“Morning Joe”: Even Al Qaeda thinks our background checks system is weak

posted at 5:11 pm on April 11, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Conn Carroll, I can’t tell if they’re offering this as a cautionary tale, to expose a security vulnerability identified by Al Qaeda before it’s exploited (AQ would never buy guns from the black market), or if it’s more of a shaming thing where gun-rights supporters are supposed to feel guilty because even a degenerate like Adam Gadahn thinks our laws need improving. My sense from the clip is that Scarborough’s thinking along the former lines while Mika, predictably, is thinking along the latter. I did … not anticipate having to fact-check Al Qaeda as part of America’s gun debate — thanks for injecting them into it, BuzzFeed — but Carroll’s right, of course, that this little shpiel is based on a lie. You can’t buy a “fully automatic assault rifle” at a gun show or anywhere else. (In fact, you can’t even buy a legal weapon at a gun show without a background check under current law if you’re buying from a licensed dealer.) I wonder if Gadahn knows that and is lying for propaganda reasons or if, like so many Democratic thought leaders on gun control, he’s an ignorant blowhard who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Same question for Joe and Mika, I guess: Did they neglect to note Gadahn’s lie because they couldn’t spot it or because noting it would reduce the video’s usefulness to The Cause?

Here’s an old list of “advice” from Gadahn on foreign policy in case “Morning Joe” needs some guidance on that subject too. Exit question: If we’re worried about Al Qaeda buying legal guns in the U.S., why aren’t we trying to ban all handguns, or at least all semiautomatics? It’s much easier to conceal a Glock than it is an AR-15. Let’s make things really hard on the terrorists by rolling back the Second Amendment as far as we can.

Can’t wait to hear about how “even Al Qaeda thinks our path to citizenship is weak”

Al Gaeda does background checks? Assault rifle bans too?

They’re ignorant and don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Not that it’s ever stopped them before.

Do they also offer their opinions about our voter ID system, too?

Al Qaeda took advantage of our lax immigration system, and yet, we are loosening THAT and Morning Hoes is crickets on THAT.
Joe, come out of the closet already. Embrace your inner commie already!

RovesChins on April 11, 2013 at 5:18 PM

You can’t buy a “fully automatic assault rifle” at a gun show or anywhere else.

Actually, you can, but the process involves a more thorough background check and a pocketful of money. You have to pay a transfer tax. The number of civilian market full-autos is limited and demand is high, so the weapons all have hefty price tags. (The real $$$ killer is the cost of ammunition, which the Class III dealers don’t mention!)

These NFA registry weapons are virtually never involved in crimes.

novaculus on April 11, 2013 at 5:19 PM

MSDNC had to scrub the first take of this bit when someone figured that Mika saying “And now we go to our special field correspondent Adam Gadahn…well good morning, Adam…” might not go over all that well.

Bishop on April 11, 2013 at 5:19 PM

(In fact, you can’t even buy a legal weapon at a gun show without a background check under current law if you’re buying from a licensed dealer.)

And, also with internet sales. The weapon has to be shipped to a FFL licensed dealer. Apparently Mancin and Toomey didn’t take the trouble to look that up.

I wonder if Gadahn knows that and is lying for propaganda reasons or if, like so many Democratic thought leaders on gun control, he’s an ignorant blowhard who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Probably the later. He probably gets his information from the same place all of HA’s liberal trolls do. And considering he has no clue whatsoever about purchasing automatic weapons in the US he has obviously never attempted to procure weapons himself inside the US. Yet we will have to listen to ignorant leftists drone on about how stupid us pro-gunners are because we don’t take heed what their fellow ignoramus Gadahn has to say on the issue.

NotCoach on April 11, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Why do you and other conservatives insist on treating Joe Scarborough and MSNBC as if they were mainstream and/or journalists when they are neither.

That punk has never come clean as to why he had to resign his seat right after being reelected.

I don’t have MSNBC on my channel lists. Who gives a rat’s patootie what that bunch of leftist nuts say?

How come Al Qaeda knows we already do background but liberals don’t?

Well, I’d venture to guess liberals think no one does background checks because mass murderers acquire fire arms so easily. Obviously, we don’t have background checks, otherwise potential mass murderers would be subjected to background checks and incidents such as at Sandy Hook could never occur.

hawkeye54 on April 11, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Well, they’re the only ones we know of allowed to procure them no questions asked with full Federal approval.

“Gadahn’s statement is, of course, completely false. But we shouldn’t be surprised that Scarborough and Brzezinski are passing off al Qaeda propaganda as truth.”

It sure would be nice if someone was held accountable…

Seven Percent Solution on April 11, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Pretty silly complaint.
Your issue is that you know more about guns and the gun control issue can only be discussed/debated by those with equal or greater firearms knowledge?
And how much do you know anyway…can I assume more than some and less than others?
Well, same here.

They had seen the clip ahead of time, so they or their staff would have had time to check it. “Fully automatic” is always a huge red flag, and it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t catch it, but maybe they really are just that stupid.

Not really. After all our president just repeated the exact same lie recently. I believe that most really are this stupid. I believe that the depth of their firearm knowledge is the last action movie they saw.

Morning Joe? Is tat the asinine show that devotes their first hour to gun control every day?

It’s so pathetic it makes Piers Morgans propaganda hour look entertaining.

N Korea could hit Japan with a missile tomorrow and that rag show wouldn’t get around to mentioning until the second hour. Phhhht

Bensonofben on April 11, 2013 at 6:05 PM

You also have to have a Class III firearms license to buy/possess automatic weapons. The seller, also, has to have the proper license, not just an FFL.

There is so much lying attached to this issue, most people really don’t know the truth.

And the media simply perpetuate the lies…

Smh.

The President who got caught selling high powered assault weapons to drug cartels in Mexico lecturing us on gun safety.

The only individuals in this whole mess who need to have their guns banned work for the government.

I don’t know about any of you but their coming at us in unprecedented ways here and accelerating it getting more reckless and assertive. I’m done talking to the choir as we sit here at our keyboards thinking we’re making a change by communicating with each other that are in agreement here while every day Obama tightens his grip on lawful American citizens. people, they are taking lawful firearms from good law abiding citizens due to a single prescription? Marriage counseling? How many in our majority have not ever gone to counseling or received a prescription from their doctor, especially after Obama’s first 4 years? How much more are we going to allow them to continue weakening us? This man has 4 more years so you all will have to make a decision at some point.

Tangerinesong on April 11, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Allah, I don’t know what gun shows you’ve attended, but it is certainly possible to purchase fully automatic firearms at a gunshow. But you must have a class III weapons license to do so. And, of course, the 7 page or so background check still applies.

Cops just erroneously suspended the CCW licence and ordered a man to turn in his guns in NY.

‘I think that first and foremost, it stems from a flawed law that was passed so quickly without forethought on how something would be implemented. Certainly, I am disappointed on the fact that we were given information from State Police that this was an individual that we needed to act immediately on.

Previously we received correspondence from the State Police that a pistol permit holder in our County had a mental health condition that made them a potential harm to themselves or others, a provision in the NY SAFE Act that requires suspension of their pistol permit license.

When the State Police called to tell us they made a mistake and had the wrong person…it became clear that the State did not do their job here, and now we all look foolish.

Until the mental health provisions are fixed, these mistakes will continue to happen.’

– Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs, Erie, New York

But, don’t worry. Something similar will not happen to you. The Feds and the states PINKY PROMISE!

You don’t need a Class III license to buy a full-auto firearm. You do need a Class III license if you want to take delivery of the firearm immediately. Otherwise you have to wait out the FBI background check (not just an NICS check).

novaculus on April 11, 2013 at 6:40 PM

novaculus on April 11, 2013 at 5:19 PM

My understanding is that, in the 79 years since the NFA was passed, legally-owned and -registered machine guns have been used in precisely… two murders. One of which involved a police officer who used his department-issued submachine gun. So, yeah, their use in crime is virtually non-existent.

I’ll try to find the cite for the above info.

The fact that you’re discussing such intricate details of Class III weapons laws only highlights the sheer ignorance of those who claim to have some professional competency to tell us about gun ‘facts’ on television, as if they’d, as implied in their job descriptions, done extensive research before opening their knob-slobberers.

ROCnPhilly on April 11, 2013 at 8:06 PM

catmman on April 11, 2013 at 6:06 PM

No. A buyer does not have to have any sort of FFL. The seller has to have Class III in addition to his standard FFL.

The buyer just has to jump through a lot of hoops, pay the $200.00 transfer tax up front…and wait, for six to ten months at this time, for his approval from ATF.

Solaratov on April 11, 2013 at 9:48 PM

…and wait, for six to ten months at this time, for his approval from ATF.

The reason that it’s been taking so long is that one of their clerks retired and another left on maternity leave…and there was a hiring freeze in place, so they couldn’t be replaced.

Word around the campfires, though, is that the hiring freeze for that office has been lifted — so there’s hope that the wait will be more like two to four months.

Solaratov on April 11, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Q: When was the last time an Al Qaeda terrorist illegally bought a gun in the US, under current law, and used it to murder Americans in the US?

A: That has never happened.

Q: Would Al Qaeda have an interest in disarming US citizens?

A: Why yes. Isn’t that obvious?

“Morning Joe” fails basic logic, again.

Q: When was the last time the US government sold guns to murderous foreign drug cartels with a significant presence in the US who used them to murder a US citizen?

A: The Obama admin did that. The operation was called Fast and Furious.

“Morning Joe” also fails at connecting inconvenient dots.
