CNN’s Tapper covers free-speech fight of Fox News reporter

posted at 10:01 am on April 9, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Jazz covered the case of Jana Winter on Saturday, which made Hot Air one of the more unique news outlets in America. Normally when a reporter gets threatened with jail time for refusing to cough up a source in court, media outlets across the nation make it into a cause célèbre. Not this time, though, which has CNN’s Jake Tapper a little curious, to say the least.  He asks Matthew Cooper, who got much more support from his colleagues in the Valerie Plame case, “Where is the public outrage?”

In part, the lack of interest in Winter’s plight might be due to the question Tapper poses to Cooper.  He asks whether the public appreciates that the press holds public officials accountable for their actions — which is certainly the case with Winter, who gave the first indication that the police may have ignored the threat of the Aurora shooter,  which was confirmed last week in court documents.  The public, though, has grown tired of the selective accountability applied by many media outlets and reporters, although Jake Tapper has long been a somewhat more rare example of integrity in that department.

Mostly, though, it’s clear that other news outlets don’t like Fox News and won’t bother to rush to their assistance.  The Daily Beast links to the Daily Caller’s research on coverage in mainstream media outlets, noting the disparity in interest between Winter’s case and similar such threats in the past:

The saga has also become something of a cause célèbre on the right, with bloggers and conservative commentators arguing that the case has not received the attention it deserves because Winter works for Fox, instead of, say, The New York Times or CBS. The conservative website The Daily Caller noted that The Times has yet to write a single article on the subject, even though the paper’s own former reporter, Judith Miller, went to jail for 85 days in 2005 for refusing to disclose the name of an anonymous source. And the conservative website The Independent Journal Review ran a story about the trial under the headline “Liberal News Silent As Fox News Reporter Jana Winter Faces Jailtime.”

“I think this is something that journalists, regardless of the outlet you work for, should be concerned about,” said conservative blogger Matt K. Lewis. “I certainly hope that the fact that she is from Fox News isn’t impacting the coverage you see from other outlets. I would hope that we would see more journalists stepping forward.”

I’d hope that too.  It seems their outrage is as selective as their mission for accountability.

Lefty journos don’t think the First Amendment extends to Fox News. Kind of like how they don’t think the Second Amendment extends to us commoners.

Liberals = hypocrites. Why is anyone surprised?

Being a reporter doesn’t give you license to withhold evidence in a criminal investigation.

“I promised not to tell” is not an excuse.

Stop hoping, you know it’s true.

Many prospective job candidates who have worked at FOX are often blacklisted from being employed at other (liberal) media companies.

Because there is drive to outlaw guns and their accessories, and the knowledge that the shooter was insane and obviously so was ignored by the “authorities”; kind of destroys the meme that guns and only guns are to blame for the crime.

Stick with the agenda here please, first disarm the public, then….

I think the reason the MSM won’t circle the wagons like they did for David Gregory waving a rifle magazine deemed illegal in DC is not only because Winters works for Fox, but also because she damaged the gun-grabbers’ excuse for universal background checks. The grabbers all say they want to keep guns out of the hands of crazies, but the fact Aurora police did nothing when told about one shows how flawed the excuse really is.

There is no way Piers Morgan is going to allow a pro-gun rights advocate to say Morgan’s wish to ‘keep guns out of the hands of crazies’ is totally spurious and unworkable. Winters damaged the grabbers meme, and that can’t be allowed to stand or be noticed.

It would still extend to them, even so. Shows how well they understand the Constitution.

“Where is the public outrage?”

Locked in my closet, with my emptied camera and my copy of (insert low information journalism outlet here) asking Dear Leader what it’s like to be a sex symbol.

You built this low information America, journalism industry. Live with it…in prison if you must.

I give journalists and whomever a pass when they “out” a bureaucrat or a politician…I don’t believe the same rules of law apply to them, all’s fair in exposing them and their thievery/conniving/lying/ ways…

If you serve the public…you serve the public and at whatever bequests are made.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

The irony is striking…

This is a tough one. I’m all for the right of reporters to keep sources secret, but this is Faux-fricken-News. There’s a price to pay for working for an extremist propaganda source.

Liberals are indeed completely brainwashed individuals. Just change Fox News to CNN or any other liberal news outlet and they would be screaming bloody murder and demand the judge not jail her.

People, the majority is being repressed by the minority thinking they are a majority. After 4 years of my observing this nation go through levels of socio-anxiety, helplessness and depression, which are unprecedented in my life, there’s one thing the left forgot in their overplayed hand and exuberance…

The American People with the point of “we’ve had enough” passed long ago.

The outrage is there, it just isn’t being acknowledged and reported by the left wing media.

rplat on April 9, 2013 at 10:40 AM

I wonder if it’s Fox News as much as allowing the story she broke to get bigger news isn’t the real problem. Her story does help destroy the meme that there was nothing that could have been done to shop the shooter except for more gun control laws.

Either way, it’s an agenda item for Pravda and Izvestia.

No evidence was withheld. Someone in the case violated the judge’s gag order and he wants to know who. It’s petty bullsh!t.

alwaysfiredup on April 9, 2013 at 10:44 AM

the public doesn’t care because they understand the news media both sides are nothing more than pravda nowadays. there are no independent journalists. Bloggers are much more reporters than the MSM. The MSM doesn’t care because to them this is war and the fox reporters is just a captured enemy put down.

I don’t care because fox, CNN and MSNBC as well as the networks and newspapers lie everyday to us.

I really do like Jake Tapper – someone at CNN deserves a bonus for the idea of trying to get him. Sure, he’s a member of the LSM, but at least by their standards he’s as good as they get.

Tapper was / is the only one who would ask a serious question or one that was not a set up question for Dear Leader in those few press conferences President Transparency has bestowed upon us. And he is the only one who doesn’t let Carnhole spin his lies.

I believe CNN lured him away to get away from exposing the Emperor anymore, and if his career gets torpedoed because he chose lowly CNN- well thats just show biz.

A Pravda Mission Accomplished.

The sad part is Tapper getting accolades for being one of the few journalists actually doing his job, which journos are supposedly paid to do.

When you have to praise a reporter for doing the job of objective journalism, you know just how low the bar is set.

THEY ARE OUTRIGHT MURDERERS!!!

The Media gave aid and comfort to The Terrorist Enemies in the Iraq and were the DIRECT CAUSE of Hundreds of Innocent Americans being murdered there…….we can start with their “reporting” on Murtha’s Lies about Haditha and go on from there……

The head of CNN ADMITTED that they deliberately withheld news about Saddam violating people’s human rights and his plans to murder innocent Iraqis in a bid to ensure “face tine” with him…
