Poll: Obama underwater on his handling of gun policy?

posted at 10:41 am on April 9, 2013 by Allahpundit

Run away, red-state Democratic incumbents. Run away.

Actually, he’s been underwater on guns since January, when another CNN poll showed him at 46/49. Today? 45/52. Despite three months of increasingly shrill messaging about how people who disagree with him on this issue are basically pro-murder, he’s lost a little ground.

o-guns

The key number in any poll like this is how much a president’s own base is driving down his numbers because, contra his opponents who think he’s gone too far, they think he hasn’t gone far enough. Here you’ve got 23 percent of liberals (albeit with a large margin of error) disapproving of O’s handling of gun policy, which surprises me. I could understand objecting if he had sat back and done nothing to help Senate Democrats move a bill through, but he’s rarely been louder on an issue than he’s been on this lately. Unless there’s a core group of liberals who object to expanding background checks or banning assault weapons on civil-liberties grounds, which I doubt, then presumably they’re disgruntled because he hasn’t asked for a comprehensive ban on handguns generally or semiautomatics specifically. That’s … really stupid given the political realities that O’s facing, but all presidents have to deal with partisans on their own side who disapprove of them as a squish and a sellout no matter how far they’re reaching. Case in point, compare the numbers for liberals on how Obama’s handling immigration:

o-imm

Almost identical. Liberal disgruntlement is more understandable here since O has sat back on immigration — for strategic reasons, so as not to upset the Gang of Eight’s work — and has made vague noises about improving border security, but the odds of legalizing 11 million illegals have never been better than they are right now. You’d think open-borders fans would give him some credit. In fact, if you scroll through CNN’s crosstabs, you’ll find 20-30 percent disapproval among liberals of O’s handling of any issue, including his policy on gays and lesbians. I’d love to know what more they want him to do there. He endorsed gay marriage publicly, triggering a tidal wave among Senate Democrats, and is trying to get DOMA declared unconstitutional. He’s even given up on his phony federalism approach to SSM. What more do the liberal holdouts want? Mandatory gay marriage?

Anyway. Even if you include the far-left grumblers as supporting the gun-control measures that O’s pushed thus far, he’s still only at about 50/50 nationally on gun policy. Think Mark Pryor, Mary Landrieu, and other Blue Dogs facing reelection next fall will find comfort in that? Mike Bloomberg’s gun-control group is going to start assigning letter grades, a la the NRA, to recalcitrant lawmakers, but I can’t quite believe that’ll make a key difference if a post-reelection Obama bellowing daily about the monsters who oppose his agenda after a horrendous school shooting isn’t moving the dial. Via the Weekly Standard, watch below for his latest bon mot in case you missed it last night. He’d better be working hard on immigration behind the scenes, because if that ends up going down the tubes along with his gun program, there’ll be almost nothing left of his second term on domestic policy. I’ll leave you with this from Conn Carroll, explaining why few gun-rights supporters are inclined to trust Obama and his allies:

Since the current gun control proposals would do nothing to stop mass shootings, even if Obama’s gun control bill became law, more are bound to happen. And the deaths in those events will be no more or less tragic than the deaths at Columbine, Aurora, or Sandy Hook. The emotional appeal for “more” gun control will be the exact same. Anti-gun activists would just use those future tragedies to justify further gun restrictions. The logic of doing “just one thing” so a father does not have “to bury his child” simply has no end.

There was something special about the rat-eared devil standing in CT yesterday attacking the GOP for “playing politics” with the gun control discussion. He was, of course, surrounded by families of the Sandy Hook victims who agree with him and he brought them all to DC on Air Force One. Today, they’ll be on the hill for photo-ops of mothers clutching pictures of their dead children demanding to know why Senator X isn’t onboard with gutting the Constitution.

I’m not surprised at the hypocrisy just that they are so emboldened they don’t even bother hiding who exactly is playing politics with the deaths of children. I can’t help but hate those greiving parents a bit for the way they are exploiting the death of one of their children to further a political agenda.

And BTW, not one of these things that is being proposed would have saved one of their children on that awful day or one less murder in Chicago. The proposed legislation just makes it harder for law-abiding citizens to own guns.

The next 3 1/2 years are gonna be a doozy. He’ll be lucky to get background checks passed by Congress. Amnesty is 50/50 and likely won’t be helped by the revelation that the bill coming out of the Senate is 1500 pages! Obviously he doesn’t want to deal with the debt or the economy since those have been disasters since he took office. Obamacare is an atomic bomb about to drop on this country. So what does that leave? Gay marriage? Even an increasingly accepting public is gonna reach their limit with that issue if that’s all we hear about from this regime.

By the way, was it really Obama who “triggered” the wave? Seems to me the wave appeared the moment the Supreme Court got involved, not beforehand.

Every day the media spends talking about gun control is one less day the media spends talking about the economy, jobs, Benghazi, Obamacare taxes & regulatory madness, EPA and Interiors’s war on any domestic energy production not based on unicorn farts, Fast&Furious, Obama’s foreign policy genius, especially regarding Iran and the Middle East, the shameful wind-down to leaving Afghanistan with the job undone, etc.

“Gun control” is the new “squirrel”. And the media is happily taking the hint, pointing and screeching:

“Look! Squirrel!”

novaculus on April 9, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Except that Democrat Senators find ways of “going under the radar” on issues that their voters don’t favor, then vote for them AFTER the election. Look at the sudden support of Sen. Clare McCaskill (D-MO), Tim Johnson (D-SD), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) for gay marriage! McCaskill was content to watch Todd Akin implode on his rape comments and never said anything about gay marriage before the election, and neither did Heidi Heitkamp, who never could have won election in North Dakota if she had publicly declared herself for gay marriage. Tim Johnson was pretty much an absentee senator for two years after his stroke, but suddenly he’s BAAAAACK and declaring himself for gay marriage!

These are the tactics of Democrats, particularly candidates for Senate: pretend they’re “moderates” before the election, then tack hard left once they’ve won. Then about a year before their next election, move to the middle just long enough to fool the voters. The voters think they’re getting a “moderate” Senator, then they sleep for 5 years while their Senator votes hard left. And we wonder why states like MO, ND, SD, MT, WV, IN, and NC vote repeatedly for Republicans for President but have Democrat Senators.

You realize you linked a story about a sheriff’s deputy, right? It wasn’t his service weapon that killed her, but he wouldn’t be affected by any of your “the fewer guns, the better imho” legislation. He’d still have his service weapon, and he’d still handle it improperly.

Her death was caused by stupidity, and stupid can’t be legislated.

Imagine what that father must be feeling right now knowing all he had to do was follow basic gun safety rules. But he didn’t. I feel for him and the family, and especially the children. The loss of a loved one is never easy.

The fact remains that the children don’t have a mommy any more because the weapons weren’t secure (hint: that doesn’t mean “in a safe”). He was showing them off with a round in the chamber and children present.

Without offering any solution, screams: But somebody has to do something!

To people like this I say…What is right is often forgotten by those who will only do what is convenient.

and

As for quoting made-up polls: Only dead fish swim with the stream.

“Gun control” is the new “squirrel”. And the media is happily taking the hint, pointing and screeching:

“Look! Squirrel!”

Look at the bloc of stupid people that delivered a second term for the rat-eared devil. moronic women, the gays, and illegals. The illegals are getting amnesty, the sodomites are close to forcing churches marry them just like normal people, and the guns are a little something for women (it can’t all be about reproductive rights).

Doin’ the Snoopy Dance!

There are about 5 of them. Just like with our country, they’ve set out to ruin HotAir.

That’s what the human shit of Leftism does – ruin.

They are the rot of our country, and of HotAir.

To engage them is to validate and reinforce their presence on HotAir.

They are the enemy, and their presence on HotAir sickens me.

Two consecutive headlines on Drudge: Obama slams Republicans for gun reform ‘stunts’… Flies families of Newtown victims on Air Force One…

My can’t stand tank has been on fumes for over
four plus years.

Obama won’t go for strict penalties for an illegal gun used in the commission of a crime. 500 deaths last year in Chicago, where guns are outlawed and only outlaws have guns, but it isn’t “cool” to turn in the perps. Mrs. Obama went to the funeral of a young musician, Hadiya Pendleton, but still no call to put criminals in jail for a long long time. Mandatory sentencing no matter what your age. And the police have to start looking for the black market guns.

Obama, the carrion-feeding president, and the parents with him, yesterday, are the most despicable ghoulish people on Earth.

There is no shame and no decency left in the USA. Obama killed it all.

May he choke on all that carrion.

Underwater and sinking out of sight.

Obama and the commie Democrat Party are both lie based.

Hard to keep your head above water with feet of lie based concrete.

They lost the House due to the lies.

They got Obama in by lies.

All lies.

nonpartisan on April 9, 2013 at 11:34 AM

So you refused to vote for Obama, right? Because a vote for Obama was a vote for arming Mexican drug cartels with automatic weapons to gun down civilians at will. But you knew that, right? That’s what you support, right?
