Video: Gosnell staffer, defense attorney argue over whether babies were alive

posted at 9:21 am on April 11, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

The national media aren’t interested in telling the story of a man accused of butchering women and slaughtering babies, but at least local news outlets are still in the news-reporting business. Delaware Online has a reporter assigned to the trial of Kermit Gosnell, and Sean O’Sullivan of the News Journal provided this low-budget video wrap-up of the testimony of a key witness. Lynda Williams helped Gosnell “ensure the fetal demise” of the babies that resulted from his botched late-term abortions, and got into an argument with Gosnell’s defense attorney about whether the babies were actually alive at all:

Attorneys sparred today over whether the child whose neck Lynda Williams said she “snipped” at Kermit Gosnell’s abortion clinic was alive or dead at the time.

Gosnell’s defense attorney John McMahon also brought out on cross examination that the 44-year-old Williams, of Wilmington, never saw movement, breathing or any other signs of life in the 30 or so other fetuses that she said she saw Gosnell cut the spinal cords of to ensure “fetal demise.”

But Williams ultimately stuck to her testimony that she saw independent movement in a child that she said she cut the neck of on Gosnell’s orders and that what was going on at Gosnell’s clinic was wrong.

I understand that Gosnell’s attorney has a duty to present a robust defense of his client, and that there isn’t any rational defense to be found. However, this is sophistry at its worst. If the babies were dead, Gosnell wouldn’t have directed his staff to chop their spinal columns at the neck, would he? The direction to do so shows that Gosnell’s state of mind was concern that the babies would survive, and his response to ensure they didn’t demonstrates his intent to kill.

These are the kinds of details, though, that most media would find fascinating in any other criminal trial.  Kirsten Powers makes the same point in a column at USA Today this morning, wondering why national media outlets can’t find room to discuss a butcher who maimed women and the government agencies that looked the other way:

Infant beheadings. Severed baby feet in jars. A childscreaming after it was delivered alive during an abortion procedure. Haven’t heard about these sickening accusations?

It’s not your fault. Since the murder trial of Pennsylvania abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell began March 18, there has been precious little coverage of the case that should be on every news show and front page. The revolting revelations of Gosnell’s former staff, who have been testifying to what they witnessed and did during late-term abortions, should shock anyone with a heart. …

A Lexis-Nexis search shows none of the news shows on the three major national television networks has mentioned the Gosnell trial in the last three months. The exception is when Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan hijacked a segmenton Meet the Press meant to foment outrage over an anti-abortion rights law in some backward red state.

The Washington Post has not published original reporting on this during the trial andThe New York Times saw fit to run one original story on A-17 on the trial’s first day. They’ve been silent ever since, despite headline-worthy testimony.

Let me state the obvious. This should be front page news. When Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, there was non-stop media hysteria. The venerable NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams intoned, ”A firestorm of outrage from women after a crude tirade from Rush Limbaugh,” as he teased a segment on the brouhaha. Yet, accusations of babies having their heads severed — a major human rights story if there ever was one — doesn’t make the cut.

You don’t have to oppose abortion rights to find late-term abortion abhorrent or to find the Gosnell trial eminently newsworthy. This is not about being “pro-choice” or “pro-life.” It’s about basic human rights.

Indeed.  Powers calls the silence “a disgrace,” but it’s a revealing disgrace.

Want to understand how 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, this is a microcosm. Everybody knows what is being perpetuated, they just choose to ignore it.

RMOccidental on April 11, 2013 at 9:33 AM

The national media have to ignore this, lest someone ask why they won’t make a call for nationwide investigation of abortion mills, the way they’re at the forefront of calls for tighter state and Federal gun laws. If there are several mills out there with similar practices, a major cash cow for politicians might be in jeopardy. More people might call for tighter restrictions on abortion, like no longer performing these late term murders.

Stories like this are too hot to handle for the liberal media, because one of their prime sacraments might come under a microscope. Can’t have that, can we?

If they were dead.

Then it’s abuse of a corpse.

Which is what every serial killer I can think of, was charged with.

So let Gosnell go down that road, and file new charges that put him in the context of being a serial killer.

Baby serial killer. I made that argument when the story first broke. Only they collect body parts of victims.

If a veterinarian were putting down old and sick animals this way, it would be national news. The horror would send the media on a ‘fact finding’ mission to learn if the vet votes Republican, is a member of the Tea Party and/or NRA, if he owns guns, and if he dodges his taxes. Every vet in the country would be under suspicion.

This matter is very important to women seeking abortions, for them to choose wisely who they go to for the procedure. Gosnell didn’t just kill babies. He maimed women, too, costing one or more her life. Anyone who thinks this is a small matter doesn’t much care about women’s health, either.

Bishop on April 11, 2013 at 9:45 AM

I recommend the conservative media emphasize the women who are being treated with filthy instruments in these hideously unsafe clinics. The pro-abortion women out there will cover their eyes and turn away from any discussion of baby killing. But unsterilized instruments put in their private parts? That will get their attention. Let’s ask Sandra Fluke if she received her last Pap smear at a Planned Parenthood clinic.

…And seriously, I have liberal girlfriends. I’m going to ask them to make sure they get checked for HIV and other reproductive infections if they’ve ever gone to Planned Parenthood for anything at all.

Others asked up thread if these conditions are common and answer is yes. There are not many late-term baby killing places, but there was a local story here in the Midwest. In this case there was a mother who by God’s mercy a healthy botched-abortion toddler. There were some late-term abortions taking place here. The “doctor” had a cozy relationship with someone on the state medical board, so complaints were not pursued. The doctor skipped the state to practice elsewhere when the local media pursued what had been going on.

The conditions of this “clinic” were third world. People would not take their dogs and cats there. This is somewhat anecdotal, but I would say that many, many abortionists go into it because they would have had their licenses yanked in other fields of medicine or no one would want them as doctor because they are imcompetent. Who goes to medical school saying, “I want to be abortionist”? The sonogram/ultrasound and shining the sunlight on these clinics and these horrible doctors is the way forward for the pro-life movement.

When the subjects were told that the shocks increased in intensity, they still kept pushing the buttons on-command. Every last one, every last time. When the button presses elicited blood-curdling screams, every last experimental subject kept right on pushing. And when the screams stopped, and the experimenters pretended to go check on the “victims’” vital signs (implying that the supposed victims might be dead), not a one experimental subject showed the least bit of concern.

So? It should be sensationalized, so people understand the horrors that occurred there (and are probably occurring in other murder factories). It’s not like the media doesn’t mind sensationalizing other stories, either, ones that fit in with the agenda they’re peddling.

Indeed, reporters should be talking about the baby parts in jars, beheadings, their cries of anguish. Too many out there would like to believe that abortion is only about a mother’s choice…they’ve completely blocked out the fact you’re snuffing out another life in the process. I do think this is an important story. But with gun control legislation, immigration reform, gay marriage rulings, budget negotiatons oh…and a country threatening nuclear war on us, I’m not sure where this story can fit in

nonpartisan on April 11, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Please tell me you’re not serious. We have 24 hour news channels, billions of MB of bandwidth on the internet, and countless newspapers. Don’t try to sell me the BS notion that all of these so-called news outlets that somehow found time to oversaturate us with Mike Rice stories couldn’t devote a single story to the Gosnell trial.

BobMbx on April 11, 2013 at 9:54 AM

“Infant beheadings. Severed baby feet in jars. A childscreaming after it was delivered alive during an abortion procedure. Haven’t heard about these sickening accusations?”

nonpartisan on April 11, 2013 at 9:32 AM

The severed baby feet in jars is NOT an accusation. It is an indisputable FACT.

Go read the Grand Jury testimony and report. If it makes you ‘uncomfortable,’ good.

Meh. She’s still an Obama voter. She’s still a Dem apologist. I’m not going to be too quick to congratulate her for exercising what is, in my view, the barest minimum of common-sense conscience.

This is a great point…knowing the details here, however hard it is to do so, absolutely should make anyone uncomfortable…at best. If there’s a person on either side of the abortion issue that can remain apathetic after reading those accounts, then they have no soul.

JetBoy on April 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM

“We’ve forgotten what belongs on Page One.”

Good column, and perhaps even a “courageous” for a liberal to write, but the above is ironic to say the least.

Putting accounts of the trial on Page One would be an “inconvenient distraction” from what the media is promoting, and we can’t have that, can we?

Drained Brain on April 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM

nonpartisan is a typical lib who adores sex. Libs never want anything to get in the way of unbridled sexual activity. Abortions allow for all sex all the time. Therefore, a story which reveals the truth about abortion cannot happen.

Little harsh?… The subhuman does not care about babies being killed and you think that insulting him is harsh?…

mnjg on April 11, 2013 at 10:02 AM

This is effectively Infanticide.

Think about it. When the parents want the child, and the child is born, either naturally or by Caesarian, early – and this can be very, very early – this newborn is moved in the high technology and intensive care of neonatal units in hospitals.

When the parent(s) do not want the child, they go to a different federally funded or private institution. There, the child, who can be much later term than the protected neonatal baby, is similarly induced. BUT, instead of care, it is given no care and its neck is snipped, breaking its spine as in a hanging execution.

That’s INFANTICIDE. The USA is allowing infanticide within its borders. And, as in the Holocaust, we dither about even discussing it!

ETAB on April 11, 2013 at 10:03 AM

I understand that Gosnell’s attorney has a duty to present a robust defense of his client, and that there isn’t any rational defense to be found. However, this is sophistry at its worst.

When did “robust defense” extend beyond making sure that Gosnell’s rights are respected and that any favorable information be brought to the attention of the court?

This is a horrible stain of what this country has become under the new Obama/progressive liberals viewpoint. This is NOT the America that I love. While Obamas take $1.2 billion a year vacations doctors and Planned Parenthood are killing the unborn. I hope there is a God that these people will meet in the afterlife. Horrible situation.
