Emotional Newtown dad: More gun control is not the answer

posted at 8:01 pm on April 8, 2013 by Allahpundit

A perfect bookend to the Matt Salmon post. Here again you have someone who’s intimately involved with a raging national debate, whose personal story guarantees riveting television (watch to the end here, if you can stand it), yet who seemingly can’t get booked by news outfits apart from Fox because he’s unwilling to say what the host wants to hear. Tommy Christopher, Mediaite’s resident lefty columnist, wondered last week why Mattioli is nowhere to be found on television considering cable news’s otherwise relentless interest in gun control and Newtown. Clearly Mattioli has no objection in principle to appearing on TV; unless he has an “only Fox” rule that no one knows about then there’s only one explanation. Case in point: Where was he during the big “60 Minutes” feature last night on Newtown families’ feelings about gun control? I can understand why he’s not getting a ride on Air Force One today — Obama needs Newtown parents who are anti-gun for his moral-authority posturing — but “60 Minutes” is supposed to be journalism, sort of. Mattioli’s presence would have made for a compelling counterpoint last night. Where was he? Did he refuse to appear or was that segment transparently just propaganda for Obama’s gun-control push in Congress?

Speaking of which, big news this afternoon from Ben Howe:

Senator Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has confirmed he will filibuster new gun control legislation, spokesman Brian McGuire confirmed for me today.

“While nobody knows yet what Senator Reid’s plan is for the gun bill, if he chooses to file cloture on the motion to proceed to the Reid Bill (S. 649), Senator McConnell will oppose cloture on proceeding to that bill.”

That’s Schumer’s background-checks bill, which gun-rights supporters oppose on grounds that it’s a step towards a national gun registry. Time magazine reported days ago that it was likely to be filibustered; the fact that McConnell is now involved means it’s a cinch. Can’t wait to see how many red-state Democrats end up joining the party. Meanwhile, Joe Manchin is drafting a weaker bill with Pat Toomey that would require checks for all sales except those between family members and some hunters. There aren’t many details yet — presumably the record-keeping requirements are lighter — but it’ll be interesting to see if that bill gets filibustered too, especially since McConnell’s eager to show Kentucky primary voters how pro-gun-rights he is.

Short of seeing a Democratic bill pass, Obama probably prefers that Republicans filibuster everything that hits the floor. If they pass something weak, that complicates his 2014 message that the GOP refused to lift a finger to make gun regulations tighter after Newtown. Manchin and Toomey are supposed to announce something in the next 48 hours. Stay tuned. Exit quotation from O, who’s already seeing his reelection political capital melt away: “Some back in Washington are already floating the idea that they might use political stunts to prevent votes on any of these reforms. They’re not just saying they’ll vote ‘no’ on ideas that almost all Americans support. They’re saying they won’t allow any votes on them at all. They’re saying your opinion doesn’t matter. And that’s not right.”

Update: I knew he was desperate, but I didn’t really know.

Update: There’s no shortage of examples of the Salmon/Mattioli phenomenon, but here’s another in case you’re still looking.

Senator Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has confirmed he will filibuster new gun control legislation, spokesman Brian McGuire confirmed for me today.

This is why Rand Paul is backing McConnell in Kentucky. At least until 2014, he will be on his best behavior. With the minority leader on board with the filibuster, McCain looks even more irrelevant.

When we are saddened by a passing tragedy we must rip the Constitution into hankies so we can wipe away our tears.

Connecticut had an assault weapons ban in effect on the day of the Newtown shooting.

You’ve been asked: How would any of the proposed gun laws prevented Newtown?

You can either answer, as even Senator Blumenthal has and that is by admitting none of them would have prevented Newtown, or you can do your best Hillary Clinton impersonation and scream:

‘What difference, at this point, does it make?’

She uttered that following the deaths of four Americans, including the first Ambassador killed in the line of duty since 1979, and the maiming of dozens more.

No it doesn’t. When a man kills someone, he has a right to a trial by his peers. He has a right to face his accusers. He has a right to be represented by counsel. If you really cared about your child’s life in the role of a rational and responsible parent you would never so blithely dismiss the muniments of our freedom, rather you would call for the fuller and more robust exercise of the 2nd Amendment. Only an armed citizen would have saved those children.

It’s not a Constitution of a dream, it’s a reality, and it is the greatest protection of life and liberty ever known to a society.

I know you’re trying, and I appreciate the effort, but it’s sort of like watching a man with no arms and legs trying to stay afloat in the ocean.

Of the many proposals you speak of, exactly what proposals are you talking bout?

The number of laws already on the books that didn’t work?

Or the numerous other laws being proposed that even Joe Biden said wouldn’t have stopped the tragedy st Sandy Hook?

Columbine occurred five years Fett the ’94 AWB. You speak of the proposals, name them. Demonstrate how they would work. Show us your facts to back up the implementation of such laws. What would work. please elaborate.

Some may consider that extreme but my own child’s life trumps any constitution you all can dream of.

Would you also argue that the 4th Amendment be trumped in favor of your child’s safety? Can we assume that you would take no issue with the government entering your home without a warrant to ensure that your neighbor’s children are safe in their beds? Or do you only selectively support the civil rights that suit your own ideology?

You have just eagerly expressed that you are more than willing to trample the rights of others to “feel” safe and secure.

If you trust the state this much; if you put safety and security above your own freedom…then you are truly nothing but a ward of the state.

BUSTED: GABBY GIFFORDS WITH AR-15
Another Liberal hypocrite busted . . .
***************************************

In response to the exploitative political scheming of Mark Kelly, persons connected to Congresswoman Giffords released this photo in response to what they perceived to be her husband’s hypocrisy.

Mark Kelly’s campaign against “assault weapons” such as the AR-15 rifle has sparked a local backlash. On March 13, a Tucson, Arizona radio host published a photograph of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords holding an AR-15 rifle at a gun range. Giffords has since confirmed that the photograph is authentic.

Subsequently, Breitbart News confirmed the authenticity of the image through law enforcement sources in Arizona, and obtained a copy of the photograph from a source who requested anonymity.

The latter source was present when the photograph was taken, and said that Giffords had requested it for campaign purposes during October 2010.

According to the source, the image sent to Breitbart News was cropped to protect the identity of the person on the right-hand side of the original photograph (to Giffords’s left).

The source, who is a member of the law enforcement community, told Breitbart News:

“We were told she wanted to toughen her image. She asked to come out and she wanted to shoot a rifle. She had one of our guys out there to show her how to shoot an AR-15.”

In January 2011, Giffords suffered near-fatal wounds in a mass shooting while meeting with constituents in Tucson. The perpetrator used a 9mm Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol.

Giffords and husband Mark Kelly have since formed an organization, Americans for Responsible Solutions, to press for policy changes such as limiting the sale of “assault weapons, ” including the AR-15.

Back to the Chicago talking point i see.

Anyway,in my neighborhood, we have been losing kids to gun violence for decades. I bet you have never seen a little kid choking in his own blood 10 seconds after being shot in the neck.

I bet you have never seen a kid’s head completely blown off with a sawed off shot gun. I HAVE.

Then again, it was only a matter of time before the violence affected not only the urban communities but also the “gated” communities.

HotAirLib on April 8, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Next, HAL will be telling us that his child’s ‘right’ not to get his feelings hurt trump the free speech rights of 310 million Americans.

But, but, but, the Second Amendment applies only to militias, not the people!!!

Wrong.

From a liberal writer at the Daily Kos:

Liberals can quote legal precedent, news reports, and exhaustive studies. They can talk about the intentions of the Founders. They can argue at length against the tyranny of the government. And they will, almost without exception, conclude the necessity of respecting, and not restricting, civil liberties.

Except for one: the right to keep and bear arms.

When it comes to discussing the Second Amendment, liberals check rational thought at the door. They dismiss approximately 40% of American households that own one or more guns, and those who fight to protect the Second Amendment, as “gun nuts.” They argue for greater restrictions. And they pursue these policies at the risk of alienating voters who might otherwise vote for Democrats.

And they do so in a way that is wholly inconsistent with their approach to all of our other civil liberties.

Those who fight against Second Amendment rights cite statistics about gun violence, as if such numbers are evidence enough that our rights should be restricted. But Chicago and Washington DC, the two cities from which came the most recent Supreme Court decisions on Second Amendment rights, had some of the most restrictive laws in the nation, and also some of the highest rates of violent crime. Clearly, such restrictions do not correlate with preventing crime.

So rather than continuing to fight for greater restrictions on Second Amendment rights, it is time for liberals to defend Second Amendment rights as vigorously as they fight to protect ALL of our other rights. Because it is by fighting to protect each right that we protect ALL rights.

And this is why:

No. 1: The Bill of Rights protects individual rights.

If you’ve read the Bill of Rights — and who among us hasn’t? — you will notice a phrase that appears in nearly all of them:

“THE PEOPLE.”

First Amendment:

“…the right of the people peaceably to assemble…”

Second Amendment:

“A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Fourth Amendment:

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects…”

Ninth Amendment:

“…shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people…”

Tenth Amendment:

“…are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

Certainly, no good liberal would argue that any of these rights are collective rights, and not individual rights. We believe that the First Amendment is an individual right to criticize our government.

We would not condone a state-regulated news organization. We certainly would not condone state regulation of religion. We talk about “separation of church and state,” although there is no mention of “separation of church and state” in the First Amendment.

But we know what they meant. The anti-Federalists refused to ratify the Constitution without a Bill of Rights; they intended for our rights to be interpreted expansively.

We believe the Founders intended for us to be able to say damn near anything we want, protest damn near anything we want, print damn near anything we want, and believe damn near anything we want. Individually, without the interference or regulation of government.

And yet, despite the recent Heller and McDonald decisions, liberals stumble at the idea of the Second Amendment as an individual right. They take the position that the Founders intended an entirely different meaning by the phrase “the right of the people” in the Second Amendment, even though they are so positively clear about what that phrase means in the First Amendment.

If we can agree that the First Amendment protects not only powerful organizations such as the New York Times or MSNBC, but also the individual commenter on the internet, the individual at the anti-war rally, the individual driving the car with the “Fvck Bush” bumper sticker, can we not also agree that the Second Amendment’s use of “the people” has the same meaning?

A Daily Kooks Writer Argues: Why Liberals Should Love The Second Amendment??? You Betcha!
