Jake Tapper: Shouldn’t Obama and Bloomberg maybe learn the basics about guns before trying to regulate them?

posted at 5:21 pm on April 5, 2013 by Allahpundit

I’m upgrading this from the Greenroom, partly to correct my own oversight. Such is the media’s groupthink on gun control that even minor skepticism of the sort Tapper displays here is news coming from a non-Fox cable outfit. You’ll see gun-rights supporters on CNN and MSNBC as guests, i.e. foils for the host to display his/her moral righteousness, but for the host himself to challenge gun-grabbers on their ignorance is unusual — even though regulation based on ignorance in other contexts is eagerly derided. There are, simply, certain Things That Are Not Said. The most basic fact-checking of a Democratic sacred cow now qualifies as a noteworthy breach of protocol.

Beyond that, I need to ‘fess up: Somehow, I missed the amazing clip here from December of Mike Bloomberg, who’s spending millions of dollars to defeat pols who oppose banning “assault weapons,” demonstrating that he doesn’t have the first farking clue what an “assault weapon” actually does. Apparently even pols who’ve made this their pet cause can’t be bothered to learn the difference between a machine gun and a semiautomatic. At least, that’s the charitable view; it could be that Bloomy, knowing how misleading yet politically valuable the term “assault weapon” is, was deliberately trying to confuse the public here and got caught by ABC’s reporter. Either way, amazing.

One footnote: Tapper forgot Diana DeGette.

YES!!!!!

But don’t forget the problem in that they THINK they know everything about everything. It is a classic for crooks to show up and just feast on fools with that type of hubris.

I head a rumor months ago that the snakes who tied Dear Leader into an electric car deal joked about naming a model the Mountebank and thought he and his people would think it was a name like the Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

I might disagree with the guy but who could be so rotten as to take money from his patronage and then make a fool of him and the administration? Getting the taxpayer to be the primary guarantor before going entirely out of business was the final dagger in the back. The sad fact that he has the best intentions in attempting to solve what he is convinced is a destructive environmental problem gives them the emotive lever that the firms seem to brandish like an ugly stick.

I couldn’t do that, regardless of my opinions of the program.

Now I also had Dems curse that surgeon who made some controversial remarks with POTUS on the dais. Well, unless they got the speaker to agree to censorship or a general gag order, that is another matter entirely.

Quirky people. You seem to gravitate toward bashing targets like Lohan, the First Lady, Sandra Fluke and even Jay Leno.

It is like the Dem’s knocking Mitt for the “binder” comment.

First, on Lohan, I never knew any young guys who got in fights, abused substances, wrecked cars, got busted, had a real and quick igniting love of crazy females (or any females), and fought like devils for the USA overseas. Never heard of a judge offering anyone the service or jail. Never. No — all my friends were choir boys.

On the First Lady, she made her mistakes but I think this administration gives enough of a target that you can go there and leave her alone. Dear Leader is a good focus for fire.

Fluke and Leno are rubber and anything you say just comes back on the stereotype the media is selling. The dirt is put right back at your door while they play the issue.

BTW, Dear Leader just put his foot in it by saying the Attorney General of California is the most attractive in the country. I wonder if he has a binder full of photos.

IlikedAUH2O on April 5, 2013 at 6:49 PM

The only basics they care about, or think about, are these.

- Guns are scary.
- People who buy and own guns are scary.
- People should not be able to own guns.

The only thing standing in their way is that pesky and annoying 2nd Amendment.

They are trying to ban ownership of guns that have been around for about a century — semi-automatics.

If they could have their way no one would own anything more than a single shot rifle or shotgun — something like a musket. When they say otherwise they are lying.

If we actually required politicians to know about the things they legislate about we wouldn’t have 99% of the laws on the books…

Hmmmm….

How about each one is required to go home to their district and explain each and every page of each and every bill before it can be voted on, instead? It would be cheap entertainment at the very least!

ajacksonian on April 5, 2013 at 7:41 PM

You mean like when they pass banking and finance laws they know something about banking and finance?

Or when they pass pollution laws they know something about chemistry or ecosystems?

Don’t be silly. A politician has only one job, and it’s not based on knowledge or experience about anything he/she’s legislating on. The only thing they need to do, the only thing that matters, is to get re-elected.

All they need to know about gun control laws is whether or not they further that particular goal.

Don’t go throwing the baby out with the bathwater. If you’re not willing to credit Jake for actions completely contrary to the group think outside Fox news, I think that’s kinda shortsighted. We complain about media bias, so it seems more exceptional than it should for something this innocuous to hit the airwaves.

It certainly could be an all out attempt by Jake to rattle some perceptions about what’s allowed wrt Obama and gin up some ratings in the process. The trick is to reward it and expect more. That’s the only hope we have of seeing something approaching fair coverage of the atrocious and blatant behavior of outright lies by proponents of gun control.

If you don’t like Jake Tapper, that’s fine, but he’s probably the most watchable CNN personality IMO (well he would be if I watched CNN). I’m with AP on missing that Bloomberg bungle. I’m sure he wishes it had stayed buried.

Really, if you think about it, there’s a lot of low hanging fruit for Jake when everyone but Fox is willing to pass up an obvious story thread like this.

CitizenEgg on April 5, 2013 at 8:32 PM

(Repeating my GR post because I’m too lazy to rewrite it;)

You have to understand the mindset at work.

The anti-gun liberal elite’ are also the anti-military liberal elite, and the “green” liberal elite, etc. You may have noticed, they are ignorant of those subjects as well. (Referring to Navy destroyers as “battleships”, insisting that nuclear reactors can blow up like fission bombs, etc.)

The reason for this is their self-assumed moral and ethical superiority. About 450 or so years ago, a cardinal of the Catholic Church refused to look through Galileo’s telescope to see the moons of Jupiter. Why? Because his interpretation of Scripture told him there was no such thing, and he wasn’t bout to let facts interfere with his dogmas.

It’s the same phenomenon at work. They are on a higher moral plane, and any actual knowledge of that which they regard as evil would sully their superior consciousness. All they know, or need to know, is that they hate it, and it therefore must be destroyed to create their Utopia.

And oh yes, anyone who does not share their “enlightenment” must also be destroyed, sooner or later. Because their Utopia cannot tolerate opinions contrary to their own. Keep in mind what the Church tried to do to Galileo, and what they absolutely did do to Giordano Bruno. And what Robespierre, Talleyrand, Marat & Co. did to anyone they suspected of not agreeing with them. And the Nazis, and Mao’s Red Guards, and on, and on, and on. It’s the same mindset at work. “Be enlightened like us- or die.

When gun-ban fanatics ask me why I won’t accept their version of “reasonable controls”, I tend to say something like this;

Throughout history, people on your side of the aisle have insisted that you are better, wiser, more moral, more sensitive, and just plain superior to all of the rest of us. And when you are not in power, if you don’t get your way, you invariably resort to violence, mostly against innocent bystanders. When you are in power, you use the threat of violence to cow everyone else into obedience.

The people running things right now are the leftovers of your Vietnam antiwar movement, who are directly responsible for the deaths of over a million people in Southeast Asia as a result of the Communist victory you helped engineer in the name of “peace”. Here in this country, you didn’t just protest; you bombed, robbed, and killed in the name of “peace”. You dreamed of herding 25 million Americans into death camps after your “triumph”, which thank G-d you never actually achieved.

More recently, you were all screaming “If our Messiah isn’t re-elected, we’re gonna RIOT!!!- and make the rest of us pay for our “lack of enlightenment”.

And oh yes, your environmental schemes will only work if you are willing to kill off about ninety percent of humanity. Which, to judge from your rhetoric (Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, etc.) you are absolutely willing to try.

And you want us to render ourselves defenseless. Against you.

Sorry. I’m not that big a damned fool.

The most basic fact-checking of a Democratic sacred cow now qualifies as a noteworthy breach of protocol.

This reminds me of a scene from Cheers years ago when Norm kept falling off his bar stool becasue Cliff offered to buy him a beer.

BuckeyeSam on April 5, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Well, automatic weapons, as we know, fire by themselves, that’s why they are “automatic”. They are like a TV remote that if you sit on it by accident, the TV channel will change to MSNBC, which shouldn’t happen to anyone, we know.

If you have a magazine they also load themselves automatically and fire disproportionately at minorities and children in gun-free zones. That’s how bad they are. It’s unacceptable.

As for background checks, these are currently to make sure that the owner is white and a nut-case, as in the Colorado shooting where Holmes had a note from his psychiatrist certifying that he was indeed homicidal and serious about owning rocket-propelled semi-automatic side-arms.

If only Republicans and their KKK supporters would agree to allow the president and his big sister Janet to personally pat down whitey-gone-wild-at-the-gun-show, we could all sleep peacefully in our beds with our loaded handguns under our pillows, safe in the knowledge that automatic weapons are not out there roaming the streets, especially targeting the disadvantaged and hardworking homeless minorities, through no fault of their own without adequate documentation.

Hope that this clears things up for you.

Awesome. It feels like it’s been ages since AP whipped out the old nuance.

Makes me nostalgic for the days when more or less every AP caption had that dryly sarcastic and bemused tone. And the single word “nuance” captured the zeitgeist better than any other.

Now I’m feeling excited about using the word “zeitgeist” for the first time ever.

This is what my life has come to…

Speaking of which – when was the last time it “came to this”? Feels almost as old as “nuance”.
