Did Obama tell a Democratic audience that a “fully automatic weapon” was used at Newtown?

posted at 2:01 pm on April 4, 2013 by Allahpundit

Either (a) O’s referring to a different shooting, which I doubt, (b) I missed a major update to the Newtown story, (c) he knows something we don’t, or (d) he has roughly the same mastery of gun fundamentals as magazine expert Diana DeGette. From last night’s DCCC fundraiser in San Francisco:

Now, over the next couple of months, we’ve got a couple of issues: gun control. (Applause.) I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don’t have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon — by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly.

Adam Lanza had an honest-to-goodness machine gun on him, not a Bushmaster semiautomatic? That’s … an important detail, but I haven’t heard it mentioned once in the news coverage I’ve seen about Sandy Hook. (Then again, it’s not unusual for the media to overlook certain facts on this topic.) According to every report I’ve seen, including the Hartford Courant’s story just this morning about Connecticut’s new gun law, Lanza carried an AR-15. If O thinks a fully automatic rifle was used — which would explain his recent refrain about “weapons of war” — why is he targeting semiautomatics? And why isn’t Piers Morgan talking about this every night as proof of how easy it is for nuts to get hold of guns that even most soldiers aren’t allowed to carry anymore?

That wasn’t the only bon mot last night. The Standard noticed this one from the same fundraiser:

Look, my intention here is to try to get as much done with the Republican Party over the next two years as I can, because we can’t have perpetual campaigns. And so I mean what I say. I am looking to find areas of common ground with Republicans every single day. I want to make sure that we’re working together to stabilize our finances. And I think actually that we can come up with a fiscal deal that instead of lurching from crisis to crisis every three months, we lay the groundwork for long-term growth — controlling our deficits, controlling our debt, but also making sure we can invest in our future. I want to get an immigration deal done. I want to find some common-sense gun safety legislation that we can get done. And I do believe that there are well-meaning Republicans out there who care about their kids just as passionately as we do.

Not all Republicans, mind you. Probably not even most. But the ones willing to vote for Obama’s agenda? Yeah, we can probably give them the benefit of the doubt on whether they love their kids as much as liberals. There’s no hard proof that they’re out there — it’s a matter of “belief” — but he’s staying optimistic. You can always count on O to be a bit more candid about his contempt for his opponents when he’s talking to a group of rich liberals.

Via Mediaite, here he is in Denver yesterday sneering at the idea that the U.S. government, which includes plenty of liberals like Jan Schakowsky and will eventually include plenty more if the Emerging Democratic Majority theory is correct, would ever conceive of taking people’s guns away.

To clarify my last post…..

I was not disagreeing or denigrating what you said in your post to RWM (I was going to post the same thing, but you beat me to it.)
I was simply adding to your post.

Well the low information types he is talking to are in a fit asking how on earth do we have all these weapons of war including automatic weapons? Obfuscate the truth and soon nobody questions/knows what is going on.

The operative word there was “act”.

As full autos are already banned, let’s do the obvious thing: double dog really-mean-it-this-time re-ban them and call it a legislative day.

Barnestormer on April 4, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Full automatics aren’t banned. They are just heavily-regulated by the Federal government.

Oh good. So you want to talk about mental illness and potentially bringing back involuntary institutionalization for those who need it? GREAT!

What an idiot is president.

He pooh-poohs the idea that there could ever be anything adversarial about the relationship between Americans and their government:

You hear some of these quotes: “I need a gun to protect myself from the government.” “We can’t do background checks because the government is going to come take my guns away.”

Well, the government is us. These officials are elected by you. (Applause.) They are elected by you. I am elected by you. I am constrained, as they are constrained, by a system that our Founders put in place. It’s a government of and by and for the people.

One of the constraints on the federal government is the doctrine of enmuerated powers, which says every act of Congress must be justified by a specific constitutional grant of authority. Where is the clause that empowers Congress to say how many rounds you can put in a magazine or whether your rifle can have a barrel shroud? Furthermore, as Obama surely has heard by now, there is this thing called the Second Amendment, and it is hardly frivolous to argue than an arbitrary and capricious piece of legislation like the “assault weapon” ban Obama supports would violate the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Yet to Obama’s mind, anyone who makes such an argument is one of those “people who take absolute positions” and therefore can be safely ignored. After all, the government is us.

It’s not a tradition, it’s a Constitutionally protected right. There the left goes again, changing the definitions of words and the meaning behind the ‘system’ the founders created. Maybe Boehner should give him the framework he’s asking for, a plan to control the debt and deficit and all the other skittles he’s tossing out to his crowd. Questions of the day, can this president distance himself any further from the situation we’re in as if he didn’t have any hand in creating it? Does he still think he got points if the free throws weren’t made since they are free?

stvnscott on April 4, 2013 at 9:20 PM

Yes. Yes I do. When the mentally ill were turned out of those institutions, most of them ended up on the streets. Is that better for them? The ranks of the homeless contain a lot of mentally ill people.

Society would be safer, and the people with problems would be safer, if we came up with a humane way to care for them. Right now, even when unstable people threaten their loved ones (as was the case in Newtown), there’s almost nothing that can be done UNTIL THEY COMMIT A VIOLENT ACT.

Society has basically decided that crazy people have a green light to kill people.

I fully agree – BUT – be careful what we ask for.
Another Colorado Dem has proposed a new gun control bill that basically gives the government the ability to confiscate all of your guns for a year if they receive a phone call from ANY doctor, psychiatrist, or counselor of any kind indicating you have sought mental health help and therefore might be a danger to yourself or anyone else. If this goes through, no gun owner should EVER talk to any doctor or counselor of any kind ever again about any mental health issues – or you will be disarmed by the government. A court hearing and much more legal work is required to take away a person’s driver’s license than would be required under this bill to disarm someone.
