President, he’s turned out to be very ordinary.

Notice something else – I may be wrong – but the only people going are members of the Republican Party. No Democrats.

As for Obama being ‘very smart’ – I don’t see any evidence of intelligence or brains. He is absymally ignorant about economics and history; he doesn’t even himself know when he’s misinforming and talking nonsense.

He’s not a great speaker; he’s a preacher, ie, someone with a Voice. So, he can pontificate but his words are totally empty. He’ll say whatever is needed to enchant and entrance his audience-of-the-day. The next day, speaking to a different audience, he’ll make a totally contradictory claim. But get him off the teleprompter and he’s incoherent and rambling.

It’s easy to talk; to tell us that he’ll ‘get the Benghazi culprits’ (yeah, sure). That he’ll get the Boston culprits (yeah, sure). That he’ll lower unemployment – which is, if you include those who’ve given up looking for work, at least 13% and higher. That our money will only go to ‘shovel-ready projects’ (heh, sure).
And that Sandy Hill people will be looked after (oh?). Talk, talk, and more empty words.

He’s a pathological narcissist, with only one focus: Himself. And he does love to put other people down – whether it be the GOP. Or Congress. Or Fox news. Or Britain. He gets his kicks from kicking others.

He said that both the First Lady and the Vice President were ‘the President’s point people on gun control’, adding: ‘This is a week when there is a lot of movement on Capitol Hill on gun control issues.’

Anyone else miss out on Michelle Obama’s election?

Notice that Obama refuses to acknowledge the UK’s right to the Falkland Islands. Instead, Obama supports Argentina’s claim to the islands; Obama doesn’t even call them ‘The Falklands’ but uses the Argentinian term.

He actually refers to them as “The Maldives”.

But then, he’s a genius. //

For all but the purposely blind, the man has demonstrated to the world just how incredibly small he is.

Want to examine the other side? I talk to friends who are black peeps and libs. It keeps you sharp, friend.

In a statement released by the White House, President Obama said that her death meant the loss of “one of the world’s great champions of freedom and liberty” — a peculiar tribute from the first black U.S. president, considering that Thatcher, like Reagan, defended the apartheid regime in South Africa from its Western critics.

She opposed the release from prison of Nelson Mandela, the leader of the African National Congress who later became South Africa’s first democratically elected president, referring to him as a “terrorist.” In 1984, she reversed longstanding British foreign policy by hosting a state visit by white South African president P.W. Botha. And although she defeated Argentina’s military junta in the Falklands war, Thatcher befriended the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet — even inviting him to her home in England when he was under investigation for human rights atrocities.

Brief Open Note to the UK:

On behalf of a truly grateful ally and the citizens of your “cousins across the water” please accept our apologies on the crassness of some of our elected officials over the untimely passing of Lady Thatcher.

As a much wiser person than I once said “Class is more than a station in life, but a life choice”….some unfortunately, choose badly.

No time to read all the previous comments, so if someone already said this, I apologize….

Hey, the last time B.O. was in London with the Queen, he gave a toast, speaking all the way through the National Anthem (of Great Britain: “God Save The Queen”). He doesn’t blame himself, though – all he heard was “My Country, ‘Tis Of Thee”…..!

The look on his face, seeing the discomfited looks on the Brits’ faces everywhere around him (and not understanding), is priceless….!!

I’m guessing that Margaret Thatcher is looking down on us and saying, “Thank God obama won’t be coming to my funeral, or anyone from his administration. I didn’t want him to attend anyway. Thank your mr. president for making the right choice!”

obama didn’t want to be close to the BUST of Winston Churchill. Why would he want to be close to a LIVING WOLD HERO like Thatcher?

Are you liberals finally starting to find out that obama hates to be around people who fight for freedom, but loves to be around those who fight against it?

After I wrote the above, I wondered if it is possible that England secretly asked the president not to attend. I’m not saying I think they did, just that it wouldn’t surprise me if they did.
