Showdown: DWS vs. Beyoncé on Cuba trip

posted at 8:41 pm on April 9, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

In one corner, a woman who never met a microphone she didn’t love, known for her striking hairstyles and repetition of catchy, simple, often nonsensical phrases. And, in the other, Beyoncé.

It’s not just Republican lawmakers raising their eyebrows at the vacation recording artists Jay-Z and Beyoncé took to Cuba this week. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is head of the Democratic National Committee, but also represents a chunk of Miami and many Cuban-American voters:

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston said Tuesday she’d like to know more about the recent Cuba visit by mega-entertainers Beyoncé and Jay-Z…

“I’m absolutely uncomfortable with the way, and concerned about, how not just Jay-Z and Beyoncé but some of the travel, the ‘people to people’ travel, that has been occurring in Cuba, has resulted,” Wasserman Schultz said in a brief interview Tuesday with the Sun Sentinel.

“I would be interested to know what type of people to people qualifying activity they did during their trip. The travel that exists in Cuba that was allowed by the Obama administration was specifically to make sure that you could have educational opportunities and there is supposed to be interaction at every step of a trip between the participants and the Cuban people. And I hope that that happened with this particular trip. We need to make sure that people to people travel complies with the law,” she said.

The Carters—the couple’s legal, married name—made headlines by spending their fifth anniversary in the lovely communist regime to the south. This trip would have had to have been approved by the United States government as what they call “people-to-people” contact— an allegedly educational exception the Obama administration has carved out of the U.S.’s ban on tourism to the country. These visits, however, are anything but educational unless you’re looking to learn how super-fantastic the communist propaganda machine is at using fabulously clueless celebrities to distract from the suffering of its people and the repression it imposes upon them. Alberto de la Cruz of Babalu Blog explains what the two stars saw, and what was hidden from them.

The only Cuban people Beyonce and Jay-Z had contact with were officials and puppets of the Castro dictatorship. They dined at the famous La Guarida restaurant, a supposedly “private” establishment that is in reality owned by Castro regime officials. They attended a performance of the children’s show La Colmenita, a government-run Castro propaganda extravaganza that is borderline child abuse for its blatant exploitation of children. They visited an art college where the only artists allowed to attend must be revolutionary artists and any attempts at free artistic expression are punished by at best, expulsion, and at worst, imprisonment. Beyonce and Jay-Z toured the streets of Old Havana escorted by agents of the regime’s East German Stasi-trained State Security, who pretended to control the crowds the government most likely bussed in for a photo opportunity as they have done so often in the past. A video showed Beyonce dancing salsa to a Celia Cruz song in a trendy apartheid establishment prohibited to typical Cubans, utterly oblivious to the fact that Celia Cruz, a Grammy winning fellow artist, had years ago been denied permission to enter Cuba to bury her deceased mother. And most telling and incriminating of all, neither of these two prominent black Americans were allowed by the regime to visit with or utter a single public word of support for Cuba’s imprisoned and repressed black dissidents.

With so much photographic and video evidence, one can almost say that Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Cuba vacation fiasco has done an incredibly effective job of exposing the absurdity of Obama’s Cuba travel policy. Over the years, few Americans have been able to comprehend the fatal flaws in this policy, but when you see two of America’s most prominent music industry titans being played like fiddles by the Castro regime, it becomes a lot easier to realize.

At the same time Beyonce and Jay-Z were being generously shuttled between Cuba’s few destinations sanitized of squalor or dissent for them, just miles away, activists the Ladies in White were holding a regular march and prayer for political prisoners. Sixty of them were arrested for this peaceful protest. Now, meeting them would have been an educational person-to-person contact, enlightening the Carters to the plight of so many in Cuba, who are oppressed for their beliefs, their art, and their skin color.

Celebrities are often silly. They’re also often professing their deep concern for the plight of those less fortunate. But my how they have a blind spot when it comes to dictators of liberal-approved experiments in collectivism. Sometimes sticking up for those less fortunate requires a modicum of Googling before venturing to a fairly notoriously repressive society, for Beysus’ sake. This isn’t the first time Beyonce’s been fooled, either. She reportedly took at least $1 million to perform for Muammar Qaddafi several years ago, later repenting by giving the money to Haiti earthquake relief. Perhaps this time she can fork over the cost of her trip to freedom activists trying to right this beautiful island’s ugly system.

For more on the Cuban-American perspective on this trip, and why even DWS is asking questions, listen to this short radio interview with de la Cruz. For more on Beyonce’s ignorance of the scourge of zombie Communists and insult-to-injury sartorial choices while abroad, read our friend E.M. Zanotti.

“You who have been following the Obama’s administrations efforts to re-instill relations with Cuba, should be mortified to know that Cuba still to this day harbors many fugitives in that country that have committed the most heinous of crimes. In New Jersey, Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, was convicted of murdering New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster during a shoot-out on the New Jersey Turnpike on May 2, 1973. She was pulled over for a routine traffic stop, wherein Chesimard and fellow members of the radical Black Liberation Army opened fire on Foerster and another State Trooper.
Chesimard killed Foerster “execution style”, shooting him in the head as he lay wounded by gunfire.

There are more than 70 American fugitives in Cuba a thaw in the nearly 50-year-old freeze between the United States and Cuba, without sanctions, is unacceptable.”

Lawmakers’ Cuba concerns are misplaced

In Havana, the seven Democrats visited the families of the prisoners and came away inspired. The members of Congress raised concerns about human rights, lengthy prison sentences and the suffering on both sides of the Florida Straits.

One vowed to write a letter to first lady Michelle Obama, pleading to her sensibilities as a mother, wife and lawyer. Another called on compassion. This is the time, the members of the Congressional Black Caucus proclaimed.

If only the group had met with even one prisoner of conscience or one of the wives, mothers, daughters or sisters of the 75 independent journalists, librarians and human-rights advocates imprisoned in Cuba’s ”Black Spring” of 2003. They would have easily spotted the Ladies in White in Havana on Palm Sunday, walking in protest to raise awareness about their men’s harsh sentences for daring to think outside the communist box of limitations.

ON HUNGER STRIKE

Or the seven could have traveled three hours from Havana to see the hunger-striking dissidents led by Jorge Luis ”Antúnez” Garcia in Placetas. Or they could have asked to see Oscar Elias Biscet, a doctor serving 25 years in prison for following the peaceful resistance of Martin Luther King Jr.

Or what of the mothers of three young men who were tried in a day and killed the next by firing squad in 2003 for trying to hijack a ferry from Havana Harbor? No passenger was hurt, but that didn’t stop the Cuban government from sending a swift and terrifying message to the country’s Afro-Cuban masses.

But no.

The black U.S. lawmakers’ concerns weren’t for the 300-plus Cuban prisoners of conscience listed by Amnesty International or the hundreds of dissidents working from their homes under the watch of a totalitarian regime. Or the lack of civil rights in a country with a majority black and mixed-race population ruled by an overwhelmingly white gerontocracy.

Their angst was for the ”Five Heroes,” as Cuba’s controlled media calls the Cuban government spies captured in Miami, including one sentenced for conspiracy to murder the four Brothers to the Rescue pilots killed by Cuban fighter planes in 1996.

Let’s agree that basic human rights have to be upheld for enemies — that’s the very definition of justice.

Where’s the justice in Cuba?

Certainly the Clueless Seven, led by Rep. Barbara Lee of California, didn’t make a fuss about 50 years of the Castro brothers’ rule, the human rights violations or the escalating and disproportionate number of black Cubans held behind bars. Indeed, Rep. Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther, could only show his empathy ”for the suffering of political prisoners,” as he referred to the five spies.

Just once, I’d like to see a delegation of muckety-mucks see the real Cuba. Sure, talk with Tío Fidel, as three of the Clueless reportedly did during their trip that ended Tuesday. But also go see opposition members, feel their pain.

Rep. Kendrick Meek, who was traveling the Panhandle Tuesday in his U.S. Senate bid, offered this wise analysis of his Black Caucus colleagues’ ”fact-finding” mission:

‘THREAT TO SECURITY’

”Political prisoners jailed in Cuba are held for peacefully expressing their rights and freedoms, like Dr. Oscar Biscet and Antúnez,” he said. ”The Cuban spies held in the U.S. federal prisons were a threat to our national security. That’s the difference between night and day.”

Had the Clueless Seven removed the blinders they would have known it.

“I’m absolutely uncomfortable with the way, and concerned about, how not just Jay-Z and Beyoncé but some of the travel, the ‘people to people’ travel, that has been occurring in Cuba, has resulted,” Wasserman Schultz said in a brief interview Tuesday with the Sun Sentinel

Could we het a DWS to English translator in here? I’m pretty sure this entire quote is nonsensical. Of course, so is pretty much everything DWS says.

Can we put Hannity in the boiling oil, water moccasin pool?
He’s almost as grating as Nancy Pelosi.

If this cuba trip and the Gaddafi concert is the worst you have on Beyonce in this hyper invasive age then I don’t know…I think that’s a pretty good record for a global celebrity.

Performing for human butchers “pretty good record”

What a damning confession.

I’m guessing she couldn’t work the Assad family into her busy schedule?

slickwillie2001 on April 9, 2013 at 10:28 PM

I’m not objective when it comes to Beyonce. She can do no wrong in my eyes. I admit it.

libfreeordie on April 9, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Yeah. Fellow travelers and all that.

stvnscott on April 9, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Hope this does us all a favor and makes Beyonce the Dixie Chicks of the pop/hip-hop scene. Never to be heard from again.

Hooray for Our Idiot President and his Idiot Entertainers, supporting the racist/Marxist regime of oppressors in apartheid Cuba.

I hold the retarded artists blameless, though … after all the time (and our money) they have spent in the company of O’Bozo, they probably couldn’t tell the difference between Washington and Havana. A seamless transition from one propaganda operation to the other and back. More humid, older limos, otherwise … huh.

Jaibones on April 9, 2013 at 10:59 PM

I’m not objective …

No, just stupid and blind.

no…

I like the guy, he’s got more class than anyone on the left.

mark81150 on April 10, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Another example of the Liberal exception to hating the 1%, if you are in the Obama cult, you are graced and without sin.

That they chose to party in a nation prison state and ignore the vast suffering there as the expensive Champagne flowed, tells you volumes about how utterly clueless the entertainment people are in their highly selective morality.

Lib thinks she can do no wrong?

If she endorsed and campaigned for a republican, his head would explode4 in outrage.

Does he know how many good democrat liberals were paid to play in “Sun City” South Africa during it’s whites only rule days? I doubt it, and doubt it’d bother him at all. The left only demands high moral standards of us, never their own.

mark81150 on April 10, 2013 at 12:28 AM

One of these days one of these famous slugs is going to take one for the team and then there will be an international incident much bigger than this melodrama.

HopeHeFails on April 10, 2013 at 1:11 AM

Frankly, it would have been very amusing to see someone at the State Department take action in this case and revoke the passports of Beyonce and Jay-Z WHILE they were still in Cuba.

As in “You’re stuck there, bunkies! Welcome to your new home!”

Then you would see both these certified divas get a lesson in how things REALLY ARE in Cuba these days like no one ever has!

pilamaye on April 10, 2013 at 5:46 AM

What a hoot! Would those two also have appeared in South Africa during Apartheid? That’s the dirty little secret that American Leftists do not want exposed – the rampant racism in “Cuber”. BUT, other than THAT, those 1953 Chevy taxi cabs are pretty spiffy!
*chuckle*
As for Dumb Debbie WashingSchultz: it’s all for show. She couldn’t care less.
(except at election time of course)
