Republican lawmakers wonder: Why are Beyoncé and Jay-Z vacationing in Cuba?

posted at 2:01 pm on April 7, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

I must admit that I’m not usually one to keep up with celebrities or with trendy vacation fads.  Even if I was more hip, I’d put Havana way down the list of destinations if I had to pick a vacation spot for a relaxing, fun-filled getaway that didn’t involve the shameless exploitation of an oppressed people. That would be especially true if I was well known enough for the Castro regime to use my presence as a propaganda effort.

But hey, I guess I’m pretty unfashionable:

Beyonce and Jay-Z are the latest “tourists” to take advantage of the Obama administration’s eased , an island nation once off-limits to U.S. travelers. But some lawmakers are protesting the changes.

The power music couple was spotted strolling around Havana, the Communist nation’s capital today (Apr. 4). They chose to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary there.

The Obama administration eased travel restrictions, but only in a limited way.  It’s still illegal for US citizens to travel to Cuba solely for tourism; anyone applying to enter Cuba has to get a “cultural exchange” license.  It’s not difficult to see how two cultural/entertainment icons like Jay-Z and Beyoncé would have qualified for that kind of certification — but it’s very difficult to understand why they would have wanted to qualify in the first place.  What’s next, a tour of Pyonyang with Lil’ Kim for Beyoncé’s birthday?

Actually, as CNN reports, it’s not all that easy to qualify for the license, and the requirements don’t exactly resemble the itinerary reported by the media for the power couple:

In 2012 the Obama administration lifted some of the restrictions on travel to Cuba, instituting a “people-to-people” travel program that requires a strict itinerary for vacationers.

“Each traveler must have a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities that will result in meaningful interaction between the travelers and individuals in Cuba,” U.S. Treasury Department guidelines read.

Americans have been known to get around travel restrictions to Cuba in the past by stopping first in a country with flights to the island. Cuban customs officials are familiar enough with the practice to not stamp American passports when they cross their desks.

Yes, but those Americans are (a) uninteresting to the mass media, and/or (b) smart enough not to court the media on their tour of the prison island.

At least two Republican lawmakers want answers about this “educational exchange”:

Two Republican lawmakers are asking a government agency to look into a recent trip to Cuba by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, suggesting the superstar couple violated restrictions on travel to the communist island.

“Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime touted it as such in its propaganda,” Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, both of Florida, wrote in the letter to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Oh, I don’t know if this is so far off the mark.  I’m certainly getting an education in the values of the entertainment industry.  Via Twitchy, some wonder whether Barack Obama is learning a lesson here, too, as well as the two “tourists”:

Lori Ziganto reminds us that the Obamas will have an opportunity to ask this themselves when Beyoncé comes to the White House for Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday party later this year.  Perhaps it’s time for the White House to consider a “cultural exchange” and change the entertainment line-up.

Considering how discriminatory the Cuban regime is to minorities and their overall fascist and corrupt nature, it makes perfect sense for left wing elites to party in Cuba.

The premises are always wrong when writing about Obama.

Look, he might have sent a message with that idiot who went to Cuba.

Shortly afte his return the corpulent idiot with those weird hands started to grumble.

Then Obama hands him dough, they both tell the world how ‘peaceful’ they are and the domestic/other woes are covered up, for a time.

These are the new ‘ambassadors’ of the US.

The land is a latrine, full of rats. Obama and his live the lives of the .0001%rs and laugh at you.

Liberals are just mad they can’t change the subject very well..

A black Cuban author, Roberto Zurbano, whose scathing criticism of racism on the island was published in The New York Times last month, has been demoted from his top job at the government-controlled Casa de las Americas book publishers.

“To question the extent of racial progress was tantamount to a counterrevolutionary act,” the dreadlocked Zurbano wrote. “This made it almost impossible to point out the obvious: racism is alive and well.”

Zurbano’s case reflects the growing black-rights movement in Cuba, where 35 percent of its 11 million people are black or mestizo, at a time when its activists are complaining that Raúl Castro’s open-market economic reforms favor whites unfairly.

If you were honest you admit these fallacious tactics are beneath a supposed professor. ES Perv.

Don’t even go to moral convictions:

But I have a hard time getting too upset about a 45 year old guy and a 16 year old guy having sex. Maybe its because when I was under 18 (17 to be exact) I had a bit of an affair with an older man (early 30s)…and it was AWESOME. ….. Like…how does a “vulnerable” 16 year old find their way onto a gay sex chat-line anyway?

Yet I find their support of a President who uses his success story as an “oppression story” to be hilarious. They make their money off of America’s first amendment and decidedly lack of racism, and yet they vacation in a spot that routinely oppresses blacks and jails artists for freedom of expression. What about places that are nominally democratic but are actually brutally repressive oligarchies, like much of Central America. Should we go to Guatemala?

In South Africa there was a consensus boycott and the appearance of J-B would have perhaps been a significant development (although Paul Simon played Sun City, FWIW). There is no boycott in Cube, J-B’s appearance is not economically or politically significant.

I believe we are talking about the morality of travel to certain countries, because apparently J-B got their visas all legal and everything, so you have no leg to stand on based on government travel restrictions.

See above. It was a legal visit. What are you upset about if not the idea that friends of Obama went to visit evil CastroLand?

urban elitist on April 7, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Leftists are nothing if not relativists.

You are all for tyranny, never truly liberal/progressive, never.

haven’t seen a thread on libfree’s age of consent opinions. When I do, perhaps I’ll weigh in. In the mean time, bringing up irrelevancies is generally a sign that your argument is weak.

Propagandizing how to be black and gay in America today, or related.

Schadenfreude on April 7, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Umm no, we are talking about GOPers who want an investigation into how they got their Visa’s which may or may not have been legal. If they got them through legal channels but did not utilize them as they were meant to be utilized then that is fraud.

Furthermore, the reason that there is restrictions on travel to Cuba is for moral reasons. Cuba oppressions etc. and the fact that stars are used for propaganda purposes. One of the reason it was Elian Gonzonles’ relatives fought his return to Cuba was the Castro administration’s use of public figures as propaganda.

melle1228 on April 7, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Right — we’re talking about GOPers trying to make political hay out of nothing. I’m glad we agree.

Yes. One country — and far from the worst offender — is singled out for completely useless and moronic travel restrictions, and it has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with morality.

I’ll bet you saw the Easter Bunny the other Sunday.
