Video: Leno’s shot at the AP, Democrats, and immigration reform

posted at 10:41 am on April 3, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Obligatory, really, after the exceedingly silly public statement from the wire service yesterday. Newsbusters has the grab from last night’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno, in which Leno manages shots at the Associated Press, Democrats, and the rush for an immigration-reform bill in less than 30 seconds, including the applause:

“And in a groundbreaking move, the Associated Press, the largest news gathering outlet in the world, will no longer use the term ‘illegal immigrant.’ That is out. No longer ‘illegal immigrant.’ They will now use the phrase ‘undocumented Democrat.’ That is the newest – ‘undocumented Democrat.’”

Frankly, I think the term “illegal immigrant” works perfectly fine as a descriptor, which puts me in the same reactionary league as Janet Napolitano, as Allahpundit pointed out yesterday. In fact, not only do we have the same position on it, we have the same reasoning as well:

At a breakfast with reporters last week, she brushed aside concerns that the term is racist. “I don’t really get caught up in the vocabulary wars. They are immigrants who are here illegally. It’s an illegal immigrant,” she said. “They are immigrants who are here without documents. That’s an undocumented immigrant,” she added.

I think either term works, and it’s silly to keep looking for terms that don’t concisely describe a newsworthy and/or legal status just to prove an enlightenment that’s more of an affectation of concern than anything else. In this case, the statement itself proved just how inane the AP’s posture was. In the same blog post, the AP decided that their change, from a perfectly serviceable and non-discriminatory term that can literally be applied to anyone who enters the country illegally without regard to ethnicity or belief system, was both solidly founded — and tied to the whims of the moment:

Is this the best way to describe someone in a country without permission? We believe that it is for now. We also believe more evolution is likely down the road.

In other words: our new policy is superior, but we’ll change it in a heartbeat if enough people decide it’s not acceptable, either. Way to take a stand, AP! Why not wait until you’re certain that the new policy is solid before introducing it, especially in such a pretentious manner? Better yet, why not state that the use of “illegal immigrant” has no discriminatory issues at all, rather than cave to whatever current of political correctness happens to prevail at any point in time?

The Boss Emeritus blasts the AP in her column today, scoffing, “No wonder the Mainstream Media is dying”:

As I told Daily Caller reporter Matthew Boyle at the time, the idea that “undocumented workers” and “undocumented immigrants” are more objective labels than “illegal immigrants” is complete and utter nonsense. The euphemisms that mainstream “journalists” favor are far more politically loaded than the ones they’re trying to replace.

It’s a farce to call someone an “undocumented immigrant” whose pockets are overflowing with fake, fraudulent documents — and that is usually the case with many of the suspected illegal immigrants featured in AP stories. (Moreover, it is inaccurate to call someone whose employment history, criminal record and welfare status are unknown an undocumented “worker.”)

At the time, the AP agreed. AP’s deputy standards editor David Minthorn told Boyle three short years ago: “The AP Stylebook created its entry on ‘illegal immigrant’ in 2004, in response to renewed debate over border security and the enforcement of immigration laws after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Together, the terms describe a person who resides in a country unlawfully by residency or citizenship requirements. Illegal immigrant … is accurate and neutral for news stories.”

So what changed? “Journalist” Kathleen Carroll, AP’s executive editor, attributes the move to the “evolving” English language. I attribute it to the “evolving” transformation of once-neutral news organizations into brazenly transparent satellite lobbying outfits for the left. It’s not media bias that’s the problem, of course. It’s the sanctimonious pretense of objectivity to which these alleged practitioners of journalism cling.

Maybe “undocumented Democrats” is a term that could apply to the media, too.

That’s a good one. BUT, Leno is a HUGE obama supporter and he gleefully did his part to put obama in office TWICE – so, the joke has less of a bite to it than if a thinking person had told it.

I think two things are being conflated.

First there are illegal aliens. This is a legal status. Compare with resident aliens. Bottom line- an illegal alien is a non-citizen who does not have permission to be in this nation.

But oftentimes people talk about “illegals” in a perjorative way. For example, “I drove by the Home Depot at the parking lot was filled with illegals looking for work.” This useage is what the left has decided de-humanizes the criminals who are among us.

Illegal Alien.

An alien is a person who comes from a foreign country. The term illegal alien is broader and more accurate because it includes undocumented aliens and nonimmigrant visa overstayers. An undocumented alien is an individual who has entered the U.S. illegally, without entry documentation.

Why do you think NBC wants to replace him with Jimmy Fallon? It’s not just because Fallon is younger and can draw more people over to social networks, it’s because, unlike Leno – who can occasionally possess an even-handedness within his jokes – Fallon continues the Socialist groupthink that dictates all operations at NBC.

Leno knows he’s on borrowed-time at the network now, so he really has nothing to lose.

Myron Falwell on April 3, 2013 at 10:59 AM

The reason for the push is that “undocumented” sounds like a paperwork error. Like the person is hear legally, there is just some bureaucratic snafu.

The definition of an immigrant is someone who moves to a new country to take up permanent residence. IMO, someone who invades this country by sneaking across the border in violaton of the law is not an “immigrant” in any sense of the word. Certainly, people who are here illegally cannot be presumed to be here for the purpose of taking up permanent residence. Illegal alien, or criminal, would be more accurate.

Hey, not my fault that the right has allowed the left to define the terms. I knew that January’s tax battles were a lost cause when Boehner went from talking about protecting the successful to talking about a tax on the rich.

Likewise, we don’t talk about amnesty we talk about a path to citizenship which could be as long as 15 years but more likely to be about 15 seconds after the law is enacted.

But what really ticks me off is the concept that these illegals are “undocumented” when clearly they have documents. Part of any enforcement should be cleaning up bogus SSNs and greater verification of eligibility to work in this country.

The sad part is that it is not a joke. The only reason Democrats want this is because there will be 30+ million new Democrats.

And after 50 years of being screwed by the immigration policy that Ted Kennedy and the Democrats put into effect in 1965, and wondering about their “demographics problem,” the Republicans are still so clueless that they will not block “immigration reform” from happening.

It’s really not possible to be an “illegal immigrant”, is it ? That’s kind of the first trick played on the nation via hijacking the language. The proper term is “illegal alien”, because there are such things as “legal” aliens.

Kind of like having to defend “traditional marriage” instead of simply “marriage”. Marriage = union typically with kids (produced by that union).

How about “international burglar” ?

dentarthurdent on April 3, 2013 at 12:33 PM

Frankly, I think the term “illegal immigrant” works perfectly fine as a descriptor

Technically, the accurate term is “illegal alien”. An immigrant is someone who has migrated here under the assumption for permanent residence and citizenship. An alien is a foreigner who has not yet acquired citizenship. With immigrant, you have a presumption of desired citizenship (and assimilation), which is a big leap considering all the talk of guest worker visas.

Personally, I’d be fine with a guest worker visa with a lifetime max (5 years?), an iron-clad restriction that they cannot send money out of the country (forcing them to return to their country of origin periodically), and that they abide by all laws of employment (minimum wage and tax payment/withholding). Under a guest visa, they would have NO access to government aid or voting rights. Citizenship would be through standard channels, the same as others. Once they hit their lifetime max, they would not be allowed into the country and would be immediately deported if caught overstaying. Yes, they can apply for citizenship while on work visa. Anyone caught as an illegal alien without work visa would be immediately deported, and blacklisted for citizenship or guest work visa.

How’s that as an immigration approach?

dominigan on April 3, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Oh, and any illegal immigrant caught using fraudulent documents (identity theft), would also be blacklisted and deported (or imprisoned).

“Criminal Invader” works best since most have no intention to fully “immigrate”. They’d go home in a heartbeat if it were financially feasible for them…they have, obviously, no loyalty to the nation that provides for their benefit.

Next up: unrealized Americans

Which covers just about everyone who can get here. I dunno, with an Open Border mentality, giving incentives to millions upon millions might just cause the USA to be too crowded and tip over.

hawkeye54 on April 3, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Maybe “undocumented Democrats” is a term that could apply to the media, too.

Jay Leno may have inadvertently given us the perfect term to describe the media.

There Goes The Neighborhood on April 3, 2013 at 1:40 PM

…it’s silly to keep looking for terms that don’t concisely describe a newsworthy and/or legal status just to prove an enlightenment that’s more of an affectation of concern than anything else.

You give these cretins too much credit ,Ed. AP’s problem with the term “illegal immigrant” is that it is too accurate. It’s a constant reminder that the illegal immigrant’s first act on US soil was a crime.

Refusal to use the perfectly descriptive term is an attempt to deny the reality of the situation. It is an egregious example of ongoing AP progressive propaganda, in which “news” is twisted and distorted (if not completely divorced from reality) in service of PC and progressive political agendas.

novaculus on April 3, 2013 at 1:42 PM

ABC has it right – the call them simply “illegals”.

Schadenfreude on April 3, 2013 at 1:49 PM

They are “your job snatchers”.

Schadenfreude on April 3, 2013 at 1:53 PM

It’s not media bias that’s the problem, of course. It’s the sanctimonious pretense of objectivity to which these alleged practitioners of journalism cling.

I prefer to think of them as ‘alleged inflictors of journalism,’ myself. This kind of journalism constitutes an actual offense.

James on April 3, 2013 at 2:08 PM

The sad part is that it is not a joke. The only reason Democrats want this is because there will be 30+ million new Democrats.

And after 50 years of being screwed by the immigration policy that Ted Kennedy and the Democrats put into effect in 1965, and wondering about their “demographics problem,” the Republicans are still so clueless that they will not block “immigration reform” from happening.

milcus on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Reminiscent of the three-fifths compromise, where the slave-owning states, after insisting for so long that slaves were mere property with no rights at all, suddenly wanted them counted as population for the purpose of inflating their representation in Congress. The non-slave-owning states properly resisted this attempt, and the compromise was to count three-fifths of the slave population as citizens for the purpose of representation only.

The analogous situation here is that the Democrats want the Republicans to cooperate with their marginalization. But there will be no 3/5 compromise, of course. The new voters will necessarily have every bit as much voting power as the people who were here already.

There Goes The Neighborhood on April 3, 2013 at 2:17 PM

“Future Legal Democrat” will eventually win out over “Current Illegal Democrat.”

No! They’re Democratic Operatives with ByLines!

Another Drew on April 3, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I think “undocumented democrat” is an instant classic.

woodNfish on April 3, 2013 at 4:29 PM

I prefer “vast desert crosserer”. Sounds heroic.

msupertas on April 3, 2013 at 11:07 AM

That one is already taken by the Jews…..

dentarthurdent on April 3, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Vast ARIZONA desert crosserers??

msupertas on April 3, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Nope, that’s taken by Jews too…or at least the 10 tribes of Israel that came to North America and founded the great societies of the Book of Mormon. (Seriously, Glenn Beck?)

Nutstuyu on April 3, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Several sites are reporting that it’s official – Jay Leno leaves The Tonight Show next year.

22044 on April 3, 2013 at 5:07 PM

What fevered mind could possibly believe that “illegal immigrant” is racist, where do they come up with that?

Bishop on April 3, 2013 at 10:47 AM

Racist!

davidk on April 3, 2013 at 5:08 PM

Seriously, do you really care what the far left AP news does. It is illegal immigrant or aliens and the AP can shove it. They are just an office of the socialist Obama regime with no credibilty the same as their boss

HAGGS99 on April 3, 2013 at 5:43 PM

For the first and only time in my life, I stand with Janet Napolitano on this one:

Permanent Resident Alien

An alien admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident. Permanent residents are also commonly referred to as immigrants; however, the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) broadly defines an immigrant as any alien in the United States, except one legally admitted under specific nonimmigrant categories (INA section 101(a)(15)). An illegal alien who entered the United States without inspection, for example, would be strictly defined as an immigrant under the INA but is not a permanent resident alien. Lawful permanent residents are legally accorded the privilege of residing permanently in the United States. They may be issued immigrant visas by the Department of State overseas or adjusted to permanent resident status by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the United States.

I think “undocumented democrat” is an instant classic.

Yeah, and the dems think nothing of that at all. I can just see The DNC selling t-shirts on their website emblazoned:

“Undocumented Democrat, and Proud of It!”

or“I’m Proud of My Undocumented Democrat Son/Daughter/Babysitter/Gardner”

hawkeye54 on April 3, 2013 at 7:25 PM

We’ve already got an undocumented president.

Oxymoron on April 3, 2013 at 7:36 PM

If Leno keeps this up, he’ll be having to look for work over at FoxNews.

ButterflyDragon on April 3, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Exactly. Fox hasn’t had a decent night time show since Arsenio. Fallon is an Obama sycophant and Jay’s biting jokes are going to draw more of an audience. The late night pie getting split 4 ways would be awesome and hit NBC in the wallet. I bet Jay would do it cheap too.

And again Rush is right…language matters. This needs a t shirt.

Theworldisnotenough on April 3, 2013 at 9:00 PM

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in a rather scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master — that’s all.”

It’s amazing how often I remember that bit from Through the Looking Glass when progressives start playing their euphemistic language games.
